Further info to follow.

  1. Turpin was VAR for Marciniak in Germany-Sweden game, is that the reason of kicking him out from WC?

    1. How unbelievable it was that a clear push from Boateng on the Swedidsh stiker , Marciniak refused to check with VAR and his VAR Turpin mysteriously didn't bring to Marciniak's notice !

    2. Also Brych in SRB-SWISS to ignore VAR. Didnt expect them to ignore VAR at all. Good referees with big ego..

      Delete
    3. However, it is reported that in both situations VAR intervened but referees didn't want to change idea.
So it should be exclusive Brych and Marciniak's fault.

    4. One ref I observed using the VAR brilliantly to the fullest was Bjorn Kuipers in the Russia vs Spain game , a perfect game for any ref and obviously Bjorn Kuipers a big candidate for the FINAL.

    5. Mazic also used VAR in no penalty call for SEN.

    6. Just out appointments - Kuipers, Mažić, Ricci and Pitana to officiate quarterfinals.

  2. Expected...however, I'm a little bit surprised with Turpin

  3. I assume that all reserves are going.

About the others? Gassama, Caceres, Grisha are mine prime candidates.

  4. Things have definitely changed if we compare what happened until 2014 WC. Now performance is the first criterion.
I'm really sorry for Irmatov, but his experience didn't save him from a deserved leaving.

    1. Well in terms of performance, Turpin did nothing wrong in my opinion

    2. Referees are leaving now not only for performances reasons.

    3. Turpin leaves because there are better EURO referee left and also France is still going on. Anyway he did an honest job in Russia.

  7. Croatian tv expert Mateo Beusan yesterday on TV said that he has a info that all reserve officials and Brych, Marciniak and Roldan are going home for sure. You just confirmed Marciniak and Brych, probably he was right about Roldan I guess.

  8. Agree chefren but in case of Turpin, nothing wrong IMO. Perhaps, France in 1/4 finals sends him to home. We have to see if Ricci and Cunha are out too. ;)

    1. Of course there are different reasons for this leaving of referees, not only performances, but also other assessment, I think Turpin was already planned for two group stage games before the tournament, nothing more than that.

  9. Really strange in the case of Turpin... Ah, politics...

    1. Not politics. France went to QF, he went out..

    2. Again, I must say that not all the referees are leaving for performances reasons, there are also other evaluations by committe: the experience, the presence of the national teams, and so on...

    3. Cunha and Ricci are not kicked out Jovan...

  10. It seems to be a new era in FIFA officiating. At least that's what I gathered from watching the press conference headed by Pierluigi Collina after the group stage. He said it takes a change in mindset from what used to be "referee as final word" to be willing to get the call right by using VAR. Those struggling to make that change apparently won't be welcome no matter how good they are. (It raises the question of whether Collina himself could have made that transition.)

    1. Collina was always a very, very practical referee. Practical (vs. egotistical) referees would accept VAR better.

  11. When do the referees for quarters get announced?

    1. Appointments are always released two days before the related game, so today, maybe this evening, we will have the first two names for Brazil - Belgium and Uruguay - France.

  12. And one more thing: VAR might be a great way to keep referees on after they've retired from the pitch. And no age limit for VAR.

  14. I have to say I think 36 sets of officials for this tournament was too many. Some of them have not even had one game and presumably have been sitting around in Russia at vast expense. 24 sets is enough, giving them each 2 games in the group stage then you keep the best 12 sets for the knockouts.

    ReplyDelete
  15. This also indicates that we will perhaps see one official get a consecutive R16 and QF appointment!

    ReplyDelete

    1. My prediction is that for a quarterfinal we will see again a referee who officiated in round of 16, otherwise the only other option seems to be Mateu Lahoz. Let's see.

    3. In 2010 World cup , Ravshan Irmatov got 5 games and he got the quarter finals as well as the Uruguay Netherlands semi finals. No hard and fast rules about alternative rounds of knock out. Remains to be seen whether Continental neutrality for appointments can be sustained.

      Delete
    4. Pitana and Kuipers receiving appointments in consecutive rounds is basically a result of some rather expected names being unavailable for the KO stage like Irmatov, Aguilar, Gassama, Brych and Marciniak... These referees were expected to get KO games but they have become unavailable and some other referee has to cover for them!

