  1. To me all expected, also Kruzliak as fourth official; very good choice: Turpin, Taylor, Orsato Marciniak, the best. Now I hope Makkelie in the final and Vincic in Lev. - Rome

  2. Good appointment for Marciniak and as expected. I'm curious to see who will be appointed for Leverkusen against Roma, a match with an increased risk. It requires an elite, but with Makkelie being a favorite for the UCL final, it's not likely to be a favorable appointment for him. Vincic?

    1. My opinion is that both Makkelie and Vincic will appear and I would think committee will decide after their performances on EL second legs. We will know tomorrow.

  3. Makkelie will referee UCL final this is my prediction

  4. OT: Anderson Daronco yesterday in Nacional de Montevideo vs River Plate from Copa Libertadores GS.

Two footed lunge + punch in the face in the subsequent mass confrontation. Both incidents shown by VAR in the OFR, only a YC (!) given to the offending players.

    1. Well Daronco is known to be very lenient ref and ref like this makes Vincic,Turpin and other Euro lenient refs tolerable.

In Brazil,Daronco, Claus,Abatti and some others are sometimes showing very high level of leniency that is unacceptable with Daronco being at the top of that department.

      Delete
    2. It is horrible to see this, a shame. And the worst thing is that I don't think is any punishment for Daronco. IMO very poor level of refereeing in Conmebol nowadays.

      Delete
    3. I can almost understand the YC for the hand in the face. It is difficult to tell if any real force in the action, but the preferred and much safer option is of course a VC RC. The out of control 'tackle' however... clear, clear, clear RC

  5. Why is a second ball in the field of play not a reason to stop play? In case of a goal, would that have been reviewable? Looked like it impacted Bayern players

  6. Great performance in the first half. He is constantly in motion and follows the rhythm of the game.
Excellent positional play with proactive following.
You can see that Marciniak practiced football at a high level. A pleasure to watch him refereeing.

  7. Obvious foul missed for pushing, correct VAR intervention. Goal disallowed.

  8. Agree with this OFR. Pushing with both arms was too evident. Definitely VAR stuff.

    1. VAR stuff? He should have seen it LIVE.

    2. American Football calls this "Hands to the face". Should have been spotted on the field but quick an good intervention.

    3. Correct to disallow the goal. But why no YC? This is a clear case of arm as a tool for me

    4. I mean, we've had SPA, dissent, DtR through stopping a quick free kick and kicking the ball away. If we're doing 'big picture' avoiding cards, then might as well avoid the dissent of giving one there

      Delete
    2. He did same thing earlier, but I think these are instructions given by UEFA, when a team is losing, they need to hurry the decision and not to wait for delay.

  10. Possible serious serious error from AR1?

  11. Bayern Munich screwed over by Real Madrid again?

  12. What a enormous mistake in 90+14 from AR1 and Marciniak who whistled too earlz! Incredible blackout!

    ReplyDelete
  13. That last offside that cancelled the Bayern goal: I don't think that was offside. At least it was flagged way too fast. There's strong doubt for me if it was offside and if it wasn't, the goal should have stood. Big mistake for me, no matter if it was offside or not.

  17. There will be tough days and weeks to follow for Marciniak. German commentators cannot believe what they saw, Marciniak not delaying the whistle.

    ReplyDelete
  18. A howler to dump out Newcastle, and a poor technical decision, that may or may not have been the correct decision to have a possibly large impact on the UCL final teams. Team Marciniak have had better seasons

    ReplyDelete
  19. Disaster for AR1. I *think* he is JUST offside, but an incredible mistake to not delay the flag. And Marciniak also should not whistle but he can be more excused

    ReplyDelete
  20. Turpin looking good to open the Euros. No chance of Marciniak opening IMO now. The Germans will not have him now for that Overall felt he was very poor tonight. 2 VAR interventions and the shambles of the end of the game. Multiple offences let go and not punished

    ReplyDelete
  21. Just incredible how every suspicious decision goes in favor of Real. From year to year, from decade to decade... I just can't stand this. Even with VAR and new rules, such a big ref teams make such a big mistakes in favor of them. Incredible.

