Who will officiate Champions League and Europa League finals? Make your choice.

KO stages of both Champions League and Europa League are over.  Now it is time to predict and discuss about the referees who will be appointed to handle the finals.

We will have the following games:

UCL
Real Madrid CF (ESP) - Liverpool FC (ENG)
UEL
Olympique de Marseille (FRA) - Club Atlético de Madrid (ESP)

Make your choice by answering to our polls. We have decided to include all the Elite referees, ruling out only the officials from the same nations of the teams qualified for the finals, Szymon Marciniak (injured), Martin Atkinson and David Fernández Borbalán, who already announced their retirements. A deep analysis about the candidates will follow on next days - hopefully before the official announcement by UEFA.

Who will officiate CL final Real Madrid - Liverpool?

Deniz Aytekin (GER)
Felix Brych (GER)
Cüneyt Çakır (TUR)
Jonas Eriksson (SWE)
Ovidiu Hațegan (ROU)
Sergey Karasev (RUS)
Viktor Kassai (HUN)
Pavel Královec (CZE)
Björn Kuipers (NED)

  1. I went for the couple Mazic-Rocchi. Not sure in which order, but I think they’ll be the chosen ones, even if Brych...

  4. One year ago, the announcement about final referees was made one day after the last games of EL (semifinals second legs), so we can already expect the news tomorrow.

      EL Mazic, FO Kralovec.

    3. Soham, he will handle an Ekstraklasa game tomorrow! So he was unable for Thursday but is able for Friday. Strange.

    4. I am not saying for one minute it was intentional, but I think Marciniak by pulling out of the Semifinal might have just have booked his ticket for Lyon...

      Delete
    5. Well, maybe Marciniak was "injured" for semifinal, but will be "fit" for the final!
Having in mind his whole career so far, for me he deserves EL final! One nightmare match can not change my opinion. I just hope he won't have another in the future.
So, if Marciniak is available (the poll should be changed), my vote would go for him instead of Rocchi for EL final.

      Delete
    6. @Ray Maybe he wanted to avoid an European SF because he is just returning from an injury and may not be at 100%... Or maybe he was never appointed at all and the whole gossip was cooked by Polish media, who knows what exactly it is :/

    7. Soham, it was Polish FA that informed about a CL/EL semi-final for him.

And yes, he said in a radio that he would have been ready for 90% and consulted it with Collina. They concluded that it will be better to give it up due to upcoming WC.

So, he can handle Polish Ekstraklasa game while being 90% ready?

    8. God knows... Maybe he wasn't sure at the time of appointments in SFs??

  6. It will not happen but I would like to see Danny Makkelie in EL Final, would be absolutely deserved according to recent performances (although I suppose Collina does not want to repeat mistakes (aka Oliver); anyway, he's young and and will have a lot of opportunities in nexy years!

Rocchi for CL final and Mazic for EL

  7. Spanish reporter Isaac Fouto says that the preferred options by UEFA are Mazic and Marciniak.

From my point of view, I would not appoint Rocchi in UEL and think it would be unfair to give him UCL final. His performances in KO stage have been free from crucial mistakes, but that does not mean they have been good enough to grant him such honor. There were mistakes in Real Madrid - PSG regarding card management and foul detection, and some of these mistakes happened again tonight specially in the card management area, IMO. Also, I do not like the idea of appointing a referee in two consecutive KO stage rounds, even if UEFA doesn't really care. So that would rule Turpin out too.

All in all, my appointments would be:
UCL Final referee: Mazic. 4th: Rocchi.
UEL Final referee: Marciniak if available. Otherwise, Orsato (mainly due to lack of names). 4th: Oliver (if UEFA considers his performance in Madrid as good, then it is a fair reward for everything he has had to go through since then and some sort of apology for the appointment).

    1. And Mazic, with just four matches (no one of these in the KO stage), deserves it more than Rocchi? Maybe in terms of palmares but, sorry, Rocchi deserves it more than Mazic for what has been showed this season.
This is clear and evident, it is not an opinion...

      Delete
    2. EL final is definitely more “open”, due to the fact that Mazic appointments this season have been quite strange and i would not exclude a “surprise name”!

