  1. Danny Makkelie with an appointment in Matchday 3 and 4. Already 3 games, Is that commun?

    1. I guess that one of the games in Pireás or Dortmund was as a replacement, but before they were communicated on Sunday / Morning morning.

OLYBAY seems a little out of place with the other two games he got, on the other hand if he handled ATLJUV with Batista, I don't see why they would (need to) send Levnikov on Tuesday.

Or maybe Rosetti has decided to relax the regimented three game quota for the GS?

      Delete
    2. that's what I always ask, why does Makkelie always get matches. as Referees and VAR

      Delete
    3. V! And we will answer again. because he is a great referee and a great VAR. That's why!

      Delete
  2. Sergey Karasyov ostensibly could still attend the EURO, it would seem that is beyond Ivan Kružliak now. Grinfeld with Pinheiro again shows that UEFA were happy with the missed SFP in Manchester (...), and what I guess we already knew - Taylor is the clear no.1 from England.

In general, quite standard set of designations I think.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Bastian Dankert VAR in Valencia, so most likely no Brych tomorrow? Is he injured?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Not impossible, because Borsch and Lupp had a match together on Friday with a different referee and Brych was only VAR on the last MD.

      Delete
    2. Knowing Brych's appointment now, the reason might be that Dankert had Donetsk on MD2.
Furthermore it is possible that Dankert speaks Russian, because he is from the former GDR.

  4. In my opinion, UEFA underestimates group G (again). Zenit-Leipzig could be quite important for the outcome of the group, so that I expected a top Elite referee there. Especially as there are not so many top clashes on this MD and several top referees still available.

Furthermore also Grinfeld's third match already, so he also could be a replacement.

Kruzliak also with a double appointment on MD3/4 after missing out on MD 1 and 2. This time with a not so exciting match.

A bit surprising to see Kavanagh as VAR, as he didn't participate in the pre-season course.

      Jérôme Brisard (FRA)

      Tomasz Kwiatkowski (POL)
      Tiago Bruno Lopes Martins (POR)
      Abdulkadir Bitigen (TUR)

    2. In my opinion, Orel (ISR) is a good choice!
On the other hand, I do not understand how UEFA names Pinheiro (POR) for this match, in a group that also includes a Portuguese team (Benfica).

  5. I don't think Makkelie is out after this match. Can't imagine they would do MD 5/6 without him.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Makkelie is a real candidate for UEL final!
What do you think about EURO? Kuipers is out?

P.S. Makkelie is an example of openess referee! He often shows refereeing inside in his instagram!
did Rosetti allow referees to show their life in social media?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Why Kuipers should be out from EURO? He extended his career exactly for this reason. After the major tournament, he will retire.
About Makkelie, I think that nobody can impose restrictions to private life. As long as you do something fair / allowed, I don't see reasons for forbidding that.
If other referees don't do that, it is just a personal choice, they could do that as well.

      Delete
    2. What do you think is wrong with that?

      Delete
    3. Yes, Kuipers should be out from EURO. He has 4 major tournaments in his palmares: EURO 2012, EURO 2016, WC 2014, WC 2018. Does he really needs another EURO ? I don't think so. What's enough it's enough !

      Delete
    4. Kuipers will be 47 by the time the Euros come around.

      Delete
    5. There have been two refs from one country before. Why wouldn't ther be now? Both Kuipers and Makkelie. I don't see any problem with that especially based on their current performances.

Kuipers has always said (publicly): if I'd go to 2020 I don't want to block the career of Makkelie. As he still continues at the age of 47 he sees opportunities for both to go to that tournament.

  9. I read the excellent comments from Josh, and I must be say I have the same feeling about this Blog Site. He was maybe to hard, but in the last 1 year I have the same feeling about this. So it was funny to see these comments and FACTS are already delete. And I don't understand why, from every referee ,people can write negative comments and if people write comments about mr Makkelie with clips and evidence it will delete? Why?

  11. For me incredible NO PENALTY decision in Everton-Totenham around 68'. VAR took almost 5 minutes (incredible, too), Delle Ali played with the ball with his arm which was above his head, in very unnatural position and I really don't know how this isn't a penalty. VAR should be banned in England, it is ridiculous.

