Eksas and Frankowski got the matches in the most uncertain group, I guess it's a very good assignment. Di Bello also got a sonorous clash ! and finally confirmed Pineirho to be checked by Rosetti for his promotion to elite. I guess that the Portuguese is a strong candidate with Ekberg, Nyberg, Visser and Mariani

Enjoy!
Thanks for the clips! Much appreciated.
Delete12' - Missed FK.
23' - For this to be cautioned the referee has to deem it as SPA; there was only one Porto player on the opponent's half and he was covered by two Benfica defenders, therefore no real promising attack has been stopped. Correct decision.
24' - Correct YC to Eustáquio (Porto) - reckless kick; should've been a YC to João Mario (Benfica) for mobbing (especially in UEFA this season) but at least a good verbal action against such behaviour has been taken by the referee.
27' - Correct 2YC to Eustáquio (Porto), very borderline to straight RC for SFP. The outcome in this game would be the same but I would not have been surprised seeing an OFR to change the 2YC to straight RC as well. But still OK, especially this being a 2YC.
40', 42' - Nah, a YC would be too much for any of these actions - careless striking and careless tripping.
60' - Clearly an advice from a team member (fourth official?) but the delay was not sooo big given the circumstances - as for this kind of incident I would even say that the reaction from Pinheiro was very quick, he fully trusted his colleague's perception. YC is correct. It's not that Benfica player plays the ball, the ball is rather played by Porto player and only deflects from Benfica player's foot before the step is performed.
74' - Correct YC to Taremi (Porto) for unsporting behaviour but surely another YC to Otávio (Porto) should've been issued after wildly approaching and pushing the Benfica player who provoked all the incident (although his celebration was nothing 'special', I would give him a YC for UB as well).
So it is Pinheiro with Rosetti, after the observation of Velasco in CL now another important one. Even more after Soares Dias recent performances, committee is looking for a strong name from this country. Curious that a Portuguese will have Italian VARs, but that's easily explained by the fact that all the trusted one by UEFA are busy in other games, so Rosetti will go to Belgrade with his countrymen working as VAR (they shouldn't be in Nyon).
ReplyDeleteImportant focus on Simović (SRB).
Is that possible Daniel Siebert Will get an appointment next week sir?
DeleteYes it is possible, but I think either in Europa League or Conference League. Not Champions League.
DeleteThoughts on pawson getting his 3rd appointment in Europa League this year
ReplyDeleteNormal appointments for a regular Category 1.
DeleteOFR for handball penalty in that game. I've only seen one replay but seemed a little harsh for me. Is it really a clear error to play on?

@Chefren. Question about Maresca. I read that you wrote that he has pretty lenient style lately. Have to comment on this as I watched him a lot in action last year and for me he is same old Maresca who is very easy on cards. I can not find any other active referee in Italy who dishes cards like him, maybe Ayroldi only. Any small protest from players is yellow card, only in last 5,6 games from him he has give 10 cards for small protest in same situations there referee like Turpin,Makkelie,Marciniak would never give a card.
ReplyDeleteMaybe you wrote that when he has few very lenient games because he got a lot critic for giving many cards, time when he had Genoa -Derby with 40 fouls and only 3 cards but for me his last 15 games has been old card happy Maresca.
Can add that Seria A is first time in last 15 years under 5 card per game, counted this and last season. Not surprised with Doveri,Massa,Mariani getting biggest games.
Well, in terms of approaching games he has surely changed, no doubts about that. I can remember a red card to Ibrahimovic a few seasons ago that created big troubles to him and it was all about a misunderstanding, with referee being definitely too harsh. Now he looks to be a bit closer to players, of course he will never lose his character and that's something I really like, but I'm sure in past, with same conditions, he will have issued by far more cards. I was never interested in counting cards for a game or a referee, as you have probably noticed, I never intervene in such discussions, I just think that a card must be issued when clear, if a referee tries to avoid that, he can only experience troubles.
DeleteLast but not least, about Doveri, Massa and Mariani getting big games, true, we can see a difference between them and Maresca, and for a big game in nowadays football, fans will always prefer a referee keeping cards and not Maresca. I think for this reason the latter will not officiate the next big game in serie A, Inter - Juventus, despite of being in an excellent form. It should go to Doveri who was sent in serie B the last week and in this round is totally out. But Rocchi now treats Maresca like a very big name because he deserved that for what he did in recent times.

DeleteSo, the rumours that Dallas left the Committee are true or not? I haven`t seen anything official so far. Should we consider him an important observer anymore or not?
ReplyDeleteFrom what I have heard from some top officials, he's not in the committee anymore.
DeleteIt's weird thing because on paper he is stil there.

