  1. Very particular remark: second appointment in Portugal in the same competition for Sánchez Martínez, after his promotion to Elite.
Braga - Sheriff and then now Porto - Lyon. This is by far a better assignment than the previous one, but in all cases he will have a very short trip!
About Guida, still the only Category 1 appointed so far, I start to think that there is something wrong with Massa, as Chiagozie stated some weeks ago. Strange that he is out from appointments.

    1. Overall two normal appointments, I think.
With the promotion to Elite, it has to be expected that one can handle also bigger EL KO matches, so I am fine with Sanchez (and not a bigger name) in Porto.
And it's not too surprising that Guida is at top of the First group, given his previous CL matches. Maybe he would have been promoted, if there had not been another Italian.
I expect some more First group referees in this round, but we will see.

    2. I get the feeling that UEFA forgot which Italian redrew they promoted as Elite😂😂😂 because it is really Really strange That only one Category 1 ref is used in such way and it happens to be an Italian. Not a conspiracy theory that it’s Rossetti doing his thing but at least more Category 1 refs should be involved. I bet Guida will be promoted next but is already being treated like how Seibert was treated.

    3. Tss its Rosetti ruining UEFA again. Italy should get the treatment France got after Lannoy retired. Instead they overuse mediocre Italian refs like Guida and Massa whose appointments are maybe based on the performances but im sorry to say it. I think they get the appointment because they are Italian only. Refs like Visser and Scharer should get a chance too but they dont cause they are not from the countries with great influence like italy or NL... It really should stop, before we can only laugh at the designations from mr. Rosetti. Its not good for the refs involved as well. Im afraid players also Will know why refs get their matches and it damages the respect the refs Will get.

    4. How can you compare Guida (40yo, 11 years in Serie A, dozens of very big matches officiated in stadiums with 80k spectators) with Scharer or Visser? There is a huge gap in experience between the two despite the talent

  2. @ Turkish ref: do you have a crystal ball? :)

  3. Zwayer back! For me a surprise

  4. I don't think Bastien deserved such a match, frankly I was waiting for marciniak or orsato for that match, well deserved matches for scharer and Jovanovic

    1. 7th club game for Bastien this season and his third with Turkish teams (also third with Spanish teams). In addition he was the referee for Turkey-Montenegro 1st September 2021. I think this can be avoided...

    2. Why would you want such high profile ref for this Tie?? This is one of the easiest or most straight forward tie that even a category 1 ref is even expected…. This is just Man City vs Sporting Lisbon all over again in The Europa league with all due respect, there is nothing huge about the tie.

      Delete
    3. I agree with Chiagozie, even a Category 1 referee wouldn't have been a surprise. Too much difference between both teams.
Maybe more interesting the second legs, to be played in Turkey, but this was is definitely OK for a lower Elite like Bastien.

    4. Strange decision happened and following referees will not have a game for the remaining 10 games at Turkish Super League:
Cüneyt Çakır, Ali Palabıyık, Aldulkadir Bitigen, Fırat Aydınus, Bahattin Şimşek, Burak Şeker, Suat Arslanboğa, Hüseyin Göçek, Mert Güzenge, Tugay Kaan Numanoğlu, Alper Ulusoy, Halis Özkahya
With this decision Cuneyt Cakir and Ali Palabiyik will not have a European game.
Also no WC for Cuneyt Cakir.

    5. Very strange, here the news on TFF site:
      https://tff.org/default.aspx?pageID=248&ftxtID=37176
      Do you know more, Ugur?
It is reported as a renovation of Super League referee's panel.

    6. I have no clue, but news said common and mutual decision made by Committee and clubs. So wierd.
Also they left 12 referee observer for 10 games each week.
I didn't understand the decision at all.
For Cuneyt Cakir only option UEFA said we won't give him any games for the remainder of the season, FIFA said no WC, so Cuneyt Cakir will move to Saudia with immediate effect...

      Delete
    7. Scandalous decision. Since the new Central Arbitration Board took office, Turkish refereeing has been going through its worst days. Despite the good performance of most of the referees above, such a treatment is unacceptable.

      Delete
    8. There is not much information on this subject, but after a position in the Fenerbahçe-Trabzonspor match played at the weekend, a spectator wanted to attack the referee by entering the field and this was blocked by Fenerbahçe football players at the last moment, I wonder if MHK wants to show how the league will go without good referees, believe me. Most of what happens in our country is meaningless.

