DeleteReferees don't and rightly shouldn't care about future matches. They should only focus on what is happening in the present. And in the present, the Moroccan player committed (in the opinion of the referee) two bookable offenses and he was rightly sent off.

Only options would be a 3rd KO-match for Sampaio (undeserved), Valenzuela (not good enough) or Claus (if they wanted to give him another match, he would have been the perfect name for ENG-FRA but they gave it to Sampaio).

And UEFA: Maybe Turpin, if France lose tonight. Or Marciniak, but I consider him in pole position for the final. So then, the best option for me would be Makkelie. Very safe pair of hands, I would definitely go for him.

DeleteI can see Ramos in the France-Morocco Semifinal due to the last CONCACAF referee truly available (Elfath unavailable due to being Moroccan-American descent). I can also see Orsato in the Argentina-Croatia Semifinal due to him not being eligible to go straight to Final with only two group stage appointments.
DeleteElfath with more likely get the Third Place Play-off if Morocco beats France. Marciniak will most likely get the Final.
Personally, I would love to see Barton in France-Morocco. In my humble opinion, I think that he's had a better tournament than Ramos. However, I realize that Barton is quite young, and a poor performance can torpedo his promising career. Also, Ramos is more experienced at the International level and that gives him an advantage.

During the last world cup, Pitana had France's next match after beating Argentina, and Cunha had France's next match after beating Uruguay. This doesn't seem like an issue.

DeleteI didn't watch the game, I saw crucial situations, all very good by Tello. No penalty for Portugal, especially the situation in added time of first half was a simulation and correct two YC to Moroccan players. Commentators are saying that these cards didn't suit with the approach he used before, I can't answer but surely if I watch them as isolated incidents, I agree without doubts.

Well, If France knocks out England tonight, we will see Morocco vs France in the semifinal. In my opinion it is no problem to nominate referee from one of these countries for the final. I think that If Morocco will continue to the final, we can expect Turpin, and if France will continue, we can expect Elfath. But if FIFA thinks this could be a problem, there are more candidates.

After reading that thread and recalling the rubbish I used to post. I am completely and totally ashamed. I'm not going to lie. At times I get the urge to go back to being that person. But I realize that this isn't the place or time to act out in that manner. A civil blog is a happy blog.

DeleteExcellent Tello's act. Safe, calm, making a good management of the game, seeing the parte of fouls and taking off any room for discussion. So far the best for Quarterfinals, showing that Conmebol referees are on top over UEFA. I hope the same for Sampaio on next game!
ReplyDeleteI agree, best of the three so far. He communicated really well with players and was no-nonsense with his disciplinary control. None of this Clattenburg-esque "game-management" that got Lahoz into big trouble yesterday, just calling his game and doing a great job at it.
DeleteTwo incidents to highlight on the communication front: the halftime whistle that Portugal thought stopped an attack, he explained calmly and talked human-ly with the players about it, to good effect. Then I think in the second half, there was a potential SPA foul by Morocco that Portugal protested, and he calmly explained (and showed in a kind of sign language) that the ball was kicked too far away, no SPA. That was an important moment because he proved that his decisions were *logical*, rather than based on "game management." That made it easier on him.
DeleteYes! I was amazed by how well he handled the dissenting Portuguese players after the halftime whistle. Initially, the players looked aggressive/upset. But by the end, they all walked away much calmer, and if I recall correctly one player even gave Tello a pat on the back.
DeleteLet me join you in complimenting Tello's performance in regard to these little moments which ensured his control over the match was kept to the very end. I have to say I'm really satisfied with his performance overall.

Tello demonstrated how a referee should go unnoticed, not be the center of attention and intervene only when necessary. With good movement, he called 24 fouls, being very precise and not calling small fouls, and always allowing play flow. He was impeccable at 45+1 when he dismissed a request for a Portuguese penalty when #8 fell exaggeratedly due to a slight hold without any consequence. In regards to discipline, he had only 3 cautions, curiously Moroccan #21 was cautioned at 90 + 1 ', and 1 minute later he saw a second caution and the consequent red for challenging straight-legged with studs. He had absolute control, he was respected, and had credibility. A consecration performance for his international future. Very good CHADE and no work for BRAILOVSKY, completing the praiseworthy work of the trio.
Overall Tello have good performance to handle this match,, very smart calm. No big mistake, allow play continue. Only small mistake for me, when injury time he forgot the player had received a yellow card before, so he had to issue a red card

DeleteIt was very stupid of the player to challenge in that manner having just been cautioned. A player already cautioned should not have carte blanche to infringe on the Laws of the Game just because most referees are preconditioned to not send anybody off.
