UEFA EURO 2020 - Referee predictions - Semifinals (I)

The first match of semifinal: predictions game about EURO 2020 referees.

You have to guess the exact referee and VAR for each game by filling in a form. Just insert your name, or, if you want, a nickname and then for each game just select the referee.  If you have already played for the previous rounds during group stage, please use the same name. We can't ensure too many efforts if you send predictions with a different name than the previously used one. If you are new and you want to have yout first try, you are welcome!

Send your predictions here:
TIME OVER

Due to a too short time before previous games and the release of new appointments we have decided to split Semifinals in two parts, this is the first one.  Results will be published all together.
The deadline for the first semifinal will be Sunday 4 July 2021, 09:59 AM CET. Unless extraordinary announcement by federations the same day a few time before the official releasement by UEFA, in that case of course we couldn't accept your names. So the suggestion is not to wait the very last minutes to avoid troubles. The predictions sent after that (official time will be checked) will not be accepted in any case.

Points will be assigned according to the following pattern:
10 points for having guessed the exact referee of a match
8 points for having guessed the exact VAR of a game
5 points if a guessed referee for a game will be appointed as fourth official
4 points for having guessed a VAR appointed in a game but he is appointed as AVAR1 or AVAR3 in the same game
3 points if a guessed referee is appointed in the other semifinal
2 points if a guessed VAR is appointed as main VAR in the other semifinal

  1. Good bye Daniele Orsato.
Hello Danny Makkelie & Cuneyt Çakır for SF !

  3. Cakir for the final. Makkelie one of the semifinals for sure. The other semifinal could be Kuipers (if he has enough time to recover for SF1) or maybe a surprise, Karasev, Rapalini, etc...

    1. Because of Ceferin, Cakır will get SF.
Kuipers final, very appreciate by Rosetti.
Karasev : why not but not convinced. Rapallini idem.
      Makkelie I think.

      Delete
    2. Do you think Rosetti admires and support Kuipers?

      Delete
    3. Yes.
And Kuipers between QF et SF can't recover enough.

      Delete
  4. Cakir had troubles in Italy - Spain 5 years ago, EURO 2016 in France.
Very discussed by Italian side. He would be the name at that point for Italy - Spain, but in my opinion Rosetti will avoid. There would be controversy even before the start. I hope to see Cakir in the other game. So we have surely Makkelie as candidate, he had that handball in the opener, very discussed by Italian side as well, but I don't find other names. Taylor again with Italy is difficult and very likely England will be in the other game. Impossible to see Brych fort eh third time in a row...
But well, if Italy - Spain will talk Dutch, then maybe the final will talk a different language... how many things :D
I'm really curious about this choice by committe.

    4. i agree with your analysis. But what do you think about Rosetti’s use of Hategan? It seems very strange to appoint a referee like Hategan as a fourth official twice: for a Round of 16 and a QF. Could it be a surprise name for a SF?

      Delete
  5. I prefer next option. Spain Italy for Kuipers, other semifinal I preferred Cakir. For the final, race between Rapallini and Makellie. I still can not believe that somebody thinks that remarkable career is prerequisite for final, not the merit on Championship.

    1. Hi Ref, Kuipers has a game tomorrow. According to your prediction he will have no rest days (travelling). That’s impossible and not good also. Besides this, doing a QF means normally no SF. Makkelie and Cakir will do the Semi’s and Kuipers the final.

    1. Well for me there’s a big difference: if it’s about refereeing one of the teams involved I agree with you. However, we are talking about exactly the same game, that makes it very different for me and I would try to avoid the appointment in that case.

    2. Makkelie will do Italy - Spain. He is a very good referee who rarely has problems in (difficult) matches. Players have a lot of respect for him and he receives great acceptance. He also makes few mistakes. The penalty situation in the opening game didn't cause him any trouble and the players were friendly to him throughout the game.

Cakir is also doing a strong European Championship so far. He is calm, friendly and receives respect, has control and acceptance from players. He hasn’t yet led England, Ukraine, Denmark and Czech Republic.

Makkelie has already led England and Kuipers will be doing Denmark and Czech Republic tomorrow. I don’t think two Dutch referees in a row will handle Denmark or Czech.

      Kuipers or Karasev the final.

    3. UEFA prepared the entire season for the Kuipers and Brych EURO 2020 Final. We can understand this situation from champions league matches.

