  1. Good Luck to the Greek team at Camp Nou

  2. Why do the matches in group B start that early? I rather know such kick-off times from countries with artic climate on MD 5/6 in December - but Barcelona/Milan in September? 🤔

    1. Because timing of the games is changed from this season. On every match day 2 games will start at 18:55 and remaining 6 at 21. Reason is that more games can be watched by TV viewers.

  3. Really surprising appointments. Sidiropoulos in Camp Nou after a match in Saudi Arabia (Efthimiadis returned in Sidirpoulos' team as 4th), Collum in Monaco after a disastrous match in POR-ITA in fornt of Batta, Makkelie in Belgium (which don't see under Collina). Good luck to all of them!!

  4. It seems we still have the same pattern despite the fact PLC left.
Cakir will be in charge at Liverpool- PSG. I don't think it's necessary to have such an experience referee for a game like this, in 1st round of CL groups. Ok, in knock-out stage things would be different, an experience referees should be in charge. But now, at the start of the season I can't see the utility.
I remember you that last season Cakir whistled Bayern- PSG in group stage, in a moment when both teams were qualified (and their order in the group was 99% known).

Why is necessary to have important names like Cakir, Kuipers, Mazic etc in this kind of games ? These games should be the perfect opportunity for referees like Marciniak, Hategan, Collum, Makkelie, Kralovec, Sidiropoulos etc. to gain experience. Otherwise we will still have the same problem in the next years: a very limited number of referees who are capable to whistle important games.

  5. Cakir appointed for big games in group stage is something we see every year, committee wants that. Personally, I think that it would be good to see some different names, but at the same time we are talking about one of the best FIFA referees ever (if you ask me). I also think that committee has a big feeling of gratitude towards him and these appointments are the result of that. The same for Kuipers.

Sidiropoulos and Collum are still tested also on the road to Euro 2020, the Scottish should offer a better performance than Portugal - Italy, while the Greek deserved this game after a good EL play off.
Turpin is a strong candidate for EL final this season, if you ask me.

    4. @Chefren

No doubt that Cakir was one of best referees in the world in last 6-7 years. About "one of the best FIFA referees" ever it's hard to say because we didn't have the chance to watch too many referees in the past. For example, how many matches of Palotai (died this year), Rainea or Puhl (and many others) did you ever watch ?
I had a very good opinion about Cakir until this year but I changed it (mainly) after Juventus- Real (game seen from the stadium). In this period Cakir whistle what he wants and when he wants. Example: NO PENALTY in last second of Juventus- Real (clear foul on Cuadrado), PENALTY for Salzburg in Salzburg- Crvena Zvezda. After Juventus- Real, Real- Bayern, Salzburg- Crvena Zvezda and even Argentina- Nigeria I can say he doesn't whistle everything he see but he whistle only what he wants to whistle. As a referee you should whistle what you see, not to filter your decision depending on your own interest. I think it's about a self-preservation approach of Cakir, who doesn't want too many complications in his games. Anyway, after 4 final tournaments (EURO and WC) you should have the decency to say enough. There are also many other referees in this world who wait to whistle important games and tournaments (and they didn't have a Senez Erzik in their careers...)

    5. The great ones from Europe i have in good memory are from late 80's en early 90's,
      John Blankenstein (Ned)
      Sandor Puhl (Hun)
      Joel Quiniou (Fra)
      Hellmut Krug (Ger)
      Leslie Mottram (Sco)
      Manuel Diaz Vega (Spa)
      Pierluigi Pairetto (Ita)
      Fabio Baldas (Ita)
      Bo Karlsson (Swe)
      Vasilios Nikakis (Gre)
      Ryszard Wojcik (Pol)
      Vadim Zhuk (Belaruss)
      Nikolay Levnikov (Rus)
      Rune Pedersen (Noo)
      Kim Milton Nielsen (Den)
      Peter Mikkelsen (Den)
      Ahmet Cakar (Tur)
I think it's difficult to compare.... but Peter Mikkkelsen was for sure one off time's absolutely topref's he was onle 32 when he got the important WCQ England-Neterlands in early 1993 at Wembkley.....he was only 28 when he was officiating at Euro1988. He Quit way to Early! Sandor Puhl also a realy great one, i personally liked his style......he was the man in charge is final 1994 worldcup Brazil-Italy, and also quarterfinal Italy-Spain, those 2 are the best off there time.