      Delete
    9. I would speculate, before knowing maybe more about, that something was already happening in past months. At first the treatment of Cakir, then the try with Palabıyık and now the quick path of Umut Meler for UEFA. Everything according to this "new list".... but I'm really sorry that maybe the biggest Turkish referee ever has to leave his league in this way!

      Delete
    10. Chefren - it is a joke.
As Turkish Ref said it is meaningless.

  5. Extremely big match for Bastien. Congratulation

  6. Why didn't Croatia got anyone other than Svilokos controlling the Sevilla match? I think Jovic is done for the season, in all aspects, including youth, after that mistake at Basel - Qarabag match.

  7. Still we have all Elite referees in EL unless Guida and that's very strange. Something surely happened with Massa.
Zwayer back in a quite good game after his domestic troubles, while Jovanović with a definitely more challenging test than the first one in CL. However, I think that it will be not so challenging, the Italian team seems definitely better.
Gözübüyük in Scotland: the Dutch will have to change his style for this game, I think he can't use his approach, with both teams playing a quite rough football.
Among the missing Elite, if we exclude Kulbakov for known reasons, we have Sidiropoulos, Soares Dias, Massa, Collum and Kružliak, if I'm not wrong. Difficult to see them directly in CL, some of them are expected on next week either on EL or ECL.

  8. Good appointment for Zwayer :)

  9. Difficult match for Guida so far. The players complain a lot about his decisions, which however seem mostly OK to me. Also some conflicts between players. So a challenge to keep control, which he attempts with a lot of talking (his favourite word seems to be "piano"...).

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I watched the first half and I agree with your analysis, I think still OK performance, players are very difficult to control but no real problems so far.
Some points for discussion: the foul whistled against Real Betis leading to protest and YC could have been easily Play on (but it happened in the midfield, no promising attack), then OK to play on before first goal by German team. Never VAR stuff, in case the foul should have whistled by himself.
About the rest, as you said, many talks with players, let's see now second half.

  10. Critical mistakes from Sanchez Martinez and her team, 1 goal canceled without VAR and wrong penalty, the match was a bit heavy for Sanchez Martinez.

    1. Two VAR interventions in a short period:
      1) Goal allowed for Lyon by VAR, that was decided as offside by the AR
      2) Handball penalty for Porto first given by Sanchez, then taken back after OFR. Ball touched hand, but came from the defender's body.

      Delete
    2. Penalty lasted 3 minutes, not so fast

      Delete
    3. One more VAR intervention in the last minute
      3) Goal disallowed for Porto by VAR because of offside

      Delete
    4. 3 wrong decisions and VAR fix, big bad luck for martinez

      Delete
    5. The most interesting situation, handball penalty annulled: https://streamgg.com/v/k34ccgcv

      Delete
    6. Rewatching it, I must say that it is not clear why VAR intervened to me. Ball coming from defender's body, if not after deliberate play by the same player, shouldn't be enough for an intervention, even more with arm in that position.
I would find a correct intervention if no touch by arm at all.
This would be reasonable, the rest, I don't understand.

      Delete
    7. Ball was played by a teammate. No elements to punish a handball.

      Delete
    8. Great comment, I forgot this criterion that indeed it is used also in Italy, this should be reason.

      Delete
    9. But according to the LotG, it's a clear penalty, because the body was made unnaturally bigger. The position of the arm can not be justified by the body movement. And everything else is not relevant there according to the text.

If there are instructions regarding the ball coming from the defender's body or coming from a teammate, they contradict the LotG - and that his highly problematic, I think.
You could use these indicators to determine, whether it was deliberate. But who needs deliberate, if you have an unnatural body position...?

      Delete
  11. Completely disastrous display by Sánchez Martínez today. Certainly the last international game of the season for the same and most likely the loss of Elite status.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Where is Soares Dias this season? Didn't he have a good season last year? Is he injured?

    ReplyDelete
  13. Looks good, but I have some remarks:
I think, Cakir is ranked too high. Maybe rather a B+.
I don't think, Letexier is ahead of Gözübüyük and Schärer, all three should be in the same category, either B+ or B.
I would swap Collum and Bastien.
Gil Manzano is missing, I would put him in A-.

    ReplyDelete
  14. No, I don't think he will be promoted, they should have done that before, and I agree with you, I said that many times on the blog, in my opinion this is indeed the maximum he can reach and it is OK. To be checked whether Massa will show better performances than him.

