  1. Interesting to see Makkelie as VAR with Cakir.
I think this can be also because Barış Şimşek left refereeing after having been called for the course in Malaga for being VAR in UEFA competitions.

  2. I expected Cakir in a higher profile game

    1. I don't see this game as a very low profile one. Maybe less interesting than other games, but still an excellent appointment if you ask me. In addition, in recent times I see that (Spanish readers can confirm that) Barcelona is playing a quite "strange" football, they don't seem to be so strong as they were before. Take as example the last game, yesterday, in La Liga... I think that Lyon can fight for qualification there.

  3. With all due respect any round of 16 match is a high profile match

Penalty to Fiorentina after VAR review and goal cancel'd to SPAL.
    Seems correct decision for me.

  5. For the first time in Italy, and I don't remember this situation in other countries with VAR, a goal has been annulled by VAR and a penalty has been assigned to opponents at the same time. It has happened in SPAL - Fiorentina, referee Luca Pairetto. He had missed a clear foul inside the box before a counterattack by SPAL. The team scored 2-1 but it was annulled, and penalty to Fiorentina was confirmed. Score then became 1-2. No time for VAR to call the review before the goal as the action was quite quick.

    1. I also watched the game. Such situations are unacceptable and should be avoided in the future. I don't know how, probably the VAR protocol should be adjusted, but I don't want to see again something like this. About the foul on Chiesa: yes, it was a foul, but not that kind of foul that you are able to see from the moon (or plane, or space).

From what I remember, something similar happened in Holland last season.

      Gol di #Valoti al 73'20''
      Richiamo del #Var a #Pairetto al 74'55''
Decisione: niente gol e rigore #Fiorentina al 76'33''

    3. I think this happened a few weeks ago in the match Vitesse - Heerenveen in the Dutch Eredivisie. Here's an official video by KNVB about it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JZ48sKKx8ZQ
A goal by Vitesse is annuled in favor of a penalty for Heerenveen.

  6. Interesting to see that a Dutch delegate can go to a match with a Dutch VAR.

  7. OT:

I watched last 15' of Real Madrid-Girona and I liked Cuadra Fernández's performance. A correctly rejected PK appeal and a correct 2nd YC to Ramos for reckless challenge (attempted overhead kick resulting in a kick on Girona defender chest). The rest of issued cards were correct IMO.

    1. If I may ask, I'd be interested in your (with George, and any other readers) thoughts on Guillermo Cuadra Fernández.

He quite impressed me when I saw him, do you think he could even enter the FIFA list in the future?

      Delete
    2. From the beginning, it was clear he was the favourite of the three newcomers for CTA. Good appointments and good performances. He could make it to the FIFA list.

    3. Yep. Cuadra Fernández (1984) is having overall a quite solid season.

I think he could be a candidate for FIFA badge. Undiano's badge will be given surely to Alberola Rojas (1991) in January 2020, but in 2-3 years Mateu Lahoz, Estrada Fernández and Del Cerro Grande also will have to retire due to age limits and I think Cuadra Fernández could be a candidate to fill one of the spots at 37/38 years old. For my taste, Cordero Vega and Medié Jiménez (both 1984-born as Cuadra and the youngest non-FIFA referees in LaLiga besides Alberola who as I've stated before will surely take the badge of Undiano) lack the level to become FIFA referees in 2021-2022.

Question for George and other Spanish readers, do you think that at least 1, 2 or 3 spots will be taken by referees currently officiating in 2nd Division? If that's the case, they will have to get promoted asap, either this season or the following one. Who do you think as best prospects to promote and become Spanish FIFA referees in the near future? I have in mind referees like Moreno Aragón (1991), Areces Franco (1985), Díaz de Mera Escuderos (1989), de la Fuente Ramos (1992)...

  8. Bad performance by de Burgos Bengoetxea in Valencia - Espanyol. "Missed" a 2nd YC for Granero in a tackle that resulted in Cherysev being injured. He actually saw the challenge but decided to give advantage (which wasn't clear nor Valencia wanted it) in order not to issue the 2nd YC. TV showed he talking to Granero a bit moments later and making gestures which were clearly a warning. Missed some fouls and the disciplinary line was not clear.

    1. And a controversial situation with VAR (which, if they consider it as no crucial mistake, is right with the protocol): https://twitter.com/checharro/status/1097183101225185281

Parejo shoots. Wass is onside and is possibly fouled inside the penalty area. AR signals offside and so gives the referee. VAR checks and decides it is not a clear mistake. The game is resumed more than a minute later, when everybody has seen that it was not offside, with an IFK for offside. Although it is OK with the protocol, it is very controversial, because fans see that a mistake has been made yet, after VAR checks, it is allowed to stand. There is something similar that happened during the WC: referee (Diedhiou?) was called to review a possible VC. He saw the situation and issued a YC, changing his initial decision of no card. CTA will have a difficult time explaining this situation (although, of course, they won't as they do not talk about concrete incidents), which could have easily been solved with an OFR.

  10. OT: UEFA seems to continuously make a mistake with the name of Jochem Kamphuis. They keep on switching his first and last name, calling him Kamphuis Jochem. It is wrong on their website, and also on TV his name was shown wrong before the kick-off of AS Roma - FC Porto last week. Luckily, here his name is written in the correct way :)

  11. I've just watched Mateu Lahoz in Betis-Alavés and as usual, expected performance with no crucial mistakes IMO but too "attw" in a game that didn't need it at all.

