  1. Wow... How Robert Madley manages to be appointed to such a huge game even in the Youth League is beyond my imagination!! He is having a very, very poor season in England, serving up some dross in almost every single match... He isn't even among the top 10 among English referees this season... I just hope he has a good game here and repays the Committee's trust!!

  2. Sometimes you are too harsh. We are talking about Youth League, I think Madden can definitely handle it. :)
There aren't only "big competitions" and "big assignments".

    1. Or maybe he has something like Clattenburg used to have, different type of refereeing in UEFAs tournaments..

    2. Not talking about Madden, Chefren... I was talking about Bobby Madley... Madden does really well in Scotland so no issues with him... If you've seen Madley regularly (which I have) it's absolutely clear he had a horrific season... He is the third worst referee in England this season as per rankings by some ex-PL refs like Halsey and Hackett... The performances have been so poor at times and so full of KMIs that his status as a FIFA ref has been questioned... I hope he has a good game here!!

    3. Sorry, my mistake. I meant Madley, of course. :)

  5. Some big news from Austria: Fritz Stuchlik, who observed for example Felix Brych only some weeks ago at Juventus-Tottenham (first leg), left the football business, so he is not UEFA observer any more too.

First, there were reports the Austrian football association (ÖFB) suspended him, one day later they delivered Stuchlik and ÖFB had agreed to part ways. Anyway, as this happened very abrupt and ÖFB does not want to give any further informations about the reasons, there probably was an incident. Currently, there are a lot of rumors, also about his game in Turin.

Stuchlik was the referee manager in Austria, actually leading the whole referee panel which is now on the move for sure. UEFA loses a quite meaningful referee observer with a lot of appointments in UCL/UEL during the last few years.

    1. What are the rumours about his last game in Turin?? Can you please share??

    2. Thanks for this very important news, Referee09.
However, Soham, we must remember that rumors are only rumors and not the truth. I prefer to avoid such speculations on the blog. There should be a reason and if UEFA / OFB don't want to make it public, we must just accept that.
      Thanks.

  6. Milorad Mazic has no game on weekend in Serbia. Next week in the CL between Barcelona - Chelsea?

      Delete
    2. Probably we'll see Mazic in Barcelona. Other option is Manchester-Sevilla, but since Grujic and Djokic are busy on Sunday, it's hard to expect them to be again on the pitch on Tuesday, even though they are AARs.
Mazic was several times on Camp Nou, dealing mostly well, and he was often good in refereeing English clubs. I don't expect some tough match there for the referee there - Chealsea will play defensively, trying to counterattack, but they are not "dirty" and there wont be harsh fouls. Barca will control the ball and the game. Potential simulations would be the biggest issue for the ref.

  7. The fact, that Seidel (who is his Bundesliga AR2) is not appointed with Siebert, could indicate an appointment of Stieler in EL next week.

BTW, First Group referee Tobias Welz is appointed to a 3rd division match this weekend after a long injury break.

    1. 1) Supportable decision by referee, however watching replays, the challenge could have been assessed as "only" reckless. In any case, RC not a mistake for me, because it was potentially a very dangerous action against the opponent, with more than serious consequences. I want to add, I see that when Polish referees make the OFR, they spend even a long time watching the incident. Here in Italy it is different, referees watching videos on the pitch are always quick and they immediately come to a conclusion, not more than 30 seconds as average, I would say. Maybe in Poland it is different, they also talk for a long time with VAR officials.

      2) Goal, no punishable offside.

      3) Correct penalty, arm raised and clear contact with the ball, impeding the head-butt by opponent. Very difficult if not impossible to spot live.

      4) You said everything, in such situations it is always difficult to let play on without whistling. In this case my idea is that it is a normal collision, but for most of the referees, it is enough that keeper is just accidentally touched by an attacker, to whistle a foul in favor of defending team. As this is a common practice, I would say that referee can be backed there.

    2. Thank you and estkane.

IMO, it's still a yellow card according to last UEFA RAP (see A35 clip), but I praise referees who punish such tackles adequately (blame on UEFA and FIFA for allowing such brutal play...).