  16. You followed matches more than me, but I think that Aguilar and Irmatov didn't deserve to be excluded from WC at this stage. Not more than Abid Charef or Mohammed for example.
Anyway I fully agree with "Unknown 13:1&" 36 referees were really too much for 48 matches. most of them did a sort of holiday in Russia with very high expense. 24 would be right number.
What is not clear to me is the fact that referees of nations involved in QF will be sent home or can stay (Ricci ?)

    1. Irmatov was lucky anyway to get a 2nd appointment after a shocking 1st game and moreover he was poor in the 2nd game too... Anything other than sending him home would be terribly unfair... I really appreciate the Committee for going by performance and taking this important and fair step!

    2. Well, he decided about the destiny of Serbia. It was fair for him to have the same destiny. The day he was announced for that match, I wrote here that he is not the best solution. He has history with Serbian national team...

    3. @ It's about avoiding co-operation, sending one national team home is just consequence of that.

Out from serie B: Riccardo Pinzani, Antonello Balice, Daniele Martinelli, Francesco Paolo Saia.

      Promoted in serie B:
      Federico Dionisi (1988)
      Lorenzo Maggioni (1984)
      Luca Massimi (1988)
      Alessandro Prontera (1986)

  19. I have to say, I am getting annoyed by the statements, that Brych has eliminated Serbia from the tournament (sometimes formulated more drastical), which are made again and again not only by the Serbians, but also by neutral observers.
Yes, he has denied them a penalty, i.e. a ~78% chance for a goal. And yes, IF they had scored AND nothing had changed in the rest of the match, Serbia would have qualified for the next round.
But that was one situation in two games against Switzerland and Brazil, where Serbia had a lot of minutes to score the necessary goals. And in all other attacks it was certainly not Brych's fault, that they did not manage that. Do you blame the Serbian players the same way, who made a bad pass, so that a great chance was not created, or who missed a good opportunity to score, or who did not prevent their opponents to score?

Let's take the other big mistake of the group stage, the missed penalty for Sweden by Marciniak. So Marciniak has thrown Sweden out of the tournament, right? But, wait... they are in the QFs. How is that even possible with such a mistake by the referee?
I hope, you see, what I mean.
On a refereeing platform, we surely can discuss these mistakes, but in my opinion it is not the place for such populist statements.

    1. What is your proposal after this epic statement?

      Delete
    2. You missed the point.
It's not about mistake, it's about rejecting VAR intervetion.

      You don't need VAR?
Ok, good luck with that, now you are taking the resposibility.

      Delete
    3. PS
Maybe we are all wrong (Serbians and neutral observers, as you called us) and it was not big mistake.

Are then Collina and Busacca wrong?
They showed us whats FIFA's opinion about avoiding VAR protocole.

You don't need to defend Brych and Marciniak, it's all clear.
Great referees with big mistakes (in a terms of avoiding VAR)

      Delete
    4. The VAR shouldn't have intervened in the first place according to protocol. It's not a clear mistake. A complicated scene with use of elbow on the one side and holding by two other players.

      Delete
    5. It was clear mistake. Pulling from both players started first then elbow. We know you're from Germany trying to defend Brych but be honest.

      Delete
    6. Felix Brych is one of the best referees, but his presence on WC tournaments (two championships, only three matches and no playoff stage) must be very frustrating for him anyway. In my opinion he deserved more matches in Brazil 2014...

      Delete
    7. @Bozidar: My proposal is, that we discuss and point out referee mistakes and the consequences for the referee, but not focus on the consequences for the teams. No problem, if it is mentioned once, that it is an important mistake. But if we want to discuss the quality of refereeing, it is unnecessary to always repeat the consequence for the team. If Serbia had qualified for the next round, Brych's performance would be neither better nor worse.

@Dr Mr: Has it been confirmed, what exactly happened in the communication with the VAR? Anyway, that's not my point. We surely can discuss and mention, that VAR was not used well there.
I don't want to defend Brych regarding the VAR rejection and the decision, but I don't think it's correct to blame him (again and again) for the failure of the Serbian NT to proceed.

And of course, that counts for all referees, who make mistakes. But in this case, it's mentioned nearly every day for 2 weeks, that's why I wanted to make my statement.

    8. @Mikael W
I absolutely agree with statement about elimination.

