  1. So, del Cerro Grande could replace Undiano as Elite referee in December.
His path in recent years has been impressive, starting from 2016 Copa del Rey final, he climbed the mountain, and now he is there.

    1. I don't expect a "replacement". I guess Undiano will continue as Elite until June, when he will retire. Whether del Cerro will be promoted in December or in June, I don't know. However, we must keep in mind that he is 42 already and will turn 43 in March. That will mean that he will only have 2.5 seasons in Elite if promoted in December. A shame he developed as much so late.

  2. Surprising debut for Jakob Kehlet. I guess no one expected that.

  3. Two debutants in Rosetti era (three when Grinfeld will be chosen next matchday)... We will see Gözübüyük and Göçek soon in UCL I think...

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I have doubts about Göçek, given his age, I rather consider him as very experienced Category 1 referee, but nothing more than that. About Turkish refereeing, committee is clearly looking for Çakır's successor, but so far...

      Delete
    2. of course he won't be elite or even permanent UCL referee.. I think he deserves a chance in UCL, maybe a non-decisive match in matchday 5/6 or an 'easy' match in matchday 2/3...

    1. Maybe, you see that Rosetti is not afraid to take chance with referees from 1st group so if Bebek gets a chance, that wouldn't be a surprise IMO.

His assistants will be Mikko Alakare and Riku Vihreavvuori. FO will be Athanasios Tzilos (soon to be FIFA) and referee's observer mr Fernandez Marin (member of the Greek referee committee).

    2. I don't find logical, of course this is not Sidiropoulos fault, that a referee is suspended for a so long time in his domestic league, but at the same time he officiates in CL, the best European competition for clubs... well!

  13. Excellent NO FLAG by AR1 for Ajax goal. A defender kept ONSIDE all the opponents.

  14. 3 YC in the same play. De Jong for SPA, Mantalos and Ziyech for inmediate mutual confrontation.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Should’ve been a RC for Rakitsky IMO

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes, but a yellow card could at least be supportable (no control of ball)

      Delete
  16. In my opinion the Spanish ref misses a lof off small fouls, and missed 2 clear yellow cards for aek in first half, this leads to frustrations and behavior wat lead to the moment 3 players are booked, weak performance

    ReplyDelete
  17. Another big foul missed by Kehlet...

    ReplyDelete
  18. 77' - YC Rakits'kyy
Very borderline SPA vs DOGSO, reckless vs SFP. I would opt for a RC but don't think it was sooo clear mistake to issue only YC

    90+2' - Play-on call
Hoffenheim defender's tackle doesn't hit the ball and makes Shakhtar attacker's fall. Screenshot suggests it should have been a free kick and also RC for DOGSO.

Too laidback style for my taste. No real contact with players, lacks in alertness and awareness.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Agreed. For me stonewall RCs, especially in the first case, where he at first pointed at the ball! Overall, I felt like he was never really "in" the match, little communication and his body language was awkward. Maybe this debut came too early.

as you said, no clear camera angle, but not a red card from the view in the video in my opinin

      Delete
    3. Don't think we can opine based on practically no clear decent camera shot, gotta trust Fritz. Although that is tough sometimes.

      Delete
  21. I didn't understand what happened, even after having watched many replays. Decision taken by AAR2 Fritz, hopefully it was a correct one, but I have no evidence.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I totally dislike CR7 but this red card is a joke...just when you thought Brych cannot get any lower than he was at Serbia vs Switzerland in the WC.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. He was not low at WC. Ridiculous Fifa cost him more matches.
The cause of the red card here is not clear yet. Let's wait before we judge.

      Delete
    2. And brych was Totaly oblivious of d incident so any blame if there is should go to AAR2. He had no choice but to believe his assistant

      Delete
  23. If last game was best Brych in Paok-Benfica,then this is unrecognizable Brych.
He should have calmed the game way before Ronaldo incident.

  24. Crucial mistake by Aytekin in Bern: absolutely phantom handball penalty whistled.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Watching Young Boys - Man United as well... Aytekin was doing everything right, letting the game flow and only significant contact whistled, until minute 42. The penalty seems indeed wrong and a crucial mistake. However, interestingly, protest by the Swiss team was very soft and composed.

      replay at 33 seconds

      Delete
    3. Not sure there is a mistake here. Stopped the stream at time of contact and indeed there is a chance that this was a handball. Punishable...maybe, probably not, but I wouldn't dare to say crucial mistake.
Gutsy by Aytekin to call this given that he had absolutely no clear angle, and neither did the assistants.

