  1. Hategan with Kovacs’s AR1, Vasile Marinescu replacing Sovre. I don’t know if it is a good or a bad thing.

  2. Nijhuis, Van Boekel and Higler are tonight in Turin. They will travel to London Wednesday?

  3. Definitely not a good signal for Sovre, as I was guessing yesterday, I think he wont attend EURO...

    1. The fact that he was not given any suspension, when Coltescu was (albeit only a symbolic one), to be honest I think that signals that UEFA wants to keep Sovre available. Maybe not now, maybe not even in future CL matches, but perhaps for the EURO. I hope so, anyways. It would be a shame to see him miss out over this disaster.

  5. Two consecutive referees from Italy for the Young Boys. Rarely seen.

  6. Why Vincic unexpected? He is one of the best UEFA have at the moment.

  7. Octavian Şovre's international career is (surely) over. 1973-born, he isn't going to the EURO now, so his last international match was in Paris. At least he has an education programme to look forward to...

It seems UEFA's decision took the refs committee by surprise: Haţegan - Şovre, Gheorghe - Kovács team were in Saudi Arabia on Friday.

I actually can't believe that I'm reading the names Guida, Siebert - how were their R32 performances were IN ANY WAY a recommendation for higher tasks? It's good to know that anything 8,0 and above is a "good performance" in this UEFA era.

Deserved appointments for Vinčić and Soares Dias after convincing on different levels in their CL KO debuts, and glad that Oliver finally got a game.

    1. If the decision took the Ref Comm by surprise, doesn’t that mean Sovre still has a pretty good chance at the EURO? Perhaps this is just cautious management by UEFA, wanting to not put Sovre out in the Europa League a mere three days after this big headline comes out. I hope that’s the reasoning, anyways.

      Delete
    2. Yes that's a good point, maybe the committee did want to take him out of the media fire so soon after the announcement, on the premise he will return for Haţegan's next assignment.

I guess we can only wait-and-see if Şovre returns for the EURO, but personally I wouldn't bet on it.

      Delete
    3. If UEFA did not want Sovre at Euro, they would have given him the same suspension as Coltescu. The non-suspension means that Sovre will be eligible for appointments after he completes the education indicated by UEFA. Otherwise, there is no point for 1973-born AR to continue...

      Delete
    4. I guess it is easy to become too fixed in the present. In Vinčić's delicate moment, I thought it could be even all over for him, but he returned without problems on a high level.

With (poor) Colțescu having been put over the media parapet, I guess Şovre will be able to return in time without bigger issues. KSA appointment at least was a signal in that direction.

      Delete
    5. Exactly, if Vincic was back within few months, why not Sovre (although replacing an AR might be easier than finding another top referee)?

      6) RC, good decision by the ref

  9. About Hategan assignment, we can point out that a FIFA referee has been appointed as fourth official, and the same had happened with Kovacs in the middle for EL game with Hategan fourth a few weeks ago. So maybe UEFA asked Romanian federation for selecting only international officials in this role, after the incident in Paris.
We will see whether different names will appear in this role on next assignment for both Kovacs and Hategan.
Vincic in Manchester is a very good signal for him after his CL KO stage group, he showed a good performance, and committe liked it.
At moment he is absolutely in a good form, I don't know how much EURO can be a dream, if Skomina will be out (only in that case, it would be possible, in my opinion). But this should be known before.
Finally a game for Oliver and that's indeed already a success after the troubles, but it is clear that for UEFA Taylor comes before while Oliver must still wait for his chance at very high level.
The rest of appointments should be consequence of positive assessments by committe in previous games, it is very interesting that they didn't care at all about the troubles experienced by Siebert in Napoli - Granada, but, as I stated, important decisions were OK so indeed as Mikael wrote, this should be enough for UEFA.
Raczkowski is always liked by Rosetti, but without a real chance to advance.
I also have a question about Marciniak, no UEFA games, but regularly appointed in domestic league. This doesn't make sense, if he has health problems, he shouldn't officiate at all? What is the reason?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. About Marciniak, Today i saw v interview with him and he said that, he has had problem with health after covid infection , but now he is recovered and he will back and he said that he will be referee in elimination WC :)

      Delete
    2. But IDK, if he is health and he had good match in Greece, he should be back earlier maybe, next week

      Delete
    3. I think this is a sign that Oliver will have a CL game next week

      Delete
    4. IMO, Vincic should go to EURO independently from Skomina. There are not many alternatives at the moment, so that I think, that all referees, that have been used in CL R16 so far, will go to the EURO (if they don't mess it up hugely until then). That's 11 different referees until now - we can probably add Hategan, Oliver, Orsato and Mateu. Then there are three places (if it will be 18 in total again), maybe for Marciniak and Skomina, if they are fully recovered and maybe for Frappart.
Every other Elite referee has not done much to justify a promotion in the last two years, I think.

