  1. There are too many mistakes and an update may be coming soon. Especially in the Laws of the game section

  2. I saw that an English journalist indicated today that according to his sources, Michael Oliver will officiate the final of the CL.

Let's wait until Monday to see if it's true.

  3. SL BENFICA vs SPORTING CP
    Referee: João Pinheiro
Assistant Referees: Bruno Jesus, Luciano Maia
    Fourth Official: Gustavo Correia
    VAR: André Narciso, Paulo Brás

    Highlights:
    https://files.fm/u/cgm5ajpcbq

It is definitely better to watch highlights as the whole game was extremely tense but here are the Key Match Incidents:
17' PAI tripping, rather not enough for a penalty
    22' Possible 2YC BEN30 for SPA handball
25' PAI pushing, again not enough
38' Goal disallowed for a foul by attacker; correct, good use of delayed defensive FK
41' PAI tripping, some contact exists but difficult to assess if it was enough to fall like that
44' PAI handball (no handball at all) and RC to Benfica's team member
45+1' Potential RC BEN10 for throwing the ball at the referee (unfortunately no replay was shown)
48' PAI tripping - attacker wants to use the negligible contact, missed offside and attacker's foul prior to that
    68' PAI tripping, nothing serious
    83' possible 2YC SPO42 for SPA/reckless, possible 2YC BEN30 for dissent
90+3' YC BEN10 for reckless tackle, possible RC for SFP/VC?

    Disciplinary:
07' - possible YC SPO6 for DtR, mobbing by BEN3 - whole scene should've been managed in a stronger way in order to set the tone
    10', 22', 28' - possible YC BEN11 for dissenting behaviour
15' - YC BEN30 for SPA tripping, mandatory
    19' - YC SPO42 for DtR, mandatory
20' - possible YC BEN44 for reckless charging, difficult to spot the real nature of the challenge live
22' - possible 2YC BEN30 for SPA handball, it would have been too harsh in such a game
24' - possible 2YC BEN30 for mobbing after PAI, again you won't see it given in such a game
44' - possible YC BEN10 for SPA impeding, RC Benfica's team member for dissent
45+1' - possible YC or RC BEN10 for throwing the ball at the referee
54' - YC SPOGK for time wasting, very good
60' - YC BEN61 for reckless tackle, mandatory
    68' - wrong play-on call by AR1 - missed YC BEN4 for SPA tripping
70' - missed step on ankle by SPO20, YC BEN17 for SPA - mandatory
73' - missed YC SPO72 for reckless step on foot
83' - good no 2YC SPO42 for alleged SPA, of course difficult to send BEN30 for (another) dissent as well
90+1' - missed YC SPO26 for SPA interfering with GK
90+3' - YC BEN10 for reckless tackle, in the old times it would have been a RC for SFP/VC

I think it was an overall good performance from Pinheiro given the amount of incidents to assess through the whole game. Most importantly, key match incidents were assessed correctly. Regarding disciplinary, I think it would be optimal to slow down the game and issue some public warnings at some incidents instead of 'letting it go'. Too much tolerance of dissent and mobbing - Di María and Otamendi (captain) did everything and escaped any punishment for their behaviour. Of course, it was difficult to expect a 2YC to the captain for dissent but Pinheiro could have managed it better, imo, but we know his laidback, phlegmatic style.

    1. 17' Not a penalty, not enough to call it.
22' Not a mandatory YC for SPA, because not a clear recipient of the ball.
25' Would be rather a soft call, but not wrong, nevertheless better not to whistle.
38' Very evident foul. Also, it was easy to understand that a goal was about to be scored, and so a very good delayed whistle.
41' Nothing for me, correct decision. I think a penalty would have been wrong call, but big discussions for VAR in case of whistle by referee.
44' No handball indeed, very good assessment, bench was too much excited, good to see somebody being sent off.
45'+1 Eh, very borderline, this was surely a reaction against referee and at least YC was mandatory. Possible RC if referee thinks this was unacceptable (missing replay to say more), but I noticed that when players have such reactions (throwing balls to the officials) nobody dares to issue a severe punishment...
48' Not a penalty, once again a good assessment with a clear gesture by referee.
      68' Nothing here.
83' I don't see a SPA, card possible for reckless, but we know there can be a certain tolerance, wouldn't call this one a mistake, but more doubts than the other incidents for sure. Then, about the protests, we know how it works...
90'+3 Very dark YC, this is the classic example where in old football, you could have easily sent off a player because only target was to bring down opponent without any interest on ball. Applying this criterion, RC would be OK, but today we "must" look at point of contact, intensity and so... not a mistake by Portuguese referee, but in case of RC VAR shouldn't have intervened. Referee very aware here, coming immediately with the card.

