  1. As Oprah would say: You get a fourth appointment, you get a fourth appointment, you got a fourth appointment, ..., everybody got a fourth appointment... Very interesting and definitely new in terms of UEFA' refereeing....

    1. Expected, very important match for qualification and Lille is not competing for anything in the group.

      Delete
    2. That happened before. Lille has no chances event to qualifie to Europa League and therfore Turpin's match does not influence Lille at all. Since Turpin's match is a direct play off for Round of 16, guess Rosetti was very happy with Turpin in Barcelona.

  4. Dutch referees over the top. Congratulations to KNVB.
The common praxis about a maximum of three appointments for all Elite referees seems to have been definitely abolished, or at least there isn't the same strictness there was before.
I'm very happy to see again Cakir in Champions League, despite of the fact that for sure Napoli - Genk is not a game for him. But it is great to see him again there.
Important remark: Russian VAR for the first time, if I'm not wrong, so big trust by committe there.
Sidiropoulos always with the same kind of game, Chelsea - Lille is the same as Napoli - Genk but totally different background for referee's appointment there.

By the way, Rossetti came to Russia to hold the VAR seminar last month. After this Karasev and his team started to recieve more appointemnts)

  7. 8/8 Elite referees on Tuesday - probably because all matches still are relevant for qualification. Cakir's and Sidiropolous' games could have gone to First Group referees though IMO. Therefore good that Cakir got a match, but he still suffers a bit from the previous events and doesn't get a bigger appointment.
Karasev appointed on three matchdays in a row after his injury should be a good sign for him regarding EURO selection.
Mateu appointed in Portugal although Gil Manzano had Benfica on MD5 and del Cerro Grande had Zenit-Benfica - but not many alternatives for Mateu.
Makkelie, Kuipers, Taylor and Turpin with a fourth appointment in important matches - confirming they are among the most trusted officials at the moment and UEFA doesn't want to take risks there.
Kamphuis/Nijhuis with two Salzburg matches on MDs 5 and 6 - I think, this was avoided before.
Lille has German VARs in 5 of 6 matches in this group stage.

    2. Group A should be 2 First Group referees (e.g. Ekberg, Jovanonic, Kovacs, Stieler).
Bayern-Tottenham could be either Rocchi or one of the First Group referees above. Olympiakos-Red Star is difficult to predict - I could imagine Brych or Zwayer with a fourth match there, but even a top First group referee seems possible
Donetsk-Atalanta needs another very trusted referee - I would guess del Cerro Grande. Zagreb-Manchester could be suitable for Aytekin.
For Leverkusen-Juventus could be for Bastien - or Marciniak if they want a bigger name there. Atletico-Lokomotiv could be for Collum giving him a chance to recover or an alternative farewall match for Rocchi. Or just the other of Bastien and Marciniak.

Interesting situation from Lecce - Genoa: Genoa #99 runs to the ball from an offside position, presses the Lecce GK who makes a poor clearance and Genoa score.

IMO this goal should have been disallowed, as Lecce GK was clearly impacted by his opponents pressing.

    1. Excellent NO FLAG by AR1. Goal is correctly allowed. No influence by attacker on keeper. There is a certain distance between them. We can't reason under a psychological point of view (e.g. keeper does that because attacker is there), nowadays it is not enough. Something factual must happen for assessing offside. Here it is correct to play on.

      Delete
    2. I agree with Chefren's analysis.

      Delete
    3. Clearly attempting to play the ball when an opponent is close and challenging an opponent for the ball. Offside.

      Delete
    4. Using the word "clearly" doesn't make it so. The words "close" and "challenging" have meanings in our instructions.

This doesn't come close to meeting the thresholds.

It may not seem fair for those who grew up in a different era, but this is absolutely, 100%, NOT OFFSIDE. It's not even close. I wouldn't even say it's an "excellent" decision by AR1. It's an easy, expected decision.

The player is not close enough to be physically challenging his opponent. This is not offside. And if people say things like "IMO this goal should have been disallowed" or "Clearly attempting to play the ball... Offside," then they need to be told they are wrong. Because saying this things spreads bad information.

    5. usaref: SO running towards the same ball as an opponent and being literally 4 meters away from it is not enough? Non of the criterias are met here?

      https://ibb.co/N696Qj4
      https://ibb.co/qrTv6K9

      Delete
    6. No, it's not. It's not even close, actually.

4 meters is not "close proximity." There is instruction on this. We are talking about 1-2 meters. We can't make up our own standards.

He did not physically challenge the opponent for the ball (again, this has to be physical and within 1-2 meters).

