  1. Big surprise there. Makkelie with Manchester United - Sevilla.
Differently from Zwayer, the Dutch makes his debut in KO stage in a very important game, still open to any outcome. A big signal there, we must draw the conclusion that Makkelie has gained a big trust by committee.

Dutch refereeing is in safe hands 😌

    2. Definitely a very good path for Makkelie.
He will take the place of Kuipers in a few months, and he seems to be ready.

    3. Yes he always has been a safe pair of hands and with more and more experience he will get the even bigger games... He is no less than Marciniak in terms of talent!!

    1. One could say Karasev but difficult to see a referee from Russia handling an Ukrainian team. Surely this wont happen.

    2. Maybe a huge risk and an English referee?

    3. Skomina is most likely there now I'd say! Surely Russia and Ukraine are kept separated from one another in UEFA competitions!!

    1. Now this is another appointment I just didn't see coming... Committee is springing up lots of surprises this time!!

    2. Wow, another big surprise there! Undiano with a very important game in CL KO stage. A long time, I don't remember his last important appointment at this stage, if not a game just to make a presence... very good for the Spanish, but at the same time, let me say, more than unexpected.

    3. And that coming when Mateu hasn't featured in a CL KO this season yet!!

Now one of Skomina or Mazic will miss out in this round and directly get a CL QF I'd assume!!

  4. The no appointment of Yuste Jiménez, has regular AR1, with Del Cerro Grande in Alavés-Betis tomorrow indicated he had a big chance to be appointed for this match

    1. We discussed this last week, but bets were on Undiano for Besiktas - Bayern.

In the end, it seems that CTA appointments can be taken into account: Mateu was appointed last week (although in EL) and this week it has been Undiano.

  5. Karasev very likely for Besiktas - Bayern, otherwise committee will suprise us again by appointing him in Barcelona!

  6. But with Díaz Vega as observer, the only suitable match was Roma-Shaktar or maybe a Europa league match with a long travel (I also thought in Dinamo Kiev-Lazio)

    1. Yes, yes, with Díaz Vega it was impossible for that game. After Mateu's appointment, I expected an EL game for him too, but congratulations to him. I think he is not in his top form at the moment, but I wish him luck.

  7. That is my bet, Chefren! If both, Mazic and Skomina, have still chances to referee Champions league final, I am pretty sure UEFA don,t want take risks with them. The appointment of one of these referees for Barcelona-Chelsea can be read as a good signal for the other one, in my opinion

  8. I'm considering all sorts of surprising options for Barcelona v Chelsea now... Karasev?? Kuipers?? Brych again?? How about Cakir for both legs?? 😶

    ReplyDelete

    1. Mazic or Skomina... in my opinion no other options there.

      Delete
    2. Well, I predicted Cakir for Barcelona-Chelsea earlier, so I am still with that prediction. Very happy for Undiano 😁

    3. I think appointing the same referee twice for the same match is a not an option. First of all, if the game is heated and something happens against one of the teams, the media will surely target him and the fact he has been appointed twice.

Second, it can be seen as a lack of good referees in UEFA. If you need to repeat a referee for a game at a time you have 20+ Elite referees, then it is a very poor pool.

Besides, I think there are many options available: if you want to keep Mazic and Skomina under protection for a possible CL final appointment, then you have Brych, who handled a game last week but that should not be a problem. You have Rocchi, who handled RM-PSG and, in spite of what PSG might say, it was not a really bad performance. You have some less experienced officials such as Turpin who did very well in Sevilla-Manchester United. Plenty of options without repeating.

      Delete
    4. Let's stick with Mazic for Barcelona and Karasev for Istanbul... Skomina protection for Final

      Delete
    5. No UCL for Mazic this week ;)

      Delete
    6. What makes you say that?

    7. I share the same question as Sale... How do you come to such conclusion? Has Mazic himself told you?

    8. Soham, why do you think a CL Final candidate cannot have any top clashed ahead of the Final?

    9. It's confidential guys, sorry.
      But you can trust me!

PS I'm an old visitor of this blog (also I was a follower of '3rd team' since the begining)
My informations were almost always correct, so there is no reason to doubt it :)

My old username was 'RefRef', I think Chefren remebers :)

I had problems with that account so I'm using new one now.

      All the best!
      Cheers.

