A very special thank to our reader RayHD.
I know it's not international friendlies, but if anyone has any information on the decisive matches in AFC Asian Cup 2019 Qualification Round Three (Groups A, B & F), it would be greatly appreciated!
ReplyDeleteThis guy - Francoa Leteixier - has progressed impressively, reaching each year new tournament, and french reffereing at all, but it strange how this nominations are made, either by countries or Uefa, two kinds - young stars or old dogs.
ReplyDelete"Old Dogs"
DeleteA label perfectly suited for Jonas Eriksson. A referee who's best days are in his rear view mirror. Sadly his ego prevents him from doing the right and honorable thing and simply step aside. Many greats (G. Poll, M.A. Rodriguez, R. Rosetti, ect) have done this in the past when they realized that their time had come. However those that I mentioned were, are, and will always be "GREATS", while Eriksson, meh, not so much. If anything, for the good of the game. The referee committees have got to stop sending him out there. It reflects poorly on the committee. And makes it seem as if being mediocre is acceptable and tolerable.
Too harsh a comment on Eriksson but overall you do have a point... Gracefully quitting and moving on at the right time fetches respect!!
DeleteSheriff. Are you okay? Only a stupid person would step aside if they are a FIFA ref and still get appointments. Eriksson doesn’t decide he is good enough for FIFA games. FIFA decides. Stupid comment.
DeleteRetirement is a personal choice, we can't question on that, we can't invite a referee to do that. If a referee shows always poor performances, he shouldn't get games, Victor is right about that. People "responsible" for that is who appoint him, not the referee himself. We will see what will happen with Eriksson.
DeleteAlso, I want to invite you all to moderate your words: we like to share opinions and to discuss about hot topics, but always with the needed respect. Thanks.
Victor, Using your logic, R. Rosetti, C. Vera, G. Poll, M.A. Rodriguez, E. Osses, and H. Webb, all "stupid".
DeleteStupid is continuing to go out onto the field time after time. Even though your performances leave a lot to be desired and your ability to grow or improve has become stagnant. Furthermore, having FIFA's or Bussaca's approval is no badge of honor.
Yes retirement is a personal choice. But there comes a time where a decision much be made or strongly suggested if it's for the good of the game. Or to protect and conserve what little if any prestige the referee has left. There is nothing sadder than seeing a player struggle to play when he's past his prime. The same goes for referees. Neither can continue to get by based on past glories.
Being that this is an opinion based blog. What I have stated in my previous and current comment is just that. My opinion. Disrespectful? No. Not at all. Disrespectful because you don't agree with my opinion? Yeah that might be the reason for you or others.
Regret to say this, but Ovidiu Hațegan absolutely RUINED Romanian Derby which took place between CFR Cluj (1st place) and Steaua (2nd).
ReplyDeletemin '37 - incorrect penalty for CFR Cluj, ball hit player in shoulder. Former FIFA ref Ion Crăciunescu said on live TV he would have never awarded penalty for this.
https://streamable.com/1p30e
min '58 - missed penalty for CFR Cluj
https://streamable.com/m63pa
min '64 - red card for CFR Cluj player, however before the foul it seems there was a missed handball at Steaua player #7
https://streamable.com/9zfcw (0:34)
min '72 - very soft straight red card for Steaua #5, no intention to harm the opponent, he even seems that he tried to avoid stepping on him.
https://streamable.com/jul04
nd to end on a positive note, FIFA ref Radu Petrescu (34 yrs old) has just returned this month to refferee matches in Romanian Liga 1, after he underwent brain surgery. His last match was in July 17, Dundalk vs Rosenborg in UCL Qualifying, game after which Petrescu accused severe pain in the back of his head.
”37 ball clearly hits his arm not the shoulder but it doesn’t matter because it’s clearly not deliberate and a whistle should not be used.
Delete”64 not deliberate handball and it doesn’t matter if you call that before. The other foul still must be punished with a yellow card.
DeleteThanks for the detailed info about Radu Petrescu, a very good news, and thanks also for the videos about Hategan game. In any case, I don't like too much to read terms like "referee ruined the game..." and so on.
DeleteWe can talk about a poor performance, a bad day, but nothing is done deliberately.
Having said that, for me there are indeed at least 3 mistakes, 2 of them very clear. Wrong penalty for handball, the ball touches the arm (a replay is clear about that), but the arm is absolutely close to body and it is impossible to whistle such penalty. The missed penalty can be a mistake as well, but here I could leave some room for discussion, because I'm not sure about the real intensity of the contact. RC clearly wrong: here no doubts, there isn't any intention by player to hurt the opponent / step on him.
Not the best officiating by Hategan.
BRAVO Romane.

