  1. Ciochirca, a professional translator, seems to be appreciated for his language skills and maybe become an "Austrian Irrati": Of course, he can communicate with Lechner in German language but I have the feeling that UEFA currently rather focuses on his role as a VAR than as a head referee ...

  2. The complete lack od nominations for Polish referees, Frankowski, Raczkowski, Stefański ommited in the group stage by committees

  3. Maybe with a bit of delay, the focus on Kruashvili after U21 final has started again, important observer in Monaco for him.
A step ahead for Stéphanie Frappart in Braga (not the first time she will officiate in this stadium, I remember she was there one year ago as well), let's see how she will perform with an important observer.
Excellent moment for Peljto, another assignment for him, but I notice that very often he changes assistant referees, differently from most of the names in focus by committee.
The good path continues for Nyberg, while the game in Belgrade for Visser could be very dirty and hot, even more knowing his style, this will be a very interesting test.
Pinheiro with a normal game in Europa League after Velasco Carballo observation in Champions is surely OK, no hurry for getting another CL assignment.

    1. Please note that Visser operates for the first time with a full Belgian VAR team in UEL ! Next step forward for Belgian referee efforts. Visser has to prove he is capable managing such tough game. I am curious. Anybody knows what Rosetti thought ( Rosetti was referee observer himself) about him in his previous (only second) UCL appearance ?

      Delete
    2. Yes but this is still 3 games left after this one and away team have already 6 points. Sure tough game but not do or die. He had more important game this year in Greece, second leg of 1/8 finals in Athens where atmosphere was insane and he did very good job. All in all I think this is good choice from committee. I am a lot more concern about Mariani and Frappart.

  4. Stéphanie Frappart in Braga is surprise for me. She had very low key games lately and now they sen her to very hot stadium where she had huge problems last year. She had Europa League game here Braga-Mitjylland where she showed 9 yellow and 1 red card. But if I remember she got good rating for this problematic game. I watched preview for game Porto-Braga where Braga coach tells how this two games in next 10 days against Royale Union and priority because they want 1 place and go direct to 1/8 finals. I guess for small club as Union it is the same and Frappart will have really tough game here. If you check Bragas last 2 games they took in both 6 yellow cards and are very aggressive toward referees both players and the coach. Glad for her ofc but very very challenging game. Observer Mazic tells us that this is hot game.

Another really challenging game will be in Belgrad , always hostile atmosphere there and key match for both teams. Visser for me right man as he getting better and better.

One question for Chefren about this sentence for Visser, even more knowing his style? What exactly does this mean ? Thank you.

    1. I see him as referee that can go in trouble when big pressure and teams play in a rather unfair manner, I remember Real Madrid - Sheriff. He is brave in taking decisions, but I don't see so far a big development in match control, so this can be a more than huge test, more than a CL game.

      Delete
    2. Thank you. His problem might be that he still has no authority in Europe. Agree with you that this kind of games are much more challenging then big CL games.

  6. Given that he was one among the best UEFA referees ever, for sure he is important as observer. Furthermore, it seems he has joined the Talent & Mentor program.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Yes, he is mentoring Croatian Ante Čulina (young talent) and Dario Bel. That being said, I expect Bel to get an UECL appointment this season maybe.

  14. OT Possible RC in Gil Manzano CL game (Benfica - PSG):
    https://streamable.com/ezevqc
He had the best positioning there, we can be sure he saw exactly what happened.
Furthermore, as it happens very often, some possible fouls before the incident, not whistled. The classic "shaky style". Keeping the control of the game, but definitely at the "edge" of it...

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. RC would be clearly wrong IMO. No excessive force, but a natural movement by the Benfica player and the Paris player endangers himself.
YC is probably quite expected here, but I wouldn't even call it reckless by the meaning of the word.

      Delete
    2. I tend to agree with Philipp here, that leg has to land somewhere. I don't see enough responsibility of the "offender" to justify a RC here.

  15. 45+2 in Monaco, there is an interesting incident. Trabzonspor #29 was trying to stand up and take position, Monaco #4 came from behind tried to jump over him but hit Trabzonspor #29. Even though he was trying to jump over him he didn't allow him to take position. Possible penalty. Georgian ref didn't give.

    1. Rather wrong IMO. The stretched out arm hasn't the purpose to block the ball and the defender can't expect the ball to get to this exact place (finally coming from a very short distance). This overweighs the fact, that the arm is that far away from the body, I think.
But I assume, it will be a clear penalty for others.

      Delete
    2. Clear penalty indeed. The position of the arm should be enough to assess it as punishable, I repeat again that if we go in such complicated arguments, for some incidents it will be impossible to have objective criteria... would be too much grey area. So a player must be aware if he acts in this way, penalty regardless of the rest. Should be a correct OFR according to committee, quite sure.

      Delete
    3. Agree with Chefren on this one. The player has to take full responsibility for such a position of his arm, IMO.

      Delete
    4. @Phillip, why is the arm up though? It's to block or hold the opponent. Now, it's not enough to be a penalty because the action is trifling. But I still don't think we should ignore the fact that his arm was deliberately put in that position for unfair purposes. So, when the ball hits it... that's his problem.

There's an apt saying in the U.S. and I'm not sure if it's universal or not, but it is "play stupid games, win stupid prizes."

      Delete
    5. Hm, I don't know, whether that really is a valid argument in line with the LotG. I would have said, it doesn't matter whether his arm is there for holding back the opponent, for signalling to his teammates, for dissent or because he is waving his wife in the audience. As long as it doesn't include the intention to possibly block the ball, all these case should be treated equally, I think.
And yes, in all cases, one can discuss, whether it is not enough, that the arm is in an unnatural position. But instructional examples exist, where a penalty is not expected, even if the arm is that clearly stretched out.

      Delete
    6. I can accept that this is a penalty by the rule book, but it's against to the spirit of the game for sure. Both player was holding each other, the CZ striker headed the ball from 10 cm to the hand.

  19. Penalty for Roma, this time Van Boekel reported correctly the handball to Jug. I must say, the latter without the best boduy language, he looked to be quite annoyed by the OFR, sometihng I already noticed from him in a previous Nations League game... maybe he doesn't like too much VAR, but that's only my feeling.

  21. Very long VAR check in Denmark (MID - FEY), but with a correct outcome I think. Handball and a penalty for Feyenoord. Two VAR interventions already in the match, but what I've seen Al-Hakim is doing an okay job. I'm not particularly impressed, but the first VAR intervention was a very tight off-side, almost impossible to see, and the handball should have been seen I guess, but in general I like his decisions.

  25. RC for violent conduct in Rome, excellent spot by AR1, who informed Jug. The strange thing is that VAR check appeared on the screen before Jug had shown the card... so I think van Boekel had already started his investigation as well, but Slovenian crew was quicker on the pitch. That's very good.

A very interesting situation from the UEFA Youth League match Ajax - Napoli. Sylwestrzak's perfect decision: penalty kick and red card for DOGSO. The goalkeeper fouls with no attempt to play. I hope that the young Polish referee will be promoted to category 1 in december.
