UEFA assessed as crucial mistakes two handballs in Italy - Sweden, officiated by Mateu Lahoz, both situations were penalties to be whistled to Sweden (12', 28'). The Spanish ended his play off for WC with a 7.4....
On another note, the penalty by Karasev for handball in NED - SWE (player kicking the ball on his own arm) was marked as crucial mistake as well (unintentional).

    1. Wow… should we expect consequences? I think rather not as almost a year has passed and he got UCL matches after that. Maybe that was the reason he didn't handle any KO stage WC match.

      Delete
    2. Maybe that was the reason he started KO stage of European competitions with 2 UEL matches following a UCL match where he again had a crucial mistake... So the wrong decisions in Italy v Sweden is now confirmed and honestly it was a very bad performance as most of us in the blog felt here!

      Delete
    3. The fact the Mateu was assessed with 2 missed handball penalties doesn't necessarily means that he got 7.4 by the observer. Maybe the observer recognized only 1 handball. We can't be sure.

But the truth is that his performance was surely on this area.

      Delete
    4. So, crucial mistake for the observer in that case, since these are the official assessments by UEFA and a observer should apply them.

      Delete
    5. Chefren, are you seeing these mistakes in RAP?

      Delete
    6. I ask because I think RAP's objective is being educational, and it is (obviously) made after performances. Maybe the observer didn't assess all situations as punishable handballs and backed the play-on decision for some of them. However, UEFA would have preferred a penalty kick decision and that is why they are included.

TBH, I highly doubt that any referee with 3 crucial mistakes in such a significant match would have attended the WC, irrespective of his nationality (if they left England without representatives, why would they really mind doing the same with Spain with good reasons to do so?). It is either that or that they trusted Mateu Lahoz so much more than the other preselected referees that they preferred not to take that performance into account (not much, at least).

    7. But Sweden's handball is never a (crucial) mistake, this is absolutely a handball. That arm should never be in that position.

      Delete
    8. It wasn’t deliberate... If UEFA says it’s a mistake then it’s a mistake.

  2. So why mate was selected for WC while Hategan not?

    ReplyDelete

    1. This is an excellent question actually... Hategan had one crucial mistake that directly knocked Northern Ireland out... Mateu had crucial mistakes but those were against both teams and Sweden qualified in the end... Maybe that's a reason but after 3 crucial mistakes in a playoff match a referee shouldn't be selected for a playoff match IMO!

      Delete
    2. His country probably helped him...
He only got two rather low-profile matches in GS, so his playoff performance might have been considered in that. Also he missed another handball there, which was corrected by VAR.

    3. We talked only about Hategan and his crucial mistake, nw rewatching these incidents in Mateu game, I think this was unfair.
However, the Spanish was surely helped by the fact that all major mistakes went against Sweden but the team qualified. Hategan committed only one crucial mistake but it was game decider. I know that this is not fair and such mistakes should always considered as the same, regardless of the outcome, but...
Another thing I want to say: maybe it can be "worse" to whistle a totally wrong penalty, than to play on, following clear penalties? What do you think? Can be consider sucu crucial mistakes at the same levl?
But yes, I can't deny that background helped Mateu, in case he would have been from another country and with less experience, he would have got even a worse treatment by committee...

      Delete
    4. The problem is Hategan was that the ball didn't hit the arm at all and it directly proved to be the match influencing decision across both legs combined!

      Delete
  3. The deliberate hit by Chiellini (77', maybe you remember) on the opponent while attacking was assessed as violent conduct as well.
    So three crucial mistakes there...

  5. OT #2

It seems that Gil Manzano has had trouble in a friendly (Betis - Sporting Braga), which has ended with three Braga players sent off and mass confrontations according to MARCA.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Gil Manzano issued a 2nd YC to Bruno Viana, but he didn't realize it was the second one and forgot to send him off. VAR was Del Cerro Grande and intervened, then Gil Manzano finally issued the RC and it led to a mass confrontations in the benches.

The question is, can VAR warn the referee about a RC he missed after issuing a 2nd YC? Which case it is, a mistaken identity?

      Delete
    2. I guess it should be included. Thing is: does VAR write down which YC are issued? Otherwise, situations like these will very likely be missed if the referee writes down the wrong number after the first YC.

Another thing I have doubts on is: what if the referee writes the right number but VAR doesn't and then suggests a RC for a non-guilty player? Does he check the first caution again? Is that allowed in VAR protocol?

Rosenborg - Valur 3-1. 3 penalties in the match.

    Some very debatable...

    1. Some debatable? Theyr all debate, out of the 3 the last one is a penalty for use of the elbow but other 2 very harsh , hope that ref isn't involved in our games this season

      Delete
    2. The second one is clearly wrong, but I think, also the other two should not have been whistled. Also the procedure at the last penalty is not correct.

      Delete
    3. In my opinion, all three penalties are wrong decisions.
Never seen somthing like that. With all the respect for Stefan Apostolov. In occasion of last penalty you see that he changes idea and he whistles after a certain hesitation.