He did not clearly attempt to play the ball as he was not close enough to do so. Chasing after a ball isn't clearly attempting to play it--there is no "action" that has an impact on the opponent.

And there is no "obvious action," other than running (which is not an "obvious action") that impacts the goalkeeper.

  17. Arabian Gulf Cup - Final

    BAHRAIN - SAUDI ARABIA
    REF: Lionel Tschudi (SUI)
    AR1: Jan Köbeli (SUI)
    AR2: Karel De Rocker (BEL)
    4th: Alexandre Boucaut (BEL)
VAR: Luís Miguel Branco Godinho (POR)
    AVAR: Benoît Millot (FRA)

    Video Clips:

=> 10' Penalty (tripping) awarded to Saudi Arabia; VAR supported foul
    https://youtu.be/zfy0kQx1ZLM?t=1452

=> 44' Penalty (tripping) appeal for Saudi Arabia; VAR supported play on
    https://youtu.be/zfy0kQx1ZLM?t=3532

Overall good performance by Lionel Tschudi. He had some smaller problems with foul detection in this match with a lot of duels. Besides clear missed YC for standing leg tackle at 18', his disciplinary control was good (maybe I would have been a bit more rigorous in some scenes, but no problem). He didn't really need to use authority / empathic talks much in this game, but he showed good soft skills, eg. visibly connecting with players in preventions at corners. He moves well for his tall frame but could work to improve that in the future, especially dynamic sprints. Quiet evening for his teammates; Alexandre Boucaut though looked like quite the comedian as he made multiple protagonists laugh in the technical areas!

Regarding the two (tricky) in-box incidents:

10 - Very good penalty decision, Tschudi had the perfect insight angle there, well done
44' - Penalty to be given: attacker had won the position and is tripped by the defender's carelessness. Argument that attacker changed his pace in order to be felled is not relevant; attacker was reasonably guarding the ball before being kicked. Tschudi had a good insight angle but chose to play on - quite tough for him, everything points towards simulation also the jump of the attacker (you can see he is visibly stumbled, though). I guess that Tschudi reported that to Luís Godinho and in the end, VAR team supported the decision.
In my eyes - tough, but a penalty to be given.

    Mark: 7,9(3)

A small full review of the competition will be uploaded in due course.

  18. Craig Pawson is appointed as fourth official in Taylor's team on Tuesday, which means no Champions League for Pawson this season, which is a huge surprise for me, after last season debut and very good performances in the last matches (or there was something that I missed??). I guess he is appointed in Europa League on Thursday. In case if he is not appointed, this might be a dissapointing autumn for him in European competitions.

    1. I don't think his performances were so good last season, at least his performance in Olympiakós - Dynamo Kyiv (https://streamable.com/2hcqb) disappointed me - he was really permissive.

However, I think he showed good performances in the challenging Ajax - PAOK Thessaloníki (https://vk.com/video424113568_456239050) and Maribor - Ludogorets games, even if he made a bit of a mess at the end in Amsterdam.

Against the background of those two performances, I am surprised too, also with the FA's huge influence, that Pawson didn't get an appointment in CL GS this time.

  23. Arabian Gulf Cup - KSA-QAT (Semi Final)

    Referee: Ahmed Al Ali (KUW)
    AR1: Jan Koebeli (SUI)
    AR2: Karel De Rocker (BEL)
    4th: Alexandre Boucaut (BEL)
    VAR: Luis Godinho (POR)
    AVAR: Abdullah Jamali (KUW)

The game can be divided in three parts:
    1. from minute 1 to 20 it was very fair with little fouls and interruptions. The referee stayed in the background
    2. from 21 to 69 the players started to be less precise in their interventions, thus leading to more fouls. The crucial aspect was where to set a line between foul and no foul. Al Ali understood that QAT players were falling down a bit easily at times and started not whistling every contact towards the end of 1st half. Although I could notice a change in his line, I appreciated that he corrected his previous line and tried to keep it as consistent as possible for the rest of the game.
    3. from 69 to the end he had to deal with more dissent. He kept smiling and did not make use of cards to warn the protesting players, that could have been risky but in the end worked pretty well - one must say that there wasn't any dissent that was particularly aggressive

    A few other topics:

    * POSITIONING: at 26’ his not ideal positioning to evaluate the incident led to a few protests from the players, who maybe noticed that
    * KSA GOAL: correct decision to confirm KSA goal at 27’, the attacker anticipated the goalkeeper without committing any foul

    https://streamable.com/tx0ew

    * YCs: mandatory YC correctly given at 50’ , 53’ and 71’ for SPA. One missed YC at 89’ against KSA
    * OFFSIDES: excellent offside by AR2 at 59’, followed by a probably wrong one at 68’
    * VAR: no major VAR intervention, just a few silent checks (e.g. at 90+6)
    * PENALTY APPEAL by KSA at 90+5’: only replay is shown, not a punishable handball given distance and arm position

Al Ali showed most importantly good soft skills, keeping the game calm and a very good level of communication. He might need to be more firm in some cases in other kind of games, but based on this performance he had a sensible approach. Foul detection and card management were satisfactory.