      Delete
    4. The defender's hand is in a natural position just off his hip, and the ball is hit from about 2-3m away. How is he meant to avoid it? Should all defenders run about with hands behind their backs in the penalty area?

And you might say gutsy but it seems to me like he's just guessed incorrectly!

      Delete
    5. Agree with Michael here.

The hand is in a natural position and the distance between the ball and the hand is too small. Plus the ball goes to the hand and not otherwise.

      Delete
    6. Clearly everyone can see it hit the arm. But clearly it's not handling. In no way was that deliberate. No time to react and natural position.

  28. Replays clearly show Ronaldo tries to grab the opponent's hair while he's sitting on the ground. For me, at least acceptable RC.

  29. Some reports say that the RC is for pulling Murillo's hair. TBH, not a single good replay so far.

  30. My feeling is that the red card to Cristiano Ronaldo was issued for the push in the head when Valencia player was laying on the ground.

In addition, I would consider a RC for SFP at the penalty whistled. Studs in the cheek...

    1. Thanks for that. Pulling an opponent's hair? Really? Crazy man.
I do like the signal this RC sends to the football community, particularly after the "forgotten" RC for Ronaldo against Iran despite video ref.
German refs have some balls tonight.

      Delete
  32. The handball for me a soft call but still Aytekin with arguments on his side.
In German TV it looks like there was a rude foul by CR away from the ball. Brych was watching the game and Fritz called/told him. A typical CR7-frustration foul which he was so often allowed to committ and everyone here was shouting out that he should not have those privileges. Now Brych is consequent and you blame him for destroying a monument??? Come on. Let's wait until we know more.
And by the way, all the blaming of del Cerro Grande here is completely wrong in my view. He had a soft but clear line, did not make any relevant mistake, was fully accepted, perfect positioning, good communication - he remembered me to Kuipers! A convincing performance and Kehlet was not so bad, too - good average...

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. About Aytekin, I had the perception that player had touched the ball by body (not arm), but indeed this is not clear. In any case, arm is close to body and playing on would be the correct decision here.

      Delete
  33. Now another sequence of the incident has been shown, in my opinion RC is a crucial mistake by AAR2 Fritz. Nothing worthy of RC. Cristiano Ronaldo had very often such behavior against opponents... he should be sent off in every game.
He put his hand on the head of the opponent but withou any force or pulling hair...

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Well, perhaps he should be sent off in every game if he has behaviour like pulling opponents' hair in every game...

      Delete
    2. Agree. Pulling opponents' hair cant be allowed by a referee who wants to control the match. Classic Ronaldo, Classic Brych.

      Delete
    3. +1. Regardless of force, if indeed he pulled hair its a clear RC

      Delete
    4. Only a violent person who can't control himself puts his hand on someones hair.

      Delete
    5. Chefren, Ronaldo should have been sent off in many more games than he has actually been. That was a violent conduct and deserved the RC.

      Delete
    6. That was defintely NOT violent conduct lol.. there was no pulling or pushing. That was a laughable decision.

  34. Another penalty by Brych, correct decision. Very challenging game in Valencia.

  37. Watched the handball-PK by Aytekin again. Crucial mistake in deed. Not even a try to play the ball. It is really tragic with Aytekin. Week by week absolutely brilliant in Bundesliga, but whenever he enters the CL-stage: Bad star rising...

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes it's such a pity, because in terms of presence, calmness, disciplinary control he is excellent. Let's hope he will get other chances anyway. I did not watch 2nd half but apparently there was a penalty appeal by YB around minute 50

      Delete
    2. There was a penalty appeal for deliberate handball, but I think that ball touched shoulder / chest in this case.
However, it should be rewatched as well...

  46. What a difficult evening for all the referees. And Brych especially. Every match with his participation becomes difficult, but today he was the conductor.