  22. Major blunder from ar1 if you ask me

    ReplyDelete
  23. That is really poor from AR1

    ReplyDelete
  24. It is very remarkeble that the AR remains on the field to discuss while Marciniak is already inside

    ReplyDelete
  25. Well it would have been a great performance of refereeing but there were 3 serious mistakes which can't be ignored.

Marciniak - he didn't see the foul made by Nacho and cancelled the goal only after OFR

Listkiewicz - apparently wrongly raised the flag too early for offiside at the very end of the game, Madrid players stopped but who know what could have happened

Kupsik - wrongly raised the flag for offiside at Madrid second goal, goal that was awarded after VAR review, it was not even a matter of centimetres, it was a pretty clear mistake.

The marks awarded by Mike Riley will not be too high tonight for neither of them. I think everybody had higher expectation from Marciniak and his team.

    1. That ending is always to be expected when you add 15 minutes in a match with 2 late goals.

      Delete
    2. Thanks matei for the most objective comment. Indeed the marks for all 3 should be quite low. Only Kwiatkowski could rise in standing. 2 pretty quick correct interventions.

It will be interesting to see how Marciniak is managed at the EUROs. His season hasnt really been that great before tonight if we are honest. More relaying on his authority then on acutal accuracy. Still for me the appointment tonight was still justified. But now, even leaving out the controversial late call, he was quite sloppy and needed 2 VAR interventions (which we know Rosetti doesnt like). Apart from Marciniak losing the opening game I dont think we will see any consequences but lets wait.

Actually a big ROAR in Germany, so maybe a very rare case of a referee not being possible for german teams?

      Delete
  26. What an incredible pity that Team Marciniak made such a crucial mistake. This should not happen at their level, and Marciniak could have easily delayed the whistle. This looks like a goal in every way, and Bayern has every right to feel aggrieved.

  27. Yet another Real-Bayern, yet another “phenomenal” performance randomly favouring one team. Congrats, once again

  30. If I had dared to defend them, it would have been decided that the player in what appeared to be an offside position had given the ball back and it was no longer a very clear attacking situation that could have delayed the flag and whistle. I don't think that in itself is wrong. However, at such a high level, it is expected that he feels there is a possibility for such great plays to occur.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I think AR1 is completely correct that his knee is offside. The replays look like he is just offside. If only he delayed, or Marciniak ignored the flag and delayed for a few seconds, then we could all applaud an excellent offside. How poor procedure and such strong over-confidence has led to a poor 'big picture' and scenes of a mess at the end

      Delete
    3. Another question is whether it can be believed (if it shows offside), now the game is long over. Should have been shown live on the broadcast if possible

      Delete
    4. Well clearly they won't... There have been numerous examples of fans holding into victimhood even with objectively correct decisions. What they really should've done was end the match and not play for 15 additional minutes.

      Delete
    5. Should have. I know folks like to moan, but this is something the PL have long done very well, showing the offside lines immediately. Even in one competition, it seems so inconsistent in Uefa matches dependent on who the host broadcaster is

    2. De Ligt is a toe offside. The other player surely isn’t. Neither his knee

  33. The decision to eject one of the world’s best linesmen from the Polish crew, if it indeed was that, seems a very mistaken one at this stage… the optics are very bad and I’m sure Marciniak lost the EURO opener tonight but some people need to get a grip, (Real) players had lonnggg stopped before the ball went into the net. As another remark - impossible to replicate Collina, all other referees are tied to some controversy and drama other times in their career, even the ‘revered’ WC final refs (cf. Puhl) too.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Very difficult decision for Marciniak there. Delaying the whistle and confirming an eventual goal would have lead to chaos by Real since they stopped playing. You are in a lose-lose situation. Just an incredibly poor flag by the assistant referee.

      Delete
    2. Did they stop for the flag or the whistle? I think the whistle came very quickly so hard to tell.
And even Collina had his foes. Evertonians haven't forgiven him!

      Delete
    3. I want to underline this - by FAR worse is Kupsik’s mistake, who couldn’t refresh from the initial onside to perceive a VERY(!) routine behind-the-ball offside.

      Delete
    4. @Daniel Bailey can’t tell to be honest, if they stop because of the whistle then very poor from both the AR and Marciniak but still, incredible mistake from the assistant and not optimal solution by Marciniak. While difficult and controversial the optimal solution once the flag is shown is to delay, wait for the attack to be over and then follow the flag so you can utilize VAR.