    Overall: 8.4 - medium difficulty

  33. Remarkable, in Amsterdam Valencia is taking lots of time each time they can take a restart. Turpin already with clear warning to Valencia’s goalkeeper to hurry up, and exactly 0 extra time added to the first half. Not the best time management...

    1. Quite agree, but apart from that he was really excellent. Top class performance so far.

  34. Long check for 1-1 scored by Slavia, they controlled offside and then a possible deliberate handball. Final decision is to allow the goal. Correct for me, it was shoulder and not arm, and position was regular.
VAR needed a bit of time, but for sure Russians behind monitors, at their debut in CL in this role, made a good job there.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I have just seen that there's a Russian VAR in Dortmund. Is it the first time? Some incidents to check before 1-1 for Praha. Closely no offside, good onside decision by AR2, and rather no handball (shoulder area). VAR check took long, but it's important to be precise in such an important match.

  36. Supportable penalty decision + 2nd YC for handball in Lisbon.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Maybe not 100% unnatural position, but for sure expected ball (it was a long shot) so penalty is justified. I missed whether it was a shot towards the goal or a cross, in the latter case maybe YC not 100% mandatory. For issuing YC, there should be a clear promising action (e. g. a teammate ready to control the ball).

      Delete
    2. The latter case, Chefren. The attacker was ready to shoot on the goal without any defender next to him. 2nd YC for SPA is correct for me.

      Delete
  37. 2-1 for Milan correctly disallowed for (clear) offside by AR2. Also, correct 2nd YC in Dortmund given by Karasev. As far as I can see, solid performances by the referees today.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Turpin gradually losing control of the match. He doesn’t take strong actions against time wasting and theatrical behavior of the Spanish side, and doesn’t handle the Amsterdam frustrations very well either. All in all not the best management possible.

    2. I disagree. Tonight I saw a Turpin I wouldn’t have seen a few years ago. Ajax players are getting frustrated because of the score and of course not about Turpin. Each and every yellow card was fully correct, the foul detection almost flawless. I saw a strong referee tonight in a tense match.

One can discuss about the potential DOGSO, but IMO the attacker wasn’t going straight towards the goal, so YC supportable.

    3. And yes, here we are. Turpin lost control in Amsterdam. One could have seen that coming for some minutes. Paulista got red carded and a massive confrontation (again).

    4. I agree with RC for DOGSO. Example RAP 2019:1

  39. Sander van Roekel and Erwin Zeinstra among the top UEFA assistant referees ever. I don't remember a single mistake. They very often are also able to assess on pitch situations in which last touch is by defender. Not only this season... for sure the best that Kuipers could ask for.

    2. Nobody is faultless. EL 2017/18 QF 2-nd leg Marseille - Leipzig: additional time, 4 : 2, all Leipzig's players close to penalty area because they needed to score the 3-rd goal. Then counterattack, van Roekel forgot on missing keeper, didn't signal clear offside and Marseille scored the 5-th.

    3. Ongun and duran is the besf ever trio with cakir

  40. Mandatory RC issued by Turpin after a mass confrontation.

    1. Actually, I think it is quite harsh. Tadic did exactly the same he was complaining about before: exaggerating a contact.

    2. A mass confrontation, red card and several yellow cards, and then only 1 minute of extra was added....? Unbelievable
Sorry, but a weak performance in the 2. half

      Delete
    3. @George I agree, there was no real headbutt and Tadic obviously exaggerated (as the Spaniards did continually after their goal to be honest). On the other hand Tagliafico should have been sent off for denying a goal scoring opportunity.

    4. @ George : You’re right, but I don’t really think the contact is relevant here. A headbutt is red, whether or not the contact is impressive.

    5. Thing is Valencia players know very well how to do that. Parejo is an expert. He puts his body in such a position that fouling him is almost unavoidable and also it is very clear for the referee. The thing is he also throws himself to the ground and that's what frustrates the opponents. Note that when other players tried the same, they could not achieve it (Ferran or Soler went to the ground but were not fouled). Regarding the YC for Tagliafico, I'd have preferred a RC there. The player could reach the ball before the keeper and also he was going towards the goal. But I can support YC because the first point I made was not really clear live for the referee.