Challenging match for Di Bello in Eindhoven. A strong PSV, that tries to annoy the Arsenal players, and Arsenal players that are annoyed by their loss. That leads to confrontations, in which in my opinion Di Bello is sometimes a bit unlucky in how he tries to solve it.
ReplyDeleteHowever, the big decisions are rights and I do like his foul detection.
Fenerbahçe - Rennes
ReplyDeleteWhat a match in Istanbul! As usual, hot atmosphere in Turkey. Good job by Serbian referee team. This was 1st match in group stage of Europa League for Simovic. Very good perfomance.
OFR in Helsinki for disallowing a goal due to offside. Clearly punishable position by Roma player, standing in front of keeper in full contact with him, should have been detected directly by assistant referee in my opinion...
ReplyDeleteAnother OFR now in Helsinki, and a wonderful goal (a pity...) was disallowed. Reckless use of arms in penalty area before the shot from a long distance, I think that reason for calling referee is very clear and correct for what we can see, but still the fact that foul is not directly related to goal scored by the involved players makes it a bit particular. UEFA should deem this intervention as correct, though.
ReplyDeleteVery good João Pinheiro in Belgrade in front of Roberto Rosetti. Not a challenging match, but I think he didn't make any mistake whatsoever. Every decision was correct.
ReplyDeleteHe was perfect.
DeleteAfter watching the game in full yesterday, I can agree with you: optimal foul detection, good disciplinary approach, always in full control of the match and with a high level of alertness. I was very pleased by his performance.
DeleteChefren, prediction for UCL and UEL for MD6?
ReplyDeleteEuropa League is very difficult and I have no time for going deep in all groups' analysis.
DeletePredictions Champions League:
Rangers - Ajax Kružliak (SVK)
Liverpool - Napoli Gözübüyük (NED)
Leverkusen - Brugge Letexier (FRA)
Porto - Atlético Vinčič (SVN)
Bayern - Inter Nyberg (SWE)
Plzen - Barcelona Visser (BEL)
Marseille - Tottenham Marciniak (POL)
Sporting - Eintracht Frankfurt Kovacs (ROU)
Milan - Salzburg Mateu Lahoz (ESP)
Chelsea - Dinamo Zagreb Rumsas (LTU)
Real Madrid - Celtic Treimanis (LVA)
Shakhtar Donetsk - Leipzig Jovanović (SRB)
Manchester City - Sevilla Grinfeeld (ISR)
Copenhagen - Borussia Dortmund Dabanović (MNE)
Juventus - PSG Stieler (GER)
Maccabi - Benfica Collm (SCO)
You can't choose Gözübüyük because he from the samme country with Ajax, and I don't think Visser will be in plzen after he refereed the matchday 1 betwen the same teams (:
DeleteGozubuyuk is allowed to go in that game because Napoli and Liverpool are both already qualified and they can't be reached by the other two teams, we saw similar appointments in past seasons.
DeleteAbout Visser, I didn't remember the MD1 assignment, so maybe a switch with another Category 1 in focus is possible.
I'm curious about Siebert, I think he will get Europa League, but which kind of game?
Soares Dias could be even in Conference League after the terrible game he had in CL.
I'd expect Jorgji and Tohver in CL.
DeleteI would love to see Jorgji in CL. What about Glova?
DeleteJorgji gave a YC for FTC's captain, I don't know why, Dibusz go there only for calm down a player who was arguing with the ref... And the plus extra time (more than a minute after the original 3) was too much, it was in advance for Monaco, they were against the clock since they scored the first goal.
DeleteI think we are going to see Frappart in one of the inconsequential games, just to justify her inclusion in the WC tournament squad.
DeleteAbsolutely good remark about Frappart, it is true, including the reason for the appointment, I wouldn't exclude Bayern - Inter with Kuipers... chances for Monzul to get something as well.
DeleteWhat happened in Manchester?
ReplyDeleteMmhh extremely difficult situation, I think there are some arguments in favor of play on and for most of people it is difficult to think this was a clear and obvious mistake, due to arm's position, that looks quite close to body.
ReplyDeleteBut... and that's the problem, there is in my opinion a movement of arm by defender that makes this call at least reasonable, and I think in Italy it could be supported.
I think that Attwell called it being afraid of missing the UEFA guidelines about handballs in case of different choice, I can't blame him, it is very tricky, but basically there are by far more arguments in favor of play on. Nevertheless, let's add as possible point for intervention, I think Pawson had totally missed it.
I completely agree with your assessment here.
ReplyDeleteGerman media was - like the clip's commentator - slightly surprised about the decision, without calling it wrong though.
Also the Union players (with one short exception) didn't ask for it and were rather annoyed by the stop for the check.
So clearly not "clearly and obvious" and I don't know whether it's helpful to stretch the "missed incident" so far.
So, let's continue with Enea Jorgji, after the previous report, now focus on his last game: Ferencváros (HUN) - AS Monaco (FRA).