      Delete
    3. Yes, he does. It is clear that UEFA has been saving him for something. As he has had less matches, of course he has had less risk of failing. As I said, Rocchi has not been that good in my opinion to justify that appointment. And please, I would ask to rethink your words before posting. It is of course your opinion, not a fact set in stone. You think that Rocchi has been better and deserves it. I think differently.

      Delete
    4. In European competitions Mazic is much bigger name than Rocchi! Why?
      1. He has/will have two WCs (2014 and 2018), and Rocchi will have his first.
      2. He has EC in 2016.
      3. He refereed Confederations Cup final.
      4. He officiated more important matches in his career.
      5. Both of them refereed Super Cup final.

Last year, Brych was more than average. Almost noone on this blog mentioned him as a candidate for CL final. But, he got it as a reward for his career, and Mazic got nothing, absolutely nothing (if Bayern progressed to the final, then Skomina would get Cl and mazic EL final - I strongly believe). This year (as last year) Mazic was very good, consistent. No significant mistakes whatsoever. By his performances he deserves CL final (and for his whole career). I don't know why he didn't get more high profile matches this and last year, but I believe he was saved.
You know, at EC 2016 Mazic was very good, and was an option even for the final (3 refs stayed till the end of the tournament were Clattenburg, Kassai and Mazic). He wasn't even a FO, but as a reward for not getting anything he got Super Cup final and most probably Conf Cup final.
So, he has experience with being forgotten! He was "forgotten" last year, so I think he will be rewarded this year - that's my feeling.

      Delete
    5. Brych was candidate no. 1 for the final but we all didn't mention him because he was supposed to be at the U-20 WC during the CL final...

      Delete
    6. If he was candidate no. 1, why he was appointed for U-20 WC? You don't find it strange? How can you put on the list for U-20WC someone who is your first pick for the most important match of the year?

      Delete
    7. Because there was a team called Bayern Munich... As soon as it got eliminated, Brych was finalised!!

  8. Mazic in CL, Cakir in EL

  9. Mazic for CL + Brych
    Çakir for EL + Orsato

  10. Marciniak for EL final will be the most undeserved appointment of recent times after Rizzoli's CL final in 2013... I can understand Marciniak had a good overall career and everything but he and his total team had a shocker at Wembley in CL R16 and that should mean this European season must be over... Plain and simple... Anything other than that will be violation of the performance principle and other referees will have every right to be disappointed with such a choice!!

    ReplyDelete
  11. Inofficial information from Uefa- Mazic for CL final 2018.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Mazic - Rocchi will be the pair in my opinion; Due to the fact that Rocchi has just officiated UEL semifinal, he could be ruled out fro EL final.
Turpin, Marciniak as 4th officials. Or maybe Marciniak in UEL and Mazic in UCL

    ReplyDelete
  13. BTW about Marciniak, we know the policy of committee about appointments after an injury, they go very carefully, they don't appoint immeditely for important games. So it should be clear that the Polish wont appear in EL final this season. Otherwise, it would make no sense. I didn't include him in the polls just for this reason. In case of appointment, this would be more than strange...

    ReplyDelete

    1. Yes... They waited at least one month before appointing Kuipers after returning from injury... And this is a major final so such risks should be avoided!!

    1. To my opinion a very high risk based on the experience of how tense and what happened in both CL semi-finals (and KO stage on general)...

      Delete
    2. Not very risk, he had officiated both teams in last 2-3 years with top level of refereeing. I would only blame Collina for not giving Mazic any game in KO in CL.

      Delete
  15. Mazic- CL
Orsto- EL (in the poll I voted Hategan because he's romanian)

Initially I thought Rocchi will get EL final and Orsato a SF. Honestly, I was surprised to see the name of Rocchi in Madrid. But wednesday night I watched on italian TV some replays of referee's mistakes during this season of CL (games from KO stage). Rocchi was there with (at least) 1 penalty not awarded in Real Madrid- PSG. I remembered that his perormance in that game was not too good. Probably that was the reason he got only a SF.

Otherwise, there were a unacceptable number of huge mistakes in that season of CL (KO stage).
It's a disastrous management of referees by Collina. After 8 years as chief of european refereeing he has only 5-6 referees who are capable to whistle any game in Europe. He sent those (best) referees to CL semifinals but they (Cakir and Skomina) delivered unacceptable performances. What to say more if even best referees in Europe make such mistakes...

