  1. Interesting yet unexpected set of appointments. Good to see Orsato back after 3 weeks of no games. Unexpected appointments in the group of Napoli, which is one of the most competitive. Good games and observers for Verissimo and Martins. Good to see Rumsas, Glova and Nyberg given more games - I think they're great talents. Also great to see Stephanie with one more - Euro2020 for her maybe?

  2. Very strange to see Orsato in Europa League. The particular thing is that AIA had already released the international appointments for this week , here: https://www.aia-figc.it/dettaglio.asp?ID=17668 and only Guida and Massa were reported. So I guess this can be a replacement for another referee, also because Orsato changes again the assistant referees, and I would have not guessed him in Europa League. However, very nice that he ras recovered after a long time of absence.
Some names who were mentioned on the blog as not apppointed so far, are finally back: Bognar, Agayev... very good for them.
Important observer for Verissimo, the focus by committee continues.
I also like the game for Radu Petrescu, a very good one if you ask me. Big plans for the Romanian as well.
Treimanis in Europa League after the very discussed Manchester City - Porto...

    1. In my opinion, Petrescu's game is rather "unimportant": Rangers FC and SL Benfica have 7 points each and will remain at positions 1 and 2 after that game irrespective of the parallel game's result between Royal Standard de Liège (0 points) and KKS Lech Poznań (3 points).

  3. In Nederland, there are many cases where the correct dicision is changed to the wrong dicision rather than the wrong intervention of VAR.
Domestic media (De Telegraaf) reported anonymous referee's comments: "Refereeboss Dick van Egmond is putting pressure on the referees, who ignores the advice of the VAR, the next round is free. According to him, the VAR is always right."

Dick van Egmond says: "Since this season, there has been an explicit instruction from UEFA and FIFA that referees who ignore correct VAR advice should be addressed more explicitly."

Van Egmond admits that Dutch arbitrators are sometimes punished with a week off if they unfairly ignore a VAR advice. "But I don't really understand the problem. Internationally, you will be on the sidelines for three months if - despite a good VAR procedure - you stick to your wrong decision."

What do you think the referees are under such pressure in front of the screen? I don't think it makes sense to do OFR in this situation.

  4. Rumors say Orsato has recovered from Covid! Luckily, everything went good! Good luck!

  5. Finally Aliyar Aghayev is back :)

  6. Some interesting facts from the appointments so far.

Matej Jug is the only 1st Group referee who is appointed on each MD. The other one is Hategan (UEFA Elite).

Petresku, Schärer (1CL, 2EL), Kehlet with 3 appointments each. Definitely a very good signal for the Romanian referee.

Massa also has 3 appointments but all at CL.

Surprised to see Sanchez Martinez without an appointment yet.

  7. Sánchez Martínez is injured since mid-October, that's why he only gets VAR appointments.

  9. Frappart with another Europa League game. Granada can be tough to manage.

  10. Molde FK (NOR) - Arsenal FC (ENG): Peljto and his team removed, observer as well. No referee at moment for the game in Norway.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It is reported that someone in Peljto's team tested positive for covid-19 after their arrival to Molde, and subsequently the whole team is quarantined. Stefanski, Golis and Myrmus will replace them, with a Norwegian Fourth Official.

      Delete
    2. Very sad...How do they get back home ??

      Delete
    3. Admir Šehović seems to be the official tested positive.
He has been replaced, but Peljto and the other assistant referee have been confirmed.
It is different from what Anonymous reported...

    4. The information about Stefanski and his team was reported by Norwegian news channel TV2, their article about it has now been edited to the news that Chefren reports. Golis will replace AR2 and Stefanski will be Fourth Official.

  11. Most interesting appointments for LaLiga MD11: Gil Manzano gets Real Sociedad-Villarreal (1st vs 3rd) and De Burgos Bengoetxea gets Valencia-Atlético de Madrid.

Sánchez Martínez again appointed as VAR so might still be injured.

Ivan Bebek (CRO) will handle Aris-Olympiakos

  13. OT

Ivan Bebek (UEFA 1st) has been appointed to be in charge of the ARIS-Olympiakos match on Sunday. His Assistants are Goran Pataki and Dejan Zobenica. There is no VAR appointment yet since the Croatian who was initially appointed is positive to Covid.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Just a small correction - it is Bojan Zobenica instead of Dejan ;).
My guess is that Goran Gabrilo was initialy appointed as VAR (currently only specialized VAR in Croatia, he retired last season from refereeing to become VAR expert).

    2. Dario Bel will be VAR in the aforementioned match

    3. I just hope they wont bring with them the technician from Slaven Belupo - Hajduk game 🙃

    1. Based on these appointments, it looks like Orsato will officiate in Champions League on next week either on Tuesday or Wednesday, otherwise he would have got a game also in serie A. He will appear as fourth official to a former serie B referee, a role in which I didn't remember Orsato in serie A on recent seasons... very likely this evening's EL game is a warm up for a bigger UEFA assignment next week.

    3. LIV-AJX Orsato is impossible, ‘cause ATA is in that group

      Delete
    4. Soares already took charge of Lazio once in the group stage and I don't think they would appoint Bastien to IBFK-RBL since Paris is in the same group. Same with Lahoz on BMG-INT, since RMD is in that group.

      Delete
    5. I don't think that Kovacs is available for MD5, because he got the virus. He is home, if is ok, maybe in MD6. He was replaced by Hategan in Manchester.

  19. Missed PK for Gent by Glova in 31min

  20. Possible missed offside in Sparta 2nd goal?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I re-watched the situation and paused when ball left the foot of the passing player. Without calibrated lines,it is impossible to make a 100% correct call, bit it looks like Celtic Nr.2 is with his shoulder on the same height as the goalscorer. IMO correct to allow the goal. Without VAR, it is very hard for the refereeing crew in that situation, but we say "in dubio pro reo" so I'm okay with the goal.

