  1. Massa and Ekberg with committee members, for both it sounds like a welcome to Elite category. There shouldn't be any doubt about.
Excellent path for Grinfled, I must say, he looks to be ready for EURO 2020.
Karasev back in Champions League: I would have expected a different observer for him, I don't understand how much interest has committee in recovering him, also regarding EURO selection.
Taylor is now the man of big matches, incredible difference with his countryman Oliver, this was very difficult to think a few years ago, during Collima times.
Finally, a remark: it is the first time we have VAR in Champions League from Israel and Russia. Committee has opened to this option after a certain time of "training" with VARs from different countries. But still, all VARs from countries with VAR. Indeed, for Slovenia this is not possible...

    1. I have not much experience with the position of observers. But why did you expect a other observer for Karasev?

    2. Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure Karasev had a Russian VAR Team last season in a CL match as well, MD6 if I remember correctly.

    3. Dominik, I agree. For sure last season Karasev had Russian VAR as well

    4. Correct. Karasev had Russian VAR on the last MD of CL.

    5. Yes my mistake, so the remark is valid only from Israel's VAR.
About the observers, I would even expected a committee memember to check the Russian after this long absence. I'm curious to know whether he will be confirmed for EURO or not, before the Coronavirus he was planned for the tournament.

    6. Massa is very overrated and does not deserve promotion to the "elite" category: in Italy much better obviously Orsato who is the best ever, but Guida, Doveri and Maresca are better than him too.

      Delete
    7. Thank you for your explanation

      Delete
    8. With all due respect, it seems that Karasev was promoted to Elite only because the WC 2018 was in Russia and the host country has always been represented by a referee.

Big discussion in Netherland about penalty yesterday for PSV Eindhoven

    https://youtu.be/EkvZ2E91kX4
    (at 6’30”)

Van Boekel said no penalty because the ball was played but then Gozubuyuk called Van Boekel to watch. Van Boekel then gave penalty to Eindhoven.
After the match in interview Van Boekel said that he has not see that the ball was played and that he only see the foot on the foot video.
    What do you think?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Clear penalty. Furthermore, YC for reckless.

      Delete
    2. In my opinion that’s a fair challenge as the ball is clearly played (not only touched) by the defender, and the foot-on-foot contact is caused not only by defender, but just as much by attacker who slides in (and doesn’t play ball).
Actually both Van Boekel as Dutch FA spokesman Wiedemeijer deem the penalty and the intervention as incorrect.

      Delete
    3. It's interesting to see that such situations are called 'incorrect' in Netherlands.
IMO this is a penalty. The ball is slightly played, but the contact at the feet is reckless without any doubts and isn't a result of the ball played, but more a reckless tackle ending in a hueting hit at the feet.

      Delete
    4. For me also no penalty.
The red player wins the ball (he is just first to it, becaust the blue player put it too far in front of him). Then the blue player makes a sliding tackle to get the ball, but is too late and only hits the red player's leg/foot. So why is this not a foul by the blue player?

At least, these discussions show, that it is never a clear and obvious error to not give the penalty. And if the referee changed a decision, that he considers correct afterwards, something went really wrong during the OFR.

      Delete
    5. You're right Philipp. The referee said after the game that he was only shown the foot-on-foot contact and not the whole situation (in which it was clear that the ball was played). He said that he gave the penalty because of the contact and during half time he saw the entire situation and immediately thought it wasn't a penalty.

      Delete
    6. Agreed with every single word Philipp writes. This is clearly playing the ball opposed to the Saturday penalties in Premier League (AVI-BHA with Oliver and MNU-WBA with Coote).

@Flip I’m interested to know why you ‘blame’ the defender for the foot on foot contact and not the attacker?

      Delete
    7. Interesting.. Philipp S knows the bundesliga, there happened something very similiar in the game Bayern M. vs. Bremen. Toprak vs. Coman: https://i.ibb.co/yQKc5Yx/ezgif-com-video-to-gif-4.gif
Mos people on 'DieWahreTabelle' considered this not to be a foul, I imagine it was similiar in the Netherlands.

      Delete
    8. After seeing the clip once again, I have to admit that the foot contact is caused by the blue player who slides in the duel. No penalty.
Bayern - Bremen is a bit more difficult, but I am okay with no penalty here.