    ReplyDelete
  15. At moment Guida is better than some elite in my opinion. I’m not his fan but we have to say that he deserves élite category

    ReplyDelete
  16. Chefren, any tought about what happened to Soares Dias? Euro 2020, Olympic Games (4R in the Final) and now we don't see him? Do you think it's a candidate for UECL or even UEL final?

    1. The situation for the Portuguese is surely very difficult to read. Until a few time ago we were reading his name for a top clash like Real Madrid - PSG, at that time I thought he was about to become a very big name within the Elite category. Then, after that, I must say that there was a radical change in terms of consideration by committee, after some controversial performance. I think that in recent times he paid the extremely poor performance Lokomotiv Moskva - Lazio, in Europa League group stage (Novemeer 2021). Three crucial mistakes and in my opinion one of them very difficult to accept for an Elite referee. He has never shown, differently from other referees, but let's remember that this is only my opinion, to be steady after having reached a certain trust and reputation by committee, so I can understand why at moment maybe he is still under a strict observation. Having said that, I think that a CL appointment for him, as Philipp also wrote, would be still possible, in case I see only Lille - Chelsea, but I have strong doubts. He will rather start from Europa League, we will see.
I also think that it will be very difficult to see him at WC, if not already out...

    2. Thanks for the answer. I'm gonna be with him in a few hours. I'm gonna try to give hope to him

  17. Group A+ should have maximum 5 names. Rest of them goes to A.

    ReplyDelete
  18. @icedteatower: I think you could even divide the A+ poule.

    - Orsato, Taylor and Makkelie have IMO something in common: they do not fail under the biggest pressure. They seem to rise above themselves in the biggest games. For this reason, they are most trusted and therefore appointed to the biggest games on paper.

    - Marciniak can join them if he keeps showing great performances after his recovery.
    - Vincic and Siebert: we first need to see both of them in a high-profile knock-out game.
    - Turpin and Karasev: used to have troubles in high profile games or when players have bad behaviours. Karasev recently in the Nations league, Turpin at the Euro, Porto-Atletico. Are they resistant to high pressure? That's the question. I hope to see Turpin in a very challenging QF.

  22. Penalty in Glasgow after OFR by Gozubuyuk, to be honest I'm absolutely in trouble here. Defender left his leg in a "dangerous" position, but all was made by attacker there, gaining the contact, for the nature of the action, impossible to think for me that it was clear and obvious mistake.

    1. Agree. Also I think that Rangers GK was in front of the line with both legs when saved penalty.

      Link of penalty.
Agree with Cheefren, im not even convinced for a penalty here even less for an OFR.

      Delete
    3. There is a slight leg movement of defending player, towards attackers line of movement, just before the contact happened. For me it's PK, also on Serbian TV, referee analyst agrees with intervention and final decision.

      Delete
    4. Penalty IMO, good decision

      Delete
    5. Kent has no interest in the ball and just leaves the ball behind him to get contact. no PK for me.

      Delete
    6. Ball bounces of his foot, that’s something else than leaving it behind. Kent doesn’t change direction, keeps his track but is simply tripped by the defender who leaves his leg out. IMO it’s as simple as it looks clumsy, correct penalty and OFR.

  23. 2 correct offside decisions by AR1 confirmed by var in Glasgow.
Personally not convinced an ofr was necessary for the penalty. Quite soft

    ReplyDelete
  24. Lahoz is definetely in A+ category.

IMO with hom are there Orsato, Makkelie, Taylor and Cakir when they let him to handle the match.

    2. Philipp, Red Star - Rangers does not require such a high-rated referee. After 3-0 in the first leg, it is pretty clear, more or less. It could go to a B or B- referee from the lists above.

      Delete
    3. The appointments are normally done before the 1st leg.
And without knowing the result, such a match in Belgrade does require a high-level referee, I think.

      Delete
    4. True, the appointments are made in advance, but I don't consider this a high profile game. From the 7 games, I see this one as the 2nd "worse" after Monaco-Braga. We'll see.

    5. My guesses
      Ajax-Benfica-S.Marciniak
      M.United-Atl.Madrid-D.Orsato
      Juventus-Villarreal-A.Taylor
      Lille-Chelsea-Dello Cello Grande
      Leverkusen-Atalanta-O.Hategan
      Galatasaray-Barcelona-M.Oliver
      Red Star-Rangers-D.Aytekin
      Monaco-Braga-Davide Massa
      Frankfurt-R.Betis-I.Kovacs
      Lyon-Porto-F.Zwayer
      Westham-Sevilla-C.Turpin

  26. Atalanta - Bayer Levercusen
    3:2 (2:1)

What a match in Italy. It was a pleasure to watch. Good, hard, fast and clear football by both teams, especially in the 1st half. Very good turnover by Italian team.
Every referee would like to be a part of the match like this.