    10. @DrMr I thank you for the information... There's no doubting or anything and neither do I ask for any confidential secrets... The information itself is a lot for us :) Do you have any hints for us who the appointed refs are for Wednesday?? Any update on Skomina??

@Autor I'm never saying that the CL final candidate cannot have a top match... But trends in the past few years show that the final refs (except Clattenburg) all got 1 good R16 game in UCL and then straight to the final... There were EL KOs in between... This is usually done to protect the referees as in case of a big mistake they cannot be appointed to the Final!!

    2. Only one appointment for England, that's not good. Atkinson still Elite but disappeared, Taylor and Oliver as new Elite referees need time. Pawson still Category 2, triying to manage a promotion for the next update. But... I don't see a solid pool of regular officials which can assure the future for this country at moment.

      Delete
    3. Some talent are coming through at the lower levels... Chris Kavanagh, Andrew Madley, David Coote, Rob Jones, John Brooks are some of the names who I feel can succeed at the highest level in the coming days!! Among the current lot Paul Tierney is a good prospect I feel... I don't expect too much from Robert Madley or Stuart Attwell to be absolutely honest!!

      Delete
    4. Agreed, also Darren England seems a promising referee (former FIFA AR), as well as Tom Nield and Ben Toner. Peter Bankes seems to have made a good development. Personally I really like Tim Robinson, but I don't think he'll attend PL.
But in England there is a big problem finding replacements for older referees, and has been since quite a few years.
For the real longer term, names like Max Chaytor and Joel Cripps are ones to remember.

      Delete
    5. I forgot to mention Darren England... England is doing really well in his debut season as SG2 in the Championship... Coming to Tim Robinson, he doesn't convince me a lot and I'm not a big fan of his!!

      Delete
    7. John Brooks and Darren England are doctors of this game.
Both were FIFA ARs, if they become FIFA referees, they should try some other sports, basketball for example :)

    4. I think Skomina will definitelly appear somewhere. His whole international team is out of the appointments for Slovenian 1st Division matches on Wednesday.

      Delete
    5. As DrMr says Mazic has no CL game this week, then Skomina has to be going to Camp Nou??

      Delete
    6. I don't know how credible DrMr is. If his information is really true, than frankly I don't see any other option. Of course Skomina is possible also for EL as you predicted. But it would be his second appointment "only" in EL KO. I somehow doubt that, even though he could be "shielded" considering possible CL final.

      Delete
    7. I'll try another argument, of course only a speculation. I have to correct myself, in Slovenian 1st Division there are two matches also on Tuesday, including a derby match between Maribor and Domžale. I could imagine that at least some members of Skomina's team (Jug, Vukan, Klančnik), if not Skomina himself, could have been appointed for this important match in case Skomina had an international match on Thursday, not Wednesday.

      Delete
    8. Yes I checked now on Slovenian football federation's website, indeed there will be four games between Tuesday and Wednesday, and not even a single teammate from Skomina international's crew is there. More than a signal in my opinion...

      Delete
    9. Yes but still not a clear answer whether the team will be appointed on Wednesday or Thursday ...

      Delete
    10. One point to note... Although referees have had the same team more than once in the season but there's not a single instance this season yet where the same referee has visited a venue twice... Skomina has already visited Camp Nou in MD1 so does that rule him out??

      Delete
    11. I think it would be unwise tu rule out a competent referee just because of such factor. If this was the case, i'd say they'd try to avoid repeating the same referee for the same team, regardless of the venue, not vice versa.

  11. My predictions: FC Barcelona-Chelsea, Mazic
    Besiktas-Bayern, Orsato

  12. Willie Collum is currently handling Glasgow's Derby, now it's halftime.
So far a really good performance, basically perfect fouls detection and two correct inevitable YCs at 44' and 46'. Also

+ Two very firm verbal warnings, one for each team, that absolutely succeeded.
+ Really distant approach, Collum is an accepted authority on a very hot pitch.
+ Always close to the crucial situations, including great reaction for the YC at 46'
+ Generous line in fouls contributing to a totally flowing match
    - Rangers player made a tackle at around 23' where he lost control of his body, Collum didn't even whistle a foul (there was no dangerous contact, thanks to the Celtic player jumping). At least I would expect an IFK and a strong verbal warning.

So far overall very good handling of the hardest Glasgow Derby since years.

