Interesting. If Lindhout has a match on July 27th, it is less likely that he officiates the Supercup on July 30th. Not impossible, two days rest, but we know how KNVB works... Referees are often a weekend off after their (midweek) international games.
ReplyDeleteHaving said that: full focus on Lindhout (2.cat) now, while Higler (2.cat) is more as deployed as AVAR.
We should see either Nijhuis or Higler in that case. I have a feeling that they will give Higler the cup final soon, so maybe not him to not give him all the finals? Or would that actually be a reason to give it to Higler as a test?
DeleteHigler missed his opportunity at Under 21 Tournament.
DeleteQuestion to Dutch readers: do you think Lindhout is better than him?
Let's also remember that these are the games in the week of the Summer Course (if not annulled again for COVID, no info so far), from 27 to 29 July in Frankfurt. Some some Category 1 and all Elite will miss from assignments, and we can also explain why there are some Category 2. A very good opportunity for them.
Higler had the 2019 supercup. Since than, only the 2021 edition has been played. I think it's unlikely.
DeleteI think Nijhuis or Blom could get it, or maybe Kamphuis.
I don't think Lindhout is better than Higler at all. Both are not so strong as referees, but Higler has much more experience. Lindhout is a favorite of Van Egmond, but I really don't see an elite referee in him.
I got more trust in Van der Eijk for the future.
Yes, Lindhout is better for me. Both of them lack charisma in my opinion, but Lindhout is able to have an approach that is usually respected by players. Higler’s approach is often less accepted (and also less consistent) - this creates problems, but he’s usually not completely able to solve those due to the aforementioned lack of charisma. On top of that, his decision making isn’t optimal with often soft decisions (whether they are penalties or cards). He’s done very well to get himself to the 3rd Dutch spot for a while, but something more shouldn’t be in question and it’s a good thing for Dutch refereeing that someone is taking over
DeleteLindhout is more consistent IMO.
DeleteLast season, he ended in 2nd place behind Makkelie in the ranking of VI (popular football site and magazine):
https://www.vi.nl/nieuws/makkelie-staat-op-eenzame-hoogte-en-is-scheidsrechter-van-het-jaar
I'd describe Lindhout as a lenient and background-minded referee. Good fitness, good cooperation with assistents/VAR and always well respected by players. Friendly guy.
DeleteHis performances are more consistent than the likes of Gozubuyuk and Higler. I think, he just lacks a bit charisma to reach Elite, but he could be a decent Category 1 referee.
a background referee like Lindhout is for me is not nesceserry better than Higler.... for my taste both have problems in hot matches... like we saw last season with Lindhout in NEC-Vitesse, for my taste in a few years guys like Kooij and Van der Eijk will be much better than Lindhout/Kamphuis and Higler (who are all average referees in international matches) and never Elite. Kooij (now seen als arrogant, like Kuipers also when he was 32), and Van der Eijk need to grow, and get more respect off players, coaches, but they are able to change their style.... they are simply to young/green yet, that takes time, like with Kuipers.
DeleteHigler had a really, really, really bad season in 21/22, making decisive mistakes in almost every match he refereed. I think Lindhout has a bit less experience and was a bit unlucky in some matches (f.e. NEC-Vitesse), but he also did really good in both AZ - PSV and Feyenoord - AZ. I think he is definitely dutch No. 3 now. Expected him for the Super cup final as well. Maybe still possible? If not, I can also see Kamphuis there.
Deletei wouldn't say Lindhout was unlucky in NEC-Vitesse.... he simply lost control because his background style, waited way to long to show the first yellow card, and couldn't manage to turn the situation around! a strionger presence was needed! Same like Dieperink lost it in Groningen-Heerenveen also because he wanted to wait to long with a first yellow card.
Delete@Eric: indeed, Joey Kooij has a very confident body language like Bjorn Kuipers. In the Netherlands, confidence is always confused with arrogance.
DeleteI think Joey Kooij could surprise a lot of people, if he gains more experience and keeps working hard. He is probably one of the most critized referees in Eredivisie. Many people tend to think, he is a referee at the highest level, because he is the son-in-law of Frank de Boer. And I do see some issues; in particular his foul detection needs to improve (too inconsistent). However, I think Kooij has all the 'tools' to do very well in a few years. He has the confidence, good presence (tall), good character, and it seems he can already deal with heavy criticisms and setbacks.