ReplyDeleteAssessing the difficulty is not easy :) I think that based on the stadium, attendance, pressure and the well-known Hungarian passion for football, this should start from a higher level than other game, nevertheless in reality I think the game was fair in most of its progress, but yes, there were some tense moments, due to the course of the score. I can mention especially the last minutes, after 1-1 goal, but also some parts of first half in which Monaco indeed, as somebody wrote above in this discussion, started already to waste a bit of time, due to the early goal they scored.
At the end I would say the least grade of "quite challenging", but rather close to "normal" difficult, still not an easy game, of course, but the context could have allowed by far more difficulty for referee.
In this scenario, overall referee did well and I found again the style he had used in previous game. Some suggestions: trying more connection with players, without acting too often strictly by book can maybe help in a major acceptance. To clarify: we are already at a good level, but it is definitely possible to improve.
Most of the cards issued were indeed for protests and different situations than "normal" fouls, referee was very strict, according to UEFA, and that's something I like. Also, the first positive remark of this performance, and we can connect it with what we saw in previous game, is the use of advantage, it was faultless all game long. No penalty area incidents and/or tricky situations like possible red cards, and that's another reason for which game had a certain difficulty.
Delete4' Good advantage, correctly disallowed goal by AR2 but missed YC for step on foot.
https://streamable.com/qeuykv
All in one action, with more focus, referee would have also booked player, but it was not easy to spot the step on foot. This will remain as the only clear YC missed in the game.
24' Advantage and YC for reckless challenge
https://streamable.com/0l8sv1 (live)
https://streamable.com/okmaao (replay and card)
About a minute passed after the advantage, at the next stoppage referee correctly booked player. He had made advantage signal as you can see in the first video, so he was aware. The game was deliberately "stopped" by players, they kicked ball out, and referee booked. That's good because he had allowed game to continue, in case he had stopped the game after a certain time by himself, he would have given weak signal. This was well managed.
31' Goal and player from Hungarian side booked, very likely protests
https://streamable.com/okmaao
The situation was reported on the blog, not exactly clear why player was booked, but we can't question referee, missing the evidence of the reason.
36' Management of injured player
https://streamable.com/bxgdlh
A few later, another foul close to benches needed his intervention, these were the most "difficult" minutes of first half. At the end nothing extra-ordinary happened, though.
45'+3 Good advantage, possible YC for reckless tackle, no replay
https://streamable.com/5szk88
56' SPA-ish context, YC
https://streamable.com/etav73
80' YC for protest, due to missed corner, it was evident deflection, but good decision about the card
https://streamable.com/vhwcd0
84' YC for dissenting gesture
https://streamable.com/070jgn
Referee not accepted by the player, when booked he continued with gestures, in this clip I think you can find the point for improvements I mentioned before, with a different management (earlier in the game), maybe such situations can be avoided, I don't talk about an easy card, but surely it wasn't well accepted by player, and referee can work on it. Few seconds before, possible YC for reckless challenge close to AR1, you can see, at the beginning of video, no replay though.
90'+1 YC to coach, I think for protests after having known about the added time, referee informed by either FO or AR1
https://streamable.com/2pify7
Maybe 4 minutes of added time would have been better choice. But to me, Monaco wasted more time in first half than in the second (and indeed 3 minutes were given in first half as well).
90'+2 YC for a "classic" reckless challenge
https://streamable.com/2pify7
A frequent kind of foul that was definitely missing in this game, and this was very particular, as I said. :)

DeleteThanks for the detailed report!
DeleteYes very nice detailed report! Personaly i dont like this very strict line too much, FE the cards in 80 en 84. But for me the most important thing is that if you do this, you do this consistently and you can praise Jorgji for that
DeleteChefren did you see Lindhout in Florence? How did he do it?
I agree that the approach by the Albanian referee should be valid for all, otherwise it remains as something particular.
DeleteNevertheless, having to make a choice, one surely can agree with this style.
I didn't watch Lindhout but it was reported easy game and he did well, if I find time on next days mayb I post something, but nothing crucial as far as I can read. The pass for Category 1 should be ready...
Thank you!
DeleteChefren, after you saw those two matches of Jorgji in details. what's your opinion, any chance for debut on MD6
DeleteI think that a debut in CL is possible on paper, however I think that appointments were made before those games, so I don't know whether he was already planned... the "nornal" path in my opinion would be getting it on next year, having more chances for a further developmene before. However, based on the games, the debut would be OK, it's just about the timing...
DeleteOT: Zwayer cant be used on this MD6. According to Sky he is sick. :/
