  1. The biggest game goes to Munuera Montero, indeed. Polish teams never won against Qarabağ FK. It's a nightmare club for us. Now, KKS Lech Poznań, that celebrates the 100th anniversary, won the league after seven seasons of waiting. Their coach was Maciej Skorża who also won the previous title with Lech in the 2014/15 season. Unfortunately, he quit after the season due to personal reasons and the Dutchman John van den Brom will make his official debut in the first leg. There is already a big tension among Lech's and neutral fans that support Polish clubs in UEFA competitions before this game. Milorad Mažić will observe the Spaniard, another sign of the game's importance.

  2. At what stage, if any at all will VAR be introduced in the Champions league/Europa League qualifying and play offs?

    1. I think, like in previous years, UCL Play-off Round and UEL Group Stage.

  3. Best games for Dankert, Montero, Maresca and Coote

  4. FIFA referees Kai Erik Steen and Sigurd Kringstad without games for a long while in Norway. Is there another conflict here? Steen is the chairman of the referee's association and has been critical in the press of some decisions made by management. He also seems surpassed by Saggi as no 2 behind Eskas.

    1. Kringstad recently refereed u17MT in Scotland with Hamer observing him

      Delete
    2. Kringstad was in Scotland, yes, but that was in March. He is now injured.

Rumour is that there is a disagreement with the federation involving Steen and his AR1 Grønevik (a good friend of his), who both are inactive since end of May. Grønevik however refereed one cup game where the local association appoints the ARs last week, so he's not injured.

Steen has been out of form and in the last game in May (Rosenborg-Haugesund) he awarded a completely wrong penalty for a tackle 120% on the ball only (https://tv.vg.no/video/238881/legger-seg-flat-etter-dette)

The game before this (Viking-Jerv), he awarded a dubious red card after a consultation with Grønevik - and it proceeded with a violent confrontation between the sent off player and Grønevik (https://tv.vg.no/video/238280/raser-mot-linjedommer-etter-roedt-kort-oi-oi-oi)

There has been something, likely outside the pitch, that seems to affect the motivation and self-confidence of these two referees.

As chairman of the referee's association, before the season, he sent a strong letter to the federation denouncing that gameday in the 2nd division had been changed from Sunday to Monday, because all the referees at this level are amateurs. That resulted in a public discussion between Steen and the competition manager of the federation in the press.

Steen is an outspoken person, very humble when making mistakes, but has on occasions come under fire because teams and players found him aggressive and disrespectful because of his choice of words.

So I fear something has been said which has not gone down well....

    3. Interesting. Not good decisions and not good management in the situations in clips. It’s not on purely sporting reasons (suspension) that these two are absent?

    4. Don't think there is any conflict with Steen. Just no match for this round. Don't really think there has been any conflicts with the norwegian referees, since Svein Erik Edvartsen. No norwegian referees wanted to referee with him because of bullying and disloyalty (https://www.nrk.no/sport/dommerkolleger-nekter-a-domme-med-edvartsen-1.13491841). Since that he has lost his normal job, referee job and wife, and all he does now is criticizing the referees on twitter and suing the FA every year with no luck...

    5. Both Steen and Grønevik have no matches since Round 8 (games until Round 13 have been appointed).

  5. Is it worth to mention that Dankert has Swiss ARs? Is he usually working with them? It has been a while since I saw him on the pitch but I guess that this is not common. I know him only as a "specialised" VAR.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. No, not common at all and I haven't found a good explanation yet.
Maybe a Swiss referee (Schnyder?) has been replaced there and as there are four Swiss referee teams in ECL in the same week, they chose to replace him with a German?
However, it should have been early enough to switch the whole team.
Dankert's last international game was in ECL qualification 2nd round last season.

    2. In Conference League we have: 18:00 CET - Kuopio (Väre Areena)
KuPS Kuopio (FIN) - SK Dila Gori (GEO)
Referee: Luca Cibelli (SUI, 2nd Cat)
Assistant Referee 1: Vital Jobin (SUI)
Assistant Referee 2: Bastien Lengacher (SUI)
Fourth Official: Hakim Ben El Hadj Salem (FRA)
Still involving Swiss officials, so I guess it should be something related to Swtizerland, indeed.