  13. Del Cerro Grande for Shalke-City and Zwayer for Atletico M. - Juve

  14. Probably Del Cerro Grande is a little bit it overrated; what do you think ? Promoted in Elite very recently and already at CL 16 KO match. UHHMMM

  15. Taylor will officiate Sevilla - Lazio in Europe League, in spite the fact that he has already officiated a first leg Europe league match. I don't fully agree to see same officials in first and return leg. There are about 250 Uefa referees in the FIFA list

    1. His performance in Donetsk-Frankfurt was practically flawless. I’d rather have a safe pair of hands twice within a week than someone not as good for such an important match.

  17. OT I have a question about the referees who will be at Euro under 21 and their will be VAR. So, the referee who don't have VAR in their champions are blocked. And we will see Elite referees in Italy, who worked with VAR, or the referees who will be nominated for the Euro will be trained to work with this new sistem. Because Vincic, Jug, Treimanis, Kovacs and many others from the first group who could be promoted don't work with VAR.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think, it is very necessary that more referees are trained with VAR. So the U21 tournament should be a good practice for some referees, who will use VAR in the next CL season, but don't use it domestically. The VARs there might still come only from the countries, who have it in their leagues.

  18. Roccis AR1 with the third consecutive wrong thrown in direction decision in a row...

    ReplyDelete
  19. No problems at all for Çakir, maybe a harsh YC for Dubois IMO.

    ReplyDelete
  20. No comments so much in 1st half so that means good performance from both Cakir and Rocchi.
What I could see,Rocchi with one correct caution and rejected penalty.
Cakir with 2 good cautions, maybe 2nd one where Dubois fouled Suarez was a bit soft, but when Suarez throws himself you never know how bad foul it was.
    Overall ,so far so good.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Agree with Quilava and M, solid first half by Çakır. Correct early booking for SPA, other YC was a bit harsh, but Suárez made the most of it. An earlier stamp by Ndombele would have been a better choice, but it was rather early and the foul not a mandatory card, so understandable call.

  22. In Lyon, a silent check for a possible deliberate handball in the wall in the last minutes of the game.
A very calm evening of CL. I would say expected level for both referees, but surely not challenging games.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The only noticeable issue in Liverpool was the flag technique by both ARs. It didn't look very smooth. But well, if that's the only thing, the Italians did a good job in a not so challenging game.

      Delete
  23. We can discuss a missed 2nd YC for Aouar in added time. Otherwise, solid performance in a not challenging game.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think incorrect yellow card for Dubois and a super clear ”missed” 2nd yellow card for Aouar. If you go by the laws of the game and the system it’s 7.8

      Delete
    2. Very harsh, Victor. But I can understand your point of view :)
To be honest this evening I saw a better Cakir than some previous games.

      Delete
    3. That’s how the point system is. It was a clear missed second yellow= -0.5 no matter how good a referee has been.

      Delete
    4. If we would agree on a clear missed 2nd YC and an incorrect YC given, why 7.8 and not 7.9 (8.3)?

      Delete
    5. From what I know the system is -0.5 for a match deciding mistake and then -0.1 for a missed card= 8.4-0.6=7.8

      Delete
    6. In my mind first the ‘overall’ mark is decided, and after that a deduction for a crucial mistake (not necessarily -0.5) is effectuated.
If the ‘overall’ mark would be 8.3, the final mark would be 7.9 (as per agreement 8.0-8.2 with 1 crucial mistake becomes 7.8, and 8.3 and higher with 1 crucial mistake becomes 7.9).
IIRC Vlad posted these criteria on the blog once.

      Delete
    7. The marking scheme, that Dutch Ref describes, is also what I know, and what has been used at TheThirdTeam - and was based on the UEFA marking.

BTW, does anyone know, whether marks are still given by UEFA for matches with VAR? DFB had abolished them with the introduction of VAR. What about the other VAR countries - are there still referee marks?
It is at least unclear, whether you count the decision before or after VAR intervention for the mark of the referee.

      Delete
    8. From what I know in France, decisions still count before VAR intervention. If a wrong decision is corrected after VAR intervention with or wihout OFR, you are penalized (-0,5). If you take an other wrong decision after the OFR you are again penalized (-0,5)

      Delete
    9. In summary, nothing that will stop Çakir from getting crucial matches in the latter stages. :)

      Delete
    10. About UEFA, -0,1 for a missed / wrong YC must be applied to the mark without crucial mistake. So if Cakir in your opinion did OK apart froma crucial mistake and a missed YC mark must be indeed 7.9 (8.3). In the 7.9 there is the crucial mistake, then 8.3 for the missed YC.
If the performance is basically in the 8.2 area, then in case of crucial mistake it becomes 7.8. (for example two mistakes regarding YCs and a crucial mistake).

      Delete
    11. In Italy on last seson (2017-2018), the first with VAR, marks for referees were always the same ones, but in addition a new system for VAR was introduced. A scale for assessing the performance of a referee as VAR, but this, at least for last season, didn't affect the "official" rankings, it was called "empirical VAR assessment". I don't know whether this season the new marks for VAR have been added to system and then if they count or not.
The scale is from 0 to 5:
from 0 to 3 unable to perform VAR duty
from 3 to 3,5 performance with very important points for improvement
from 3,5 to 4 acceptable performance with some points for improvements
from 4 to 4,5 expected level
from 4,5 to 5 excellent performance with a great attitude to the role.
      Assessments criteria for a VAR:
      1) Communication with referee
      2) Communication with operator
      3) Time of decision making
      4) Protocol's knowledge
I try to know more about this season, if Rizzoli is still keeping this scale and if now counts for the final ranking of referees.