      Delete
    5. Even Collina had the Everton controversy at the very end.

Regardless, I don't think it's fair to compare a modern referees to the old times in terms of how much controversy the public notices. The media landscape is very different now than it was even 20 years ago, when a referee could make a major mistake in a huge game and yet could get lucky enough to have no one notice. Now there are cameras and social media everywhere, no mistake goes unseen. Of course it is impossible for someone to have a whole career without big controversies.

      Delete
  34. So, after PSG-Newcastle, again a decision in the dying seconds that ruins Marciniak’s big picture (fatigue?).

That early flag is the talk of the town and something you don’t want as a referee.

Other than that, I do have to praise his management in a very challenging game.

Bayern/Germans obviously not happy. It is 100% clear now that Clément Turpin will officiate the opening game at the EURO. Rosetti’s observations always have a short term aim.

    ReplyDelete
  35. So, we have two nights in a row where the two biggest names in UEFA refereeing make crucial mistakes in extra time. I for one don't think the Bayern player heading the ball back is offside (de Ligt seems to be, but that doesn't matter)

If consistency would be a thing in punishing these decisive errors, Marciniak and his team would be looking at two group stage matches at EURO tops.

We all know that won't happen and that is exactly why the mistakes of tonight and yesterday are at least for a big part the responsability of the worst referee manager in football history: Roberto Rosetti. He made sure the big names know they can do everything they want, because they will always get another big game and that made them sloppy, both Orsato yesterday and Marciniak tonight.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I am sorry, but get a grip.
Just putting some eloquent words doesnt mean you can write all nonsense.
Orsato yesterday was correct to not award a penalty and Marciniak made a big techinical mistake, but not a crucial error by any means.
You can criticize Rosetti (I myself did for the EURO selection) but the bridge between 2 single decisions (even wrongly assesed by you) to big names being able to do anything to Rosetti being "the worst manager in history" is laughable.

      Delete
    2. Not a crucial mistake by any means? How? If it’s wrong it’s a match deciding decision made wrongly

      Delete
    3. What on earth are you on about. Orsato was perfect last night. I won’t bother with the rest because it’s complete nonsense

      Delete
    4. We can’t compare these situations. In Marciniak’s game it was a decisive moment (no goal and no extension game)

Orsato could have whistled a penalty in ‘90, but this was not VAR-stuff. Not decisive for the PSG loss.

Imo a big difference between Marciniak and Orsato is that Orsato basically can get away with everything. I’ve seen a few poor calls this season, without any consequences for his control/acceptance and no big headlines as well.

      Delete
    5. Well, actually only a minor part of my comment to Marko but
      @EnglandREF
      1. It is offside
      2. Ball wouldnt have come close to scoring without the flag/whistle
      So technical error.

      Delete
    6. I'm sorry Stockholm but you are drawing conclusions just as easily as you say I do. About the penalty decision by Orsato yesterday I suggest to check the discussion in that match. Mikael posed some very convincing arguments why it should be a penalty today.

About the offside decision tonight, I suggest you present proof it was offside. And you say very easily the ball wouldn't have come close to scoring but you can't know that. So yes, this decision might have decided the match.

A good comparison would be Bjorn Kuipers' (or actually Richard Liesvelds) technical mistake during Croatia-Spain at EURO 2016, where they failed to spot the Croatian goalkeeper coming off his line to early. He might have saved the penalty anyway, but we can't know that and Bjorn was punished there.

Ofcourse, I have to give you that, it's a big leap to blaming Rosetti, but I think the appointments of the last times show it's a big giant mess right now, only justified by the big names managing the big games extremely well. Rosetti's reputation, imo, is so closely related to his big names making no serious mistakes, that right now his position should me in jeopardy immediately, but ofcourse, you can have your own opinion on that.

    1. Well yes but Samuel you must understand that this was not the optimal way of handling the situation. Delaying the flag is routine when using VAR, a tight offside like this in a game decisive moment is ESPECIALLY important. Controversy could have been avoided by the assistant just delaying a few seconds longer for the attack to finish.