    1. Excellent decision, extremely blatant behavior by player with that gesture, in this case impossible to avoid a card. I would also add that not all referees book players for this reason, unfortunately...

    2. Good alertness and due to that the only correct decision. Well done.

    3. @Euro Soccer Ref How was Munuera Montero in LPO-QAR?

      Delete
    4. No big mistakes but some smaller ones that irritated players. Missed three mandatory yellow cards (21' - reckless tackle, 53' - simulation, 85' - step on foot). All topped off by an arrogant attitude -> yeah, he clearly showed who is the boss and that he is happy to issue cards if someone make problems, but it's not how you earn respect on the pitch. My mark would be 8.1.

      Delete
    5. Thanks.

Tbh arrogance on the pitch (not always but) without the charisma/natural authority/technical accuracy to 'afford' it sounds like peak Munuera Montero for me.

      Delete
    6. Excellent decision by Dumitru Muntean (MDA) in giving a caution, and subsequent sending off, for excessive goal celebration. Ingason was blantant in his behavior and was acting in an inflammatory way toward the Malmo supporters. Wishing more referees would book players for this during goal celebrations.

    7. I must add, a very good performance by the Moldovan referee in a challenging game. Authoritative display especially in a first half with a LOT of fouls where he easily could have lost control.

    Tomasz Susial (Poland)

    Weather Condition :

The match was played in Iceland, very windy and artificial pitch.

    Match Description :

Normal game for referee team. Referee was not ready and focus in this game. Even the result is very clear the performance of the referee was not enough for the opening of the season.

    Yellow Cards : 6

min 2 (?) no broadcast (LEV)
    min 42 (+) reckless (LEV)
min 61 (-) shown by protesting but it wasn’t. Should feel the spirit of the game (LEV)

    Red Cards : 0

    Missed Red Cards : 1

min 62 (-) off the ball offence for elbowing. Yellow card was given (LEV)

    Penalties : 1

min 5 (-) penalty given (LEV) for handball but I do not see any punishable offence while the defender on the ground. Attacker also committed foul on defender that’s why defender was on the ground.

    Missed Penalties : 0

    Other Points :

min 8 (-) very bad positioning after the corner kick is taken

min 44 (?) Before 3rd goal of VIK there was possible handball but even it looks like handball we cannot proof it because of bad camera angel without any replay

min 54 (+) penalty appeal in favour of VIK. Play on is correct. Only body contact , no tripping

min 55 (+) no foul on dogso situation. Challenging with ball.

MARK : 7.7 unfortunatley poor performance at the first matchday of the new season. This kind of matches needed fresh, fit and younger referees. Referee was not motivated and very faw away from the expected level.

min 93 (-) elbow on face (VIK)

    Red Cards : 0

    Missed Red Cards : 0

    Penalties : 0

    Missed Penalties : 0

    Other Points :

min 47 (+) Penalty appeal (VIK) for illegal use of arm but defender tries to find position between the ball and attacker to keep the ball. Arms were open but there was no extra movement so play on is correct decision even the hand was on face.

min 58 (-) missed foul in favour of VIK just outside the penalty area. He was lucky because it could have been penalty kick if it was inside -only centimetres-

MARK : 8.3 Even he misses cards or wrong interpretation he was very good to keep the balance and very good control. This kind of matches can make trouble worse than you guess.

    Yellow Cards : 4

min 82 (-) it was careless (PYU)
min 85 (+) step on foot (PYU)

  16. MALMO vs VIKINGUR (3-2)
    Dumitru Muntean (Moldavia)

    Weather Condition :

    Excellent

    Match Description :

Tough game, good control but management could have been better. Crowd were noisy and they created a very good atmosphere inside. His confidence and fitness were very good. He made 2 important mistakes IMO.