      Delete
    5. It will be difficult for UEFA to find 18 top referees (17 men plus Frappart), so two referees from some countries (eg Spain, Germany) will be needed. In this context, Vincic has his place on merit.

      Delete
    6. Vincic and Skomina definitely deserve Euro IMO

      Delete
  10. Nobody misses Marciniak, a bad season with one match, as for me, this season we will not see him in the cups anymore

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. My feeling is that these appointments were made before Marciniak fully recovered and got the "green light" to return. I believe that we will see him in FIFA/UEFA matches some time in March.

      Delete
    2. Calm down. Marciniak already told that he will be back (UEFA) in March.

    3. Are you blind or you cant read :) ?

  11. Agree with anonymous...Vincic is in a very good shape this season. I think he is fully expected and deserved.

  12. probably most agree that Szymon has his best years behind him, now he is a 1st category judge

    ReplyDelete

    1. First category? He is the best elite referee ever.

    2. Well, this is normal. There are a number of names in elite category are 1st category in my mind, such as Sidiropoulos and Karasev.

  13. I watched the Paris - Barcelona game this morning. Thoughts:

    KMIs

I thought the discussions on the blog yesterday were really excellent and I have little to add (both penalties, potential SYCs).

One can only assume that Attwell only checked the goalkeeper position at the saved penalty, which is actually a big / very hard to accept mistake.

    Managing the game

I agree with the consensus - Taylor was very good! We all know that the FA's lobby is very strong, so 2020 could be a stellar year for him in terms of international appointments if he carries on like this.

I want to speak a bit about this 'Taylor vs. Oliver' debate which comes up very often. I would really like to conduct a sociological study re. Michael Oliver, and why so many young people like him so much! It seems they identify with his personality and style somehow.

Taylor simply has a better feel for this 'helicopter overview' as was excellently described on TTT - he can stay in the background and knows when to step in with cards and presence.

Personally, I don't see the same skills in Oliver in his UEFA games (also in foul detection, leadership style), though he is a very clear first place in terms of PL matches.

That being said, I believe both will go to the EURO.

Balance: very good performance from Taylor, but the VMOs not recalling the second penalty is disappointing.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think that Taylor is certainly on course for CL Semi-final and can even be thrown into the mix for EL final. This of course depends on progression of English teams in both competitions. He is clearly trusted at the highest level.

In terms of Oliver and Taylor, I agree that Taylor's style certainly helps him in international games hence why he is given many important games. This is somewhat reversed in the PL, although both receive important games it is Oliver who would be considered the number one.

We cannot forget, however, that Taylor is 42 compared to Oliver who is just 36 still. Oliver could potentially still have more than a decade of refereeing. Assuming he continues at the level he is at in the PL, he has plenty of time to figure the best way to 'adapt' his own personal style when it comes to international refereeing. I think he can expect another year or two of 'good' but not 'excellent' appointments at international level but given the experience he already has and the time he still has left, I strongly believe he will reach the very top of international refereeing.

I think both Taylor and Oliver will be at Euros.

      Delete
    2. I don't get what UEFA and people on this blog see in Taylor, I watch a lot of his games in the EPL and I don't think he is very good at all Olivier by far should be number 1 in England then followed by Kavanagh

  19. Decent half from hategan. Correct yc for rangers, yc for Prague manager too. Czech side playacting a bit towards the end but he hasn't fallen for it.

    1. Hategan very much favoring the home team here

  20. Agree. After two deliberate fouls from behind by Milan players before, caution issued was timely - definitely more careless than reckless, but still late and a defendable call IMO.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Totally wrong assessed foul by Guida, so also wrong YC for Tagliafico
    Clean tackle on the ball

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Wrong YC indeed. It seems Guida's positioning is a bit off in the second half, he is quite far away from the ball most of the time.

  22. Borderline stamp of Aebischer. YC given by Guida. No VAR intervention is supportable.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Guida over-all does decent, 8.2 level so far, but I am not really happy with his style. Bit uninterested, bit unclear at times, and a couple of YC's were possible to interpret different. Over-all, dcent job.

  27. Good first half for Siebert on Olympiakos - Arsenal. The match is of normal/easy difficulty with 3 correct cautions. No problems with control and acceptance. Good foul detection.