An extremely challenging for the Portuguese, looking also at the standings of Primeira Liga, but in the end with final score nothing changed. I think he was very good and honestly, with all that attempts to win a penalty by both sides, maybe even excellent. Allowing a certain physical play and staying in the background as we know him from UEFA competition (not a referee who makes the communication with players an important key for him, but it can work as long as regular performances are displayed). To me, he is still missing something in terms of interaction and maybe for this reason he is not still pushed by committee at the very top of Elite, but maybe he can improve. We will see.

  5. OT: @Chefren, what can you tell us about Gianluca Aureliano? Very safe referee in Serie A but not many games this season. What is his status?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Referee who has always remained in a veil of ambiguity for a long time. This year he will be dismissed to become VAR PRO from next year, he is one of the very good elements in the role.
Old scool referee, very harsh in disciplinary approach, with a clear attitude to issue easy red cards for violent conducts.
His big problem was about physical condition.
He definitely doesn't run but walk on the pitch.
Not good for modern refereeing. Given that he can take correct decisions, this seems not enough. Most of times he has a too oldish style, with more than phlegmatic gestures and movements (if you understand what I mean), but this definitely doesn't seem enough.
If you love referees who go strictly by book, you can appreciate his style. But his time is now over, as said..
For some years used with too much ambiguity by Rocchi, getting serie B anonimous games and then after that even big clashes in serie A, like Roma - Atalanta a couple of seasons ago. But in the end he was never excellent in the medium - long time...

      Delete
    2. Thank you Chefren. I like style of Aureliano but agree that it is old fashioned. I also like the referee La Penna. What is his status?

      Delete
    3. Very good referee, unluckily he had some troubles in past years and he was suspended after some checks on xpenses refunds. The story is very long, also other referees were involved, he had a rather long suspension, but he faced it and he was back. In my opinion, years ago, he should have become an international referee, but due to this and other circumstances, he didn't have opportunity. Now treated like a very experienced NO FIFA official, he has the full trust by Rocchi's committee and he can officiate all games, including big matches. Surely a referee you can like if you follow him, but as for today, he could have definitely achieved more in his career.

    2. Wouldn't be the first case, Collina got the UEFA Cup final in 2004 after refereeing CL final in 1999

    3. Bjorn Kuipers
      UEL final 2014
      UCL final 2015
      UEL final 2018 (second time)

    4. The choice of Kuipers for his second Europa League final in 2018 represented the lowest point of Collina's management, who left shortly after that in favor of Rosetti.
But overall, the management of Collina has been excellent if compared to the one of his compatriot that started in 2018.

    5. This year Europa League final is by far the most important one from the last many years. Maybe ever. The team who will win will play in the UCL next season while the looser will have a totally failed season finishing right above the relegation line in their domestic league. The stake is huge, Marciniak would be a sensible and excellent choice for this game.

      Delete
  7. So if this is true, the SF referees can have a final... With Marciniak in EL, I would say Zwayer for Conference and the fight between Oliver and Kovacs for CL... Considering Peljto as fourth official in the CL or EL final, rewarding his excellent season…Or why not the Nations final for him? taking into account that he is not going to the FCWC and the final will take place on June 8, and I don't know if the referees for the FCWC will be available on that date... He would be an excellent alternative.

    ReplyDelete
  8. It would be refreshing if UEFA made final appointments based on the semi-final pool of referees.