    Yellow Cards : 8

    min 11 (+) reckless (MAL)
    min 22 (+) reckless (VIK)
    min 27 (+) simulation (VIK)
    min 30 (+) spa (VIK)
min 33 (+) tactical-off the ball offence (VIK)
min 40 (+) kicking the ball away (MAL)
min 65 (-) attacker is pulling the shirt clearly then he makes simulation. Wrong DFK wrong yellow card to MAL player
min 82 (+) GK time wasting (VIK)

    Missed Yellow Cards : 1

min 21 (-) high leg (MAL)

    Red Cards : 1

min 38 (-) Red card shown after second yellow card during the goal celebration (VIK). IMO player unnecessarily punished by a second yellow card. Is this not allowed to make a gesture to the crowd to “be silence now” after you scored a goal (finger on the mouth) ? If it happens at the group stage level you give a yellow card for this? I guess not ! Also consequences were nothing after all.

    Missed Red Cards : 0

    Penalties : 0

    Missed Penalties : 1

min 21 (-) contact to the neck with very high leg by the defender after the corner kick is taken. Yellow card is needed as well. Leg is bended and no brutality so no need for red card. Missed penalty for VIK

    Other Points :

min 12 (+) disallowed goal (VIK) offside (AR2)

min 27 (-) VIK player did simulation in the middle of the field. I can understand no card here but at least referee should’ve warned him. No reaction from the referee then the same player did simulation again exactly same place after 20 seconds. This time he received a yellow card but this yellow card could have been avoided easily by strong warning after the first offence.

min 65 (-) Referee insisted the player to leave the field after his treatment which was not correct because opponent received yellow card with this tackle. 4th official corrected referee about the regulation “player can stay on the field after his treatment if the opponent booked”.

MARK : 7.8 (He is a talented referee with good confidence inside the field. This referee should be monitored more in the future. He can learn from his mistakes to reach the next level.)

    1. I can't say thank you enough for all the reports you are writing!

      Delete
    2. I love your reports, but disagree on this one.

Min. 21 - Attacker clearly drops his head towards the foot. No foul OK.

Min. 38 - This is actually a great and very brave decision.

Min 65 - The player was not injured from the tackle, rather got up immediately and then went down much later. His gestures clearly showed that this was what he meant. Completely correct by Muntean to make him leave, and very bad by the 4th official to overrule him (here, Muntean should rather have stuck to his initial decision).

  17. LUDOGORETS vs SUTJESKA (2-0)
    Vitor Ferreira (Portugal)

    Weather Condition :

    Excellent

    Match Description :

Normal game. Good control but weak card management. He has to be more focused and motivated at the beginning of the season.

    Yellow Cards : 3

min 19 (-) this must be SFP (SUT)
min 62 (-) this must be red card (LUD coach)
min 80 (-) max careless tackle even no foul (LUD)

    Missed Yellow Cards : 0

    Red Cards : 0

    Missed Red Cards : 2

Min 19 (-) studs on calf with stretched leg. Zero chance to play with the ball. Referee showed yellow card but must be clear red card (SUT).

min 62 (-) LUD coach hold / kick the ball to prevent quick throw-in for opposing team. Referee showed yellow card but it must be red card.

    Penalties : 0

    Missed Penalties : 0

    Other Points : 0

MARK : 7.7 (He has to work hard to reach the next rounds. It is not easy with this weak performance.)

    Match Description :

    min 42 (+) spa / handball (BAL)
    min 50 (+) spa / holding (ZAL)
    min 54 (+) spa / tackle (BAL)

    min 84 (+) reckless (BAL)

    Missed Yellow Cards :

    min 17 (-) reckless (ZAL)
min 82 (-) reckless (ZAL). He also missed clear foul just outside the penalty area.

    Red Cards : 0

    Missed Red Cards : 0

    Penalties : 0

    Missed Penalties : 0

    Other Points :

min 42 (-) Referee should wait a few seconds for a good advantage instead of giving a foul and yellow card.

MARK : 8.2 (I don’t know if UEFA check their referees whether they look fit or not but this referee who has quality on the field but also has to be fit there.)

    Yellow Cards :

    min 37 (+) reckless (HIB)
    min 68 (+) holding (HIB)
min 68 (-) kicking opponent head on the ground by foot after being held by opponent. Must be red card.

    Missed Yellow Cards : 0

    Red Cards : 0

    Missed Red Cards :

    Match Description :

2 teams from the UK created a classical British game. Long passes, high ball game, physical contacts. But it was a very correct game, the referee did very well. Great fitness plus very good positioning.