    6. How about Jol, who did the 99/00 final of CL?

      Delete
    7. Jol was a good ref to, but not in early 90's like Puhl and Mikkelsen, Jol was in the next generation like Collina, Merk ,Frisk, Garcia-Aranda, Poll, Dallas and Urs Meier

      Delete
    8. Hi all, that's my topic since in the 80th and 90th I was starting refereeing so I loved very much officials of that age.
During 80th, personally I think that best in class was Alexis Ponnet form Belgium, followed by Michel Vautrot (FR), Yoann IGNA (ROM), Peteer KAIZER (NED) Dieter Pauli and Wolker Roth (GER), Luigi AGNOLIN (ITA) Jeol Qioniou (FR), Bruno Galler (SWI), Erik Fredriksson (SWE), Helmut Kohl (AUT) and M. Van Langhenove (BEL). Rainera and Palotai stopped in 1982 so I cannot remembered them even if they have a very important palmares. Missing Spanish, Pourtugesis and English.
In 90th we had a very good generation too: Peter MIKKELSEN (DNK), Sandor PUHL (HUN), Kurt ROETHILINSBERGER (SWI), Aaron SCHIMDHUBER (GER), manuel DIAZ VEGA (SPA), Kim Milton NIELSEN (DNK), John BLANKSTEIN (NED). End of 90th new starts went into the pitch: Collina, Braschi, Merk, Meier and especially Frisk.
Jol officiated Cl final in june 2001

  6. IMO, that's a good set of appointments.

Collum is being tested on an interesting match. In case of a good performance, he could get something bigger this year. Manzano starts his Elite career with a big match and correctly so.

However, Sidiropoulos appointment doesn't feel like a test. Yes Barcelona is there but this match could go to a first group referee. So, in my eyes nothing has changed since last year when he had Chelsea - Qarabaq.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Not sure that it is appropriate to compare Qarabaq and PSV. At least because of history, if not because of quality. Although i think that in later there is also big difference.

      Delete
    2. We can, since PSV has beaten BATE, and they have beaten Qarabach.
However I should say that PSV has a good team this season, against a Barca that did not too well last years. I think an ELITE referee is not a bad choice.

      Delete
    3. I didn't compare the 2 teams but just the match. In both cases we have a clear favorite.

      Delete
    4. Probably, the most important test Sidiropoulos has had since he entered the elite category. He must avoid a crucial mistake and let the match flow as much as he can without showing unnecessary cards.

    1. For sure penalty could have been whistled. Some referees tend to play on when attacker is able to kick the ball and then the contact happens later... in case penalty without card.

  10. I expected first group referees in Belgrade and Brugge. However, I think this is not a good policy. I hoped for referees like Vincic,
Gozobuyuk, Frankowski, Mazeika, Bebek, Kovacs. New names should get chances, next to the likes of Jug, De Sousa, Buquet, Kulbakov, etc.
They would all make decent ELITE refs, of course.

  11. In serie A game Juventus - Sassuolo, VAR was used for a straight RC to be issued, following a spit by a player from Juventus against the opponent. Referee was informed without rewatching the incident.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AUM_Q7pZP0U
However, this incident could have been easily prevented by referee, because the same player a few seconds before had hit the opponent and it was in my opinion a clear violent conduct, referee issued only YC and he was unable to assess properly the incident.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Of course, as a Juve fan, I watched the game. I agree with you, the management of situation was poor. Douglas Costa was nervous because of a (potential) foul not awarded by the referee. After that he reacted in an unprofessional manner and the referee do nothing in order to calm down him. Red card totally deserved. About the referee: I can't say that I like his performance

      Delete
    2. These are the two actions made by player before spitting to opponent:
      https://streamable.com/52cs8
      https://streamable.com/9k57d
      YC was issued after that.
For sure an efficient management by referee could have avoided the last act of spitting. If he didn't want to send the player off, at least he could have controlled and calmed him down.

      Delete
    3. How the hell he interpreted that headbutt as a YC offence... In theory, it was possible in the past (strike in a reckless manner), but under new LOTG stating that every strike in the head while not fighting for the ball should be a RC, that decision is not acceptable both from Chiffi and VAR.