    1. Few minutes later red card for Son for opponent's broken leg. His tackle initiate the broke, but it wasn't really harsh - the break of leg came after the fall as a consenquence. I don't know if this is always RC.

      Delete
    2. Atkinson takes first his yc out of his pocket. After he saw the injury, he shows RC. Maybe VAR tells him it is red, but where is the OFR?

      Delete
    3. And in 99 minute NO RED CARD DECISION after blatant foul, totally missed from Atkinson, which I think was DOGSO. The attacker will be all alone with the keeper.

      Delete
    4. True, clear DOGSO. Where is the VAR?

      Delete
    5. It reminded me of Ekberg's RC in SRB-AUT of UEFA u21 EURO this summer. Both are discussable if not wrong RC (unless Ekberg's was for DOGSO and not for an alleged SFP, we don't know) just because of a catastrophic outcome (serious injury) not necesarilly related with the force of the challenge..

    1. 30': Certainly arguments for a RC, but I prefer YC in such situations, where the ball is the main target
38': Not clean, but still can be tolerated
51': Penalty would not be wrong, but as Son seems to fall down voluntarily, play-on is the better decision
60': Hard to find arguments against it. If the referee sees it unobstructed it should be an easy decision live. Therefore VAR should help here
69': With the hand over the shoulder making contact with the ball, it's a clear penalty with the new Laws. Everything else (especially the contact with the blue shoulder) becomes irrelevant.
78': Only reckless, even if the injury was the direct outcome of the contact with Son, that should not matter.
99': Missed foul, but there are some arguments against DOGSO (not going directly towards goal; unclear, whether he would reach the ball first) - therefore no VAR intervention understandable.

    2. 1st point, those commentators are awful, no wonder we have so many issues as referees when the public is listening to the absolute ridiculous comments coming out of so called "expert commentators".
2nd point, I mostly agree with Philipp S on his assessment of the incidents.
Last point, is there any way UEFA or FIFA can step in and try to fix the absolute mess that the Premier League has made with VAR? Because the English top flight is the most watched in the world it is ruining all the good work VAR has done in other Leagues!

      Delete
    3. Spot-on assessments from Phillip S.

Also to point the execrable positioning of Mr Atkinson at the penalty situation in 60th minute.

Very poor performance yesterday, after he made another controversial decision as VAR in Villa - Liverpool, disallowing Firmino's goal for an nonexistent offside (see below Andy Gray's analysis): https://twitter.com/beINSPORTS/status/1190718797340000256

      Delete
    4. I don't trust Andy Gray as far as I can throw him. From images I've seen, the technology said he was offside. We have to trust the 3D offside technology.

  13. I think Eduardo Prieto Iglesias missed a PK for handball in Granada-Real Sociedad, despite having accepted to make an OFR.

A quite similar (but less clear IMO) handball was assessed as punishable after OFR by José Luis Munuera Montero in Osasuna-Alavés.

  18. Interesting situation at '31 in Zenit. Free kick for Zenit awarded just outside the box. However, the contact was inside the box, but for me it did not look like a foul. There was VAR review ongoing for penalty, but no OFR recommended, so they must also have judged that it actually wasn't a foul

Situation also mentioned by Marco Neri below

    2. Very interesting situation indeed, the only contact happens inside and after a clear simulation by attacker before. It is very tricky for VAR to manage that. For sure referee had assessed a touch outside the box that never happened. In my opinion VAR should have intervened inviting referee to rewatch and then YC for simulation would have been correct decision, but at the same time one must admit the situation is very particular, maybe VAR thought they were not allowed to intervene because this contact outside never existed and the one inside is maybe a different thing?

      Delete
    3. Well, actually I think it should be like this: the referee spots a foul which he thinks is outside the box. VAR checks the incident and, as the contact is inside, he has to correct the referee. No OFR required. However, if they think it is obviously not a penalty, the OFR becomes mandatory.

      So mistake by VAR.

