If anyone is interested, I started a blog covering all matches from World Cup 1994. I will try to upload at least one match a day. Feel free to comment and participate in discussion there, I am happy to answer any questions users have!

    1. Is AR Ivanov the same as referee Ivanov 12 years later in the infamous Battle of Nuremberg? Did he attend two World Cups,as AR and referee, respectively???

*comment here since the wc94 blog does not allow anonymous:)

    2. Thanks Anonymous for the shout - so that's why there were no comments on the blog :D.

Indeed, that is 'our' Valentin Ivanov who attended WC 2006. I just watched his second game and he has been the most impressive linesman so far actually. Surely he will be the last man in history to achieve the feat of attending separate FIFA WCs, both as assistant and referee.

      Delete
    3. Surely, the last, but... was he the only one (after 1992, when the specialization was officially introduced by FIFA)?

    4. Will share the link on my social channels. Nice job there.

    5. @Mikael W : Massive shoutout for your initiative, it is a good idea and I'll follow all your updates on the blog. Though, I have a recommendation for you, if it is possible: it would be great to have those performances supported by the videos, uploaded on streamable. It is just a thought, I guess it is more complicated, but the result should be a nice one

    2. Papapetrou deserves an appointment, at least in Europa League.Greek referees under the current regime in greek refereeing are not given importance by the committee. However though, I have to say that some of them ex Diamantopoulos, Skoulas would deserve a chance and the new one Fotias is a great young scientist with Phd and great studies on space. He is only 30 and very educated.

      Delete
    3. @Unknown But the most important thing is, is he a good referee? ;)

      Delete
    4. I believe that refereeing needs well educated people. Education gives you the right mindset to make fair decisions. Unfortunately now , apart from Germany who honours academic excellence in refereeing, the other European countries do not. They promote the idea of refereeing as profession. This would put great scientists off from starting a refereeing career. Mr Fotias has a phd , 2 masters in the UK and has worked in space research for years. In my opinion, he is a very intelligent referee who obviously comes from a country where refereeing is not what it should have been in many different ways.

    5. How its possible to see the Greece FIFA list for 2021 already posted on official HFF website?? Before any FIFA approvals.

      Delete
    6. The national FAs have the right to publish their nominations if they wish. Some do, some wait for FIFA conformation and some do not publish even after their nominations are approved. It is up to every national FA.

      Delete
    7. Spanish CTA publishes the FIFA list changes for the following year in the same report with promotions and demotions.

      Delete
    8. Any changes in Spain for 2021? Who will be the Spanish VMOs?

      Delete
    9. @Anonymous no changes are expected for 2021, I don't think that Spain will nominate specific VMOs (there are only two for now in LaLiga, Ignacio Iglesias Villanueva and José Luis González González)

      Delete
    10. According to the new regulations, VMOs can be recently retired referees or active referees and ARS who can be on both lists. The example from Greece posted on this blog, with Sidiropoulos & Co. on both the referee and VMO lists clearly illustrates this possibility.

  4. Weird situation in Levante-Alavés. ALA16 sent off for 2YC (unsporting behaviour) for kicking intentionally a second ball into the FoP when Levante had already resumed the play with a throw-in. Referee is Isidro Díaz de Mera Escueros (1989, 1st season in LaLiga and possible future FIFA)

      Delete
    2. So an excellent decision makes someone ready for the FIFA badge? In that case, I'll get one too. ;)

      Delete
    3. Well I watched him more than once and I think he's a quite good referee! :D

Of course it's his first season in LaLiga and he needs to get more experience but he would be right now my #1 choice for next Spanish FIFA, even ahead of Alberola Rojas or Cordero Vega.

Good performance overall in this match, btw.

    1. I don't understand which analysis do you want :)
I can just make a prediction, as I don't follow CAF so closely, however I think Mustapha Ghorbal because he had a quarterfinal and he was out from semifinals, also, now he seems to be maybe CAF nr. 1? I don't want to exaggerate but this is what I perceived from this last assignments.

      Delete
    2. The candidates considered by CAF are Ghorbal, Gomes and Tessema.

Penalty by Kulbakov in Belarus. This is almost as bad (if not as bad) as Kassai's penalty in Shakhter vs. City.

    1. Upon 2nd look, my prior judgement was hasty and wrong. I believe that there is contact prior to the slide.

      Delete
    2. Ouch. Possible 'slight' contact from behind prior to fall? Live seems like a poor dive and decision, but maybe...

      Delete
    3. Reminds me a lot of the brilliantly executed simulation by Uruguay player Morales which fooled Jan Wegereef at WC 2002.