      Delete
    4. I am sorry for the ref but this performance is unacceptable. He isn't convincing at all when he finally decides to whistle on penalties 2 and 3.

      Delete
    5. The 3rd one is the only one I find "debatable" if referee can be supported or not. The 1st and 2nd one, never a penalty, so IMO at least 2 crucial mistakes.

      Delete
    6. Rewatched the 3rd one.

Now I find all 3 penalties wrong :/

      Delete
    7. 3 crucial mistakes, second penalty is totally disaster, the ball hitted in the head but he whistled for handball?
      6.9??

      Delete
    8. Unbelievable... Even TV commentators were laughing out load!

      Delete
    9. Who is the referee in question??

      Delete
    10. I wrote that in a comment, Soham, read everything :)

      Delete
    11. Best part of the first one is that literally no one is claiming for it! Even for the second one, the player with the ball is carrying on.

      Delete
    12. The referee's career is kind of over I think

      Delete
    13. Very harsh, Soham. But for sure something more is needed, at least mentally, at this level.

      Delete
    14. What nobody has mentioned so far. Is that the 3rd whistled PK(2nd for Rosenborg) deep into stoppage time. Ended up being the goal that eliminated Valur. Up until that point, Valur ws advancing on "away goals". I'm totally gutted for the Icelandic team.

      Delete
    15. Sorry and with all possible respect: Those PKs are in my view just ridicolous. All three. What should the defender do before PK1... cut away his elbow?
The 2nd is so obvious we do not need to discuss and the 3rd... friends, when that is a PK we will see minimum 10 PKs in every game. I would like to see some bet quotes for that game.

  7. OT:
German Ex-Bundesliga Thorsten Kinhöfer proposed a change in the handball rule. If there are handballs in the penalty box he proposed a direct freekick at the edge of the penalty area. Only if there are handballs regarding a shot at goal (currently cautioned with a YC) there should be a penalty in his opinion.

What do you think of these ideas?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Agree with Alberto, bad Kinhofer, bad change :D

    2. Say no to unnecessary complications... It's already too complicated! :/

  8. Do you remember the YC by Cakir in the early minutes of SWE - ITA WC play off? Well it was a mistaken identity, and not for protests, as we guessed. Cakir had missed the author of the foul.
Referee must be focused even before the kick off, to prevent such situations.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Cakir giving a YC for dissent instead of making his trademark "calm down" gesture in the first minutes of a game is unimaginable :D

Btw is this the reason why Cakir started his World Cup with a rather low profile match on paper - Morocco v Iran??

      Delete
    2. I don't think so. Everything about play off was in my opinion "cancelled".
Sorry if I mention again Mateu Lahoz, but you all remember what happened to Martin Hansson after France - Ireland mistake... well, the Spanish was really, really lucky that both his performance was not discussed so much because Italy were in any case in a big chaos and the fact that he attended WC officiating two group stage games.... he was really lucky.
I didn't write that before knowing the official assessments by UEFA, but now I think we are allowed to think in this way.

      Delete
    3. And yet in one of FIFA's most unjust decisions. They selected Hansson who didn't at all deserve it, to go to South Africa. While Ireland was at home. Totally messed up by FIFA. Just pouring more salt and vinegar into Ireland's still open wound.

      Delete
    4. Hansson wasn't appointed for the WC

      Delete
    5. Oh, he wasn't? Are you sure? Because I don't think you are.

      www.fifa.com/worldcup/matches/round=249717/match=300061500/index.html#photos#nosticky

Yet again you are wrong. With all the info available at your fingertips you blatantly lie. So much for you credibility and your "expertise" analysis of refereeing.

      Delete
    6. oh look, Hansson was assigned to yet another match in South Africa 2010.

      www.fifa.com/worldcup/matches/round=249722/match=300111112/index.html#lineups#nosticky

"Hansson wasn't appointed for the WC" really? :D

      Delete
    7. We all know he was there as a 4th official... What was meant is that Hands-on didn't have any matches as the central referee!

      Delete
    8. And what I'm saying is that he should not have been in South Africa at all. Ireland wasn't there, neither should have Hansson.

Interesting situation in match between Crvena Zvezda - Spartaks
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hcKsHGzYMDc
Your opinion? Correct YC for attacker or it should be penalty?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. My preferred solution would be penalty and YC (or RC) for the GK.
Indirect FK for the GK (+YC/RC for the GK) could be supported as well, if you consider that as dangerous play. But the YC for the attacker seems too harsh.

      Delete
    2. The striker did absolutely nothing wrong at all. His raised foot was far from making contact with or endangering the GK. Now based on the GK's reaction. I'm whistling a penalty, no doubt about it. And me, being the by Laws of the Game type of referee. I'm sending him of for violent conduct. IMO any form of unnecessary or unneeded contact with an opponents head/face is grounds for a straight Red Card.

  10. Excellent advantage from Lardot prior to Finland's 2nd goal.