    ReplyDelete
  47. The only referee not mentioned this evening in our comments has been Kuipers, well, a few months ago in any case this wouldn't have happened, somebody is missing here :(
BTW based on what I have read, I can report an expected level performance without problems!

    ReplyDelete
  48. Extremely difficult game for Brych. I had a feeling he never 'caught the rhythm' in that game. He whistled everything at the beginning, then allowed too much what was surely a bad choice that indirectly led to the incident with Ronaldo's red card. No consistent line through the whole game. The same fouls were whistled once and let go seconds later. Also the same as with Kehlet - no rapport with players, no warnings, talks, etc. No management!

All that gave the impression of a too hectic game with the referee who didn't fully control that.

My views regarding key match incidents:
    1) Ronaldo's RC is fully correct. It's catching an opponent's head with significant force. I'm full of praise for Marco Fritz who a) was extremely alert and aware and caught the incident, b) had guts to inform Brych what happened, advice him to send off the most valuable player on the field
    2) First penalty is a stonewaller. Kick in the face. As mentioned before, I would have strongly opt for a red card. Studs in the cheek usually, almost always, mean a SFP.
    3) Second penalty is a very good spot by Brych. No hesitation, no 'buts'. Holding, penalty, yellow card for UB. Well done.
    4) Valencia's penalty appeal. There was a holding in 81st minute that should be punished. Not consistent with Juventus' second penalty. Crucial mistake.
    5) Valencia's penalty appeal. Undeliberate handball by Juventus player. Correct play-on call.
    6) Juventus' penalty appeal. Douglas Costa is tackled after having taken a shot on goal. According to instructions, it should be minimum reckless tackle to award a penalty. Unfortunately for Brych, it was very reckless. Costa's standing leg was strongly hit by the sliding opponent's knee. Penalty should have been awarded and YC issued. Crucial mistake.
    7) Valencia's penalty. Well spotted reckless use of arm. Penalty and YC. Again, no hesitation, no 'buts'. Great reaction.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I definitely disagree about 4) and 6)! Both 50/50 sit. and Brych only wanted to give PK in crystalclear situations after he had given 2PK before. That happened in the end. An extremely challenging game and a very good RCcall by Fritz. For every other player we would not even discuss that. Thanks to Brych that he was consequent!
My only criticism on his performance is the missing clear line in his foul detection. In that point he changed his line 2 times... and that did not convince me. But still 8.3 for me!

  50. And a big problem with determining the handball. Yesterday Gil Manzano and Rocchi, today Orsato and Aytekin. There is no single interpretation in similar situations.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The handball-problem is happening everywhere again and again and that got worse after the last new interpretations of the rules. Better make it easier, just giving handball only, when there was a clear intention to play the ball would make it at least a bit easier.

    2. Arms next to body ok. Anything making the body bigger or arms sticking out should be handball regardless of situation. I think rule should be simplified to this

    3. Andrasch, let's just agree to disagree. :)

      5) is a trailing leg tackle, very dangerous to an opponent's safety. The injury only strengthen this impression, but such tackles should be always punished (as Zwayer and Makkelie showed in Nation League games!, Zwayer missed a 2nd YC though).

As it was not careless, just reckless, it should have been a penalty and YC.

And regarding 4). Not clear mistake isolatedly, but after penalty whistled in 49' one can expect consistency and whistling that one too.

      Delete
    4. 2) crystal clear penalty. should be red card, not yellow (last re-play is very clear), because Parejo saw very well Cancelo. On the other hand, an offensive foul prior to Parejo's foul in not out of question.

      4) you can't give penalty for something like that

      5) this kind of fouls, after the ball left from forward's foot, is not given by the referees. But this kind of intervention, when the ball is still in-play, shoul be a foul (last example: penalty in Salzburg- Crvena Zvezda awarded by Cakir)

      6) "forced" penalty (after 2 penalties for Juve, sunch uninfluential penalty can be whistled... :) )

      Delete
    5. About the first penalty for Juventus, well, if studs up on a leg are considered very often (and I agree) RC, this is a milestone RC as well, and one should not look at the intensity, no reason to raise the studs in that way, hitting opponent in face. UEFA should find more consistency in that.

Penalty to Valencia is for me very soft but I admit that such situations are whistled outside the box and nobody questions. For me YC is in any case too harsh. I consider it careless.

