  1. So Rosetti decides to appoint a very good ref in Paris, despite an important 4-1 in the 1st leg. Seen the facts that happened with Aytekin, I think is a good choice.
Turpin obtains an other sonorous match: the best season in UEFA for him so far.
Happy English referees are allowed to travel again

    1. I honestly don’t get Rosetti’s love for Taylor. Oliver is by far a better referee than him and it’s not even close!

  2. Interesting to see Anthony Taylor on PSG vs Barcelona considering he is one of the top refs and i was expecting him to get a higher profile match and not a match that is pretty much over. Happy to see Turpin but was expecting him to get a bigger match like Sevilla vs Dortmund or Atletico vs Chelsea. Wouldn't be suprised if Michael Oliver is given a game next week or a Europa League tomorrow depending on travel restrictions and so on

    1. I suppose they wanted to avoid risk given the last time these teams met, which was also seemingly done after 1st leg. Also, Taylor was originally appointed for 1st leg but was replaced by Kuipers so it makes sense to re-appoint him. I imagine we will see more of Taylor later in CL and EL, as long as travel restrictions allow.

Hope to see Oliver too, most likely in EL now.

      Hopef

    2. Yeah that does make sense and i wasn't aware that Kuipers replaced Taylor for that match so thanks for letting me know. Hopefully one of the english refs will get a semi-final in either the Champions League or Europa League

    3. How do you know Taylor was replaced by Kuipers?

    1. Marciniak had COVID and said that he would have taken a break till april and get back in good conditions to ref KO stage most important matches.
Hategan is not suspended because he had a match this weekend out of his country.

    2. And Marciniak refereed in Greece.

    3. It is possible,Marciniak is back for next week

    4. Marciniak mentioned in an interview today that he has been recovering after covid infection recently. He stated that he feels well now but still got some problems with high intensity excercion and wants to be 100% ready before coming back to CL or EL matches.

He also stated that he will appear in a WC qualifier game this month and believes that some CL/EL game will follow.

Disallowed goal after report by AR1 (referee had missed the incident, as you can see).

    1. Excellent support by the assistant-referee !!
One of my first instructions when I started refereeing was 'Never, turn your back to the ball. Never move with your back to the ball'.

    2. In the end correct, good cooperation in the team.
But that is not preventive refereeing, as Jaak said.

  5. Is Taylor well ahead of Oliver in the eyes of UEFA? In England it seems the other way that Oliver is still in front!

    1. I’m from England, and I can honestly tell you that Taylor is a very good referee, but nowhere near Oliver.

I watch them both on a regular basis and Oliver hardly ever makes mistakes but Taylor got away with a lot of very high profile mistakes last season! It doesn’t make sense, Collina didn’t even appoint Taylor to a high profile game let alone KO but appointed Oliver to a champions league quarter final despite him only being 33 at the time! So it is clear who is the better referee!

I am beginning to think Taylor has some sort of leverage over Rosetti now 😭

      Delete
    2. Taylor's performances in Europe have been very good, his style fits better there than in his home country, honestly...

      Delete
    3. In the Premier League, Oliver is heads and tails above Taylor – Oliver's style is perfectly suited to the PL and he simply excels. Taylor is in general good, and this season has actually been quite excellent, but has been very prone to making big incorrect decisions in big matches.

Taylor's style is perfect for European football, IMO. Whenever I've watched Oliver in Europe he just doesn't have as good a grip on most matches as he does in England. Taylor just fits right in, though.

      Delete
    4. What do you mean by style? I don’t understand

      Delete
    5. @Furqan It’s no secret that English refereeing is a bit different from the rest of Europe, especially when compared with what UEFA expects in international matches. Most notably, Premier League is more physical, and the players generally expect more lenient refereeing. I think the relationship between players and the referee is different, too. For example, English footballing culture prides itself on trying to be more honest than in other places; they don’t try to con the referee as much.