      Delete
    2. IMHO correct to allow this goal, but very hard decision for AR.

For Mr. Stieler not difficult match and overall good performance with minor issues in positioning and foul detection. Some of them seemed really easy to detect, but R did not manage to do so. Nevertheless his strong personality is a big plus.

      Delete
  21. Terrible penalty call by Kehlet, for nothing and outside the box.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I agree with you, incident was outside, really short distance to the box if he whistled the contact with the captain who accidentally touched his opponents face (player didn't protest, just held his face short).
Another possibility could be a handball penalty. Player didn't touch it with its hands, but it probably could have looked like from Kehlet's perspective.

      Delete
    2. It should be for the "handball", because of the moment of the whistle. There would be no reason to wait that long after the first "offence".
Then also a missed YC for the player, who got the ball into his "crown jewels". The given YC could be justified for dissent.

      Delete
    3. Both offences would never be penalty, after closer review I would agree with you Philipp, penalty for "handball", then missed YC for the "offence"

      Delete
    4. It is a clear handball by the captain (no. 2). Kehlet also clearly shows it is this offense and not the phantom handball of 77 he whistles. Producers shows terrible wrong replays. PK is 100 percent correct.

      Delete
    5. Yes, that should be the explanation.
However from the pictures available, it seems to me that the arm is in a natural position.
And the YC for handball would be wrong, because it is not a shot on goal or another SPA.

      Delete
    6. Can you share the video of the penalty ?

      Delete
    7. I think the defender’s reaction says a lot. After the ball hit his arm, he rushes to get them into the body/behind his back. Furthermore, the ball has a long way to the arm giving the defender any chance to avoid the contact. YC is clearly for dissent, and is IMO supportable.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. There were two different actions by the player, i personally would have whistled the first one and gave the 2YC for that offense, but Aghayev didnt see it. The second one wasnt that hard, wouldn't say that it was a mandatory YC. Because there were only a few seconds between both situations, I would say supportable, maybe 4th official told him

      Delete
    2. IMO, this a correct and nearly mandatory YC for an elbow into the face.
At least, it is clearer than the 2YC by Tohver, which is also supportable IMO, but rather harsh.

    3. Terrible mistake, again by AR2 Spasjonnikovs, just as in Arsenal - Stade de Rennais in 2019. To be honest, if Treimanis was in an much earlier point in his career, IMO he could consider getting a new AR2: in my view Spasjonnikovs is not exactly on the level that Treimanis and AR1 Gudermanis is (but I may be wrong). But at this point that wouldn't be a good option because there is no great other choice in Latvia, and changing an AR would be a huge decision with many consequences, mostly related to cooperation and experience issues.
So let's wish Spasjonnikovs a fast forgetting of this incident and successful future games!

    1. Yes, I was surprised to read his name for that game on Sunday too. I was expecting a 'safe pair of hands' eg. Ščarbakoŭ. However, the committee (rightly, in my view) supported Sciacuryn regarding the four KMIs in the Shakhtyor - BATE game, and he has definitely been the best referee this season. So a good appointment - I just hope they haven't put him under too much pressure after the R28 game as you mentioned.

Andrej Vasilievič has Shakhytor's match, and the ties in the 'fight' for EL will be handled by Kul'bakoŭ and Kurhchieli.

Who do you think will handle the relegation playoff matches? My guesses would be Šymusik (who UEFA seem quite interested in, thankfully more than Kurhchieli) and Ščarbakoŭ in that order.

    5. Well, "scandalous" is for sure a too harsh term. Please moderate your language! We are talking about a situation that can happen in many games.-

      Delete
    6. Not scandalous, but big mistake. A pity!

      Delete
    7. Well, you need to have really strong justification to whistle a foul on the attacker after a gk makes the save and colision happens. This particular situation does not have a single element in favor of the pk decision IMO. If the ball goes pass the gk, we can discuss who made the potential offence, but this way never a pk.

    2. Please tell me that there wasn't VAR in this game (at least...).
One can still understand referee on the pitch as he didn't have exact perception of the incident, very clear RC for SFP.

      Delete
    3. I respect your nuanced opinion Chefren, but to me, there's really no excuse (especially at this level, but really on any level). The ref has clear sight of the situation, can see the tackle coming (my mind would already start reaching for my back pocket) and even if the actual hitting point wasn't so nasty, it should have been a red card. Ball is meters away. The defender has one objective: stopping the opponent. No intention of playing the ball whatsoever, so red card all day.

      Delete
    4. Really one can excuse the Referee but it is the assistant ref, right under his nose, you can see where the referee ran from to issue the card, might not have had a great perception but the assistant had to input there, and with how he was waving his flag, you would have thought he really got the call spot on

      Delete
    5. A nasty tackle, it is a shame that a RC wasnt given.

Referee was to far to see it perfectly (the question is also why he was so far away), but the AR had to tell him immediately.

    2. In the end, Vasilievič's match was much more eventful - RC (for foul and abusive language?), a very interesting penalty appeal (82') and league winning goals in additional time. He did a good job from what I could see second-screening.

I was surprised Sciacuryn added only one minute on at the end, but very little happened in that second half. BATE didn't seem to complain about it either. Calling his performance "poor" is too much IMO, he had ten/fifteen minutes were his technical accuracy was too low, but besides that it was okay. I am interested to see what resonance the penalty has in Belarus - the ball was otherwise going straight to a Dinamo player, though I maintain my view the penalty was wrong.

Even if Inter wins, Borussia still has qualification in their own hands.