      Delete
    4. Very surprising to see that the VAR did not know how to apply the protocol correctly. In Germany, we had a different situation that illustrates well how it would have been correct. Corner kick was given. Before the ball went out, an offender has been in a punishable offside position that was not detected by the AR. After the offender has got the ball, a defender hit the ball with his hands in the penalty area (borderline to punishable, OFR for the incident itself would have been possible).
VAR Felix Zwayer checked a possible missed penalty for handball and detected the missed offside prior to the handball incident. VAR informs the referee (Guido Winkmann) and invites him to take an OFR. At first, he shows the possible missed penalty once. Right after that - and with the necessary information - he showed the referee the needed pictures, so he could see there was an offside position before the handball incident. The referee correctly changes his initial decision (corner kick) to an indirect free-kick. The whole procedure was very quick. I think that's how the VAR should have done it today. Sometimes you should show the needed pictures if words would be less clear.

  19. In SP. Petersburg goal scored almost a minute after the end of added time, I don't know what had happened before to justify this extension.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The freekick was awarded in added time and the player of Leipzig needed a treatment, so that they were over the time when shooting the goal. But it was immediately after the free kick, so correct procedure.

      Delete
  20. Interesting in St Petersburg. Referee awarded a free kick for Zenit
Imho a OFR was needed: contact is inside the area but it’s because of a clear dive. Either a penalty is awarded or decision has to be overturned awarding YC to Zenit player

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I agree, the contact is inside the penalty area and the referee gave a fault for that contact. So the VAR must call the referee for an OFR if he think it's a clear mistake. Otherwise he should tell the referee that the contact was inside.

    1. Not the hardest match, but a good performance. 6 YCs for SPA, two of them given after advantages, I really like that. One Barcelona goal was cancelled for a very tight offside that was confirmed by VAR. Ten minutes to go.

    2. Two goals correctly disallowed by AR2, the second one in second half was very, very tight. Well seen.
In first half I noticed a possible penalty for handball (minute 19' or 20'), but VAR didn't intervene.

  32. Apart from the already mentioned situations, Marciniak was good in first half also regarding foul detection, with some particular whistles that were not so easy or expected, especially with the ball away (for example, he whistled an obstruction against attacker).
Only points for discussion: possible missed foul close to AR1 and then 2 or 3 minutes later (32' in the game) possible missed YC still close to the same AR (in my opinion reckless challenge by Salzburg player, Marciniak whistled foul without booking).
However, the overall impression is that he is very alert.

  38. Dortmund-Inter, around minute 74-75: anyone else thinking that this stamp by Dortmund player was SFP? Makkelie missed it totally, game was restarted with a throw-in. IMO this should have been a RC, I expected a OFR, but it seems that this new relativism trend has also arrived in Europe...

    6. I think the entire situation should be considered instead of only a slow-motion with studs landing on an ankle. The Dortmund player plays the ball in a fair manner and due to momentum, and the opponent stepping forward, he lands on his opponent’s ankle. IMO he can never be blamed, correct decision to play on.
Apart from that good performance of the Dutch in a great game to watch. Always in full control and widely accepted by both teams.

      Delete
    7. I checked this incident and for me this contact is rather "caused" (not in the meaning of deliberate, of course, but just for bad luck) by opponent who goes in Dortmund player's path, after a fair action of playing the ball by the latter. Player from Dortmund couldn't be aware of opponent.
I think this was the reason for which VAR didn't intervene.

  39. Nothing extra-ordinary in Marciniak second half, first half had been more challenging for sure... the crucial mistake by VAR is a pity.

    1. Do you have video with this crucial mistake (handball)?

  40. Absolute joke the amount of stoppage time played by Rochi! Only 4 minutes, which he ended 5 seconds early, for 4 goals, 5 subs, 2 red cards, a penalty, and a VAR OFR that disallowed a goal. Ridiculous! You could see and hear the reaction from the Chelsea manager and the stadium.