Thank you so much, but what about the friendly appointment for Di Bello? If he is in Spain for U19...
DeleteMost likely he will be replaced...
DeleteIt is interesting to see that for each countries where the round is played an important observer is sent.
DeleteMost notable mention is Paul Tierney under the supervision of Marc Batta 👌
DeleteIndeed also Petrescu (back from injury, very talented referee according to his palmarés and good reports from his U19 EURO) and Pinheiro (a young Portuguese talent that UEFA needs? Although the informed comments of DA would suggest otherwise).
DeleteSome other interesting observers, but nobody else from the committee.
Pinheiro gave good indications when he reached the 1st category (2015). He did a classic this year with a positive work and few more important games. But he has a problem at the moment: it was discovered that he sent internal information about the Portuguese refereeing to a former referee and former delegate and that information was then sent to one of the main clubs.
Deletehttp://www.record.pt/futebol/futebol-nacional/liga-nos/fc-porto/detalhe/fc-porto-revela-troca-de-emails-entre-o-arbitro-joao-pinheiro-e-o-delegado-nuno-cabral.html
All this was while Vitor Melo Pereira was president of the referees.
His future will depend on the trust (or not) of the current FPF referee committee.

Very good appointment for Dennis Higler... He is a very promising and talented referee... One for the future Elite group!!
DeleteHigler makes (too) many mistakes in the eredivisie. I don’t see him as a future elite referee
DeleteBut he gets quite a lot of appointments there 🤔
DeleteIs there anything information about observers of these matches?
DeleteNot from me anyway, but a great way to find full appointments (including Delegates / Observers) is by going on the UEFA Press Kits website (any match UEFA sells television rights for, you can find all appointments for):
Deletehttp://www.uefa.com/insideuefa/mediaservices/presskits/index.html
I don't know if Higler will reach elite. He struggled in Holland for some seasons, bit is doing well now. He may have made some mistakes, but he got much bigger matches now, so it's seen much moee. Overall, he is a trustworthy referee.

DeleteCan you believe this?
ReplyDeletehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QjKnJTReiDQ
According to the laws of the game it is correct penalty. The problem is the simulation which is blatant. But clearly the defender attempts to trip him and that’s enough for a penalty. You punish the offence that happens first.
DeleteAttempting to trip an opponent=direct free kick/penalty kick. But a yellow card for simulation is more apporopriate here.
Can somebody please tell me who is refereeing the Norway vs Australia and Australia vs Colombia games!?

Excellent decision from Neil Doyle! Hats off to Kasper Schmeichel for his reaction (no 'convulsions' in order to influence the ref) as well!
DeleteIt seems a consistent point for improvement for Kulbakov is his sowing- indeed he is without the FIFA badge.
ReplyDeleteHe missed a YC so far but very boring match, still in the first half.
UPDATE
DeleteHe has the badge on for the second half :-D
I think somebody informed him after having read your message on the blog at the end of first half :P

ReplyDeleteWhy were there six substitutions per team in Russia v Brazil?? Is it some kind of a trial??
ReplyDeleteThat's totally normal in friendlies between national teams.
DeleteOh I see... Thanks for the info... I never really noted it before today!!
DeleteNot that concentrated first half by Gil Manzano in Amsterdam, but still okayish performance.
ReplyDeleteAlso maybe sth interesting to write, thanks to the local commentary here in England. This match was earmarked to have VAR, but it was decided that the Spanish referees didn't have enough experience of the system (by FIFA?), so it was just a simple quartet instead.
Thanks for the info, however I find that quite weird.
DeleteIf they wanted a game with VAR, they had just to appoint officials able to use it.
English referees in the media say Gil Manzano missed a penalty, and didn't have his best evening.
DeleteGood second half by Collum in Düsseldorf, both teams focused purely on football so the Scottish put himself firmly in the background, and facilitated a flowing match. Excellent fitness also.
ReplyDeleteSo clearly Collum is NOT one referee finished yet :D

DeleteClearly a dive in my opinion and I thik goal missed by AR.
DeleteIn interview with polish TV Lewandowski said that he discussed this call with referee just after the final whistle and Oliver explained him, that he whistled in mainly due to defender's reaction just after the contact.