    3. Grazie! Very tough decision to make! Blue player hitting the white player on the leg has no effect on the movement of the ball, ball was already played by white player (own goal) before the touch. It depends whether or not the touch is enough to call a foul, it’s actually careless max. I honestly could understand a non-intervention as well. Difficult call though...

      Delete
    4. can't watch streamable link aswell.. :/

      Delete
    5. Just a question, if same situation happened outside penalty area (no goal) while ball is in play, would you call foul as this is a reckless position? So imo foul happened before the ball is in and should be called foul. Also I think it effects the touch of the ball.

    7. IMO the goal should stand. I cannot see a foul, which necessarily needs to be whistled.

      Delete
    3. Correct me if I am wrong but you do not give a yellow card to a goal keeper for the first infringement in a penalty kick then the yellow comes out for subsequent offences???? Chapman had no clue of what he was doing there man... Seemed a referee who was being thought how to referee over the headset, seemed so lost, pacing up and down.

    4. Chiagozie, MLS is still using the 2019-20 LOTG, where the YC is given for the first offense, as their season runs February-through-December. You are correct under the 2020-21 LOTG which will be implemented by MLS starting next season (and to take your point even further, the YC from extra time would not have carried over into KPM under the newer laws, so one caution for the goalkeeper in this phase wouldn't be considered his second).

      Delete
    5. The biggest issue was allowing, at first, the GK substitution during KFPM, which shows their lack of the LOTG knowledge...

  11. I noticed Zenit will be hosting a Matchday 6 game this year. It used to be uncommon for Russian or "winter" teams to host on the last matchday. Is this just for 2020 or could this also occur going forward?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think it is due to the very particular schedule of this season, however it would have been quite similar to have Russian teams at home on MD5 instead of MD6, only a week of difference (not two, like last seasons...). UEFA couldn't organize everything as it was on past.

      Delete
    2. Zenit has a covered stadium now. So, they asked not to apply the rule of playing MD6 away which leads to small but statistically significant disadvantage.

    1. Pierluigi Collina once said "I would have liked to referee a game with Maradona, it is a big regret for me having missed this chance".
All the referees who had this honor at least once in their careers will keep for sure this memory forever.
Rest In Peace Diego Armando Maradona.

      Delete
    2. I wonder if there will be a minute of silence or a kind of public tribute in today's matches, it's rare to see such thing in UEFA because the schedule of everything is planned milimetrically.

Descansa en paz, may he rest in peace.

    3. Rosario Lo Bello had the most games with Maradona playing according to this source:

Referees, who sent him off, were Jose Pes Perez (ESP), Severo Gonzalez Lecue (ESP) and Lamberto Rubio (MEX, during WC82)

  14. Mr Daniele Curcio from Referee Abroad posted something interesting about Maradona:

"I'll always remember what Michel Vautrot, a legend himself, told me during the PARIS WORLD GAMES of 2018.

"You know Daniel, Diego wasn't just a special player, he was a special person. Every time we met, he'd come into my changing room saying - Michel, you're the referee and for this reason I'll be your third assistant today. Everybody will respect you, nobody will say anything against you, I guarantee that".

    Maradona was a true leader.

Maradona, in his own way, was also a referee."

  24. Perfect Taylor!! Brave and correct decision to send Vidal off.

    ReplyDelete
  25. IMO penalty miss, but Vidal’s behaviour stupid

    ReplyDelete
  26. I can't explain why completely, but I feel a bit disapointed with the technical skill of Karasev. It's just not polished. Very soon quite a harsh foul (1'st minute, no real response). Some hard fouls.

    ReplyDelete
  27. For me no penalty is correct decision, two YCs for Vidal also correct, Perfect call by Tailor.

    ReplyDelete
  28. The problem was that Taylor seemed to be so confident in his decision that he isnt interested in VAR opinion. If he calmed a player down and waited few seconds with finger on his ear until VAR tells him to continue, Vidal would still be on the pitch probably. But either way, no excuses for the player and correct sending off.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. In my opinion that is not a problem. with this positioning and clear view on the situation, Taylor has every right to be confident and wave the protests away. And players have to respect the referee and control their emotions a little bit, especially if they know that there will be a check by VAR.

      Delete
    2. And players should not forget that the referee is a person and can also get annoyed/angry

      Delete
    3. No, the problem is players have got away with this kind of behaviour for far too long. The referee rightly acts like VAR is not there and makes the decision on the pitch.