  41. Very bad Rocchi today IMO. Bard card management in the first half, which wasn't 'violent' or agressive at all. 1st YC for Blind seemed wrong/unnecessary to me. Also: he blew for half-time when Ajax was about to take a corner.
Second half: correct 2nd YC for Blind, but wrong penalty decision and 2nd YC for Veltman. No deliberate/conscious handball or movement of the arm. Also, as Jackson noted, he should have given much more stoppage time.

  42. This will be an interesting test to see whether performance principle still applies in UEFA. If it does, this should have been Rocchi's last international match (assuming it is true that he will retire at the end of the year)

  43. For me absolutely correct decissions by Rocchi to give both 2YCs. I understand that some disagree on that penatly but commenta like Rocchi was bad, dissaster, catastrophical are just not correct. It ia obvious that, as usual, some people are here huge fans of some clubs. Since I am not fan of neither Chelsea nor Ajax and I watched more or leas the entire match - very good Rocchi tonight.

    1. Only that stopage time in 2nd half, I agree that at least 5 or 6 minutes would be correct.

    2. I feel like only English refs are great with stoppage time. They May not be great with VAR, but with stopp time they are excellent.
In other leagues we have so much inconsistencies, especially La Liga where refs are loving those 3 minutes of added time like their children.

    1. I see now for the first time the sequence.
In my opinion not a deliberate handball, VAR should have intervened.
And... why so much delay between the two second yellow cards?

    2. I think a) because of the protests from the players, it was difficult for Rocchi to locate the player and show the card and b) I think it's possible that Rocchi was waiting for VAR to (incorrectly) confirm the penalty before he showed the card. If you remember Claudia Umpierrez did something similar at the world cup after giving a penalty for handball, waited to show the yellow card until after it had been confirmed by VAR so if it was incorrect you wouldn't have to take the card away.

    3. Good explanations, Jackson, I agree.

    4. Well, I agree with the comment above that this should have been Rocchi's last international match. Maybe a decided UEL match as a farewell, but that should be it.

The first penalty could only be whistled if there is a contact with the first defender, which I cannot say with those angles.

However, in the second situation, almost everything is a wrong decision. The handball is not punishable at all. Natural position and close to the body. But before that, there is a foul on Blind that makes him fall and foul Chelsea's player when fighting for the ball. That 2nd YC is the only right decision in that situation. It is a missed foul + wrong penalty. VAR HAD to intervene for both situations (the foul is in the same attack as the penalty, so is reviewable).

The last situation is, however, very difficult to spot, so well done to Valeri there.

    5. I think no more matches would be too harsh. A normal Europa League match would be appropriate.

    6. You guys are seriously advocating he doesn't get a UCL send-off match because of this?

You take the totality of his career and understand he's one of the top 5 referees in Europe right now and... you say "no, sorry, no matchday 6 match in your last opportunity because we don't like the way you handled this incident?!"

You want to tarnish the end of his career by relegating him to the Europa League?

      Come on. Get a grip.

I think the big mistake is not calling the foul on Pulisic. But after that, the card on Blind is 100% correct and I actually think the handball call is defensible. This is not some tragic mistake.

    7. Some comments are clearly biased and you can sense that those people follow a specific team.
It is scary to see , as I believe we all are refs and fairness should apply regardless of who do we follow and don't like.
How some refs are questioning second yellow for Blind is beyond me. First he fouled Mount, referee played advantage, Blind fall over Mount who was on the ground and than he makes reckless challenge on Abraham.
It looks as clear as a day.
However the penalty that followed previous incident is debatable.
I would never give it, especially having a really good view as the ref on the night. On the other hand, once its given the VAR should invite him to check the OFR as it looked very challenging.
One big incident that is really up for debate, it treated by some of our colleagues as career ending performance!!! Ridiculous

  46. Will UEFA take action against Tadic for these comments????
Dusan Tadic on the two red cards given to Ajax:
"We should just be talking about how Ajax played much better than Chelsea but we cannot because somebody destroyed our game."
"Everything was under control and then one man steals everything from us."

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I hope not. See the clips above and you understand why Tadic says it.

Whether we as fanatic followers of the referees like it or not. It is a fact that Rocchi influenced the match in a negative way for Ajax