He wasn't in the shortlist so why would anyone hope him anyway? But overall the conclusion is Collum is one referee unfinished :D
DeleteAccording to media in Croatia, Atkinson announced before a match (ARG-ITA) that it is his last international match.
ReplyDeleteSome sources claim that he told the players before that he won't issue any cards as it is his last international match!!
DeleteDoubt it.
DeleteManuel Lanzini said that to media.
DeleteWhy should a player make up such things about a ref?? Maybe Atkinson might have told them to behave well so that he doesn't have to issue cards in his last international game... Teachers often speak like that to students!!
DeleteI can imagine Atkinson delivered it with a wry smile, rather than meaning it literally
DeleteI didn't watch the game but it was reported also by Italian commentators that Atkinson had revealed something like that before the match.
DeleteWhy would any ref say this to a player? What if someone smacks a player in the face or spits on someone? A ref can’t decide before the match to not show any cards.
DeleteMaybe he said that but without being so serious, with a smile on the face, of course then on the pitch in case of card he would have issued it.
DeleteExactly... Just a small friendly request to players for being well behaved in his last international match!!
DeleteLanzini asked after the match why he didn't pull any cards, and then he said because it was his last match.. This is match fixing when betting is involved, I needed 3 cards for €4000: https://twitter.com/Nick123Dutch/with_replies

1. I've many doubts because of ball position, but I'd issued a red card surely.
Delete2. Foul, but as contact isn't strong can I think the referee can be backed, but IMO that's an "unsportsmanlike" manner of winning the ball possession, even if it's a soft push.
3. Play on.
I think, all three decisions are in the referee's latitude (I just learned a new English word...).
DeleteBut with replays I would have decided like Quilava, i.e. RC, foul and no penalty.
In my eyes: YC, foul and no penalty.
DeleteMore YC than RC, due to the presence of another defender and the position where the foul occurred, I would say RC would have been very harsh if not wrong, so OK by Musial.
DeleteSecond situation is in my opinion foul, third one: no penalty.
1. I don’t see any foul. Looks like simulation. Typical dive fall.

Who is the referee in these friendly matches?
Horrible foul and correct red card in Denmark-Panama: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SvwkTRcvBK4
ReplyDeleteElfath seemed quick for this 2CT for failure to respect the distance, given it was a friendly, but it is correct in Law and perhaps this was a tactic throughout the match: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qZpJTNdq3VQ
Video removed :-(
DeleteDo you think Elfath can attend the WC one day @usaref? It seems USSF & CONCACAF have a lot of faith in him
Of course Mikael... He is very big talent :) I think usaref will agree!!
DeleteVillarreal has been, thus far, the #3 in the United States and the presumed front-runner for WC22 after Geiger and Marrufo retire.
DeleteI suppose Elfath has a chance. He probably has a better feel for the game than Villarreal overall. But Villarreal is a much better technical referee, in my opinion; I've seen Elfath have some shaky performances, even with VAR. But Elfath steadily improves in MLS. Villarreal has become a bit more erratic.
It all really comes down to how they perform in CONCACAF and which one Brian Hall likes more. The edge right now in those two categories goes firmly to Villarreal.
Regards!

Very soft call in occasion of the RC for DOGSO. I wouldn't have whistled it, for me not enough. However, once assessed as foul and whistled, RC is the correct disciplinary decision.
ReplyDeleteAbout the penalty: only the execution is shown there, if you have a video with the foul...
Buquet okayish in POR-NED. Good reaction on respectless behaviour from Tete (I liked that), bit soft 2nd yellow on the first quick view. Not really consistent in his approach.
ReplyDeleteOh, and... 4 times people on the field. Quite a scandal.
1. For me not only a very soft call, I would say even it's a wrong call. There's a minimum contact, player still runs for a few moments and then goes down. Play on would have been the right call in my view.
ReplyDelete2. Correct penalty, the defender trips his opponent on his right foot.
The penalty is correct. I agree with Stake.

12min - Nig v Serbia - ball crossed the line but AR didnt saw it.
ReplyDeleteIncredible English refs... In Serbia/Nigeria Serbia scored, the ball was behind goal line, but SR signaled nothing - play on!
ReplyDelete*AR
DeleteIt was really hard to spot, you cant blame AR for it.
DeleteYup, only English refs made mistakes, great comment.
DeleteSometimes it's better to say nothing...
It would ne nice to see this with GLT. I bet it's few centimetres on the line.
DeleteWithout GLT, it's goal but not so easy to detect
They are making mistakes ALL THE TIME! And right now Pawson and his AR1 missed PK in favor of Serbia - absolutely punishable handball, hand in unnatural position.
DeleteAnd DrMr I didn't ask you to say nothing!
Why are you mad? Its not even PK. Lets be realistic more, its really hard to spot if ball crossed the line, and about handball - not penalty in my opinion. So chill
DeleteTough guy.
DeleteVery difficult to spot, I agree... Absolutely not any glaring obvious mistake as some are suggesting... I give every benefit of doubt to the AR here... Saw a replay of the PK situation and I'm very much with no penalty... Rather not punishable handball I would say!!

