  1. Unfortunately they're not, only the UCL POs are given to the official broadcasters and considered a part of the actual tournament

It seems he will says goodbye in the Final of Saudi Super cup.

    2. If that's the case then one of the tougher match will he have to end his career.

But he'll have his countrymen in Ronaldo,Otavio,Jesus,Castro,Neves so language barrier should not be a problem . 😀

    3. Saudi association formally announced Soares Dias as the referee about twenty minutes ago (lmn: Ribeiro, P. Martins; var: T. Martins, Malheiro; 4th is local).

Some words on his career after the match, unlike the semifinals I'm free this afternoon and plan on watching the game.

  3. Kavanagh is also in the First Group, so it is a very normal appointment and not neccesarily a replacement for Brooks.
However it doesn't currently look like he's a candidate for Elite.

  4. It's reported, that today match Torpedo-BELAZ - Neman in Belarusian league is the last match for Kulbakov, he is also retiring...

  5. About all the appointments made during this summer for the preliminary rounds of the three club competitions, it's interesting to point out that no women were appointed as main referees. That's very particular after some female referees joined men's categories. At least a pair of assignments would have been expected.
It seems that after a focus on women's officiating in men's game by committee, started with Frappart in Super Cup, now the trend is rather over, at least for UEFA, while FIFA continues regularly to make such choices even for Men's tournament. The fact that there were no women called for EURO is another signal of that.
Still about the same argument, it went quite unnoticed, but it seems as Monzul has indeed retired.

    1. To be honest, it is also unclear to me what philosophy FIFA pursued at the Olympic tournament by nominating male referees for women's matches and vice versa - but only in the group stage. I had actually expected this exchange to continue in the knockout phase, up to the possibility of appointing a female referee for the men's gold medal match. An Olympic tournament would have been the best way to send such a "political" signal. In the group stage, however, there was no real need for such exchanges (und largely unnoticed by the public).

    2. It is not true. S. Frappart was appointed for Slovan Bratislava - Struga in the 1-st preliminary round of Champions League.

    3. Definitely an unconventional game for German football, with so many cards!

      Delete
    4. Quite challenging game for Stieler. Most cards were given for unsporting behaviour (dissent, delaying the restart, altercations).

      Delete
    5. I was happy with Stielers performance. The RC was a very good spot and then he kept his strict line regarding unsporting behaviour during the whole match. But he issued many cards in his quite unique style, explaining a lot to the players. There also was an early YC for Xabi Alonso, which Stieler kind of prepared with a long talking to the Leverkusen coach before issueing the card and therefore preventing emotional reactions.
And what was nice to see: also in tense moments, sometimes there was a smile on Stielers face.

If that was his last ever game, then Soares Dias can be absolutely content happy with how he crossed the line: good performance, strong leadership of the game and consistent disciplinary, only question mark is the probable/possible foul before the game's opening goal (same app?).

Soares Dias changed his style, how he approached the games, quite a bit over the course of his Elite career (lanyard, to loose whistle, to lanyard, and then finally the finger grip which suited him really well imo!) and ultimately in the most recent period, 2022-, presented an interesting dichotomy: his management skills and the way he carried himself were (to me) even TOP elite level, but his technical accuracy was not quite so good.

This was quite evident during the Euro even: more of a struggling appearance in Poland-Netherlands, but Austria-Turkey was simply very good and one of the best performances in the tournament. He could easily have refereed a fourth game in Germany and a pity that UEFA immediately (deliberate word choice!) after his R16 game decided that he would handle no further matches.

There were some questions about his Conference League final appointment but, especially considering he reffed it well, I’d say it was a deserved call based on his whole career as an elite referee. If the information is correct, then Soares Dias finished on surely a pretty satisfying 2024 for him; all the best for the future!

    1. Ah and on a less holistic level, about today's game: it was competitive match, but at a very similar level to Scharer's R.Madrid-Atalanta, so not more than normal difficulty. The trophy was a very big deal there even quite recently -- I remember well the January/2020 edition which was a VERY challenging match for Danny Makkelie -- but the match today had a rather different feel. Still!

      To underline the point:
      Jan/2020 Super Cup - 41 fouls in 90min
      Aug/2024 Super Cup - 20 fouls in 90min

      Delete
    2. Thanks for the clips, will watch them carefully later on.
No evident clues of his retirement after final whistle, we know that today we can expect everything about that, even after an announcement. But if confirmed, indeed we can even fully explain his appointment for Conference Leagul, giving him a final before retirement (possible he had already said that to committee some months ago), and it would be a very similar choice like Del Cerro Grande on previous season.

      Delete
    3. One very final remark :D additional time calculation was like more like 2000s football than modern times: okay at the end of the second half it was common sense to minimise (2') but after soooo many stops in the first half, we had... 3'. It could have been even treble that in reality. Given the close relationship FIFA-SAFF this seemed a further signal that Soares Dias might be at the end, not caring for guidelines etc.