  41. I want to praise Turpin’s performance tonight. IMO this very challenging game shows how much the Frenchman has improved in the last years.

When the game became tense, he managed to deal with it IMO, and it could have been much much worse. The frustration wasn’t due to his decisions / management.
Correct RC and 8 correct YC : well done !
A few years ago, he would have finished this match with 2 or 3 RC...

    1. I only remember one phantom foul against Huntelaar later in the game but otherwise well done in a VERY HOT match as stakes were very high. Turpin and his team surely showed up to work tonight.

  42. Catastrophic time management from Turpin! Only 5 minutes of added time?? It should be at least 8. And in stoppage time there was at least 3 minute wasted and he whistled after 6 minutes in total. Also, I dislike his full performance tonight, he allowed lot of things to Valencia players. I am very disappointing for what I saw from Turpin.

  43. Excellent Turpin in a very challenging game. Managed to keep full control, that was a game where you needed to use cards.
Very good foul detection, body language and strong personality. Turpin really became a strong and reliable top referee who can handle the hottest games. Well done to him!

    1. Well, if this is controlling a game, what should happen in your eyes to lose control?

    2. Fully agree. The only point for improvement in this match for him is stoppage time IMO. There should’ve been 2 more minutes in each half.

    3. I agree. Superb referee Turpin. Well done

    5. For me a convincing performance by Turpin, too. Just the time management strange.

  44. Always very tense game for Turpin but it only became hard to officiate in the last fifteen minutes. Well handled generally until those minutes. Against that background - not given YC to Ziyech for UB/dissent was really stupid and he lost the overview at that moment. He got it back though by not playing advantage for the caution to Vallejo - well done. I agree with crucial decisions (YC, not DOGSO, for Tagliafico; RC-VC for Gabriel). He blew FT two minutes too early - that was disappointing.

Key was missed YC for Ziyech to losing control for some minutes; a bit disappointing night for Turpin but no disaster IMO.

    1. 79´ DOGSO, RC. There are many examples in previous RAP-s which support or directly require RC in such situations.

90+3´ Mass confrontation fully under control, correct RC and YC. But then in 90+5´ happenned something which is beyond me. Changing player on the pitch and changed still on it. Clear violation of the LoTG, missing YC for VAL 4.

    2. I agree with Anonymous entirely - I revise my opinion that YC was acceptable at 79' (reminds me on missed DOGSO, YC given, in Benfica - Bayern 2016 game by Kuipers).

And yes, I forgot in my little report, they made a mess out of the substitution at +93', and missing caution for "entering the FoP without referee's permission".

Not the best impression from Turpin last night.

    3. 10AJX should be red-carded as well. He digged his nails into an opponent what should be deemed as violent conduct. Double red card would be fairer.

      Delete
    4. And re. 79' - Turpin was obviously fooled (as was I) by the defender who carries on running after the foul deeper into the penalty area. At the frame of the foul he has no chances to intervene.

DOGSO - missed intervention by Letexier (but UEFA will support no intervention in their current doctrine).

      Delete
    5. 79' - IMO absolutely clear DOGSO, no room for debate there. Apart from the keeper, no defender can intervene in that situation. Tagliafico is the only one, he has to be sent off here. Possibly not clear enough for Letexier, because the ball was going not directly in the direction of the goal, I could imagine a different scenario, had it happened in the middle and not so much on the side.

90+3' - I can definitely live with the RC given to Paulista, he reacts (stupidly) at Tadic's provocation (who is correctly booked by Turpin for that!) by a) trying to hit him and b) by headbutting him. Quite refreshing to see a RC nowadays in such situations given the way football is going currently. I have to praise Turpin here for not losing the overview and making his decisions quite quickly, which has allowed him to stay in control in that situation.

    6. off-topic: about confrontations between players, does anyone remember a UEFA clip (1 or 2 years ago) where a player aggressively hit with the chest his opponent in the chest too with the game stopped? If so, give me a tip where I can find it. Thank you.

  47. I watched Inter-Barca, easy match for Kuipers IMO, but for a change he did not avoid showing YCs as he is used to, everything was exactely by the book. As Chefren earlier stated, superb performance by Zeinstra and Van Roekel, their ability to assess on pitch some complicated situations is just superb.

  49. Penalty scenes from Napoli - Genk (Cüneyt Çakır):

=> 36' Penalty (charging) to Napoli, YC for DOGSO

=> 74' Penalty (handling) to Napoli, YC for SPA

Good performance by Çakır in a normal difficulty game (full highlights at the blog's side). Maybe it was just me, but not the most confident impression from the Turkish referee in this game...