Serbian referee team did great job tonight. Jovanović apsolutely recognized caracter of the match. He found good criteria. Both teams accepted his criteria, so that resulted very well fot the game. His criteria made this game better.
Full control and good management. Jovanovic was very confident and calm. Three times he gave very good advantages (54',77'87').
Verbal warnings at the right moment.
    Assistants were on high level.
Very good onside by AR1 at the 1st goal by Italian team.
Good onside decisions by assistans Stojković and Mihajlović:
    23',39'44',57',62'67'90'
Overall, Jovanović and his team made one step forward.

    1. I was live at the stadium and had same feeling. I was a very poor amateur ref and atalanta fan and we really had many top referees this year in Europe who always give you the feeling they handle the game easily and let players play. Unfortunately this is not the same feelings we are having in Italian Serie A where referees are clearly doing everything (and more...) to push up the big names and take any decision (even clear) against us

  28. If we consider that the QF's CL and WC play-offs are both 8 games in total, who do we expect to be in charge?

    In random order:
    -1. Orsato
    -2. Makkelie
    -3. Taylor
    -4. Turpin
    -5. Marciniak
    -6. Vincic
    -7. Siebert
    -8. Lahoz / Gil Manzano*
    - Honorable mention: Karasev
    - Outsiders: Hategan / Kovacs / Jovanovic

    * Lahoz might be better, however I expected Gil Manzano to get a chance in the QF's CL because of his good performances and the age of Lahoz / DCG.

    1. IMO, Hategan is more than an outsider.
I would also add Oliver at least in the outsider list.
And I could also imagine two Spanish referees in the CL QF, if the pairings allow it.
Finally, not every top referee needs to get a CL QF. Some could also directly get a SF (or the final).

      Delete
    2. Yes agree Philipp. Some will go straight into the Semi final CL.

Hategan - I think it depends on how committee rated his Atletico - Man Utd game
Oliver - Yes, good suggestion for QF CL. Not sure about the play-offs

      Delete
    3. Taylor and Siebert enough bad. Kovacs, very well.

      Delete
    4. I think that a lot of people here underestimate Ovidiu Hategan. I am shocked that you consider him an outsider. I saw the lists above and honestly O think he is at the same level with Siebert, Vincic, Marciniak or Karasev. He has a lot of experience, how many of you remember the year he joined the Elite? He is also on top at the number of International games from the active referees.
Unfortunately, Hategan was very unlucky and exactly when he was on top form and about to make it to the next level, something happened and he came in the media spotlight. This things were both independent from him (Paris) or because of him (Belfast). I hope that this will not happen again and he will go in Qatar and also he will have an European final before he retires, because he really deserve this. There is enough time left to achieve these, good luck!

    5. You must be responsible for your assistant referees, as leader of the trio. Hategan might have worked better for himself, he didn't do that, he rather allowed things to happen. He was very unlucky, yes, absolutely, but also missing in something.

      Delete
    6. Indeed, Hategan has been refereeing UEFA matches for a long time, but, if I recall correctly, he never reached higher than R16 or QF in Champions League. Kovacs is 4 years younger and progressed significantly in the last year.

    7. Best reached by him is UCL QF. And 2 UEL semis.

    8. However most of the mentioned top 8 havent't done a CL SF yet. Only Makkelie, Mateu and Orsato have that experience.

    2. Chefren, do you think Orsato in the Europa League?

      Delete
    3. I think he can be saved for a CL quarterfinal, I don't know whether there is a real need to give him an EL game before.

      Delete
    4. So Marciniak has a Friday game (thanks ESR for posting Domestic appointments :)).

Agree that we can expect him on Tuesday...

    5. But Listkiewicz has a game on Sunday, so either nothing or Wednesday/Thursday game for Polish crew.

    2. Very sad for Cakir and his team. They didn't deserve this at all.

    3. Cakir has one of the most brutal career ending that I ever saw. Very sad.

  31. Kovacs has a game today in Romania, maybe this domestic appointment can suggest us that the game for him in CL is on Tuesday.
In case, AFC Ajax (NED) - SL Benfica (POR) is very likely for the Romanian.