    Positioning needs improvement.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. And 1 clear missed caution for an undeniable reckless stamp on foot in the early minutes.

      Delete
    2. Disagree here Edward. Stamp missed at 10' was really clear and in general I think Siebert was too passive (especially regarding (potential) SPA offences). His gestures and mimics were really not sophisticated (-> too aggressive) either.

His approach seems to be inflaming the match, not calming it down.

      Delete
    3. Yes, I would say the attacker impeded the goalkeeper there - missed that live, well-spotted!

Quiet 2H, good performance by the German ref.

On the whole, this was no resume to be promoted to Elite for Siebert in my eyes.

      Delete
    4. I would have liked to see Siebert in a match with crowd. Certainly that would have been a real test.

      Delete
    5. +1

I think he'll replace Aytekin in Elite regardless of performance, maybe even as early as the summer.

      Delete
    6. I believe that you are correct. Germany is a big refereeing nation and can support 4 Elite referees. I think that we have seen it before.

      Delete
    7. Germany currently have 4 Elite referees: Brych, Stieler, Zwayer and Aytekin. If no replacement, Siebert would be the 5th, unless Brych will retire after Euro.

      Delete
    8. It is quite likely that Brych will retire after EURO, so maybe nobody will have to be replaced.
So if you consider that and you add the current form of Aytekin and Zwayer, you could even dare to say that at moment the only "stable" German Elite referee is the new one, Stieler, and therefore it is absolutely logical to look for another one.
But, and I also agree with Mikael, so far definitely not convinced by Siebert. He needs a real development before such important step.

      Delete
    9. Maybe Brych will stay one more year, so Germany will have a good candidate for WC2022? If he will retire and Zwayer is not in his best form, who will be going from Germany?

      Delete
  28. I think this should have been OFR. Handball can be factual decision but in these 2 videos, handball is not clear. I think it’s better way for the referee watch it on monitor and decide.

    ReplyDelete
  29. No VAR intervention in London? Looked a quite clear penalty.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yesterday we were told a stamp on the foot is a stamp on the foot is a foul. Defender was late, didn’t play the ball and hit attacker’s foot. Penalty should have been awarded IMO.

      Delete
    2. Very clear penalty in my opinion. If Gozubuyuk saw it but he didn't want to whistle (and this can be only reason for NO INTERVENTION) it is referee's mistake, definitely. Impossible to support...

  30. Did anyone see Oliver?

    1. I saw. Fantastic foul detection, good personality and presence on the pitch. He had no controversial situations but it was a very good match also because well-helped by Stuart and Simon.

    2. I agree, not too difficult game, but he did a good job.

      Delete
  31. I have no explanation for NO VAR intervention in Tottenham - Dinamo Zagreb a few minutes ago. If OFR in Taylor's game yesterday was correct, well, this was more than obvious. Given that van Boekel is very experienced, I really don't understand what happened there.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think that the referee thought the reaction of the home team player was too much and that the contact was more from the side. He had a very good body language and was calm and convinced. However, it did seem like a clear foul and OFR material.

    2. Actually the referee was very far away from the incident, not anticipating towards the zone where the action could be expected.

    https://streamable.com/34he0k
Just to clarify my point of view, if VAR doesn't intervene in such situation in Italy, he is removed from his duties without doubts at the end of the season...
It would be very, very interesting to know the reason of this choice by van Boekel, according to what Gözübüyük saw and said to him.
It is the most obvious penalty ever seen, if you ask me.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I agree. The most clear penalty that you will see.

IMO, VAR intervention is mandatory here.

      Delete
    2. Agree that this should be a VAR intervention. "Most clear penalty you will see", "removed from his duties" just indicates that the people on this blog (Chefren, Mikael, Edward) have a very limited view of football. They have expertise on referees yes, but they lack the feeling for the match. That is why they are here and not on a football field.

      Delete
    3. I don’t understand why you think it’s necessary to personally disqualify these people with your last sentence. You can disagree of course and present arguments, but your conclusion seems rather poor and your tone arrogant. Why do you choose to discuss the people who present the opinion instead of the situation/decision?

    4. @Anonymous at 22:16

I can sympathize with you. It has been a difficult week for Dutch refereeing. Moreover I think it's clear that Gozubuyuk has lost his chances of promotion to the Elite.

Actually he was never Elite material IMO.

