UEFA VAR Training Course

Law 5 Blog can report that selected referees from nations not using VAR in their domestic competitions will be able to handle UEFA games with the technology in place from 2020-21 season.

The following referees are taking part in a number of seminars, with the end goal being that UEFA feel confident to give them a green light to handle games with Video Assistant Refereeing in use, beginning in the season 2020-21.

The participants are as follows:

Enea Jorgji (ALB, 2nd, 1984)
Harald Lechner (AUT, 1st, 1982)

  1. Igor Pajač, Hugo Miguel and Viktor Kassai handled today's games in Saudi Pro League.

  2. Can we conclude, that those referees therefore are not available for matches in this season's CL group stage and EL KO stage?

    1. Yes, pretty certainly. Manuel Schüttengruber has confirmed this in an interview he gave to an Austrian newspaper two weeks ago:

Some names on that list would have deserved much more a CL debut (e.g. Dabanović, Peljto) than others already appointed this season (e.g. Palabiyik). At the same time, names like the Montenegrin and Bosnian can still earn valuable experience from EL group stage matches, before being sent to the Champions League turf.

I don't know why, but I feel as if Letexier will make his (IMO too early) CL debut this week. Also due to the lack of Category 1 referees, who are currently at U17 WC in Brazil. Furthermore, the young Frenchman has the advantage of using VAR regularly in his domestic competitions.

    2. It is no secret that UEFA are pushing referees trained with VAR in their domestic competitions - it is very conceivable that both Letexier and Schärer will make their débuts this season.

I would even fully expect it for the Swiss: he performed well in London in an easy game under the eyes of Kýros Vassáras last time out.