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Again its not Collinas fault if referee is making mistakes. As elite referees with very big experence they should never allow to happen what happened in those SFs. How you can blame Collina for sending best referees and referee fails?

      Delete
    2. I blame him because he has only 5-6 options available for this kind of games. This is the consequence of the fact that during all these years he used always same names for the most important games. There are 25 Elite referees but most of these are not used in important games. They are Elite only on paper.

      Delete
    3. Agree on that. He should give others a chance to prove that they deserve important games.

      Delete
    4. I think at least every referee who is going to world cup should be able to handle those big games in CL

      Delete
    5. The Elite referees are humans; neither super-humans nor being artificial intelligence to make every decision 100% correct. And the humans do make mistakes even well trained Elite referees. In one interview Skomina mentioned there are approximately 30 cameras on the stadium per CL match and 5 (6) pairs of referees’ eyes can’t beat the cameras and could not see each incident on the pitch in every possible angle as cameras do.

      Delete
    6. More that that: I blame Collina because he even thought to give a SF to Marciniak after a disastrous performance in Tottenham- Juventus. PLC stated that only referee's performances count but it seems this is not true.

When a referee (from that group of 5-6 referees) knows for sure that he will whistle the big matches because there aren't other options probably his level on concentration decreased. They know no matter what happen they will whistle the important games of season.

PS thas't happens when you send Cakir to whistle a SF after Juventus- Real. That game should have been the last game of the season for Cakir. I was on the stadium and I know very well what my eyes saw (it's not like in TV when you don't have the possibility to see the referee in every moment, that's why referee observers are on the stadium not in front of TV)

      Delete
    7. What (If) Skomina said, I find as excuse. What should older refs said? There were only 6 pairs of eyes, but the man in the middle was the boss, and very often he didn't have any help from ARs in detecting fouls, penalties etc. He was all alone, and ARs were there for signalling offsides and when the ball is out. In most national competitions we still have only 3 refs on the pitch and FO, who can (and should) help sometimes, but unwillingly does so.
I remember several officials back in 1991, when Red Star won European Champions Cup. Semifinal second leg Red Star-Bayern Munich 2-2 (famous own goal from Klaus Aughentaler in 90') was officiated by Swiss Bruno Galler. Outstanding performance - I watched that match 100 times. Then in the final Italian Tulio Lanese - excellent all 120 minutes. In Intercontinental Cup (final) Red Star-Colo Colo 3-0 extraordinary performance by another Swiss Kurt Rothlisberger. Those are live legends.
You can say that today's football is much faster. Well, you can watch Red Star-Bayern on youtube and you will see that this match was 5 times faster than last nights clash in Madrid. In last 10 minutes there were chances on both sides in almost every single attack. It was fast football, and refs were not that well prepared, didn't have audio line or anything that today's officials have. It was much tougher for them. Ok, there were not so many cameras and one couldn't see their mistakes, but still the less that we can expect from the best European (and world) refs is much better performance in so important matches that we saw last three nights (except Rocchi).

    8. @Teo

The level of referees in the past was higher than now. Now we have FIFA referees who are born after 1990. They didn't play/watch/see enough football. They didn't have the time TO LEARN football but they are FIFA referees !!!

  18. About Europa League final one must mention Pavel Královec.
He is now recovering after a not good period, but in terms of experience, among the Elite referees, at moment he has the needed requirements for such assignment. A quite long experience at top level, and Europa League semifinal already in 2012/13.
In case, I think it wouldn't be a too big surprise to see him... but for sure, until a few months ago he was in a very different condition.

    1. Nothing is impossible. He got 2 EL KO matches, one CL KO match and 3 group matches this year... Didn't watch him, but probably he was good when he earned so many appointments. And he officiated Real, Cty, Arsenal, Dortmund, Psg, Tottenham... all the big names.
He wouldn't be my choice, because he is not among top 10 (I would say top 15) European refs at the moment, but he might be surprise for all.

      Delete
    2. Kralovec would be a much better choice than Marciniak at this moment... Marciniak's appointment will be very risky and I wouldn't want to see a repitition of Wembley at Lyon!!

