  1. Slovakia again with a Spanish referee after Mateu on the previous matchday.
Özkahya again with Latvia after MD1.
Both is quite unusual and avodiable.

Good game for Kehlet, maybe a CL match in this season is possible again.

  2. IMO excellent appointments for Daniele Orsato and also Benoît Bastien, who can show his potential in this rather big game (Dutch need to win in order to reach second place in their group, currently occupied by the Northern Irish). I hope the Frenchman can show his potential there.

A question there: does this appointment mean that committee might have an interest in selecting him for EURO 2020? Considering that:
    a) VAR will be used at EURO and he's well-trained with the system;
    b) Turpin is currently having a hard time internationally and domestically (huge confusion in Brest-Rennes with VAR about a month ago).

    1. Yes, Bastien seems back on track. If he shows good performances in the next time, he could indeed be considered for the EURO.
But I don't expect him to overtake Turpin until then. If he is selected, then it would be as second French IMO.

    2. For Orsato, I would say, it's a normal appointment: A top 10 referee could be expected there, and a top 10 referee got it.

  3. Anyone know why David Luiz was allowed to play with sweatbands yesterday?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. There is nothing in the Laws of the game the prevent players from wearing sweatbands. David Luiz has been doing it for many many years.

      Delete
    2. No, they are forbidden by this June actually with all it's relatives except healthcare bands.

  4. Further confirmations from Italy that Rocchi is about to leave FIFA list on next 31 December, he wont be at EURO 2020 basically due to age reasons (he already got a derogation this season).

    1. why did Rocchi not wear the FIFA Badge last night?

    2. Becouse in Italy there is not predicted Fifa badge on refereeing kits, so in Italy you can not se Fifa badge on any Fifa referee.

  5. I think that with Rosetti it will be different. Maybe we will have the names only on the early months of 2020.

    1. This was already reported on the blog by our reader Philipp S.
      Turpin, Danos, Gringore, Buquet (FRA)

    2. Overall good performance by Turpin in a game that could've boiled over at any moment. He was very firm, even presenting quite arrogant pose but respecting players all the time - that helped him to keep everything under control.

Contrary to first half, he chose a more lenient approach towards tactical fouls in the second part of the game. That was widely accepted in this game. The only 'real mistake' was saving #05 ARG from being booked in the following incident:

  11. Just got home and tuned in to the Kazakhstan vs. Cyprus game - Craig Pawson missed a Red Card for Violent Conduct (KAZ No.9) at around 23', caution was given.

    1. Slow-paced but quite feisty game for the Englishman.

He missed a foul here and there but his finger on the pace with a good disciplinary control.

Mass confrontation was odd in that it went on for some time but players weren't really fighting that much - I would liked to see a firmer impression in those moments. What caused that mass confrontation was KAZ No.9 reacting to a LoR holding foul when on the floor he violently struck his opponent - Pawson sorted out a YC for them both.

Interesting in-box incident at 41' - a holding occurred that would have resulted in a penalty but it was very close as to whether corner had been already kicked (my feeling was not, hence penalty to be given - I don't have frame-by-frame on my television though). I guess that Jonathan Lardot got criticised for similar decision in Gibraltar - Denmark game last month in UEFA system, and he went for safer option and ordered a retake.

    2. More easy going 2H for Pawson with no player-player conflicts to sort out. He missed a RC for SFP at 64' but nobody expected it there and UEFA nowadays are happy to tolerate such dangerous fouls.

  14. Quite boring game for Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea in Minsk, not very much happened. Two correct cautions for SPA / LoR fouls, he could have sorted out another for a late tackle but decided not to. I liked his talks with players in this (unheated) game - especially a couple of early situations where he managed to 'connect' with players. A few of his whistles for clear fouls were a bit late and, fine to use excessive gestures to communicate, but clearly establish what the decision is first! His running is not of a typical athlete but his sprints (including one at +93' just to gain optimal angle, impressive) were fully effective.

I would give him an EL début this year.

    1. i think 2nd yellow card would be too hars in this moment. player didnot use clearly his arms,we can support referee,it was more defensive behaviour than intentional by the red player.its acceptable to me to show 1st yellow card but not 2nd

  16. Minute before 3rd Croatian goal IMO missed foul in favour of Hungary and YC shoud have been shown for Rebic.

  17. Hot game for Makkelie in North Macedonia.
Typical Balkan game with lots of fouls, protests and altercations.
His lenient style is not helping so far.

    1. In my opinion Makkelie is doing a great job. Good yellow cards, punishing protest and good foul distinction. Strong body language and excellent disallowed goal. He had control for 40 min and after the disallowed goal the temperature went up.

    2. Sorry, but during the first 35 minutes hardly anything happened... Boring game. Indeed the last 10 minutes tension increased and some irritations began to rise, but no major problems at all.

  19. Disallowed goal for North Macedonia in min 45+2: https://streamable.com/4lyj2

For me this is a clear mistake from Makkelie's brigade, Slovenian GK was very far from the shot and no chance to save it, even if there were no opponents on the ball trajectory.

    1. The fact that keeper can't make save in any case is not the only argument to consider: you must always see if there is a possible obstruction in keeper's line of vision, in this specific case I would like to see more replays but based on this one I think this choice by Makkelie and AR2 could be supportable by observer. For sure, never a clear mistake in any case.
At the exact moment of the shot, the player in offside seems to hide ball from keeper's view, this can be valid argument for flagging offside.

Attacker blocking line of vision GK at the moment the shot is fired. Of course correct decision to disallow the goal.

    4. Definitely not clear mistake, although someone could argue that the player in offside position didnt really change anything

  20. It is reported that Stegemann missed a RC in Ireland - Italy under 21.

    1. Very interesting match in Dublin.
In my opinion poor performance by Stegemann who struggled a lot in keeping control.
      Key incidents to be rewatched.
      - 11' YC for reckless challenge (close to SFP).
      - 42' mass confrontation resulting in 3 YC (2 correct and 1 maybe VC).
      - 54' YC for reckless elbowing (very harsh).
      - 63' another mass confrontation resulting in 1 straight RC, 1 RC (2nd caution) and 1 YC to Irish bench.
