    1. Well considering what needs to happen for YC,I am surprised when refs even call a foul.

    4. FIFA doesn’t want these kinds of early YCs. Honestly there were all premises for YC, though

    2. Agree. YC missed to Saliba.

    3. Sorry, totally disagree with calls for a YC. Attacker is facing the wrong way! Is he going to run backwards towards the goal as well? Never SPA, never reckless. Ok for common careless foul

    4. Remove the offender and he will easily turn. Blatant yellow.

    5. Saliba doesn't commit a foul, so the non-YC to him is correct (Gyokeres holds his shorts and has no interest in retrieving the ball). The person who should have been cautioned in this incident according to strict refereeing is Upamecano, for seconds before having committed a clear off-the-ball holding on Isak.

  4. It’s refreshing to see Makkelie actually calling fouls when they’re fouls. That used to be the normal standard before this World Cup.

  7. So far so good. Very calm matching the tone of the match. Tending onto far in front of play. Looking over his shoulder. Perhaps the heat and potential fast pace causing this tactic.

  15. Not a pretty challenge. How was this not spotted or punished?

  16. Again big dissent by French players he need to control them very quickly, very frustrated players

    2. @referee analyst, completely but from a referee side he needs to stop or calm them down or it's gonna be a big issue for him for the rest of the game

    4. The late missed sliding tackle by Tanaka in Japan-Sweden around 5' was way more reckless and dangerous than this one... And everyone was arguing for no foul and no PK on that situation. Makes no sense at all

  17. Unbelievable miss by Makkelie. No word.

    1. you can touch the ball and comiting a reckless challenge or even SFP, touching the ball does not mean that the challenge is correct

  19. Any chance of any of the refs at this wc putting a performance that every can recognise as good. Each game passes and the standards continue to be so poor

  20. The ball was moving during a quickly taken corner kick right before the goal. Can VAR intervene in these types of positions

  21. For me I have to take a dimmer view than most on that first half. Not terrible but for me not as convincing as other first half performances so far. Foul detection for me has been a bit hit and miss and consistency of contact also the same. Missed YC on 37' being the standout miss. Lacked the impressive authority that others have produced. No major issues or controversies to report but certainly not a performance to remember so far.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Makkelie struggles with his technical line IMO. A lot of (too) soft fouls called, not in the spirit of this WC. And then you have this stonewall YC not even detected as a foul. His 1H lacks consistency for my taste.
Apart from than, OK performance so far.

  23. Half time, pretty good performance from Makkelie and his team, and on the missed YCs it's now a new normal at this tournament you just have to deal with it tbh i didn't find anything relevant to post regarding refereeing its good flowing game Hope the second half be nothing less

    3. And Makkelie didn’t want to stop the play even player was down on the pitch for a long time, strongly punched in the face.

    4. 2m away from the assistant, really poor by AR2

  25. Another pathetic moment from dutch ref. Failing to spot an arm in the face and not looking bothered about the injured player

    1. I think you just hate 9him how could someone spot that live the question mark should be on the AR who felt minimum contact and exaggerated reaction. And this a very biased comment

  28. An unfocused performance from Makkelie. He maintained full control and had the players' acceptance throughout the match, but there was a clear lack of sharpness and concentration.

He missed two obvious corner kicks, failed to award a clear foul for an arm to Viktor Gyökeres' face, produced several late whistles, and on a few occasions even brought the whistle to his mouth before deciding not to blow. Overall, he looked tired and reactive rather than proactive.

There was also a clear missed caution early in the match for a challenge high on the careless-to-reckless spectrum, which was only punished with a simple free kick. From a FIFA approach, many will probably be satisfied with this performance, but we should expect considerably more from a referee of Makkelie's calibre.

    1. agree on everything except on the acceptance by the players especially french in the 1st half

    2. I think it is impossible to see the arm making contact with Viktor Gyökeres' face from Makkelie's position.

    3. VAR was awake in the opening game for punch in the head/face offence. Perhaps they were on a coffee break also today?

    4. Probably @Anass but that's why you are refereeing as a team, AR2 is really close and have to call it out.

    1. 7.5 since there are 2 missed yellows, missed corner kick leading to a goal after. And ball not stationary on 1-0.

  35. OT: From Collina himself: "To increase the tempo of the match, referees were recommended not to punish normal football contact and to pay attention to some specific situations which may occur in relation to the tactics of certain teams. An example is when attacking players try to prevent defending players from moving. Although keeping position is not a foul per se, when an attacking player is not interested in the ball and delliberately moves, even marginally, with the clear intention of obstructing opponents' movement and prevents him from defending, then referees, and VAR when needed, should carefully analyse the incident and intervene. This is especially the case when the tactic aims to prevent the opposing goalkeeper from being able to defend the goal"/

    1. After so many people rushed to jump on the referee yesterday...

    2. The only two YCs for players for dissent bit, to suggest very good player behaviour generally amused me in that article... Very easy to praise behaviour using that stat if ignoring 99% of dissent!

      Delete
    3. The bigger problem with the referee yesterday was that he allowed the Paraguayan players to hack and wack on Musiala for the entire second half and overtime and then turns around and cards Musiala when he gets sick and tired of it and retaliates.

  36. Personally enjoyed that. Clear (Uefa) foul line and consistent for me, there was the one misread foul on Olise mentioned much above, and the hand to face (60') on his blind side, but two errors/misreads doesn't mean inconsistent elsewhere. Also glad to see the offside advantages when ball in keepers hand, very normal to me, but some have stopped the game unecessarily. Typical European game, officiated as expected. Deserves more

  37. A decent performance by Makkelie. In the first half, there were some reckless fouls that arguably should have been punished with a YC, and a quick succession of fouls by Sweden threatened to make the match difficult to manage; very fortunately, however, things settled down after that (Yes, that is not to his credit.), and there were hardly any issues in the second half.

With the Netherlands eliminated early on, even more possibilities opened up for Makkelie. Hopely he can reach a slightly higher level, but I’ll be watching to see which match he is assigned to next.

That said, I cannot agree with the criteria for yellow cards in this tournament. I don't understand the rationale behind them. The players are clearly dissatisfied.

    1. He ignores the laws and misses clear situations. Doesn’t even whistle to start the 5 second countdown which the law says is mandatory.

  38. The criticism of the referees in this tournament has been caused by Collina ,he has given far too much leeway on what is acceptable and what isn't, add to this the criteria for VAR to interfere has been a joke

    ReplyDelete
  39. If that was a non UEFA ref in a match not involving two UEFA sides who play nice this would have 200 comments ripping the ref apart for every non foul and yellow.

    2. There were near 100 comments, most referring to three possible YCs, in a game involving teams playing nice. I think the ripping to shreads on sometimes supportable, often correct, sometimes wrong decisions, isn't exclusive to those outwith Uefa