      Delete
    6. 1) Correct RC.
      2) Wrong penalty. There is a previous foul on Murillo. However, if the foul had not happened, the penalty would have been OK. YC is still supportable because of the low intensity, but RC would have not been wrong. There is an obvious reason, Chefren, which is to clear the ball. Obviously, using his head would have been far better, but it is not unusual to see players clearing the ball with such a movement. So RC is probably the best option, but YC is not wrong, IMO.

      3) Clear penalty. One wonders how a player can do that while being so close to the referee and knowing it is a punishable offense.

      4) If 3 is given, and it has to be given, 4 has to be given too. Paraphrasing Chefren, no reason to hold an opponent by his neck with your arm.

      5) Not a crucial mistake, IMO, but a penalty could be given. I don't think it is "very" reckless as Ray said, but of course there is a contact and the player is brought to the ground.

      6) One can only laugh when comments like "it was a forced penalty which you don't whistle 'in normal circumstances'". If you don't whistle such penalty, you're making a crucial mistake, because it is a clear one. The player jumps with the arm in a quite unnatural position for such an action (do you jump with one arm fully extended?), but also hits an opponent in the face recklessly. It is a stonewall foul and YC (not harsh at all, Chefren. Here in Spain, not a foul like that goes without its correspondent YC). As it is inside the penalty area, penalty. Uninfluential given the minute? Yes. Clear and mandatory? Yes. One can only praise Brych for being so attentive in such a moment of the match.

    7. 6) for me a correct penalty, as the defender uses his arm/ellbow as a tool against his opponent, so a reckless challenge.

    8. First juve pen cakir would have given RC for sure :)

  52. Watched Brych's match again. Every colleague will be happy he wasn't in charge... but no crucial mistake at all and a brave referee. Compliments to Brych and his team!!!

  53. If CR7 deserved a red card than Parejo deserved 3 red cards for the foul against Cancelo (at 1st penalty). Honestly, only a german referee (Fritz in this case) could send off a player for what CR7 did (I already told you that actual generation of german referees is a disaster, excepting Brych). Anyway, it seems that CR7 is not protected anymore by the referees, he doesn't play anymore for Real...
PS the 3rd penalty was a "forced" penalty, in normal circumstances you don't whistle such a penalty...

    1. 1) For me: RC. In the replay it seems as if Kehlet wanted to play on (signalled for the ball), but then decided to whistle the foul. So it maybe could've been a misconception of the incident.

      2) Clear foul, not sure about the DOGSO though. There are arguments in favor of DOGSO, but I'd prefer a YC here because the attacker never controlled the ball.

    2. 1) It is in my opinion DOGSO and RC. But RC also for SFP (excessive force from behind). I would say YC in any case is too soft and a mistake.

      2) Foul, but maybe attacker wouldn't have reached the ball. One can give YC for SPA because not sure about the outcome of the attack, buty you must whistle. In this case I find very strange that referee played on.

      3) It seems as the foul happens after the ball is out, so only YC to be issued and then throw-in. Small arguments for a SFP as well, but in this case YC is the best solution.

      4) Some missed fouls here and there...

My impression based on these highlights is not positive, I consider the missed foul of situation #2 very clear, and for sure the most significant mistake there, even though YC could have been enough. I can't see any reason for playing on.

    3. 1) RC for me, excessive force from behind and i would say DOGSO too as the player was well placed to shoot straight away
      2) Foul and YC in my opinion because the attacker was not in control of the ball and i also think the goalkeeper could have take it
      3) YC at least

    1. Terrible accident with two players going for the ball in a fair way. Free kick no card...

    2. Aquino has taken a lot of heat for this VAR-supported very bad RC decision. Even the Argentinean press was apalled.
Free kick, no card. And this RC was a game changer. Aquino had VAR, used It, and came up with the red card out of nowhere. Sad indeed.

  56. No much comments on Del Cerro Grande but is saw him Wednesday. It was not a bad performance but a lot things can be improved. He was afraid to take big decisions. And he missed a couple yellow card. For example https://twitter.com/SjorsvVeen/status/1042727049406947330 This should be yellow without a question. It was also a promising attack. Any other people here who watched this game?
