  1. CL KO game debut for Stieler just after his promotion, big signal. Chances to attend EURO for him, I think that Zwayer could start to be worried now, it would be difficult to see three German referees. We will see what committee will decide. Nice to see the Swiss as fourth official.
In Budapest, Trentalange will have his first UEFA duty after his promotion to AIA president, however I find quite strange that Irrati will be AVAR in a Portuguese team, there wouldn't be any problem to send another official from Portugal. Maybe the first signals of EURO appointments by Rosetti? What do you think?

    1. Zwayer would be quite late to start worrying now after the appointments he (didn't) get in group stage. ;)
Swiss 4th official probably forced, if Siebert and Zwayer work in EL this week.
I wonder, whether Martins will get EL. He was Soares Dias' VAR in his recent CL matches and it could explain, why no more Portuguese VAR were available.

      Delete
    2. I don't understand the need for Irrati with Pinheiro (unless Martins or Veríssimo are appointed to EL). Godinho will be able to accompany Martins or Veríssimo on Thursday.
Paulo Soares, the usual AR2 of Soares Dias' team, is infected with Covid-19 (hence the presence of Rodrigues).

  2. Two more CL KO stage debutants. Both not unexpected, but obviously with a different background:
Soares Dias with already 14 CL matches and 10 EL KO matches was already seen as a candidate in previous seasons.
Stieler directly after his promotion to Elite after 8 CL matches and 5 EL KO matches.
Both appointments should confirm, that they have decent chances for an EURO selection.

  3. Vincic, Grinfeld, Stieler and Soares Dias. 4 KO debuts on 8 matches.

One thing is certain. Rosetti has a different strategy on making appointments compared to PLC and Ivan Cornu

    1. What is plc, and is Ivan Cornu ex uefa boss for referees?

      Delete
    2. PLC = Pierlugi Collina.
Yes, Cornu was the head before Collina, almost nobody remember (maybe never heard) his name.

      Delete
    3. Cornu's last major tournament was the 2008 UEFA Euro with the Polish threats against Webb.

Rosetti had the final of that Euro.

      Delete
    4. Cornu was the Head of the UEFA Refereeing Unit, while Collina and Rosetti the Chairmen of the UEFA Referees Committee.

      Delete
    5. True but still Cornu was in charge of the appointments.

After the penalty, the referee decided that the keeper left the line early, but with the intervention of VAR it was withdrawn. The problem is that the defensive player who invaded early blocked the shot from the rebound, which should be punished by nature.

However, VAR did not intervene in it, and it was initially speculated that VAR could not intervene in blocking the shot from the rebound. On Sunday, Van Egmond, head of the KNVB refereeing committee, explained that VAR should have intervened.

Sure, this case seems to be okay with VAR intervening, but it raises the question: How many rebounds the situation will change and VAR will not be able to intervene?

  6. I predicted Grinfeld, Dias, and Manzano will get 3 out of 4 CL games this week. Very glad to see Grinfeld and Dias in CL KO stage as they are fully deserved (especially Dias). Also a bit surprised to see Stieler. I do not think his performance in CL group stage is convincing enough.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I only saw Stieler in Liverpool-Ajax and there he missed two red cards. Not convincing, indeed.

      Delete
    2. Same thoughts for me. Stieler is IMO being pushed too much by committee compared to what he showed this season in CL group stage, e.g. a unconvincing (even rather poor in my book) in Barcelona-Juventus.

      Delete
    3. His promotion to Elite was decided before MD6, as it was reported on the blog, so the assignment for that game was just a reward and his performance (the only very bad for him in recent times at UEFA level) very liikely didn't count at all for committee.
I think that overall his promotion to Elite is deserved, he was already in focus when Zwayer had very good games, then of course it is clear that the troubles of the latter helped him in getting this big chance. I don't know whether now committee thinks he is already referee for EURO, this would be very strong signal against Zwayer.
However, about EURO selection, there would be many things to say... if Zwayer will be ruled out, the same should be clearly for other names, otherwise one couldn't accept that, to be honest. How much Zwayer can be in poor form, he never was so poor like other Elite referees.... to be honest, but for other referees it is easy to keep status because they are not even appointed in big games, they can live in Elite without issues.

      Delete
    4. I fully agree that Stieler is deserved to be promoted, but I would say that he is not the perfect candidate to manage Atlanta-Real Madrid in CL KO stage. For EURO, let's see how will Stieler and Zwayer perform in the next three months. I do not know how many referees will be in EURO, but now I would say neither of them should be in EURO.