  39. On TV, they showed a 3D image with lines, and it turned out that overall, it wasn't offside. Only De Ligt was offside, but he didn't receive the ball. It's a real pity that the assistant referee didn't apply a delay; then the VAR could have corrected it.

  42. It was offside but the rule is that the assistent wait for offside during the attack. The VAR can agree or disagree for offside at that moment. That are the rules these days.

  43. In his pressconference Thomas Tuchel said, that Marciniak told him that he is sorry for making a big mistake - and as a sportsman he accepts that - but the mistakes by the linesman AND the main ref cannot be accepted on a professional level.
Well, I am an old Bayernfan since my childhood. Szymon Marciniak was brave enough to committ his big error. Should we still blame him for that?
I DO NOT WANT to read ANY MORE COMMENTS here phantasizing about "royal paychecks" and I will stop or try to stop anyone arguing in that rude unacceptable way. It is bitter to accept what happened. Many fans feel betrayed. But that did not happen. The players of Madrid, defenders and the goalkeeper stopped acting when Marciniak blowed his whistle. So it was no clear goal at all, just a very big chance. We are here on the side of refereeing and we should not take part in building up bad myths about this incident. No room for rumours. Szymon Marciniak is and stays one of the best referees in the world. And my thoughts are with the Bayern-fans and stuff - AND with him and his family.

    1. And by the way, I watched this many times. For me it WAS offside, because De Ligt went for the ball and influenced the situation even without playing it, before a new situation unfolded.

  44. I agree that the errors, three of them in total, but this last offside not being delayed..was pretty unfortunate. I do want to speak up, that this Bayern possible goal is not a certainty...the real Madrid defender massively holds up and doesn't challenge the shot ..so who knows what really would occur had flag stayed down and players can react naturally

    ReplyDelete
  45. I think tonight will really stop the English media's complaint about delayed offside. You often hear people complain about how it is unnecessary and could result in injury but it is needed exactly for tonight's incident.

I think Marciniak had outstanding presence during the match and had full acceptance by the players until the last goal.

I actually thought the way he dealt with the first OFR (free kick before Munich goal) was fantastic. Any other referee would have struggled to sell that decision but the real Madrid just nodded and continued with the match.

Finally anyone who is suggesting brown envelopes or corruption should really think before they post anyone can make a mistake in a match.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Please stop with all conspiracy theories, you are being ridiculous.

If Marciniak's corrupt, then why did he disallow Madrid's goal?

Marciniak should have never stopped that attack I agree.

He blew the whistle and with that stopped promising attack.

Dont say he stopped and prevented goal cause all RMA players stopped and when they were standing still Bayern scored so please dobt say that he robbed them clear goal.

When we look at full season,we had 2 games where Marciniak was excellent and his last crucial decisions were not good to say the least.

We had penalty for PSG vs Newcastle and today we had this.

Sorry but that's too much for a referee who has reputation like Marciniak.

  47. Unforgivable protocol error by AR1.
Having said that, he looks really tight offside, but he should never have raised his flag so early. Obviously then Bayern scores but we don't know what would have happened without the whistle.
I think the assistant made a mistake, losing concentration on the timing of the flag, as it was a long ball when action started and not an attack with the ball right into the area, where instead he would have followed it and raised it only at the end. Probably "screwed" by the type of attack. But it should have been avoided. However, the huge number of comments on the blog surprises me, in the end it looks like extremely tight offside...

    1. Okay but why is there no deciding evidence? I still think de Ligt offside, Mazraoui onside and then they should have played on!

  48. Only the ref (and not AR's) has the power to break the match. After the obvious protocol's violation by AR1, Marciniak should not have whistled he should have leave the game. I think the error is from both equally.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Madrid fans are making a comparison with Manzano’s early whistle in Valencia vs Real on X. That decision will keep haunting Manzano for a longer time, unfortunately.

Furthermore, I’m also interested how Marciniak will be managed at the EURO now. UEFA won’t like the headlines, however the Polish is the best referee in hot games. He would be perfect in a QF that involves Portugal and/or Netherlands.

I assume, if the AR1 decision was deemed correct UEFA might release a statement. Or Marciniak himself via his socials or Polish journalists, to recover his reputation before EURO. If Mazraoui was ONside, I guess it will remain quiet.