      Delete
  12. Really bad management now by de Burgos Bengoetxea and Aguilar Rodríguez (AR1). The AR raised the flag and didn't wait for the situation to end, but de Burgos ignored the call and let the situation finish. The raised flag caused defenders to stop playing and the attacker scored without opposition. Goal was correctly disallowed after 2 minutes of VAR check.

What do you think? Should de Burgos have stopped play after his AR signalled the offense or the way he acted was OK?

CAF has suspended some more referees for match-fixing. Including former AFCON referees Nampiandraza (MAD) and Dembélé (CIV), both for taking bribes of less than 3 000 USD. Between them they officiated at four AFCON championships.

  21. So far poor card management by Turpin. Missed YC for Vertonghen. Not consistent calls

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. First booking too harsh IMO.

      Delete
    2. Not sure whether the first YC was for the foul itself or not, at first glance it looked like Turpin didn't want to issue a card, then maybe a kind of reaction by player?

      Delete
    3. One thing is sure : the card management is absolutely different from the WC

  22. What a complete and total lack of authority shown by Sidoropoulos in the 52nd minute. Misses a foul against Suarez. Then whistles correctly a foul committed by Demebele. However then Demebele in a completely disrespectful manner kicks the ball far away in disgust. And Sidoropoulos fails to punish such a clear and obvious case of dissent by action.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yep. Tried to solved it with a verbal warning but IMO YC was mandatory. A minute later the YC was issued to Umtiti for another disrespective gesture ("punch into the air")

      Delete
    2. The entire incident could have been prevented if he had simply correctly whistled the foul committed against Suarez. However it became a case of a missed incident leading to bigger and preventable actions and cards.

      Delete
  23. Sidiropoulos didn't show second YC to Umtiti?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yep. But Umtiti left the pitch himself before the camera caught Sidiropoulos issuing the RC.

      Delete
    2. Umtiti seemed to simply walk off the pitch. On the TV feed I saw here. I saw Sidoropoulos pull his yellow out of his pocket. But he never really "showed" it to Umtiti. And at no point did I ever see him pull out and show the Red Card.

      Delete
    3. It looked to me that Sidiropoulos didn't remember that player was already booked, but I can be wrong. Referee was not seen showing RC.

      Delete
    4. I saw the YC not only out of his pocket but also shown to Umtiti. Not the RC, because TV camera didn't focus on the referee anymore.

      Delete
    5. Video of the incident: https://streamja.com/0M5A

      Delete
    6. Video doesn't clear up when Sidoropoulos supposedly showed the 2nd yellow followed by the Red Card to Umtiti. If Umtiti was already off the field when Sidoropoulos finally showed the yellow or the red. What a complete lack of respect shown by Umtiti towards Sidoropoulos.

      Delete
    7. Why is it lack of respect? He walked off the field without saying anything because he already knew he would get a red.

      Delete
    8. Maybe it's just me Victor. But I'm not a fan of showing cards to backs of players. But you are correct. Umtiti indeed left the pitch without further incident.

    1. do you think sidiropoulos can get more important matches than last year? He got all the crucial decisions right today

      Delete
    2. I think so. Let's wait for the next appointment.

      Delete
    3. I'm not convinced about Sidiropoulos' performance. It was okay, but not more than that! Indeed, no crucial faults, but he missed some fauls of both teams. Due to his performance the animosity was heating up for a few minutes (about 52'). I think Sidiroopoulos fails to see he is able to handle a more hot CL-game. My opinion: he didn't candidate himself for more important matches today.

      Delete
    4. I'm with Erik. Tasos lacks that "extra" that's needed to be trusted with bigger and better things. As Erik said, he himself caused a calm match to become hot, feisty, and combative. At times he seemed overwhelmed, erratic and lost.

      Delete
    5. Sidiropoulos is not in a good form. His last SL season was average at best and his european one was worst.

This year he started, domestically, with a suspension for a crucial mistake on MD1. I think that he has reached his peak and his future is in danger.

      Delete
  28. Early minutes and I see a very focused Marciniak in Belgrade: at first I think that a foul was called in cooperation with FO, then a few later good advantage following a dangerous play in the midfield.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Much like we saw and despised in Russia. Cakir using the continuous "warnings" against the greco roman wrestling that happens before each and every set play in the penalty area. Continuous warnings that will bring absolutely zero consequences.