    1. It could be, the only thing that is slightly surprising me is that he has one different AR. Usually, in the last domestic appointment before European competitions, Hațegan and Kovacs have their usual ARs, maybe today is an exception.

First decision was a YC by the ref Manuel Oliveira but the VAR (André Narciso) called for an OFR, then decision changed to RC. Toughts?

  34. According to Turkish media, the match to which Cüneyt Çakır was assigned, was Juventus-Villarreal. I didn't expect him to be assigned to an Italian team game but it was a really good appointment but right now...

    1. To be honest, you can be 100% sure that this was impossible.
After Milan - Atlético Rosetti would have never made such choice.

    2. Cakir was assigned to the match on Wednesday (March 16). UEFA took it back. The Turkish Central Referee Committee is preparing to delete a few more referees from the list. The former President resigned because he did not carry out this operation. New operations will continue here. The names are also known.

  35. I hope Cakir gets a great farewell

  36. Madden seems unlikely after only getting Conference League in GS.
Collum however as Elite referee should get at least one further match. Could be EL or ECL for him.
I think, similar to the other referees, you mentioned, Collum didn't manage to fully convince UEFA over the long time of getting CL and EL matches. So he didn't achieve the last step to the very top. And then at some point, younger referees come and get their chances, which leaves less space for the experienced ones.

  37. What do you think about this situation occurred in serie B?
    https://streamable.com/xyuuex
    OFR and penalty.
Very difficult case, in my opinion: VAR took more than 1 minute and then he called referee.
Only last replay is clear: it isn't a step on foot, but rather the defender puts the foot on ground and then he hits the attacker with his body in a maybe reckless manner.
I have small doubts about VAR, basically a penalty that you must whistle on the pitch, but what about OFR? Enough?

    Replies
    1. Thanks! Defending player is a little bit late and, as a result, his action is unsuccesful. The attacking player manages to play the ball and then quite strong contact occurs caused. I see it as a clear careless kick and intervention required.

      Delete
  38. anyone seen the ridiculous VAR intervention in Atletico-Cadiz yesterday?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Checked it now. Indeed the VAR intervention seems wrong, as the RC for the two-footed challenge is not wrong. I don't think, it's a clear RC, because ball is played and the contact is only at the foot, but not a clear error to give Red.
I also don't think, that the RC given near the end of the game was a clearer sending-off. Also there are arguments for both colours.

      Delete
    2. IMO the first RC is completely correct, second RC is too soft I think. I really don't understand this VAR intervention, he doesn't play the ball.

      Delete
    3. First RC is supportable for me; this should never be VAR stuff. Second RC is rather harsh for me; especially if you consider the (imo wrong) VAR intervention for the first RC.

      Delete
    4. Absolutely wrong intervention for removing the RC! I really don't understand VAR in this case, we have two-foot tackle and an excessive force as well. Impossible to say that RC is clear and obvious mistake.
About the RC issued later in second half, if VAR had acted like first half, he would have removed this one, but paradoxically this looked to be less blatant, if you ask me.
Poor work from Gonzalez Gonzalez in VAR room.

      Delete
    5. IMO, absolutely wrong by removing the 1st RC. 100% RC following a tackle with very high intensity and the contact at the bottom of the shin.
      2nd RC should be annuled.
      Very poor VAR performance !!

    6. Look to me this ref wanted to give a Red at all cost.

  40. Internationally he already did, but I think - and may hope - that Attwell disqualified himself as VAR in England too today. Crystal clear RC for Brighton's goalkeeper missed.

    ReplyDelete
  41. In my opinion clear RC to be issued to keeper after the goal scored, SFP missed by Attwell in Brighton & Hove Albion - Liverpool.

    1. Most weird thing is: I have the feeling that Attwell would have called Dean when it wasn't a goal.

      Delete
    2. That's not weird, but normal, if the VAR thinks, it's a clear foul/penalty, but not a clear RC.
BTW, it's a bit easy to only blame Attwell. Dean not even giving a YC, although he has a clear view, is also a big mistake.

      Delete
    3. I get your point but this is a clear red

      Delete
    4. Clear RC and once again Attwell is involved... I don't want to be too harsh but this isn't the first time he has completely messed up as VAR. Also Philipp is totally correct in saying that Dean needs to be blamed as well. How he didn't even give a YC is mind-boggling.

    5. Cristal clear red card !

  42. I think that the bigger problem with him domestically is that almost all of his idiotic decisions are directed against Liverpool.