Van der Eijk, on the other hand is a bit too 'card happy' for my taste. A too strict 'by the book' referee, instead of feeling the game (a bit like Makkelie when he started). V.d. Eijk is a of referee that draws attention with many YC's or a very 'brave' but rather soft RC. He needs to loosen up a little, if he wants to achieve something internationally. But that's also a lack of experience
2021/2022:
Delete-Van der Eijk: 26 games - 3,11 YC - Sent of 7 players
-Kooij: 25 games - 2,48 YC - no red cards
For what it's worth. I know stats don't tell the whole story ;)
Kooij had like 5 games (both as ref and VAR) in a row with Groningen in which they were or felt disadvantaged, this hurt his image pretty badly (it received a lot of attention) - without those games, I think he would be in a much better position image-wise
Delete@Chefren Without any doubt Lindhout is beter than Higler. I except a lot of him this season
DeleteIs it “normal” and “decent” (looking at his age) for Irrati (category 2) to lead the hottest match of the round. When I look at the other category 1 referees who are also very experienced like Stavrev and other Italian referees for some reason I feel a little strange about the appointment of Irrati who in fact is clearly better known as a VAR specialist.
ReplyDelete*worthy
DeleteYou know the new list with talent referees
ReplyDeleteIs Nikola Dabanovic punished for being from a "small" country?
ReplyDeleteHe's the epithome of a good referee. Incredible fitness and positioning. Reminds me of Mazic.
What happened in the friendly Levante - Wolverhampton? :D

Delete47:20 and 58:10
Referee seems to be Jorge Tarraga Lajara (Spanish 3rd division).
those things also happen in amateurfootball, thats why i don't like and use the word friendly anymore, because most off the time friendly's are not friendly anymore and the are practicematches...i use the word practice match or game, it's not the first and certenly not the last "FRIENDLY" wich goes out off control!
DeleteThank to Upstylon report , here some clips from Ferencvárosi TC (HUN) - ŠK Slovan Bratislava (SVK) handled by Ricardo de Burgos (ESP).
ReplyDelete22' - Penalty appeal for handball
https://streamff.com/v/9f06d5
26' - YC for reckless use of arms
https://streamff.com/v/2e5990
To me, a mistake. Not even clear whether there is a contact with arm, it looks like handball. In all cases, no more than careless action for me.
30' - Corner kick incident and mass confrontation
https://streamff.com/v/72dfc1
I share the opinion of Upstylon, he could have done something more to prevent what happened later, because he was there. A bit afraid of taking more initiative.
36' - Missed careless foul
https://streamff.com/v/5147d2
43' - Penalty appeal, no replay
https://streamff.com/v/2e12b0
Looks correct decision.
45' - Missed foul, borderline beetween careless and reckless
https://streamff.com/v/0ff366
Not a full step, however for me quite expected YC for step on foot.
45'+2 - Missed foul, careless or reckless use of arm?
https://streamff.com/v/21074b
In my opinion in this case, YC to be issued.
64' - Careless of reckless use of arm, missed foul
https://streamff.com/v/9269f4
Definitely the field in which de Burgos has big points for improvement. In this case for me more careless, but still not whistling is a mistake.
90' - Possible SPA, no replay
https://streamff.com/v/f29752
Watching the clips, I think we can easily say that this was a quite challenging game with a trend to be even more difficult, maybe very challenging. I didn't include the situation before the start of second half, that makes it surely even more difficult for referee.
Big mistake in Shkupi vs Dinamo match, 2nd Dinamo goal chalked off for wrong offside
ReplyDeleteFK Bodø/Glimt (NOR) - Linfield FC (NIR)
ReplyDeletePenalty and RC for DOGSO: handball on the line.
https://streamja.com/RW6P7
Hot match for Irrati, first half not over already he has shown 6 bookings, plenty fouls and protests on his decisions.
ReplyDeleteBut so far,he has been good.
Yeah, solid half from him just not sure about the offside for Kyiv attacker (around 25th-26th minute) and it was a very dangerous attack, he could have been 1 on 1 with the keeper. But anyway even it was a mistake it was on his assistant.
DeleteExcellent performance by Tohver in Malmo (9 mark can be given). "So-so" quite challenging game because the game like Mourinho-style classic match with some frictions (an embarassing performance for Malmo especially for their mentality). All YCs and RC were correct (mandatory), he was very consistent with his line foul detection and also not passive (which is very important for friction situation). I think Zalgiris Vilnius could become Sheriff Tiraspol 2.0 because I see the style of play and the quality of the players are almost similar when compared to Sheriff's match against D. Zagreb in the UCL playoffs last season, same style, "same" core players ( African players with their lightning speed).