  35. Missed offside by AR2 before PSG’s goal at 41st min.

Well, another player actively involved in the attack was way offside and the defender might be distracted. The scorer was onside. By law, you can call offside.

    3. Not at all for. There's a camera shot in which you can see a soft ankle contact.

The thing is, from GilMan's point of view, it's almost in 90°, very very very difficult to spot it, so if there wasn't AR1 intervention (who had the best view), I just wonder why he whistled that PK

    4. So, I hope somebody can bring us the full sequence, including the replay...

    5. There was a contact yes. But in my opinion, he didn't fall because of this contact. He went down, because he felt the contact.

But yes, at least there shouldn`t be a penalty.

  47. About the penalty awarded by Jesús Gil Manzano. The first impression was that there was no contact. But from one angle (3 or 4) it became clear that there was a blow to the leg. But it's unclear how the referee could see it.

  48. Little contact by Naldo, but a player with 1.90m/ nearly 100kg standing without problems on his left foot and AFTERWARDS decides to fall... this PK was absolutely ridicolous. The first PK after handball Naldo instead was a soft, but correct call in my view.

  49. Marciniak expected level performance. Very good assistant referees.
About the incidents in Gil Manzano's game: taking a quick look, I think first penalty is OK, second penalty is supportable but better decision there was to play on. Very, very soft contact.

  50. Watching the Porto highlights - am I seeing things or did Naldo for the second PK make the VAR sign to the referee? :D

He's obviously used to playing with VAR in the Bundesliga. There has to come a point where UEFA follows the big leagues in using VAR...

Vêtu good game for Cakir but many mistakes with his assistants.

  53. I saw four matches last night

=> Turpin showed a good performance, okay card criterion maybe wasn't totally uniform, but he managed the match really well. I really like his firm personality. Step closer to EL Final.

=> Satisfactory performance by Sidiropoulos but not more. He was no real leader on the pitch, and his self-presentation wasn't so asssured. I feel sorry for him, all that's happening in Greece, but I this match wasn't a good recommendation for higher tasks in UEFA.

I can't add more to what's already written a propos Çakir and Marciniak.

  54. Watching the images of the game between SCH-OPO I consider that the first PK called by Gil-Manzano it's supportable, instead the second PK is massive error.

  56. Against most of the comments here, I find that the first penalty by Gil Manzano is the crucial mistake and the second one is soft but supportable. In the first situation, the ball doesn't come directly from the throw in, it is slightly deflected by a defender which is far too close to the "offending" player to give him time to react. Also, I think the hands are in a pretty much natural position (close to the body, and also in a normal position for a jumping header) and that the movement is ball-hand, not the other way around (the arm moves away from the ball, as per Mikael's video 3rd replay). That means it is not an invasive handball to me. So, 0/3 and that's why I think it is a crucial mistake.

On the second, there is a slight touch on the right foot of the player while that leg is still in the air, which makes him to step differently and to lose balance. Is it enough? I have my doubts, but I don't see a clear mistake there.

  58. The video posted by Mikaeal shows that Sidiropoulos at least didn't remember immediately that Umtiti had been already booked, otherwise he would have shown the RC after the second YC without hesitation.
It is not nice to see that player goes out when referee has not still shown the RC.

    1. Surely better for the player to show good sportsmanship and walk off rather than staying on the pitch when they shouldn't be there?

      Delete
    2. Yes. I'm confused by the argument here. Why do we want a player to stay when he know he's been dismissed? Staying can only lead to dissent or--in a worst case scenario--the referee not realizing it is a second caution. A player who leaves immediately once he knows the second caution is being produced is doing everyone a favor.

  59. I saw Cakir's performance now. Disappointing. I have seen him so much better... Empty gestures = warnings without consequences and no clear bodylanguage, his charisma lost - I think he was feeling that his assistants were really bad and that minimalized his own presence on the field.

    1. I thought he had a fine game. Got all the decisions correct as well as control a very frantic match. Good strength to listen to AAR and cancel the goal. Only mistakes were from linesman. Not much more can be asked from a main ref.