This all leads to most PL referees being, in general, less mobile, less aggressive/intense, more lenient, and more personable than a typical UEFA referee. It is a very “old school” kind of style that isn’t really suited for the modern international game where the players know that they have a job to do and will go to any lengths to get that job done.

I don’t watch too much PL myself, but I hear that Taylor is one of the stricter referees there. Oliver is quieter and more personable. Oliver is more of that “old school” type that is more suited for the Premier League, while Taylor is a more modern, more technical referee, more suited for UEFA’s rather unlenient expectations.

  8. For the last 4 R16 matches, the obvious names would be Hategan (if allowed), Mateu, Oliver and Orsato.
Oliver is only possible in Munich (due to Real-Juve), so by further deduction of possibilities, this would mean Mateu has to get the match in Manchester and Orsato in Chelsea, which would leave Hategan for Madrid.
This should be the only variant to appoint all four of them.
Orsato for CHE-ATL makes a lot of sense to me.
BAY-LAZ is not that exciting, so could also be a chance for a further KO stage debut (Kovacs?) instead of Oliver.
Mateu had some history with Guardiola IIRC and the pairing is not that open anymore. However it's also hard to find an alternative for this match.
If Hategan is not available for RMA-ATL, probably a referee from the first legs needs to be appointed again, e.g. Makkelie.

    1. My predictions:

      Manchester City - Borussia Mönchengladbach
      Sergei Karasev (RUS)

      Bayern München - Lazio
      István Kovács (ROU)

      Chelsea - Atlético Madrid
      Daniele Orsato (ITA)

      Real Madrid - Atalanta
      Danny Makkelie (NED)

    2. Chefren, since you predicted Kovacs over Hategan, do you know more about his absence from UEFA competitions following the Paris incident that happened 3 months ago? How long will be his absence?

    3. Are you insinuating that Oliver will never ever referee a Real Madrid or Juventus game anymore in his career? Surely !?

      Delete
    4. Real should be possible again for Oliver, but probably not against a Italian team. Juventus maybe in 2-3 years, but I assume now would be too early.
To be clear, I would not dislike, that he is appointed for them earlier, but I believe, that UEFA would avoid that for longer.

    5. Is there any official statement why Man. City - Mönchengladbach game is going to be played in Manchester, England? First game was in Budapest.

    6. Considering how unhappy the Italian press seemed to be with decisions over the last few weeks, putting Oliver on an Italian game, especially a Juve one, in the near future would not be a good idea

      Delete
    7. I would be absolutely shocked if Oliver didn't get a game next week in CL. The only match that makes sense is Real Madrid-Atalanta. I mean he could do Bayern Lazio but I think it's doubtful

    8. @Anonymous
I don't know anything that can be deemed as official, however beased on observation of his recent appointment as fourth official of Kovacs in Europa League, I would dare to say that there aren't problem for committee in appointing hiim, but the "problem" is Sovre, still under investigation (?) by UEFA. How long this will last I don't know, so it depends on that. I also think that UEFA could maybe suggest to committee to avoid the Romanian appointment as main referee at least for this KO stage, for opportunity questions. I know that this is very hard for Hategan... but... things seem to be only unclear. Maybe an appointment for him in Europa League with another assistant referee replacing Sovre? We will know soon. I have the feeling he would have already got a game in the middle in case of "freedom" in appointing him.
Regarding the reast of my predictions, I didn't know about Karasev and English teams, that's something new for me. However, there are only a few opportunity for this game between City and Gladbach, and in my opinion it doesn't require a "high" Elite referee, so surprises are possible. I selected Karasev to give at least a signal if committee has planned to see him at EURO. Another name is Sidiropoulos, but personally I really don't like him. For Real - Atalanta committee would never appoint Oliver, this is absolutely impossible. Given that Kuipers was sent to Turin after the controversial decision in the end of Porto - Juventus (that's my opinion, I can't find other arguments to see him in such game), the same could be for Real - Atalanta after the criticisms against Stieler, so Makkelie, another high ranked Elite referee, would be the logical choice by Rosetti, who seems to work in this direction in recent years, especially after complaints.
Then, Chelsea - Atlético, should be very likely Orsato, never appointed so far.
We will see tomorrow EL appointments and we will maybe have already some answers.