ReplyDeleteI agree. Despite (I think) one of the YCs being a case mistaken identity, I liked his performance a lot. Tohver seems more reliable than at least 20-30% of current Elite referees for these matches.
DeleteI cant understand this Di Bello ref.
ReplyDeleteIn some things he is so brilliant, like letting the game go and letting advantage and in other is just so ,I dont what word to use so I'm just gonna say so under average.
Like for example,2 clear bookings he either forgot or did not want to show, this year in Serie A that was his biggest problem, especially I can remember Napoli Roma match where everyone was mad at him.
IMO,average ref whos still has many things to improve.
Now in 2nd half he had 2 borderline situations were if he showed RC,he would not be wrong.
DeleteKucka's YC where he kicked player on the ground and Traore's YC where Traore showed no intention of getting to the ball.
Orange ones, but IMO DiBello can be backed.
More challenging matches tonight, just look at the card numbers in each match:
ReplyDeleteBOD-LIN 2 YC'S,1 RC
FEN-KIE 13 YC'S, 1 RC
ZUR-QAR 13 YC'S
MAL-ZAL 11YC'S,1 RC
SLO-FER 6 YC'S,60th min
OLY-MAC 5 YC'S,1st half only
All good referees are in Frankfurt ;)
DeleteŠK Slovan Bratislava - Ferencvárosi TC, Marco Di Bello
ReplyDeleteThe Italian referee handled the second leg of this very interesting tie, whose first leg was fairly well controlled by Spanish official Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea.
Similary to the first game, tonight's match was played in a hot and tense atmosphere, therefore mostly football-focused.
Having this in mind, it was quite clear that Di Bello was willing to be (very) lenient before blowing the whistle. This criteria was overall accepted and the right approach: sensible play-on calls in 14',16',17',23',36',60' and 81'. Others in 44',46',54' and 90+1' were very borderline though - way more foul than not - the Italian maintained his line to the edge, which contributed to create a fluid game, perhaps by allowing a little too much.
Good advantages were played in 27',59', he missed one in 30' and the one he gave in 44' wasn't the wisest choice.
Two penalties appeals in 37' and 61': he rejected both correctly IMO.
The other strength of Di Bello's display was presence: he showed strong qualities: quick warnings for DtR in 38' and 66', a well solved penalty area collision in 70', good reactions against dissents (30',53',55'), etc. His body language (authoritative looks, unflustered face, strong gestures) was effective and used in the right tone, it helped him for sure.
In the disciplinary control, it was a busy night for the Italian:
3' - excellent opening card to FTC93 for reckless tackle,
27' - good YC for reckless challenge given to SLO81 after a nice advantage
52' - YC for dissent to SLO20
55' - YCs to FTC16 (SPA-holding) and SLO33 for UB: close to VC(revenge kick, ok to caution in UEFA's appraoch)
57' - YC to FTC20 for SPA/reckless kick(some arguments for VC, sensible to show yellow here IMO)
84' - good YC to SLO9 for reckless use of arms
Other YCs could've been issued in 12', 48'(careless vs reckless steps on foot) and 85' (possible reckless use of arms, more YC than no-card IMO). He missed an obvious YC in 28' for a blatant SPA-holding to FTC3, who was already warned, clear mistake not to caution (-0.1)
Another point of improvement is the management of added time, especially in 1H: the three minutes given were not enough at all, considering that an injury treatment (+ substitution) in 7' took almost 4 minutes alone (!!), simply unacceptable in my book.
The mark should be in the 8.2-8.3 area, a satisfying performance in a very challenging game. Di Bello showed good skills which I often saw domestically, IMO a referee who is perfeclty able to handle hot clashes, nonetheless he shouldn't gamble too much to avoid cards: the missed card in 28' is simply a very poor mistake, reminds me of a few of his Serie A games which went wrong last season, this can easily alter his game control.
To summarize: He can reach more in my eyes, but he need to be careful with the key MtG moments of his games.
In the 3rd round, there are a few challenging Eastern/Balkan-clashes where an Elite referee wouldn't be misplaced.

Sheriff-Plzen Gözübüyük (NED)
DeleteThe designation to replace Gözübüyük (NED) has been changed, Makkelie (NED) has been designated - https://www.uefa.com/uefachampionsleague/match/2035377--sheriff-vs-plzen/matchinfo/
DeleteWas Gozubuyuk initially appointed?