    1. Better YC. The ball is going too much to the left side, not towards the goal.

      Delete
    2. 100% RC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Super!

      Delete
  13. 100% correct red card from Stieler. No defenders can reasonably stop the attacker, who has possession, distance and direction – all DOGSO considerations fulfilled. Excellent decision.

    ReplyDelete
  14. IMO YC it should be, RC is mistake

    ReplyDelete
  15. RC for DOGSO by Stieler is the correct decision. Indeed the defender did not expect such a decision but he stopped a clear goal scoring opportunity. The other defender was too far away, goal very near, attacker controlled the ball.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Now correct YC for SPA shown by Stieler.

    ReplyDelete
  17. If you ask me, the DOGSO RC is fully correct.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I think the RC is not right. There are players beside. YC is better. Someone with me?

    1. No player could have prevented the striker shooting on goal. That is a clear RC, nothing else

      Delete
    2. Agree with JR. No chance for the only defender behind the ball to stop the attacker before he shoots

      Delete
    3. I prefer YC here as I don't think the attacker had a true chance are goal with the poor touch of the ball by the attacker. But RC is supportable and not a clear and obvious error

      Delete
    4. The decision is technically correct as no defender was in a position to block the shot. Still, the attacker wasn't central on goal - he had to shoot from pretty small angle as he could control the ball only not far away from the base line. That's why I definately prefer a yellow card here especially when you are fully aware that this decision decides the final outcome of both legs - and, please, just let's not debate that the referee should not care about the final outcome :)

  19. Soares Dias' manner didn't sell it, but he and AR2 did very well to see through a dive in Budapest (27').

  20. Artur Diaz in excellent physical condition, that is impressive.

    ReplyDelete
  21. As I can read here some people disagree with this RC while other ones fully agree, and this has only an explanation: supportable decision, nothing more. Fully correct by VAR to stay silent, this was a choice at full referee's discretion; another referee would have shown YC. I must also add that in Italy there is a certain trend to prefer YC in borderline SPA / DOGSO situations... and some people are astonished by such cards especially when they come early in the game. But I like that, because this means a referee is not afraid of applying LOTG.

    1. All agree with this comment ‘

      Delete
    2. I kind of agree. Maybe there is a difference between what football/teams expect (YC) and what one would expect from the referee taking the right decision in sense of the LotG (RC). I can understand that it does not look like the clearest DOGSO ever but rather like a "technical" DOGSO. My first thought was "well, that should be a RC" and Stieler was very fast in issuing the RC too. The decision is supportable at very least but in my view also the correct (better) one.

      Delete
    3. Exactly.

If there was some top referee with experience, maybe he would have given a YC. But never a clear mistake IMO.

By the way, in Croatia, referee expert commentator (ex FIFA Mario Strahonja) said it is a YC because the defender comes from the middle and makes the attacker push the ball to the left, so no clear path to the goal.

  25. After watching the replay, I feel like this one is 50/50 and all up to the referee's decision. Personally I would prefer YC but I would not argue if it is RC. I like how Stieler showed RC that quickly without any hesitation btw.

    ReplyDelete
  29. My friends if we took the 'ball in direction to the goal' DOGSO principle very strictly half of DOGSO situations could not be deemed as such. Sometimes players have to deflect the ball a bit in order to dribble or anticipate to the (second) last defender but still it's a goal scoring chance because the ball is not going to the corner, just 30º degrees away, and player is still more than expected to head to the goal or shoot once he hipothetically takes the ball again.

If the discussion is about whether ATA11 is the last defender or not, I can't understand the arguments because he's clearly the last one along with GK who can attempt to avoid the goal. No one else.

    ReplyDelete
  30. To be honest, I think Soares Dias should have opened the cards there (74'). A very blatant kicking away of the ball (Dissent/DtR).

This late in the match, it's a good starting thesis anyway, and not punishing this very obvious challenge to the ref's authority decisively is a risk, IMO.

    2. Penalty would have been supportable, no penalty decision is supportable too. In such situations, I prefer the decision to play on as it was still a normal duel in the penalty area, so does the German commentator. Indeed very unfortunate that the attacker is injured, however, it was not really caused by the defender.

      Delete
  33. Monch-Man city 84’ - This situation is not black and white one. 3 minutes waiting for possible OFR is too much for CL like yestarday Ath-Che goal check.

    1. Surprising to hear that. It's (quite clearly) not an obvious mistake.

      Delete
    2. They were not waiting for a possible OFR, but due to the injury / the player leaving the field. At 84:38 the referee already indicates "nothing after check".