Kovacs, Letexier and Peljto were absent in the semis and were instantly reported as final candidates, while exactly these 3 names had an underwhelming performance in the QF IMO.

Kovacs had 2 OFRs. Peljto’s performance was also questionable with a clear holding not punished. And enough has been said and written about Letexier, also domestically.

  10. @diego612

You are probably right here but it is not correct against Peljto if he not get Conference final. Such great season without crucial mistakes and no club world cup and now it looks like no final and only 4th referee in EL final is very strange.

Marciniak for me best referee together with Turpin but very strange that he got EL final.

But mostly surprised with no Peljto for Conference as every expert here together with Euro Soccer and Chefren was more or less sure about him.

  14. I'm confused by J18 - UEFA says that a delay in the decision "would indicate that they have received information from the VAR", which is prohibited.
Surely the UEFA refereeing committee should know conclusively whether they did communicate with VAR or not? And if so, surely there should be sanctions for the referees concerned beyond a mere talking to? This would be a blatant violation of UEFA rules and the LOTG.

  18. Some refereeing-related statements by Gianluigi Buffon in an interview he released.

    1) About the very famous penalty decision by Oliver in Real - Juventus and his interview against the English referee:

"Now that a few years have passed, I am ashamed of what I said. I was representing the country, I was the captain. But I must also say that if I could go back I would say it all again. At that moment, it wasn't just a lost match, something special had happened before: an epic comeback, in an epic stadium, with a team that had shown a special character and unity, we were crazy and dreamers. To this day, I still don't know why I was sent off, the anger in the interview was also for that".

    2) About the sending off of Zidane in 2006 final:

"I think we can say that In 2006 I was the VAR for Zidane's headbutt [he laughs]. My reaction and my run towards the area where incident had occurred. surely made the referees realize that something had happened. They will never say it, but the action was reviewed on TV by them. Everything that had happened was seen only by me on the pitch".

    3) About Byron Moreno and South Korea, 2002

""We understood that the media had influenced the popular sentiment. Everyone saw in Moreno a real enemy who made us leave. In the end, it was probably our fault, but he refereed in an ignoble manner. We left the airport among the applauses".

  20. Challenging moments for Kavanagh in very fiesty match between Chelsea and Manchester United.

    Couple of instances and key moments;

    62'
Given penalty then changed decision with VAR.It's clear that George falls before contact with Onana.
Should he seen YC for dive?

    69'

YC given to Diallo for clear dive.
    Different approach for both situations.

    90+3

Dangerous foul with studs going directly on Chelsea player.
    YC only issued.
    Maybe RC was an option?

      69' Simulation
      https://streambug.org/cv/91e1ec

90'+3 YC for reckless, possible RC for SFP
      https://streambug.org/cv/784f7d

Without explanation why penalty was not given in 28'. It's incredible that in England VAR have totally different opinions about what is punishable and what not. In this case, the arm is the open one, increasing body's volume. Should have been an OFR. Not even communicated that VAR was checking... the same Kavanagh as FIFA referee should whistle this one in UEFA games, but once again it's impossible to find consistency. However, I would be really curious about Rosetti opinion, believe me...

About the rest, one can agree with the removed penalty, but as you said, beter to given then simulation as player clearly tried to use the situation to get penalty. In 69' Kavanagh decided for simulation, differenly from previous penalty area incident because, in my opinion, he had free view and he made the direct assessment (you can see that live). So good spot. The problem with VAR is that most of times, when YC for simulation after OFR can be given, referees are not prone to that, they don't rewatch the situation at monitor like they do while officiating the game. This is the main problem for me, rather staying passive at VAR advice and confirming the reason for the call without adding a "personal view" on the scene. Of course, this is not always valid, but I observed this is the clear trend. Referee renounce in understanding more about a revieewd incident in most of the OFRs.

90'+3 can be SFP but one must admit, even if the fouling player was partially aware, opponent joins the challenge in a very unexpected and quick manner, contributing in part to the very unlucky circumstance. Red card could have been easily given, but you have arguments to say OK YC. Rather a very lazy approach by Kavanagh when running into the scene and before issuing YC, this is something I will never understand about English refereeing. AR also in good position to say something to Kavanagh in case.