      @Premysl Kosejk
Although I never liked his style of refereeing, Brych is top referee for sure.

About previous WC, Brych struggled a bit, if you remember?
-Uruguay-Costa Rica, it was reported here on the blog there was missed VC, 7.9
-Belgium-Russia, he missed one PK (confirmed on later RAP) and there was one more potential crucial mistake, if I remember well.

So, one top referee with, unfortunately, not so good World Cup performances...

      Delete
    9. Of course Philipp is right and I fully agree with him.
You can say that Brych has missed a quite clear penalty, but you can't say that he has eliminated Serbia, even in case of penalty assigned, then game could have had a different final result as well. We can't make any statement in this regard.
More generally, I don't like to read always the same things, we are here to discuss about performance, not about football teams. Brych has been assessed by committee for his performance, and very likely this is the consequence. So in case he had to pay for that missed penalty, he has already paid. You just have to accept that: it was Brych, it could have been every of the other 35 referees.

      Delete
    10. Brych did what he was thinking that is the best for him in that situation. I want to believe that his decision was without bad attentions, but it was assessed as wrong and he paid the price for it. It wouldn't be fair to say that he deserved one more game, and to deny that game to the referees who didn't have that kind of error. I hope that Brych will learn from this experience and use VAR properly next time. He is the only UEFA big name with only one game, so we can say that he failed this time.

      Delete
    11. Of course, all of you are looking on this issue only from one side - from the refereeing side (ok, the blog is all about it and I understand). You say: referee made a (significant, crucial) mistake, so he is punished for that. But, from that punishment what's the benefit for club or national team? None! And football is not about refereeing, it is about players, teams, goals!
Mikael W said that Brych didn't DIRECTLY eliminate Serbia. Well, it was 1-1, 70th minute of the match, Serbia already had 3 points (Switzerland 1) and in case of winning the match - Serbia would be already in 1/8 finals. We will never know what would happened later (maybe Serbia would miss penalty, maybe Swiss would score 2 goals and win 3-2, maybe Serbia would score 2 more goals from counter attack and win 4-1), but it was crucial mistake - it became more crucial after we lost the match. At the end of the day - MOST PROBABLY it cost Serbia passing the group.
In WC 2010 referee Larionda from Uruguay missed to whistle the PK for Serbia against Australia in 89' (arm above the head after cross, clear PK). Serbia needed one goal to equalize and pass the group. It was 3rd, last match in the group and he DIRECTLY eliminate Sebia by this mistake (the same ref didn't see the goal for England in 1/8 finals against Germany for 2-2 - it was 1 meter inside; later Germany scored 2 more goals and crashed England, but if it was 2-2, maybe England would progress and reach semifinal, as Germany later did). Those mistakes are so significant at WC (maybe they are not in national championships, because you have lot of rounds to play - here one mistake and you are home).
So what Serbia (or England) if the refs got punished? Nothing! Boys are now at the sea, and maybe, just maybe they would be still in Russia, preparing for 1/4 finals. But, VAR is there for this things never to happen and we are mad and sad only because Brych didn't want to go for OFR.

      Delete
    12. There are 3 sides:

      1. Referee side. Perhaps his decision (knocks to heads) was justifiable. Ignoring VAR (if he did that) is not.
      2. Team side. A PK can significantly change tone of game and perhaps Serbia's ultimate outcome.
      3. Most importantly: What does the public see? They ALL see only one thing: Two players hauling down an opponent. How is this solved? Back to number 1. OFR. Once THAT happens, Brych can choose any one of a number of outcomes and easily sell it.

      Delete
    13. As we saw on PLC press conference, Brych was in the category of 0.7% referees who failed to use VAR (or ignore to do that), and that was a crucial mistake with direct income on the game. This is the only objective reason that we should watch. As that, all 0.7% of referees should go home, and I am sure that all are included on this list.

    Some points:
-Both crucial situations (Pavon & Boateng) were consulted with VAR and he did not ignore any suggestions
-After reviewing replays, after the game Boateng situation was closer to faul, than not-faul, although it is debatable ('For Webb and Clattenburg it was to little for PK')
-When Marciniak was approaching Pavon, he got Geiger's confirmation, as Geiger reviewed whole situation within 6 seconds
-He is proud about his team and performance; he underlines that he went for experience gathering and they were one of the youngest teams.