      Delete
    3. I think this check was faster. There was an injury then a substitution. In the min. 84:40 Dias’ body language says check is over, it’s not penalty. 1 min VAR check is acceptable IMO.

    1. Not really IMO, at least three missed YC to real players in second half, the one to Modric unbelievable. And again it could never be a RC in the first half, this is my opinion

      Delete
    2. Modric agree, others absolutely not. Missed YC for Duvan in the first half for ellbow against Vazquez.
DOGSO is quite gray area. Technical more RC, but according to ‚the sense of the law‘ more YC.

      Delete
    3. Agreed. IMO the red card decision is simply correct. Potential YC would arouse much more controversy and wouldn't be well-based on the Laws, so the optimal choice was made by Stieler.

Apart from this widely discussed incident, Stieler offered a solid performance with a high bar of what constitutes a foul or not, was respected by the players and coaches (also in the RC scene). One unnecessary advantage and one-two missed cautions (GK's intervention in 14', handball at sideline, reckless tackle in 92') don't make it much worse.

8.3-8.4 if I would be an observer!

      Delete
    4. And what about the missed 2nd YC to Casemiro for simulation? Stieler run there to show 2nd card then he maybe remember this would have been 2nd card. Also clear missed YC to Toloi in first half just after the red card

    8. First situation is a clean tackle IMO. Defender gets the ball first and only slightly touches the attacker afterwards. One can't expect much more from a sliding tackle. Should have been a corner though.
In the second situation I agree regarding grey area.

    9. I agree with both decisions taken by Soares Dias, first one is tackle on the ball and I have also the feeling that attacker tried to use it for getting penalty. Maybe not a 100% simulation, but more that than penalty. Second incident: I wouldn't have whistled as well, one can't be 100% sure how much responsible is defender for that fall, contact looks a bit sought by attacker.

  40. Very negative feedbacks from the most important Italian newspapers about Stieler perfomance yesterday, with the red card reported as very clear mistake. I must say I dislike this approach of Italian media about UEF refereeing, since Collina's times, there seems to be always conspiracy theories (mistakes against Italian teams on purporse). I strongly condemn that and I think red card was a fully supportable decision. In my opinion another big problem for Italy is that nowadays in serie A it seems as we are used to a "common sense" officiating without "strong" decisions (especially at the beginning of a game) that could be fully correct according to law, but people don't want to see. That's terrible. In a way, I think that teams have taken the scene over refereeing, that's not good. Having said that this RC is fully supportable and even absolutely correct for some people, I must state that I dislike modern times, in which it seems that for most of the people, refereeing must obey to teams and not the contrary. I don't want to say that referees must take full control of everything, but decisions on the pitch must be accepted. It is time to stop such behavior. However, in a more general speech, we could include in this discussion the trend by some referees to be lenient, to play on in clear situations, to issue YC. The pure refereeing seems difficult to put into practice today. I don't know what is the situation in other country but that's all I can report for Italy.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Worrying situation in Italy then, a trend we unfortunately see around the world. As blogger I share an image at the start of the game and then usually use the hashtag with the name of the referee or the teams involved. I got over 100 hate messages from Italian football fans who curse at the referee. Or they insult me because they think I am that referee - as if I was live-posting this while referee.

I have seen this before, but what worries me now is that it even happens with correct and supportable decisions. Although I want to state that some reactions always go too far, even when a decision is wrong, I can understand some frustration when there's no contact at all and a penalty kick is given. But the aggresion shown now just because a decision is taken against their team, even with correct calls, is worrying me.

      Delete
    2. IMO, that's a disgrace for refereeing, when such decisions are deemed as clear mistakes in public media.

Here in Germany, public media mostly reports a controversial/debatable, but supportable decision, which is actually quite fitting, if you ask me.

However, refereeing is definetly loosing credit at national level, as DFB's philosophy of 'clear and obvious' VAR-interventions is absolutely not effective, but rather counterproductive.

I read comments that deem our German refereeing level as the worst in Europa quite often, which makes me quite sad to be honest, because I simply don't think so.

However, I don't have the feeling that referees need to adapt to the teams here or der overly lenient. This trend seems to be much more present in Italy.

