Refereeing highlights of one of the World Cup's most incredible games ever: Portugal - Netherlands in 2006. Valentin Ivanov's record of 4 SYCs and 12 YCs will probably never be beaten with FIFA's current refereeing track!

Highlights in the link below, report will be up at five o'clock this afternoon CET on our wc06refs.blogspot.com site. Would be interested in readers' thoughts!

    1. Great perfomance. I remember another similar once of López Nieto. Unfortunality Fifa no thought like me.

    2. And Sepp Blatter criticized Ivanov's performance publicly.

In fact when you look at it, it's a surprise how therecwasn't more cards, as crazy as that sounds.

Tough match, one of the hardest to officiate in history, but Ivanov did his best and certanly he deserved much more praise than being publicly criticized.

    3. There were several opportunities for an early red card that could have potentially calmed things down.

    4. What a hell of a game it was, absolutely disgusting behavior from both teams without a trace of fair play.

Very unfortunate for Ivanov who become a scapegoat quite unfairly, as the match was dirty and that he was considered as responsible of all this mess (what an easy solution to throw dirt on his face, avoiding the other problems). He was not perfect, but any referee would have struggled.

His officiating quickly became a survival, leading to a card festival which could definitely have been way heavier: one could argue that with all challenges punished based on LOTG, one if not both teams would not have been able to keep enough players on the field until full time whistle.

On the other hand, we better not imagine what this game would have become with recent FIFA directives !

    5. I remember seeing this match with a couple of fellow referees and we all agreed that Ivanov had a very good performance. I don't know what he could have done differently with the way both teams were playing.

Of course we expected FIFA's reaction because they desperately wanted a scapegoat. They couldn't admit that both teams played dirty and behaved like a bunch of kindergarten children and not as Professional National teams.

    6. Ivanov misread the game. A red card in min. 7 could have change the events on the field.

    7. I agree with anonymous. Clear red card in min.7. Very difficult match. I like Ivanov, but I don't like his performance in this match

    8. I am Portuguese.
It was a good performance by Ivanov.
In fact, he was an excellent referee. What is made of he?

Another very difficult game for a referee was Real Madrid - Barcelona, at UCL 2010/2011, with Wolfgang Stark.

    9. Ivanov was a good referee, but he lost this game...

    10. One the poorest handled matches in a Word Cup that I can remember. It's one of the clearest examples of how early and proper use of cards (Yellow or Red) can assist it taking control of a match.

In subsequent World Cups. Other referee's have tried to dethrone Ivanov for best of the worst. Geiger (England vs Colombia), Webb (Spain vs Netherlands) and Velasco Carballo (Brasil vs Colombia). But Ivanov's performance remains in a class of its own (not in a good way).

  2. http://proreferees.com/2020/10/01/pro-statement-sd-vs-la-ii/

"an official assigned by PRO heard a racial slur but failed to adequately report this observation to the lead official."

"The referee involved has been removed from a subsequent assignment and will continue to receive education as a part of PRO’s ongoing commitment to hold referees at all levels accountable to combating racism in any form during competition."

The Professional Referee Organization (PRO) has taken a step in the right direction by taking this action against one of their officials. It's a good start, but there is still much to do. As it happened yet again Wednesday night. And once again the referee crew failed to properly punish in this case a homophobic slur directed at an openly gay player by an opposing player.

We as referee's are the first line of defense on the pitch to start eradicating these deplorable acts from "The Beautiful Game".
We should not turn a blind eye or a deaf ear to hate and/or racism. Zero tolerance! Be strict, not lenient!

    1. Regarding the incident Wednesday, the incident is still under investigation and we should avoid criticizing the referees until such investigation is complete. The preliminary evidence available to the public indicates that the referee either did not hear a slur or was not familiar with the slur that was allegedly said. Referees cannot hear all 22 players at all times!

      Delete
    2. For clarification for any readers, the incident from last Saturday (LA2 vs SD) is the one that PRO has released the above statement about. There was a separate incident on Wednesday (SD vs PHX) which is still under investigation.

      Delete
    3. Correct. The statement is regarding the LA2 v SDL incident. The referees involved were C: William Hoffman, AR1: Salma Perez and 4th: Karen Callado. The referee that has been removed from her assignments is Callado.
This is a video of the incident.
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sd9lY5Nnvis

In regards to the SDL v PHX incident. Based on the widely circulated and available audio. The referee contradicts himself while discussing the incident with the coaches. He begins by saying that he didn't hear the slur. Yet by the end of the discussion he says that he heard it, but didn't know what it meant. Credibility?

      Delete
    4. Do we have proof that it was Callado specifically? The statement refers to some official assigned by PRO who heard the term and didn't report it to the center referee. This phrasing absolves the center referee Hoffman, but does not specify that it was the 4th Official Callado specifically.