When Snoddy resigned, Clattenburg made a public statement saying that he was disappointed and that the resignation came to him as a surprise. I really find that hard to believe.

      Delete
    5. Well, it is not a referee committee of the RFU. It is an experts panel. If you (a club) would like to complain about this or that referee’s performance you apply to this panel. Today it consists of both Russian and foreign experts – Levnikov, Baskakov, Zuev (UEFA referee observers), Fursa (ex FIFA linesman), De Bleeckere, Stark, Kassai, Snoddy. Their opinion is kind of a final one. Besides Elleray acts as an advisor and gives his opinion on VAR performance.

A resistance to Article 14 (the laws on the control and ethics of behavior) of the United Football Union (UEFA) is not established.

Assistant Referee Octavian Sovre has not been banned, both have to take part in a training program on the subject by the summer.

  20. Possible penalty in Paris for PSG, foul on Icardi, missed by Taylor.
VAR could intervene for a missed incident.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Very good intervention by Attwell, correct decision to call Taylor for OFR. Penalty correctly given. That's how the technology should work!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I'm not sure it's a 100% penalty kick. I prefer a PK, but is a VAR intervention needed? And I don't understand why a yellow card was given. No SPA because the ball never came there... It was more like accidental contact.

      Delete
    2. Stamp is always reckless. That's why YC.

      Delete
  22. So far so good Marciniak.
3 correct bookings, 2 for SPA and 1 for penalty.

    ReplyDelete
  23. why Taylor give the yellow card ? I Think it was a careless foul , no force or reckless incident

    ReplyDelete
  24. Completely disagree with this OFR and the penalty awarded. This is nothing more than a coincidental contact, defender makes no extra movement towards attacker and there was no chance whatsoever that the attacker could have challenged for the ball.
The caution IMO is even more ridiculous... If this is considered reckless, then a lot of cautions should follow.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Foul is a foul, intention is not needed. Treading on someone's foot is so evident that you can't ignore it. YC is not ridiculous as stamp is always reckless in UEFA (and in 99,9% national federations).

      Delete
    2. Hm, like it or not but Attwell wouldn't have called Taylor for OFR if the penalty given by Kuipers in first leg wasn't deemed as fully correct by the committee.

      Delete
    3. For me this should not be considered a foul. It seems every contact, no matter intensity nor intent, is considered a foul nowadays in UEFA football. And making no differentiation between a truly reckless stamp and a totally unintentional touching the foot simply makes no sense for me.

      Delete
    4. It's a so-called dogmatic refereeing that makes easier both the job of referees and media reception (if explained well to 'experts' and 'fans'). It also helps in avoiding different, subjective judgments from referees themselves.

      Delete
    5. Yes, I understand your point of view and probably this is how UEFA instructed their refs but IMO the consequence of this totally unintentional event results in an out-of-proportion punishment. A situation in which there’s 0% chance to score a goal is promoted to an almost certain goal.
I wouldn’t have complained if the same unintentional trip happened when attacker was in possession of the ball and heading to the goal, or when there was some kind of extra movement by defender. But now... it just feels wrong.

      Delete
    6. Of course, I get what your point, too! I just tried to explain the mechanism behind the decision making.

      Delete
  25. Now correct no penalty and great YC for mobbing according to UEFA instructions. Great English refs so far!

    ReplyDelete
  26. One can discuss about these fully accidental contacts, you remember Kuipers whistled it on the pitch in his previous game, and in this case no doubts that VAR should support. But what if, and this happened today, referee misses the incident?
I think the strong argument for VAR intervention is the fact that Taylor didn't see it at all.
Then, in case, in front of monitor, Taylor could have decided for playing on, but this latter solution when there is VAR in action is somehow very difficul to see as final outcome.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Well, it seems not only spanish referees have trouble with additional time management... how much of the 3 mins was played? 1?