      Delete
  9. RC for SFP. The way how the orange player went to this tackle is brutal (intensity, studs, height), even if the contact was slight, RC cant be wrong, serious injury could have occured

Goal or offside? I dont think its the case of 'clearly obstructing' so the goal is valid but the teamwork between AR and the referee is needed.

And as always, thanks for the clips Ray!

    3. IMO he is. I wrote already years ago on the "previous blog" that we need to keep an eye on him. Personally i expected him to be on the FIFA list before Obrenovic. His style is more like Vincic than Skomina. Let's see how he does ...

      Delete
    4. Do not misunderstand me - i'm not saying that Obrenovic isn't promising, i think they both have quite equal chances and predispositions to succeed. What's unique about Obrenovic is that he talks to players unusually a lot. I still cannot decide if i like it or not :) in my refereeing times i never talked a lot, so not my style ;)

    3. Thanks.
55': I think arm is not so open and NO CALL is still supportable, but at the same time penalty could have been whistled, grey area, of course the most important thing there is that referee had the exact perception of what happened and assessed the incident according to his discretion.

82': Not a penalty, in my opinion. It seems as the contact is caused by Liverpool player who puts his leg into opponent's path. I would accept play on.

89': Close to RC, but in my opinion YC still supportable. If the player had hit the opponent in his chest in a clear mannr, this would have been a dark red card, the fact that player was only slightly touched, could play in favor of YC. Of course a referee can issue RC based on the potential consequences of such actions and it wouldn't be a wrong choice. Similar speech to the foul in Ekstraklasa's game posted by RayHD. In this case, even a bit more RC, but YC is still a supportable choice.
However, such challenges are surely unacceptable.

    2. He had to be sent off... How did Anthony Taylor not see it and how did the AR not let Taylor know about this??

      Delete
    3. Because they are Premier League referees. The players are their owners and they have to obey the players and never do what the laws of the game says.

      Delete
    4. That's not true... Michael Oliver is showing red cards whenever situation arises... Not all refs are the same 😓😓

      Delete
    5. Clear RC for this action against assistant referee. Incredible that player was not sent off. He undermined officials authority by that action. Who is the leader on the pitch?

      Delete
    6. That's what I think too, Chefren... Even if referee Anthony Taylor missed it, AR Adam Nunn should've immediately informed him to take some action... That nothing was done of such petulant behaviour is really so sorry to see!!

      Delete
    7. Oliver misses many dissent situations. I am talking about those things not fouls.

      Delete
    8. Yep... English referees are lineant with that, I agree... But if you see the modern day bosses, they demand refs to be lineant be it in FIFA or UEFA or wherever... So I don't blame the refs only here!

      Delete
  16. Here is as well the red card given by Michael Oliver in Huddersfield-Swansea. Absolutely the correct decision, clear SFP. I guess, Oliver communicated with the fourth official (Jonathan Moss) before he made up his mind. Thoughts?
(Funniest bit: commentator thinks it's a wrong call and thinks VAR should be used here. LOL)

    1. Absolutely a RC for the Swansea player, a brutal and dangerous tackle, good decision and good cohesion with Moss.
What about a RC for the tackle of the Huddersfield player also? Very heavy stamp without control of his body, to my mind excessive force. Of course, on the pitch it is hard to imagine a situation with two RCs like that.

      Delete
    2. The Huddersfield player probably got a bit of the ball though... But somebody should tell the commentator he has got it all wrong 😂

      Delete
    3. The RC for Swansa player is OK, but situation is quite particular for the reason explained by Mikael. I have the same feeling about the player from Huddersfield. He was also guilty of a (at least) reckless cahllenge, stamping on the opponent without control. So two RC wouldn't have been a mistake there...

      Delete
    4. And to be fair, the stamp occurred split second before the studs contact... But nearly impossible to detect it live.

      Delete
    5. So is it a crucial mistake then? 🤔

      Delete
    6. Only in case the referee observer will deem the stamp as worthy of a red card (in my opinion, it's indeed a red card offence).

      Delete
    7. But nearly impossible to detect it live factor??