The only match official from this game who we can confirm has received another assignment since the incident is AR2 Christian Lara; so, it follows that Lara is not the match official being referred to. That leaves Callado and Perez (or, I suppose the statement could possibly be referring to some auxiliary official assigned by PRO, like a referee liaison or something?), but I don't think we can narrow that down to Callado on anything more than an educated guess.

      Delete
    5. Of course PRO didn't reveal the name of the referee. It's not surprising either. But the video speaks for itself. The 4th Official (Callado) is the referee who is literally "on top of the action" when the incident occurs. The center referee, AR1, and AR2 are nowhere close to the spot of the incident. So I am confident in my assertion. But you do you bud, cheers!

      Delete
    6. Well yes, I mean I agree with you if I am making a guess! Still, quite a serious thing to guess about, even if it is a confident guess, so I just want to make sure other readers take the information as what it is (a highly educated guess) as opposed to a confirmed fact, that’s all. Have a nice day!

      Delete
    7. To bring this conversation to an end.
The homophobic player from Phoenix Rising (Junior Flemmings JAM) was given a 6 match suspension and he was fined an "undisclosed" amount.

The length of the suspension effectively ends the season of Flemmings. As the USL Championship begins its "playoffs" this weekend. Any matches left on his suspension will carry over to next season.

    Internazionale - Mönchengladbach: Oliver
    Manchester City - Porto: Zwayer
    Olympiacos - Marseille: Siebert
    Ajax - Liverpool: Hategan
    Midtjylland - Atalanta Bergamo: Kabakov

  4. Since he was appointed for Bayern's match very recently I don't think Orsato will get Bayern again in the first matchday. I think Kabakov will be appointed in EL (since it looks like he was punished with no appointment in play off due to missed RC earlier). It will be interesting to see what will happened with Zwayer after another fantom penalty call. I guess Zwayer could get a match in EL and Stieler in CL.

Tell that to all the disabled people in the world that his abhorrent "joke" ridiculed. He got what he deserved. Cold hearted and cruel people like him deserve no sympathy.

      Delete
    5. While he made a mistake, he certainly did not deserve to have his career destroyed for it! Read the article where he explains what happened and apologizes for his mistake; he is not a cold-hearted and cruel person.

      Delete
    6. @Ref Paul, all the information is in the link anonymous posted. What happened is: he sent a private message to a friend where he video'd a disabled person and joked that he (Madley) might actually be able to beat someone in a race for once. The friend then spilt this information to the media, and the Internet became rife with false accusations, most notably a widespread rumor that Madley had filmed himself having sexual intercourse with a dog.

As a result, PGMOL sacked Madley, who had to move to Norway to continue refereeing. Madley also suffered severely from mental health problems and suicidal thoughts as a result of this incident.

    7. All of which he brought upon himself, right?
      Right.
      Thanks!

      Delete
    8. If he claims to be a referee, dear all writers, HE CAN NEVER DO what he DID.

      Delete
    9. He certainly did not bring false accusations of bestiality upon himself, that much I am sure of!

For all those who lack sympathy for him, consider that someone who is guilty of shoplifting does not deserve the death penalty... there can be such a thing as a punishment that is too large for the infraction, even if it is a serious mistake!

      Delete
    10. Nope, sorry I refuse to enable that type of abhorrent behavior. As such, I have no empathy for anybody who willingly and knowingly mocks a disabled person. Had he acted as a decent human being and not thought the way he did. He would not have sent the message.
To the accusations of bestiality, I will not speak on. Whoever started those rumors is just as deplorable as Madley.
No message sent = Not having his life turned upside down.

  9. Lots of interesting incidents for Michael Dean [VAR: Peter Bankes] in the closing stages of the Leeds - Manchester City match! Red Card for Serious Foul Play missed at +92', only a caution issued.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I agree, VAR had to intervene there. However, I think Dean was good today, maintaining lenient criteria throughout the game equally for both sides. No penalty for handball fully correct, no PK for foul on Sterling supportable, no 2YC to Mendy earlier also probably supportable (SPA?), although last 2 situations are open for discussion IMO.

    1. How is he even on the bench in the first place?

    2. How does the 4th official not check him when he's entering?

This should never happen. Especially in a professional game.

      -> 1:32 - 2:00 min

IMO foul would have been the correct call.

    1. Never a RC in UEFA. Bent leg, contact made with the top of the foot.

    2. I agree. There are arguments for the RC (high intensity, little control), but also some against them, as mentioned by Anonymous. So at least not a clear RC.
And contrary to Chefren, I don't believe, that most referees would give a RC in CL or other major competitions for that.
