DeleteSaliba doesn't commit a foul, so the non-YC to him is correct (Gyokeres holds his shorts and has no interest in retrieving the ball). The person who should have been cautioned in this incident according to strict refereeing is Upamecano, for seconds before having committed a clear off-the-ball holding on Isak.
DeleteIt’s refreshing to see Makkelie actually calling fouls when they’re fouls. That used to be the normal standard before this World Cup.

DeleteFor me I have to take a dimmer view than most on that first half. Not terrible but for me not as convincing as other first half performances so far. Foul detection for me has been a bit hit and miss and consistency of contact also the same. Missed YC on 37' being the standout miss. Lacked the impressive authority that others have produced. No major issues or controversies to report but certainly not a performance to remember so far.
ReplyDeleteMakkelie struggles with his technical line IMO. A lot of (too) soft fouls called, not in the spirit of this WC. And then you have this stonewall YC not even detected as a foul. His 1H lacks consistency for my taste.

ReplyDeleteAn unfocused performance from Makkelie. He maintained full control and had the players' acceptance throughout the match, but there was a clear lack of sharpness and concentration.
ReplyDeleteHe missed two obvious corner kicks, failed to award a clear foul for an arm to Viktor Gyökeres' face, produced several late whistles, and on a few occasions even brought the whistle to his mouth before deciding not to blow. Overall, he looked tired and reactive rather than proactive.
There was also a clear missed caution early in the match for a challenge high on the careless-to-reckless spectrum, which was only punished with a simple free kick. From a FIFA approach, many will probably be satisfied with this performance, but we should expect considerably more from a referee of Makkelie's calibre.

DeleteThe only two YCs for players for dissent bit, to suggest very good player behaviour generally amused me in that article... Very easy to praise behaviour using that stat if ignoring 99% of dissent!
DeleteThe bigger problem with the referee yesterday was that he allowed the Paraguayan players to hack and wack on Musiala for the entire second half and overtime and then turns around and cards Musiala when he gets sick and tired of it and retaliates.

Clear (Uefa) foul line and consistent for me, there was the one misread foul on Olise mentioned much above, and the hand to face (60') on his blind side, but two errors/misreads doesn't mean inconsistent elsewhere. Also glad to see the offside advantages when ball in keepers hand, very normal to me, but some have stopped the game unecessarily. Typical European game, officiated as expected. Deserves more

DeleteA decent performance by Makkelie. In the first half, there were some reckless fouls that arguably should have been punished with a YC, and a quick succession of fouls by Sweden threatened to make the match difficult to manage; very fortunately, however, things settled down after that (Yes, that is not to his credit.), and there were hardly any issues in the second half.
ReplyDeleteWith the Netherlands eliminated early on, even more possibilities opened up for Makkelie. Hopely he can reach a slightly higher level, but I’ll be watching to see which match he is assigned to next.
That said, I cannot agree with the criteria for yellow cards in this tournament. I don't understand the rationale behind them. The players are clearly dissatisfied.
He ignores the laws and misses clear situations. Doesn’t even whistle to start the 5 second countdown which the law says is mandatory.

DeleteThere were near 100 comments, most referring to three possible YCs, in a game involving teams playing nice. I think the ripping to shreads on sometimes supportable, often correct, sometimes wrong decisions, isn't exclusive to those outwith Uefa