      Delete
    3. Please... let me back Hategan for EL final (despite the fact I'm sure he doesn't have a chance)

He was very good in UEFA competitions this season. That penalty from Northern Ireland- Switzerland was in a FIFA competition and he already payed for that (not like someone else who made 5 mistakes and will still be in Russia)

Hategan didn't have huge games in his career (I don't know why because he already has 10 years as FIFA referee) but, on the other hand, he didn't make huge mistakes in UEFA competitions.
In 2017 he whistled very well the EL semifinal between Manchester United- Celta Vigo. I should also mention a very good performance in WC u17 semifinal between Brazil- England (I watched him on Eurosport).
In 2016 he had a very good Olympic tournament with an outstanding Brazil- Iraq, followed by a semifinal on Maracana (Brazil- Honduras, when Neymar and Gabriel Jesus scored 4 goals). In 2016 he whistled two games at EURO 2016.
In 2015 he whistled a QF in WC u20 in New Zealand (Senegal- Uzbekistan).

So, he already has a more than decent palmares. Excepting that terrible penalty from Northern Ireland- Switzerland you can't remember huge mistakes in his career.

I repeat, I know PLC won't choose him, but let me support him. We don't have a 100% candidate for EL final and I think everyone has the right to sustain his favourite :)

    4. I watched Hategan live in Brazil v England at Kolkata... It was in my hometown

      Delete
    5. He was good in that game ? I think so :)

    6. Yes he was good indeed... I think that's the performance which prompted FIFA to appoint him to the playoff match!!

    7. To add Hategan was absolutely immense in Brazil - Iraq, pure top class performance in a very challenging match, one of the best FIFA refereeings I ever saw.
I really hope one day he can whistle a UEFA Final, but 2018 is not the year IMO.

    8. A sure option for the future, if you ask me.
He could start with 2018 UEFA Super Cup in Tallinn (if not Madrid's derby).

  22. Well, it seems that the vast majority agrees on the CL final (still nothing is certain yet), but the big question seems to be EL final. Anything can happen there.

Concerning Hategan, I don't think he will officiate any final, but wasn't he deserving something more this year? We very often talked about him growing with his two "twin brothers" Karasev and Turpin, as they were the young unexperienced ones at Euro 2016 (Marciniak as well but he was ahead of all of them), and now he ends up with only CL R16 and EL R8, whereas Turpin and Karasev both get EL SF. Isn't it too harsh for the kind of mistake at the qualifiers?

Given that Marciniak seems to be out for injury, Lahoz and Turpin cannot handle EL final, and Collum and Rocchi already got the SF, I would not be surprised to see an experienced referee there. If things had gone differently last year, this would have been a game for Aytekin in my opinion. Oliver and Makkelie should not be put so early under such pressure, I believe.

Final comment: interestingly in 2010 the referee for EL final was Rizzoli, who did not officiate at the world cup one month later. So we shouldn't be surprised if we had a referee that doesn't go at the world cup. Same goes for 2006 (Fandel)

    19. I am from Serbia, everyone here knows that. But that is not important - what does it matters where am I from?
You know, one good performance (with very doubtful PK in 93' - for me it is doubtful) doesn't mean that the ref will be faultless in another match! You have examples as many as you want (Skomina was very good all year, but has a nightmare in semifinal; the same goes to Cakir; also 2 years ago Cakir was excellent in 1st leg semifinal and he was appointed in 2nd leg, too - he whistled PK outside of the box against Bayern (!?)). You cannot judge on only one good performance - Oliver need time, lot of time, he has to proof himself in years to come and hope to get some semifinal first.

      Delete
    20. Having ascertained that Oliver is going to lead the FA cup final, do you not think that an EU final is worth it? I believe that it is even more important !!) and so he won't be able to direct the final EU anyway, I remind you that Oliver has been whistling in Premier for 8 years and that in the last two or three years he has been whistling all the most important TOP Premier matches. Do you think you have a problem doing the EU final? Do you think he lacks experience just because he is 33 years old?
I completely disagree with what you say: "he has to proof himself in years to come and hope to get some semifinal first"
In fact PLC , who is more skilled than me and you, after a few months of Elite sent him to Madrid.
The world is going fast, think that all the referees are equal, that everyone has to do the same training of years and years before getting to a European semifinals is an old and outdated way of thinking. If a young 33-year-old referee is good and fast, put the arrow on him and overtake the others.
This speech, Teo, is not only valid for Oliver, it is valid for all the young referees who are coming, grown up in a world that goes fast and that prepares them differently.
I close by saying one thing, I'm sure that if you asked Oliver which final he would like to whistle, the FA cup or the EU FINAL which one he choose? he would answer me the FA cup. Both for stage and for difficulty. If you have nothing to do that day tuned in to Wembley Stadium and you understand a lot. Hello