    5. Chefren, sorry for my late reply, one off the reasons why probably Pol van Boekel doesn't give easy penalty's is he is been a former professional football player himself, to be honest... i'm also a referee myself, and yes i'm Dutch, but to give a penalty for this feels cheap for me, personally i'm also not a person that gives easy/soft penalty's,,, you know in my vieuw a penalty is not something you should get like a present, but something you worked hard for and fully 150% deserved, i mean.... not tot easy, i think that's the reason why they don't give it

    6. IMO
it's a mandatory PK and OFR missed and I'm sure that Rosetti and Co. are (very) unhappy with it. However, I don't think it's one of the clearest I have ever seen, that's too harsh.

In addition, I think it's ridiculous to deem that clear stamp on foot as "soft PK".
And if you give penalties for how hard the attacker works for it, we are totally lost, I'm sorry. Referees have to apply the LotG appropriately and if there is such a foul, I give a penalty. It's just a dumb movement by the defender.
If that was the reason for them to not give that PK, it makes it even worse for me.

    7. Flip i think we have a clear different opinion in what is a very clear stamp for you, and what is a very clear stamp for me... this is not even a stamp for me....just a very light touch, yes there is a touch.... but realy need the player to fall over this??? i don't think so, that's also why i also after 10 times seeing this video, and after slowmotion would not give a penalty

      Delete
  38. Chefren? Are you serious? Did you have something against van Boekel / Gozubyuk? Most obvious? Of course this is not a penalty. This soft penalty’s destroyed football. Big compliment to continue

    1. What is the attacker supposed to do in this situation Referee1?

      Delete
    2. Yes I'm serious, nothing against van Boekel and Gözübüyük, focus on the incident. The defender tries to go for the ball but he clearly hits attacker. There isn't any anticipation of contact by attacker who is only trying to advance with ball. The contact with foot is more than clear, the full incident is in my opinion a full classic penalty sequence, I can't find arguments to say "not enough". This would be valid in case of movements by attacker as well, but actually he does nothing and he is clearly hit. Very sophisticad and in my opinion wrong to make an assessment like this, even more from referee's position, you see, he is very far. So, could he make such evaluation? Difficult to say, in a normal context this should have been OFR. In case of incident happened in a game with Italian team and with an important score, this would have been perceived as shocking and without explanation. That's my point of view.

    3. IMO very clear penalty. With VAR, this is unacceptable

    4. That's a super clear penalty. Stamp + tripping.

  39. But you still continue and continue. You gave your opinion and we respect it. But it is now for years that some “refs” are trying to kill here. First it was always Mazic, Kassai, Cakir. You give your opinion and that’s it. Why post many times about in my opinion soft penalty. Please be fair. This is a education blog. You say yes , I say no. Respect it, no hard feelings

    1. Honestly, It's quite distasteful how easy you can dish out such a huge accusation as a death threat and yet after just say "It was a misunderstanding", it's the easy escape. You have to bee 300% sure about it if you want to talk about it.

It reminds me a situation in France where former FIFA referee Tony Chapron was publicly accused of being racist by a player after being sent off, and when match officials gave the recording of their communication during the game, it was clear that this was a lie. Ironically this incident has not saved Chapron from being classified as racist by fans even with clear evidence of the contrary (!!!)

I hope (even if is quite delusional) a punishment will follow, because it's just unacceptable; social medias and co are a very powerful entity which is a front door to hatred, and players are well aware of that.

  49. Very good way of using the VAR system in La Liga’s match between Getafe and Atletico Madrid. Referee Sánchez Martínez incorrectly issues only a YC to Getafes Nyom after a studs on calf tackle. VAR after a swift check advises an OFR and Sánchez Martínez only needs a quick view on the monitor before deciding for a fully deserved RC to Nyom. All solved in only 1 minute and 49 seconds from foul to RC.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It was indeed a quick process, such SFP was ultra clear and decision has been adjusted quickly.

Later in the game, a penalty could've been awarded, but I think VAR was right to support Sanchez Martinez, no clear and obvious mistake IMO.

    2. And the other way around in the Real Madrid game. For example when Ramos clearly got pulled down with an arm lock. Nothing from VAR.

  50. Really strange scene in the Eredivisie today. The trainer of FC Groningen pulled/pushed a player of the opponent down. Referee Lindhout (UEFA 3rd category) gave a YC. Enough?

    2. If it was a throw-in for the navy blue team, then I agree it's a crystal clear RC, also by the LotG.

However, given the context (throw-in to greens, clear DtR play, match time, players reaction, not a punch or sth like that) - YC is a sensible choice.

In any case I'm sure KNVB and van Egmond will support the common-sensical position.

    3. I’m not that sure. Philipp S quoted the relevant passage in the LOTG, then I see no room for interpretation for Yellow Card here. It’s literally addressed in the Laws
