  1. Surprising, but nice appointment to see:

Jochem Kamphuis (NED) in charge of Villareal - Austria Wien. Assistants Diks and Honig, fourth official Kooij.

I must say, it's a very good match for him! I did not expect that debut after a period in which he did not get many matches, and in NL he doesn't seem to be considered much for big matches, but this is actually quite a big match, considering the fact Villareal reached the CL SF.

  2. There is a certain focus on Serbian referees in this round. Two appointments for them.
About the rest, another appointment for Maresca, this time in Conference League, clearly the reward for his domestic path in recent times goes on. I don't think that he will reach more than that, but still good, he can have many regrets, could have done all that by far earlier in his career.
Kulbakov in Conference League after the discussed game in Rennes, still very good, given the very particular situation for him, to get a game, no doubts about that.
And De Burgos must get always an appointment, regardless of the level of his officiating...
The committee focus for something bigger seems to be over on names like Bognar, Petrescu and Jovic. About the latter from Croatia, I thought they had big plans... didn't happen so far.

    1. Jović is an interesting case. After several good seasons (especially 20/21 in EL GS) he fully deserved the promotion to 1st cat. But lately he hasnt been showing a good form and progress. In domestic league he has become a bit controversial and in international games I rrmember Portuguese coach publicly complaining after a game against Switzerland, which is not something committee likes. Also with recent Croatian FA politics and pushing new referees, maybe there is no adequate overall support for him, I dont know. To me it is a pity that he changed his style from charismatic manager that communicates a lot to players to more German style, something like Zwayer or Brych, where he seems annoyed by players.

Last sunday he officiated Sibenik-Gorica and showed 3 2nd yc and a pk. At least one sending off was wrong (I would argue 2/3), and a pk was rather deabtable (but no VAR stuff)

    2. Espen Eskas can fight for Elite, the process has been accelerated by Rosetti and committee in recent times, now it's up to him. Difficult to make the step in the next categories update because too close (if categories will be updated), but surely the target is to become a regular CL referee.
Saggi to follow after him, of course thank to his age he has long time to develop.
These should be the names of future for Norway.

    3. @Forlan, Brych is one of the best ever referees . He has everything and players are not annoyed by him as you can see in his games that he has huge authority. He had many big games and ofc he was more in spotlight the most refs but he is one of the greatest ever for sure. Jovic have zero authority and I am not surprised that he has showed over 30 yellow and 4 red cards in his last 3 games. I can give him that he has guts and in best days he is like former Italian giant Rocchi but many times at the end of games he lost focus and game.

    4. 1) I referred to the referee being annoyed by players, not the other way around. Aytekin is also a great example of this, but he was at the same time very different in his management so we cannot compare that

      2) To say that Jovic has 0 authority is simply wrong! Even in the last game, he issued 2 wrong 2nd yc and a wrong pk without some excessive dissent from the players. And on this blog there were people commenting how he lost control in Real Betis-Celtic last season, the comment that can only be made by people who never watch Betis players in Spanish league. Or Portugal national team... Look how Orsato is molested in some Italian derbies. This is why I commented about style, I think more active (lets say Spanish) approach might suit him better.

    5. Jović's big 'problem' (on the highest level) for me is that he expends so much (cognitive) energy keeping up with play excellently as he does, there isn't much 'room' left to be a charismatic leader, and sometimes to make proficient calls in foul recog / disciplinary. As a consequence his 'real' grip on the game compared to, eg. as previously mentioned Brych, is relatively limited. I like FJ as a ref but his limit should be 1st Cat, tbh.

Echoing Daniel's thoughts - I haven't seen Bel yet, are UEFA right to consider him a talent?

  3. Fantastic to see Rohit Saggi getting another UECL group stage appointment, giving him four European club appointments this season alone (UCL P/R, UCL 1QR, 2 x UECL GS). Well deserved as he is one of the up and coming referees within the Scandinavian countries.

  4. Fourth official in Alkmaar, Sivert Amland, a medical doctor by profession, being very strict with players bleeding from their nose and telling the Apollon physio what to do :D

  5. After all the criticism de burgos got on this blog last matchdays, I can report a very good second half by him tonight in Cologne (did not watch first half). That was the de burgos that I know from LaLiga who has an outstanding foul detection imo and also a relatively good communication with clear gestures. Though his body language is not convincing all the time
