Srđan Jovanović sorts out a caution during the England - France game. Serbian went on to handle the Final of that U21 EURO 2019. |
Referees:
You will forgive me, but I imagine you readers will be rather familiar with all these five of these referees, not least as they all handled matches at U21 EURO that were excellently summarised by our user Mhmd S. AlKhalifi. Hence, I provide a really short summary of each referee.
* Andreas Ekberg - tyrannical authority on the pitch, can improve his decision making
* Srđan Jovanović - control even in his very challenging games, can improve his decision making
* Georgi Kabakov - strong manager, can improve his disciplinary control
* István Kovács - natural leader, can improve by keeping the overview in his games
* Andris Treimanis - good decision maker, can improve by connecting with players on the pitch
Furthermore, a couple of these referees must have spent time revising recently...
These referees are likely being groomed for 2026 as there are just too many names ahead of them for 2022, barring a Mažić 2014 or Turpin 2018 run.
Support Referee:
I found it odd that there was no support referee from Europe (Peljto / Dabanović?) until I remembered that fourth officials in FIFA just stay at a venue, and only four venues are being used in this competition - it is more politically valuable and also logical in terms of experience to use referees from smaller confederations.
Video Assistant Referees:
Craig Pawson having attended the prospective 2022 seminar can be disappointed to be only VAR here - he started this season well after bad end to 2018/19 internationally; his performances as VAR have been defective (like everyone else, besides Stuart Attwell) in Premier League - most notably in the Manchester United vs. Crystal Palace game. I don't think that has so much relevance for international competition. Luís Miguel Branco Godinho is a talented referee amongst a large number of young Portuguese at the moment, he is currently in 3rd Cat. Marco Di Bello is the next name to be pushed from Italy after Guida and Massa. Bartosz Frankowski and Dennis Johan Higler need to improve in order to get a promotion from UEFA 2nd Cat. Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea is behind a strong Spanish generation is likely to get stuck between Sánchez Martínez and Alberola Rojas, but is naturally talented. Bibiana Steinhaus is among the first ever female VARs in FIFA competition, and habitually uses the system in her matches in Germany's Bundesliga.

Raczkowski is mentioned on Wikpedia, but not in the FIFA document:
ReplyDeletehttps://resources.fifa.com/image/upload/fifa-u-17-world-cup-brazil-2019-list-of-match-officials.pdf?cloudid=kkg9qf8zjbwh9vopioqf
Is it sure, that he will participate?
Thanks Philipp.
DeleteIndeed I used Wikipedia as a reference when writing the texts (fatal error :)) - Raczkowski's name has now been removed.