  9. Do you believe that UEFA will appoint 2 Dutch referees for the remaining 3 matches (2SF/F)?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Never going to happen. However, everybody here seems to be sure kuipers is set for the final - but why? Only because uefa wants to reward him for a great career? Same would hold for Brych...

  11. Final: Kuipers (because is written in stars)
Semifinals: Cakir and Hategan (forced options)

    My arguments:
    - final was already awarded before tournament to Kuipers or Brych (it will be Kuipers)
    - Makkellie out because 2 referees from Holland in last 3 games is lack of common sense
    - Cerro Grande, Taylor and Oliver should be out because ESP and ENG will be in semifinals
    - Karasev missed a red card in last game, Rapallini missed a penalty in last game, Orsato is already at home

    1. Why not ? Hategan is a FIFA referee since 2008. During all these years he whistled:

      - 33 games in Champions League (group stage + KO stage)
      - 25 games in Europa League (groups stage + KO stage)
      - 2 games in EURO 2016
      - SF in olympic tournament (2016)
      - SF in WC U17 (2017)
      - QF in WC U20 (2015)
      - SF in EURO U21 (2013)
      - 3rd place final in FIFA Club World Cup (2019)

For a referee from Romania, a country without political influence, all these games are very good achievments. He is perfectly entitled to whistle a game like England- Denmark ...

P.S. btw, Hategan has more games in Champions League than Makellie (30), Karasev (24), Taylor (20), Cerro Grande (15) or Vincic (12) ...

      Delete
    2. I guess it’s not the number of Champions League matches handled which is important, but the quality of those appearances :)

      Delete
    3. u know petschovschi. UEFA has very few referees that it can trust every match. Hategan is not one of these referees.

      Delete
    4. Hategan is a very good referee and a quite valid option for SFs. Italy-Spain would suit him very well but with a Committee that assigned Brych, the referee with thw worst performance of the tournament, to UKR-ENG...expect the unthinkable. Rosetti has lost all credit, especially among referees.

      Delete
    5. Unkown, please give some valuable arguments. "UEFA has very few referees that it can trust every match. Hategan is not one of these referees.". This is not acceptable. By the way, Hategan is among the best refs nowadays. Excellent fitness and foul detection. Always keeps matches under control. Hategan deserves a SF game.

      Delete
  13. Sorry Ukraine!!

    ReplyDelete
  14. What did Hategan do so bad for not getting a KO match? And they left him in the tournament only to be a 4th ref? I would have left Kovacs or Ekberg for that...
If he did so many mistakes, why wasn't he sent home after the groups stage? Strange.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Italy - spain Sf is very big match, weneed an experienced and in-form referee. On paper the other SF will have less difficulty level. For ITA - SPA Kuipers and Brych is out because there is only 2 resting days between their QF matches and SF. Taylor will be out if aengland continues. Turpin already sent back to home. We have Makkeile and Cakir but ıtalians don’t want thrm. We have Rapallini, Hategan and Karasev. All three have some difficulties but there are no other referees available. I sm between Rapallini and Karasev but i had a feeling that going to be Hategan.

  17. What is the problem between Cakır and Ceferin?

    ReplyDelete
  18. I just can't see 2 Dutch officials in the middle of the remaining games.
Cakir one of the semis for sure
But for Italy/Spain - very tough, if England out then it's Taylor for me. If England get to the semi, it's really difficult choice, I would suggest Karasev as Hategan has been 4th (would find it strange at this stage to appoint him as referee).

    ReplyDelete
  19. Makkelie and Cakir can't be appointed for Italy. Makkelie missed a huge handball on ITA-TUR and his appointment for such a sonorous match (Italy-Spain) would be heavily criticised. Cakir has not refereed Italy since the famous Italy-Sweden, and it would be criticised as well as the referee of the historical elimination of Italy from WC2018.
    Therefore, my predictions are:
    Italy-Spain HATEGAN
    2nd SF CAKIR
Final TAYLOR (if Italy is out), KUIPERS (if Italy is in)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Of course, no Taylor if England is in final. Then it will be 100% to Kuipers.