ReplyDeleteTunisia - Costa Rica.
No RC there by Frank Schneider?
Sorry, unacceptable...
I fear it's the trend nowadays. No RC unless you hit someone with huge force. One can say the contact was not so strong although the intention is clear. I really don't like it.

DeleteStuds on ankle. Can break the foot. Clear red.
DeleteBetter quality: https://streamable.com/rwu0a
DeleteAs Victor said. I think Eriksson missed the incident as the whistle came quite late.
Oh yes, that's a clear missed RC... Eriksson is quite far away and not in a good position to see that so he had not the proper perception of the incident... Not sure how much it was within the AR's view but overall it's an error by Eriksson which were now seeing again and again and again matches after matches!!
DeleteDudes from FIFA and UEFA will say "moderate force" and "one can issue a red card but it's not an obvious error". We'll see something like that at the WC, I'm sure.
DeleteClear RC but impossible to spot for the referee, even more if he is so far away like Eriksson was. Stuff for VAR, I hope that at WC this kind of challenges will be always punished by a straight RC, but knowing Busacca I have my doubts.
DeleteI agree that due to "endangering the safety of an opponent" it is a RC by the book.
DeleteBut personally (as a spectator), I would not like RCs in such situations, because it is more an accident, which is difficult to avoid for the offender (contrary to high intensity sliding tackles or straight leg SFPs, which surely could be avoided), because it is just part of his running movement. So I don't really see guilt there, which makes a RC seem harsh.
Anyway it surely would be helpful, if FIFA would communicate, what they want there to have at least a common interpretation among referees and VARs.
Eng vs Ita: minute 82. The player is ”injured” and off the field. Before the throw in he rolls inside the field intentionally so Aytekin will stop play. Aytekin gives him a yellow card.
ReplyDeleteGreat job and I said that he should get a yellow before Aytekin showed it. I like Aytekin’s tomerance level.
Excellent decision by Aytekin in this case!
DeleteUnsporting behavior by English player who deliberately joined the pitch while lying down, in order to make the referee stop the play.
Minute 85' ENG - ITA penalty assigned to Italy after VAR review.
ReplyDeleteCorrect: Aytekin had missed a clear contact between the feeet of defender and attacker.
To add, Rosetti is at stadium and today there was a VAR workshop in London with many representatives from all interested federations.
Taylor is now struggling as the game gets heated. Should issue some more cards or things could go worse.
ReplyDeleteEven with the scoreline of 5–1 he's struggling?? Although it's nothing new, Taylor always struggles in heated games but in a friendly I wouldn't expect that to happen!!
DeleteMake that 6–1 :o
DeleteYes. Very tough fouls in the last minutes. Mass confrontations. Not a good management at all. A scoreline 5/6-1 is usually more difficult to manage for the referee... specially if the team winning is the home one and their fans are saying "ole" with each pass. That makes players from the away team angry and they foul tougher. To be honest, Taylor didn't do well at all, not the management to expect from an Elite referee.
DeleteEspecially if opposing team is from South America and we all know that they have very passionate players.Teams from there are always very passionate, but when they are not winning they lose their heads quickly and start to make rough fouls.
DeleteNot a pleasant news to hear :(

Deliberate handling?
https://streamable.com/xh643
1) Play on, not much contact
Delete2) Yes deliberate. Last ditch effort and defender makes himself bigger.
Never deliberate. It hits his arm very close to the body. Cheeky probably thought it hit the left arm but it hit the right arm that was tucked in.
Delete1) You can whistle it.
Delete2) Not a deliberate handball.
1)Play on for me, not enough contact.
Delete2)Not deliberate as the ball comes very fast.
1) One can definitely call the penalty here, but it would be very soft. I prefer play on here.
Delete2) Unintentional, so play on here as well.

Umm.. I really didn't noticed that as a mistake.
DeleteDidnt even saw the foul to be honest..
DeleteDifficult situation for Bojan Nikolić. Attacker's fall looked like a dive but the contact is clear and the referee positioned like that should have detected that, imo.