      Delete
    2. Handballs like the one in minute 28 haven't been given in the Premier League all season. Webb and PGMOL changed the guidance before the season because fans/media/players all thought too many penalties were be given (I think). Makes things harder though for the VAR's who do UEFA matches as they have to judge handballs differently from one game to the other.

      Delete
    3. Handball from very short distance, no time to move arm, and not above the head. Not really even a talking point, it's never handball in England and those in England are very content with that.
The YC showing procedure late on... this is what Kavanagh is one of the very best at. He always takes a moment to think, replay it in his mind, and has a chat with his team before showing the card in this situation, rather than guessing quickly and looking a fool afterwards. This is very much encouraged here and Kavanagh is the master at it. Very well done!

      Delete
    4. Blocking a shot = taking a risk! If you block a shot/pass with an open arm, the only option is a penalty. Argument like 'no time to move arm' in case of deliberately blocking a shot/pass is simply not valid, imo.

      Delete
    5. Kavanagh has the personality of an unplugged toaster oven. He inspires absolutely zero confidence that he is aware of what's going on.

"One of the very best..." "Master." "Very well done." There must be a familial relation here.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. DOGSO for me. Haaland is straight in on goal, it's Hendersons touch which puts it wide

      Delete
    2. I think it was such a clear DOGSO that it has potential to be one of the biggest VAR misses in history in terms of impact and how obvious the decision was - if Palace win the cup.

      Delete
    3. Honestly, once again it's incredible if one tries to understand how a VAR works in a English game...

      Delete
    4. Haaland pushes the ball away from "straight in on goal" before Henderson touches the ball away. I expected the red card but maybe there is something else (offside, other) that prevented the OFR

      Delete
    5. It is reported that the explanation given to the broadcasters (BBC, ITV) by the VAR centre, was that 'The direction in which Erling Haaland was going made it possible, but not an obvious goal scoring opportunity.'

      Delete
    6. Palace won, Henderson became MOTM with penalty save and many important saves. Unfortunately it was Man City and not Man Utd or Liverpool that have solid fans. Absolutely nonsense if they said it was not obvious goal scoring opportunity, come on Henderson was the goalie and the last man, 2 variables vs 1 variable, it was Haaland againts the empty net.

Missed clear cards, then he had to send off coaches... just wanted to play on on everything without applying LoTG.
Also, whistled in crucial moments when h could have waited for VAR.
OFR in the very final minute it's a very interesting one.
Not the kind we see often in serie A!
It was clear the VAR was aware this could have been extremely crucial.
Also, many coaches sent off in several games in the last minutes, also in this case, no consistency by Rocchi team.
Never a red card in a many games and now all in one matchday. OK, there were exaggerated protests, but if you make an analysis about all the serie A season, you can't find any logic.
Let alone the red card in Roma - Milan (fully correct) for violent conduct, if compared to Coppa Italia final... there would ba a poem to write after today honestly!

  27. Agree with everyone about Serie A referees this season.

It is very strange . Rizzoli,Tagliavento,Rocchi, Orsato etc had from 2005-2023 averaged 5.3 cards per game, some of lower rated referees even almost 6 cards per game under this period.

if you check whoscored.com statistics for serie A referees this season it is incredible. The avarega only 3.5 cards per game.

Doveri only 2.3 cards per game and add that he had massive games.

Di Bello 2.6 cards per game

    Zufferli 2.8 cards per game

    Marinelli 2.9 cards per game

    Mangianello 3.2 cards per game

    Sacchi 3.3 cards per game

    Sozza 3.5 cards per game

    Mariani 3.7 cards per game

No little sample 15 or more games

First time ever that more cards in England and Germany then serie A.

Games were not bad as both fight for title,Europe places and relegation bottle was alive in to the end. But referees has been super lenient and allowed all protest and unsportsmanlike behavior . And then is is no surprise that they do not get big games in Europe even if boss is Italian.

Something must happen for next season because this looks very bad for image of the great Serie A.