By the way - Sciacuryn was excellent in the title decider yesterday, including a correctly awarded penalty.

      Delete
    4. I respectfully disagree. Although this was a challenging match, in my opinion Stetsurin missed two (maybe 3) penalty kicks.

      1. https://youtu.be/LEpXUwmNX2U?t=1490
I am torn on this one, but in the end I am ok with such a small contact not being whistled in a title deciding match. - Supportable

      2. https://youtu.be/LEpXUwmNX2U?t=1907
A reckless tackle that should be punished with a PK and YC in my opinion. One might question who initiated the contact, but I think both players come at eachother but the keeper takes out the attacker with the slide.

      3. https://youtu.be/LEpXUwmNX2U?t=6080
      Good PK decision.

      4. https://youtu.be/LEpXUwmNX2U?t=6362
This PK should be given in my opinion (plus YC). Yak is kicked in the legs off the ball.

In the end, I don't think these

    5. Ignore the last sentence.

    6. IMO
Kulbakov: No penalty, absolutely wrong call.

      Sciacuryn:
      1. No penalty, correct decision
      2. Penalty would be the correct call for me.
      3. Clear penalty.
      4. Mandatory penalty, there is a clear contact at the legs, which causes the fall of the Yellow player.

      Delete
  8. Gil Manzano with three correct PKs against Real Madrid in VAL-RMA, the third one after OFR.

  9. I would love to see the video of the first one, where it was saved then asked to be retaken and the second was missed then scored on the rebound then VAR rules it out for encroachment and it was asked to be retaken? Technically 5 penalties

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Full sequence is:

-Carlos Soler misses penalty, saved by Courtois.
-After some rebounds and kicks, Yunus scores.
-VAR checks the action, both Yunus and Lucas Vázquez invaded before the penalty kick. As there's an encroachment by players from both teams, PK is retaken.

      Delete
    2. Honestly I have been scratching my head on what the LOTG says with respect to this allowed goal, I urge everyone to watch that sequence and tell me what they think because I feel that the player who encroached did not score the rebound, the player who had the penalty saved by the real madrid keeper was the first to react and he played the rebound which came of the post before the player who encroached now got the ball and scored. Now I ask, the penalty taker who plays the rebound does he not nulify the player who encroached already?

      Delete
    3. Encroachment by both teams is always a retake, isn't it?

      Delete
    4. Then the answer is simple; no need for "head scratching":)

      Delete
  10. Very convincing performance by Letexier during Lyon - Saint Etienne derby. Just a very harsh YC but overall firm, fit and positive approach especially at the end with double YC and excellent management. OFR by Turpin with another hand. Good decision to go to PK.

    1. Interesting to notice that some appointments have been prepared together with Under 21 matches, a Swiss crew has been sent to Portugal, Bieri will officiate this friendly while San will be in charge of Portugal - Belarus under 21 the day after.
So I think we can't exclude that Schärer could be in charge of Portugal's national team game against France, this would be a more than big assignment for him.

      Delete
    2. Besides Portugal, Malta and Netherlands and Turkey and Wales are the other 4 countries that have 3 homes games for friendly, U21 and Nationals League in less than 1 week.

Let’s see if UEFA will send referee teams from the same country to these host nations.

      Delete
    3. At least not in the case of The Netherlands.
Massa (Italy) will be the referee for the friendly game and Netherlands and Italy are in the same Nations League group, so impossible to have an Italian referee there.

Very rare to see him in a friendly, indeed this confirms the technical choice for EURO play off with Mateu.

  18. Interestingly, both the Macron (e.g. Maresca) and the adidas (e.g. Osmers) kits are used today.
Maybe not so clear, whether these are UEFA or FIFA matches.

    1. Most referees wore FIFA badges in the friendly games tonight.

but the referee from Lithuania wore the UEFA badge in Malta vs Liechtenstein and it seemed to me that his assistants wore FIFA badges.

  19. What a mistake to allow Croatian goal by Slavko Vincic...
Clear handball leading to rhe goal, IMO even AR1 could see this blatant handball.

    1. Agree with you but it is very difficult to detect the handball by Vincic. But AR1 can see that.
Does anyone know why Norway-Israel game cancelled?

    2. A player from Israel tested positve so they annulled the game.

  20. Curious detail, AR1 in Ned-Esp is like 3 m away from the touchline. I have never seen that before, I wonder if he prefers it for some reason or there is another reason.

  21. U21 friendly today
Germany - Slovenia: Kristoffersen, Hummelgaard, Rasmussen (DEN), Günsch (GER)
3 penalties given in the match, the 3rd rather doubtful.