  9. Karasev will referee Gomel - BATE Borisov as part of the exchange program between Belarusian and Russian FAs. It was reported, that Belarusian referees earlier was in Russia to get some training with VAR, and possibly someone from Belarus will get a match in Premier League or 2nd division soon.

  10. FC "Kryvbas" applied to UEFA with a request to replace the Turkish referee Arda Kardeşler appointed for the play-off match of the Conference League 2024/2025 "Kryvbas" Kryvyi Rih, Ukraine - "Betis" Sevilla, Spain, which will be held next Thursday, August 22 at city of Kosice, Slovakia.

We have learned that this referee was officiating a friendly match between Russia and Serbia on 03/21/2024 in Moscow, Russia. Because of this, we consider it inadmissible to involve Arda Kardeshler in officiating a match involving a Ukrainian football club

    ReplyDelete

    1. Interesting, I found this one as strange appointment in the context of how UEFA is indeed working now (but let's clarify: for me no problems, all officials should be allowed to referee all teams). Turkish referees and venues, like Hungarian, are indeed treated very particularly with assignments for Belarus teams. If UEFA does that, then a Turkish assignment for Ukrainian team can sound strange. But yes, we must only wish that this situation will end soon...

      Delete

    2. These Ukrainians are so rude that they too should be banned from international competitions.

      Delete
    3. Rude? They have absolutely valid reasons to complain in this situation. I don't know Arda Kardesler, may be he is a Putin supporter or may be he just loves money too much but either way it doesn't look nice.

    4. Great example. They think they have absolutely valid reasons to demand everything from everybody , and everyone who disagree with them is, of course, Putin supporter, and can be insulted and abused in any possible way.

    1. It's one of them. Live, you can see a defender close on the right, and very quickly after the foul everyone else is back. On the replay, clear no other defender is covering and it's DOGSO. Good OFR. I also really like how Chris Kavanagh stepped back, told everyone to stop surrounding him and called the captain towards him to explain his initial decision... textbook

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Sorry, I don't have the red card for CFR. By the way, the president from CFR Cluj was very harsh about Novak Simovic style in this game. First time it was a penalty appeal by CFR from an elbow in the stomach, but he didn't whistled. After two minutes the ref whistled a foul attack against CFR, when it was shoulder vs shoulder, and he broke the VAR protocol. Also, he said that the serbian referee often was appointed in the Cyprus champion and UEFA should be avoided this situation.

    1. Clear RC. Very surprised VAR didn’t intervene here (also very surprised the original decision was a YC)…

      Delete
    2. VAR intervened, the referee confirmed YC. It's a clear RC looking at how player enters the challenge with both legs, absolutely, he knows that he can endanger opponent's safety. I think the only small argument for talking about YC, but stll a mistake if you ask me, is only the exact point of impact and how much player suffered the injury, but this shouldn't be relevant for issuing such clear red card...

      Delete
    3. VAR did intervene, referee just didn't follow the advice :) Indeed I guess you can, even if I don't understand Welsh, hear how sure the commentator is about this being a red card and then his reaction when Hamiti upholds his decision...

      Delete
    4. Surely even if the player missed the opponent it would still be a RC for SFP? Just as well it had no bearing on the match with TNS winning 3-0.

    1. The video works here. Well, we must give up. If this is not a violent conduct, I definitely don't know what a player should do to be sent off... this is clearly a VC also according to modern UEFA guidelines about intensity and trying to avoid red cards at all cost... unacceptable mistake by Belgian VAR.

  19. In the 20' minute of Lens - Panathinaikos, Hungarian referee Gergő Bogár was called to OFR for assessing a possible straight RC.
    Here a picture:
    https://ibb.co/mcMcgxz
It was in my opinion an accidental stepping on opponent who was lying down (the player couldn't be aware of him before).
Very long analysis, the referee was clearly unsure. Then, he decided for the RC. These situations are always controversial because in my opinion you must be sure that the player acts in full disregard of opponent, but this wasn't the case, I think, and the most common mistake by referees (and VARs), still in my opinion of course, is to think that just this kind of contact should be always punished by a RC.

Here the video, to explain better my opinion, but I think it's clear, when opponent started with tackle, the player was already running very close to him so he couldn't know about this action and he couldn't stop definitely in the right time.

01:00 First Penalty looks correct decision for the unfair upper contact by defender, Croatian referee needed VAR for assessing the red card for DOGSO, he had given YC, maybe thinking about a genuine attempt to play ball or SPA
02:00 Second Penalty, handball, whistled live, looks correct, I think player was booked for SPA
02:55 Third Penalty, another handball, again detected live.

    1. And another VAR intervention in the very last minute of the game for the last goal scored by home team, wrong offside flag by AR1.

OFR for penalty, should be for the situation on the goal line with keeper bringing down attacker, totally missed live by referee, as you can see. Also, penalty repeatedfor the extremely blatant infringment by defender who then participated in the action, impeding attacker to reach ball after the missed penalty.

Lincoln - Larne, honestly the 0-1 should have been detected by AR1, one can't believe the goal was missed and the officials needed VAR.
I'm always at assistant referees side, but in this case... a must see, even if ball was quick in the net, too evident.