  22. In my opoinion if the commitee wants to be fair should do the below appointments:
Spain Italy DANNY MAKKELIE WITH HIS TEAM.4th ifficial Karasev
2 SEMIFINAL: FELIX BRYCH with 4th official frappart
    FINAL: CAKIR
In my opinion 4th official of thenfinal should be rappalini as a award for his appearnces but in any chamce should get the final because ot is the Euro final.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Gianluca Rocchi is new italian referee appointer for Serie A and B replacing Rizzoli.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I don't see why Makkelie would get a SF? Made crucial mistakes in TUR-ITA and ENG-GER. Cakir SF2, Kuipers final and hopefully Rapallini for ITA-ESP.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Haha here is Bingo11 again, who always attacks Makkelie. So predictable! Perhaps you need to change your name :)

      Delete
    2. A handball on which opinions were very much divided, but more important, he was hardly able to see despite an expected position and a crucial mistake in ENG-GER you just made up?
And crucial mistakes seemingly so important for you, still you would appoint Rapallini for a SF, having needed no less than 3 OFR’s?
Kuipers for the final, despite an OFR for a situation in which he had a good viewing angle.
It becomes quite clear now you’re biased against Makkelie, your comment makes no sense and isn’t consistent in argumentation.

      Delete
    3. Rapallini is originally of Italian descent. Therefore, it cannot be given to the Italy match.

    4. Yesterday he was FO in Belgium-Italy

  29. After average performances Yesterday (Oliver with wrong RC and Vincic soft PK) for sure Rosetti will go for safe hands in QF’s. Therefore Makkelie and Cakir will get an appointment. Both are great managers with necessary feeling for the game. That’s all we need.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I mean SF’s of course.

      Delete
    2. Cakir should referee the final based on merit. Makkelie and Hategan in SFs.

      Delete
  30. I actually think that commitee has very limited possibilties for this particular tie.
I think that they go with Cakir and Makkelie in the SFs, but I'm really curious, who will get the ITAESP duel.
Cakir had the same duel 2016 and had serious problems, Makkelie had a crucial mistake (not totally his fault to be fair) in the opener.

I think that the commitee is more concerned about the opener of this tournament than about a match 5 years ago, so my predictions are:

    REF / VAR
ITA-ESP: Cüneyt CAKIR (TUR) / Massimiliano IRRATI (ITA)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Irrati VAR when Italy plays?

      Delete
    2. I agree with Cakir as main referee, but I doubt Irrati will be kept as VAR though :)
German VMOs will be the optimal choice IMO.

      Delete
    3. What a silly mistake :D
      VAR: Bastian DANKERT (GER)

@Prediction Admins: Can someone change my guess to Dankert please?

      Delete
    4. There should be a rule in prediction game: - 3 points if predicted referee is from the nations that play :D

      Delete
    5. And again everybody is speculating and criticising referees. In the end most will be wrong because nobody learns from previous appointments and policy.

      SF: Makkelie and Cakir
      F: Kuipers

Whether you like it or not, the best three refs are in the last three finals.

Let’s stop the biases and wait for the UEFA released.

Are you aware that there is a prediction game? :D Look above if you were not, this post is dedicated to it.

    7. What's the issue with two Dutch refs in the last three games? It doesn't bother me at all since both have been great. What actually tarnishes Rosetti's job is Brych's appointment for UKR-ENG. He should be sent immediately packing after BEL-POR.

      Delete
  31. I belive

    Makkelie Italy vs Spain
    Cakir Second semi final

And then the final will depend on which team from England side of the draw gets to the final.

If England or Ukraine do its Kuipers if Denmark or Czech its Brych

    ReplyDelete
  32. The Argentinian is out of the question. He needed VAR for the penalty in France-Switzerland. He didn't even blow for a foul, although he was right there.
Del Cerro for the non-Spanish sf. Spanish referees got the nice games in the group stage. Look at the games he and Lahoz had. Would be strange to have neither of them in the knock-out stage.
Cakir, Brych (already has four games), Kuipers or Hategan for the other two games.
Hategan is a good referee, but I don't think he stands a chance. He was at the PSG - Basaksehir match, where his squad was falsely accused of racism. UEFA did not have the courage to continue with the same refs the next day, and replaced him with Makkelie. If it would have not been a team from an influential country, they would have lost 3-0 and be banned from competitions for several years.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Cakir for Italy vs. Spain;

Rapallini for England/Ukraine vs. Danmark/Czech Rep.

    Makkelie for the final!

    ReplyDelete
  34. ITA-SPA Taylor
    CZE/DEN - UKR/ENG Makkelie

    Final Çakir

    ReplyDelete
  35. So it's Cakir and Hategan or Makkelie
in semifinals and Kuipers on final.

    ReplyDelete
  36. What do you think about Rosetti’s use of Hategan? It seems very strange to appoint a referee like Hategan as a fourth official twice for a Round of 16 and a QF. Could it be a surprise name for a SF?