    1. Good gesture by colleagues

    2. Because of a controversy over his inappropriate gesture during his last match, he will not receive the trophy of best referee of the season but a trophy of honor for his career.
It was above all a symbolic gesture on the part of his colleagues to support him.
Turpin, who came second in the vote, refused the trophy, so there will be no best referee trophy in league this year.

  28. About the investigation opened by UEFA against Roma President Pallotta, there is something to add. It is reported that he had a direct discussion with UEFA delegate Ronald Zimmermann near the dressing room and he insulted the referee in that occasion maybe adding some words about UEFA.
So, this was a mandatory decision to open an investigation, maybe differently from Juventus. In that case, all players and technical staff talked "only" via TV about that.

  29. The president of the Turkish refereeing committee, Yusuf Namoglu said to the surprise of many that :

"The UEFA committees are very happy with [Cakir’s] performance. We hope he will be the referee for the World Cup final in Russia. He did very well in the semi-final of the champions league and he could have the chance to referee the final too."

"Cakir refereed another Champions League corner and Infantino and Collina trust him a lot because he always delivers."

    1. It's very nice that Çakir has an open and publicly expressed support by the President of the Turkish refereeing committee, which at the same time represents also an informal pressure/lobbying (i.e. direct message to UEFA & FIFA) to appoint Çakir for the finals 😉.

    1. And some background if you are still keeping track :-D

=> Dean Whitestone is an excellent referee for L1 & L2 list, that could have been on PL list IMO, but he wanted to keep his job in the police and to remain a non-professional referee
=> Andy Davies is a solid Championship list referee
=> Keith Stroud is a very good Championship referee, that once was in PL, but is famous for forgetting the LOTG at a match last season.
=> Tony Harrington is a fairly promising Championship list referee, but he makes too many crucial mistakes IMO.
=> Staurt Attwell is a UEFA Second Cat. referee who has made a decent PL season
=> Scott Duncan is a solid Championship referee
=> Bobby Madley is a referee quite pushed by the FA who is in UEFA Second Cat. In spite of making a good 2016/17, Madley has been quite poor this year. He is a referee in the same format as Mike Dean, who is almost always appointed to the crucial FL fixtures year after year, so I am not surprised to read his name here- maybe he can be Dean's "successor".
=> Andy Madley is Bobby's brother and has been one of the best Championship referees for quite a few years. I hope for and generally expect his promotion to the PL list for next season.

Hope someone was interested for that :-D

    2. I only disagree with 1 point out if everything... Stuart Attwell had an even poorer season in PL than even Bobby Madley... His last 4-5 matches are filled with lots of dross and crucial mistakes and he has been terribly inconsistent throughout the season!!

      Delete
    3. One question about Dean Whitestone - Why would he lose police job if he gets promotions? We have few referees that are in the top leagues and are working in the police..

    4. @Soham my coach has known Attwell since he was sixteen so I guess that influenced my opinion ;-). At least whenever I saw him he was good, I think his style is underappreciated in England, compared to what it would be in a different nation.

@Jovan all referees in PL since 2001, and Championship since 2016 and they have to resign their day job.
Webb, Atkinson, Foy, Wiley et al only had ceremonial roles once they joined PL at least as I understand it.
Iain Williamson (from my local association!) was offered a place on PL list, but turned it down because he had an on-off knee injury and he wanted job security (he worked in insurance/sales). So Whitestone is no isolated case- there can be some negative cases of professional refereeing.

    5. @Mikael What I have seen from Atwell in the last couple of seasons, I don't rate him too highly and nor would I bet on him achieving big things in UEFA... I prefer Paul Tierney much more and I think he is a much more consistent performer these days than Attwell... Even in terms of overall approach I prefer Tierney more :)

    6. Thats so sad to hear.. I dont know how much they pay referees in PL but for me its so stupid to tell someone to quit his job for promotion..