    ReplyDelete
  28. Penalty kick checks lasts longer than usual this week. I don't understand why.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. If it needs to be longer for correct decision I fully support that.

      Delete
    2. For complicated incidents (app, 2-3 incidents in a row, difficult offside/onside situations) i agree with you. But for checking goalkeeper's feet shouldn't take 1 min.

      Delete
    3. But maybe they discussed about PSG player who was closer than 9,15 meters to the ball.

      Delete
  29. Good first half from Taylor, especially the YC for De Jong.

Although the PSG player who cleared it for a corner at the penalty was encroaching - should it have been retaken.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. In theory, it should be indeed retaken, yes.
But I don't know UEFA instructions on that. Maybe they only want an intervention, if the player gained a real advantage?

      Delete
    2. Veratti was outside the area would be very difficult to penalise. We would be calling every penalty a retake if that is the margin now

      Delete
    3. offence by goalkeeper and/or kicker at the taking of a penalty kick or encroachment by an attacker or defender who becomes directly involved in play if the penalty kick rebounds from the goalpost, crossbar or goalkeeper.

I think this penalty kick should have been retaken with VAR intervention.

      Delete
    4. Well, Verratti did gain a real advantage as he clearly entered the circle before the penalty was taken, and after that cleared the ball.
I’m lost, punishing an unintentional and minimal stepping on the foot where no advantage was gained for the defending team with a penalty, but not enforcing the laws when a defender encroaches and really gains an advantage being able to clear the rebound of the penalty.

      Delete
  30. Correct 2nd penalty but I think that should have been Kurzawa's second yellow card for a reckless challenge. Apart from that, I really like Taylor's management style. He seems so relaxed and yet so in control.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Wasn't the foul for Barca's penalty reckless, i.e. worth a 2nd YC for Kurzawa?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. IMO, according to the line presented by Taylor in this game (YC at first penalty) it should have been given. But you know, UEFA wants 150% second yellow cards...

      Delete
  32. That was indeed quite stupid by the player to not remain silent - and he was wisely substituted soon afterwards.
But not a mandatory YC, I think.

    ReplyDelete
  33. It's an interesting psychological case.

Yesterday we saw Kuipers who forgave so many bookable offences that nobody listed every incident, focusing on the general image more - as Kuipers did.

Today we are watching a stricter approach and immediately potential (second) yellow card incidents are highlighted.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Yes indeed Anonymous you have a point. There can be always many missed yellow cards in a game but it only depends on referee's approach!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Not a huge fan of Turpin but he has been really good today, really good game management, not one YC.

  36. Good Taylor tonight, clever handling of the 1H, then a quiet 2H. Satisfying evening for English officials tonight.

  37. I really liked Taylor tonight. Very good feeling for the game. Key match incidents fully correct for me. Well done !

  38. Taylor have a good night well perfomance

    ReplyDelete
  39. Not much to report from Turpin's game. Maybe I am influenced by the UEFA documentary and him running around those cones, but he certainly has my envy with how nimble he is moving around the FoP, changing direction.

Lots of decisions to compute for the ARs, especially Nicolos Danos, and he got them all right - great job.

    ReplyDelete
  40. With the amount of appeals Taylor is (rightly) waving away, it makes me wonder if these players are just hoping for a foul or whether they actually get awarded free kicks for these incidents in domestic games!

    ReplyDelete
  41. I more often than not criticize referees but it was an absolute masterclass by Anthony Taylor tonight. In a much more difficult game IMO than the one in Torino yesterday he was absolutely faultless. Pure joy to watch. It reminded me why I decided to become a referee myself..

On a more negative note - this performance highlighted even more the comical and disgusting shaw of Bjorn Kuipers yesterday.

  42. Verratti encroached at the penalty kick missed by Messi and then played the ball. Did the VAR only check whether Navas had at least a foot on the line, but not Verratti's clear encroachment?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Not sure why VAR stayed away, but an intervention was mandatory here. Verratti clearly got involved by playing the ball after his encroachment, so there’s little to discuss. The check took long enough to recognize the encroachment.