Deleteinitially it was designated, then it was changed, I don't know the reason honestly
DeleteI had seen some hours ago Gozubuyuk name on uefa.com
DeleteThanks. That makes sense, because Makkelie's name stands out here, compared to the status of the other referees assigned in 3rd round. I already wondered why he got this game.
DeleteCakir and Dias are very good choices. Potentially very difficult games!
yes, I too had seen Gozubuyuk, now reviewing I saw that there is Makkelie
DeleteConsolation prize for Makkelie for missing last year's UCL final.
DeleteWhat a great consolation prize to be appointed to Sheriff Plzen… i just think Gozubuyuk had some problems and they replace him with another Dutch…
DeleteYes, hopefully there is nothing wrong with Gozubuyuk.
DeleteAppointments
ReplyDeleteBenfica Midtylland HERNANDEZ
Qarabag Ferencvaros EKBERG
M.Haifa Apollon MARIANI
Interesting!
ReplyDeleteCakir, Makkelie and Dias appointed in the 3rd round.
We just need to know the designation of Dynamo Kyiv (UKR) - Sturm Graz (AUT)
ReplyDeleteDynamo kyiv- Sturm Graz
DeleteFrancois letexier
yes i have seen before, thanks
DeleteDo you have any clue about UEFA Super Cup referee?
ReplyDeleteI think will be an Elite who never had an international final before, so no Cakir, Turpin, Makkelie, Lahoz, Kovacs, Orsato, Karasev, Marciniak, Taylor.
Of course no Spanish or German refs, so no Siebert, DCG and Gil Manzano.
Remaining names are just 3 imo: Oliver, Jovanovic, Soares Dias.
What do you think?
But are you saying to me?, I couldn't tell you honestly, you can ask those who are more prepared than me, I would risk saying something wrong.
DeleteNo Luigi, i was asking to all the readers on the blog, but thank you for your reply :)
DeleteAh okay ahahahahah, imagine
DeleteMy prediction is Oliver, because he is going to the World Cup.
DeleteOther interesting detail to follow this season: English referees in International (UEFA) games and the assignments of VAR's. Since no English VAR's have been selected for the WC in Qatar, we can expect Taylor and Oliver to work with other (non-English) VAR's in next months.
Question is: do they have a fixed VAR in Qatar or will they rotate... My idea is, at least one of the German VAR's will work with Taylor/Oliver, as two German VAR's have been selected, but one German ref (Siebert).
Given how committee is appointing him, and hoping to continue with the new trend, I would say that Jovanovic is a more than hot name for this game, That's my prediction.
DeleteYes, Jovanovic was also 4th official in the EL final. They have serious plans with him. Should be him or Oliver
DeleteNo Jovanovic as he is appointed on 9 August in Champions League.
DeleteMy prediction is
DeleteOliver, Burt, Benett, Massa - Kwiatkowski, Frankowski, Kavanagh
Second leg
ReplyDeleteZalgiris - Bodo/glimt: sandro schaerer
Apollon - M.Haifa: Felix Zwayer
Plzen - Sheriff: Orel Grinfeeld
Pyunik - Crvena zvezda: Collum
Midtylland - Benfica: Jovanovic
Ferencvaros - Qarabah: del cerro Grande
Dynamo Zagreb - Ludogorets: bastien
Psv monaco gil manzano
Rangers St.gilloise: Sidiropoulus
Oliver big candidate for Super Cup.
DeleteHalil umut meler maybe as the fourth official @chefren
Deleteis Makkelie is the only WC ref in the 3rd round?
DeleteYes, he is. I guess he was not planned for this round, as he will replace Gozubuyuk.
DeleteIstván Vad in Bodø for UCL Q3 1st leg, how should we "read" that appointment?
ReplyDeleteIs it normal appointment after 3 years break?
Deleteand two rounds in a row
DeleteFull picture of CL R3 appointments:
ReplyDeleteBodo Glimt - Zalgiris: Vad / Schärer
Maccabi Haifa - Apollon Limassol: Mariani / Zwayer
Sheriff - Viktoria Plzen: Makkelie / Grinfeld
Crvena Zvezda - Pyunik Yerevan: Soares Dias / Collum
Benfica - Midtjylland: Hernández Hernández / Jovanovic
Ferencváros - Qarabag: Ekberg / Del Cerro Grande
Ludogorets - Dinamo Zagreb: Çakir / Bastien
Monaco - PSV: Massa / Gil Manzano
Union Saint Gilloise - Rangers: Letexier / Sidiropoulos
In this context, Vad appointment is indeed strange, totally different background if compared to all othe choices. We have mostly all Elite referees and "in focus" Category 1. Vad doesn't belong to that, he can be a replacement. Maybe a quite similar appointment is Ekberg, but I consider him a bit different because for a long time treated as Elite and close to promotion, definitely not the same path of the Hungarian, or at least we have to go extremely back in the past...