Taylor then puts his hand out once the ball is out of play to stop the throw-in taking place, he doesn't need to do any more.

      Delete
    4. After the first YC Vidal, who sees himself being a true warrior of the game, made 2 steps forward to Taylor shouting Wright in his face from 20cm. That questions the authority of the ref in an absolutely unacceptable way, if the decision from before is right or not. IMO we can discuss even a pure RC here!

      Delete
  29. Now in 52' a possible penalty to Inter, in this case rather penalty than play on. Holding off the ball. Very borderline maybe one can still agree with VAR supporting, but I'm not 100% sure, however for sure Taylor missed the incident, like it happened in Borussia Dortmund - Lazio.
Should be carefully checked whether this was a bit mutual or not.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The Inter player also uses his arm a lot in this situation and somehow pulls himself around the defender - who however also holds too much.
Therefore for me acceptable decision to play on, although a penalty would not have been wrong or even the better decision.

      Delete
    2. I agree, borderline decision, but IMO correct in the end not to whistle a penalty.

      Delete
    3. More penalty than play on, especially after PK given to Real and Vidal sent off. All 3 big decisions went in favour of Real Madrid. Top referees balance their decisions when opportunities arise...

      Delete
  30. During the break in the tunnel Handanovic had conversation with Taylor.

Handanovic said that Vidal didn't insult Taylor and that he doesn't speak English so Taylor couldn't have known what Vidal said to him. To which Taylor replied: "That doesn't matter, and if i knew what he said he would probably get a straight red"

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. IMO it is total irelevant what Vidal said to Taylor, his beheviour and body language towards Taylor were enough for two YCs...

      Delete
    2. An I agree with Taylor - in case Vidal insulted him in Spanish (which I dont say was the case), but in case it happened and Taylor did understand I am sure Vidal would get straight red...

      Delete
    3. Agree with Taylor. No matter what Vidal said to Taylor, his body language confronting him was enough to get a 2YC

      Delete
    4. Great remark and absolutely the point.

      Delete
    5. Teylor's very bad game. A very soft penalty for Real. During the match there were two soft situations for Inter and there was no reaction. The red card for Vidal was a consequence of Teylor's failure to react to the same soft foul. Very weak match of the leading referee, he makes at least two controversial decisions favorable for Real. Another game in MD4 in which VAR does not react to the obvious error of the referee.

No natural authority, no convincing body language and some differences in foul detection, bad communication but good decision in defining moments... Strange. The way he whistles... 5. Exactly this is what I felt. He did not make many mistakes, but he never convinced as a leader.

  41. Very unconvincing performance by Massa today. I think his main weakness is lack of personality on the pitch. Clear foul on the build up of City goal not given; clear penalty to city in the second half not given. Irrati should have intervened especially on the penalty situation. Generally, not an elite referee.

    1. I agree about the foul before the City goal but IMO there is no penalty.

    Headlines Translate:

Atletico players were unhappy that the Referee (Slavko Vinčić) spoke Russian with Loko players

    What you think guys???

    1. As we saw in the UEFA documentary (e.g. Kuipers speaking Dutch with Lukaku or Skomina speaking Italian with Italian teams), it is completely usual that referees use their common language, if available, when communicating with players.
That should not really be a problem.

    2. I don't see why he would not speek Russian with Lokomotiv's players if he knows Russian? Furthermore I am 100% sure Vincic and Oblak (Atletico's goalkeeper who is Slovenian) spoke in Slovenian...

  43. Vincic can not speak russian, so this is again bullshit.

  44. Have anybody saw penalty from Vinčić in Slovenian league? From 2:00

    1. Difficult to say for sure without a good replay but it looks like defender kicked the attacker in the head. Correct penalty IMHO.

    2. Shouldn't this be an indirect freekick to the defending team?! The attacker tries to head the ball at hip-level or below. He's endangering his own safety. You don't see this all too often, but I would say this falls under the following section of the LotG:
Playing in a dangerous manner is any action that, while trying to play the ball, threatens injury to someone (including the player themself ) (...)

      So incorrect penalty for me

  45. Taylor and Grinfeld were praised here but their performances were not so good. Englishman chose to not caution players in situations that demanded such action (Alexis' simulation, dissent at rejected penalty appeal, etc.). Grinfeld missed two mandatory bookings as well.