      Delete
    3. Here in Switzerland the decision was said to be correct. If you consider that a Swiss player was sent off and Swiss media is always sort of „proud“ of their international players this is a good sign.
However I agree with you all. I was really shocked what I had to read on Duch Referee‘s post. This is is the problem with social media: Everyone one can write everything. Disgusting. No knowledge of the laws but if your team gets a decision against them (doesn‘t matter if correct, supportable or wrong!) the referee is insulted. Wouldn‘t be surprised if Stieler will get death threats over the nexr days, I‘m afraid.

      Delete
    4. To be honest, I really cannot understand all this controversy around Stieler's RC! Things to consider:

      - Was Mendy in full control of the ball?
IMO, yes. Despite not having the ball at the moment of the foul, it was still very close and he had serious chances to reach it.

      - is Freuler actually committing a foul?
IMO, yes. He tries indeed to reach the ball, but ends up making contact on Mendy's knee: at this speed, such contacts are enough to make the opponent fall.

      - Could another Atalanta player have intervened here?
No! At the moment where the foul occurs, Mendy and Freuler are alone. The Atalanta captain is not far behind, ok, but he is absolutely powerless at the moment the foul occurs.

To be honest, I can't imagine a scenario where this is not a red card. In past weeks, we were not happy that referees needed VAR to get such DOGSO calls right, Stieler did it here without VAR and in my opinion he has got it spot on.

I think the problem is not the decision itself, but the fact that it happened so early in the game. I believe it would have gained more acceptance if it had happened in, let's say, minute 65. However, the fact that this incident happened in 17' is by no means Stieler's fault: he simply applies LotG correctly! And if fans and media (and random bots on social media or on here) start now to question a referees competence because he CORRECTLY APPLIES THE LAWS, then I believe we have a very huge problem!

      Full support for Tobias Stieler!

    7. Here in France, RC is considered as a so-so decision and Stieler is very lower-marked (4/10) by L’Equipe. IMO, supportable call by Stieler. A bit harsh and I prefer here YC as ball is away and not clearly playable by attacker. But not clear mistake either.

      Delete
    8. Fans were, are and will be blind if it goes about their team but what is most appalling is that nowadays big federations care more about being free of medial controversy than about correct decisions to be taken.

So such people like Collina or Rosetti have to work under enormous pressure made by important non-refereeing (or even anti-refereeing) people and sponsors who want great 11v11 spectacles with referees in the shadow, not stepping in when necessary only to guarantee a better show (whatever it means... I think that some 10v11 or bravely refereed games are way more interesting and full of dramaturgy than what we saw from Velasco Carballo at the WC2014).

Arguments are not important anymore. Subjective opinions, forcing different (modern) visions of refereeing where one of the most important task of referees is to not harm any big team and any big player. Why big? Of course, to avoid media attention...

Yesterday's red card is 100% correct decision that shouldn't be even much discussed. But hey, red cards are ruining football, not the players who commit fouls. Referees are guilty if they apply the laws properly. It has become crazy...

    9. @referee analyst:
Actually the ball is full control of the striker. The reason he can not play it again after one or two steps is obviously the foul.

    10. For referee analyst : i hope your POV is not established after this newspaper...If so please change of nickname. I'm also french in ref world and it's a very long time i have not read this newspaper. If i want an accurate analysis i don't read this kind of rag.
Sergio and JR : I fully support your replies.

  41. Marciniak has a game on Sunday with Sokolnicki, Listkiewicz and Gil as VAR. So, most likely he has a game next week - either CL on Wednesday or EL on Thursday.

    1. There aren't CL / EL games on next week, there is a break before CL return games (from 09/03) and EL next round (11/03).

    2. ah ok, so maybe a training before 09 or 10/03 CL then

  42. On paper, a lot seems finished. But that's not true. Especially without people on the stands, a lot of matches will be difficult. I think it's almost impossible to not re-appoint some referees. There are, with Marciniak/Oliver/Taylor/Kruzliak out, just not enough options. Also, lot's of Spanish teams, so few options there...

    Barcelona - PSG 4-1 Vincic.
Liverpool - Leipzig 2-0 Mateu Lahoz.
    Juventus - Porto 1-2 Brych.
    Dortmund - Sevilla 3-2 Orsato.
    Chelsea - Atletico 1-0 Makkelie.
    Bayern - Lazio 4-1 Sidiropoulos.
    Real M - Atalanta 1-0 Cakir.
Man City - Gladbach 2-0 Hategan.

      But: Barca lost

    2. Barcelona - PSG is likely to have referees who have more CL KO experience. I also think Turpin will be in CL for 2nd leg

  43. After having watched Grinfeld in Rome, Rosetti was at stadium yesterday in Bergamo as well for Stieler. He is always very close to his referees.