    ReplyDelete
  50. You can say that they could have waited, ok, but the fact is that the assistant referee signaled an offside and Marciniak interrupted the game by blowing his whistle. The goal was scored after the referee's whistle, there is nothing to talk about. IMO, you could have waited with the signal, but there was no refereeing error! Good match Marciniak!
    High marks for him.

    1. You’re losing your objectivity here in my opinion, yes the Real Madrid players stop playing after the whistle so it’s not a guaranteed goal but you can not say that it’s not a mistake from Marciniak to not delay, so is the protocol so is the expected decision with VAR.

      Delete
  51. Another thing to be mentioned, how did we end up with a 90+17' incident? Initially there were 9 extra minutes, which were too much for me anyway, I don't think there was so much time lost until then, I was expecting 7 minutes. After that, around 90+9 Marciniak raised up two fingers, meaning another 2 extra minutes compensation because of the time lost until then. That was a great decision that I must praise, everybody knew that the game is not over. Also I liked that he used the lower leagues style with the fingers raised, I have't seen it from a while and this time the retro felt refreshing. It's ok that he let the game continue even a little bit more but why would you push your luck so much? I mean if he was whistling the end of the game 1 minute earlier, maybe even 2, I really doubt anybody would have had any complaints.

    1. I had the same thought. He had so many opportunities to end the match and he just seemed so intent on prolonging the match for some reason. Maybe that played a role in them messing up the protocol at the very end. Should have ended it when he had the chance.

    1. Vincic is obviously planned, but after Marciniak’s controversial night I do wonder if Vincic is the most “safe” option in the final.

One interesting stat is Vincic has never officiated Real Madrid. Is that an advantage? I’m not sure. In my opinion, Marciniak strongly benefited at the World Cup from the fact already refereed France and Argentina. The players already knew him and accepted him.

With all the respect, Vincic has not refereed that many high profile games between two of the biggest club teams in a knock-out return game. Nothing in his track record is comparable to something like Real-Bayern. And when Vincic did referee a very big and important match e.g. Inter vs Barcelona, he choked under the pressure.

His management was always a bit safe. IIRC Vincic was assigned to the Europa League final 2022 after he officiated Benfica-Ajax and Bayern-Villarreal. Not the best appointments tbh. Marciniak was better that season. This Refcom assigns the final candidate to low profile games and preferably German teams to protect the referee they’ve already selected for the final after groupstage.

I’m not sure how you can trust someone in the biggest club competition who hasn’t been tested that much in the spotlights.

  53. These guys are mic’s up. Correct? Clearly AR1 should have delayed the flag- at this level it is expected. He would have communicated to Marciniak an offside infringement. Marciniak is experienced enough now to know that this is a situation where the flag should be delayed. Instead of communicating back he was playing on he arguably took what he thought might be the easiest decision- blowing the whistle where unluckily for him it blew up in his face. Samuel reckons high marks. I’m not so sure. He’s already acknowledged he made a mistake and apologised after I’m guessing it was pointed out to him by M. Riley. May have had a decent game according to some but unfortunately this incident will be talked about for a long time . It may follow him and influence future assignments. If that happens he’s unfortunate. Just ask D. Makkelie.

    1. Yellow card. It’s not violent conduct imo

    2. I disagree, Oliver.
Pulling a girl's hair like this is a major insult off and on the pitch. RC for me. On the same level like spitting.

    3. I think woman or man no difference, there are also male players with long hair. We had a similar situation in serie A many years ago with Chiellini pulling Cavani's hair in a Napoli - Juventus game and there was a big discussion. Since this is not included in LotG, many people didn't agree about the violent conduct, but in my opinion it should be considered something like that, because with the action you absolutely hurt the opponent, can't be seen as normal pulling on shirt, it is like slapping an opponent. Hair are part of a body. But there isn't a specific answer, it's a grey area, I would just praise a referee issuing RC.

    1. The blog can close because today all about international refereeing is known, even a so long time before :)
Marciniak with the opener, Orsato with the final (if not Italy), now Marcinak removed from the opener, more than a month before.
But yes, for sure he can't handle Germany and if he was planned for this game, now committee will have to change.
Turpin can get the opener after Rosetti observation.