DeleteI am not surprised to see that Bastien and Cakir are on the same game. In some way, they get the same treatment by committee: their games are not so sonorous, but potentially (extremely) challenging, hot atmospheres or in some other way “problematic”.
DeleteWhile on the other hand referees like Letexier, Gozubuyuk, Gil Manzano, Massa are almost always assigned to the more football-focused (expected) matches.
Thanks again to Upstylon for his report on Di Bello.
ReplyDeleteHere, some of the incidents from ŠK Slovan Bratislava (SVK) - Ferencvárosi TC (HUN). Having watched all mentioned situations but without knowing more about the performance, I would go for 8.3 rather than 8.2, also due to the challenging context and the approach by the Italian, but... you are surely right when you say some things about him. When at the best, he looks to be the perfect referee, but then suddenly in his games something absolutely incredible can happen (take as example in this case the easy card missed in 28'), the strange thing, I watched him over the years, seems that he does that on purpose, he doesn't want to show some cards, and in this way he spoils a bit what can be an almost perfect performance. On last season he has been excellent in serie A, despite of that for unknown reasons he wasn't considered for Coppa Italia final, he deserved this assignment. What I can say is that these black-outs a few time ago were definitely more frequent, so my hope is that he is on the best path to reach more.
3' - YC for reckless challenge

Absolutely mandatory decision, game could have immediately gone wild, with that challenge.
12' - Possible YC
https://streamff.com/v/cc3211
In case, very difficult to spot for referee. Even a good replay is missing.
27' - YC for reckless challenge
https://streamff.com/v/f024ff
Very good advantage and then YC.
28' - Missed YC for holding - SPA - LoR
https://streamff.com/v/40c536
At first let me say I must agree, missed YC, indeed, but there is this argument about the SPA that are not stopped after the attempt by players, so in this case I heard that some referees don't issue the card, this is something I don't like, but a possible explanation, it seems as it is used to issue afterwards only if reckless. But there is the absolutely unsporting act with that blatant holding and so previous reasoning is annulled: UEFA wants always a YC here, even in case of player failing his action to stop opponent.
37' - Penalty appeal

It seems as no replay was shown, but clearly not a penalty, correct to play on.
48' - Possible YC for reckless challenge
https://streamff.com/v/46dd19
As you said, fully agree, here borderline because step on foot not full.
52' - YC for dissent

55' and 57' possible RCs for violent conducts / SFPs
https://streamff.com/v/92ccc3
https://streamff.com/v/7f19a0
Two incidents to be analyzed together.
While in the second case (57') I can accept YC because the movement of the player can still suggest us that there can be a 5% of looking for the ball, to me the situations like 55', managed with a YC, are a nonsense. I say that because it is clear what player does, without any intent to play ball, even if with a soft / slight contact, he wants to hurt opponent. Studs in the back are not the best thing, we could say. I know that UEFA is OK with YC in such situations, but the reasoning behind such ideas are really without any logic, if you ask me. This was a RC with VAR to intervene "in my world".
61' - Penalty appeal

Nothing significant, good decision by Di Bello.
85' - Possible YC for reckless use of elbows
https://streamff.com/v/de36e9
I would say not 100% clear with this only replay and referee to be supported, without considering the possible YC as a very missed one.
86' - YC for reckless use of arm while jumping
https://streamff.com/v/400a1d
Absolutely agree, the movement of elbow on player's shoulder, hitting face is very dangerous.
I checked also other moments you mentioned and indeed some positive note from the Italian. Let's see how he will continue this year.
If I have to pick, my mark would indeed be 8.3 (it's the fairer one) given the difficulty of the game (high to very high, especially at the start of 2H), I wrote 8.2 along because one might be more harsh on the few mistakes he made (I was genuinely p*ssed by the fact he only added 3 minutes of additional in 1H, this mistake is really avoidable, at least to me :D).
DeleteThe 55' makes me sad when I rewatch it TBH: the intensity of the kick is what makes a good decision to show YC according to UEFA (so I don't blame Di Bello at all), therefore it would be so much better to always deem these misconducts as VC, and to consequently send off the players who behave this way.