    1. I see reported a straight red card in second half.
      Was this decision correct?

      Delete
    2. I'm a Celtic fan, thought the ref had a good game. As you say, very surprised with the tackle at 23' wasn't even a free-kick, sliding in with studs up.

      RC footage: https://streamable.com/acphw

It was given by AR1 Douglas Ross who could be seen shouting "red card" into the mic on another replay. I'd say a supportable decision, if there was VAR it probably isn't a clear and obvious error.

Clear red for me, the movement of the elbow is not in any case natural

      Delete
    4. Excellent decision! Celtic player knows that his opponent is behind him, the movement of the arm is deliberate and the arm is used with excessive force. It's a clear violent conduct which has been correctly punished with a red card. Well done by William Collum and Douglas Ross!

      Delete
    5. Collum continued with an excellent performance in the second half. I was very impressed by his firm approach, his management of dissent was actually fantastic- he was a totally accepted authority on the pitch. Great cohesion with AR1 Ross for the RC.
Together with Fenerbahce - Lazio that is the best I've ever seen the Scottish today.
Maybe he will get a EL match on Thursday? Or directly to a Quarterfinal (CL is too much IMO, but EL is reasonable)?

  13. OT: Serie A, Crotone-Sampdoria, penalty for the home team at 23’.

Before the penalty kick, CRO #5 is about 5 meters inside the penalty area. The GK saves the penalty and #5 scores on the rebound. The penalty should have been retaken.
My question is: could have VAR intervened?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. From VAR protocol:

The referee can initiate a review for an offence by the goalkeeper or kicker which directly affects the outcome of the penalty kick and thus whether a goal is scored.

If an offence is clearly identified, the necessary disciplinary action must also be taken.

Encroachment can only be reviewed if:
      • an attacker who encroached scores or is directly involved in a goal being scored
      • a defender who encroached prevents an attacker playing or being able to play the ball in a situation where a goal might be scored

      Delete
    2. Well, it seems a “yes” to me then!

  14. Big controversies in Lech Poznań (3rd) v Jagiellonia Białystok (1st)

Lech's goal disallowed after VAR intervention. The referee, Tomasz Musiał, awarded a direct free kick, so most likely a deliberate handball

    No penalty after that challenge

Penalty for handball, confirmed by VAR

    1. 1) Not a deliberate handball, in my opinion, but I can understand why a refere in such situation can decide to whistle it (advantage taken before a goal scored). To add, I don't see any offside position.

      2) Clear penalty. Why no VAR intervention?

      3) A clear mistake there, arm was close to body, player didn't increase his body's volume. Ball would have hit him in any case. I don't understand why VAR confirmed the penalty: I know that in Poland there are strict guidelines about handball, but well, this is never deliberate.

Wisła Płock - Korona Kielce: of course, here a correct decision.

Pogoń Szczecin - Cracovia: I would back the referee there, no penalty seems a supportable choice. I watched and rewatched the incident without coming to a clear conclusion.

Nowy Sącz - Piast Gliwice: clear RC, deliberate action, studs up.

      Delete
    2. 1) If handball, then it should be the elbow of #66 - which would be far from clear and obvious for me. But I think in the final situation #16 is offside, when #13 touches the ball. Anyway it indeed seemed to be a direct free kick. The referee should communciate his decision better
      2) At least a foul (+YC) everywhere else on the pitch
      3) Rather no penalty for me, but probably not a clear and obvious mistake
      4) Indeed nearly the same as 3). Not sure, whether the VAR can do much in this situations, unless you consider one of them as clear errors. I think, it is rather the grey area in handball situations (+ interpreation of referees on the pitch), which leads to those problems. The question is, whether one of the referees considers it as thmistakes, when they see it again, i.e. whether it is a matter of perception or interpretation
      5) Contact with left legs is not enough IMO, contact with right legs is more difficult, but not a clear penalty, I think
      6) Maybe you can defend YC with a rather low intensity, but RC surely would not be wrong and IMO the better choice

  20. According to the Arbitro Internacional, following an information from Oscar Ruiz, VARs in teh World Cup will be in the center of operations of Germany, and communication will be from a distance.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. From Germany to Russia? Mmhh I'm not convinced, there could be some problems with such distance!

      Delete
    2. If confirmed, that would most likely mean, that VARs will stay in Germany and that they are a complete seperate group, i.e. no VARs will be used as e.g. 4th officials, and no main referees (or ARs) will be used as VARs. That was not clear so far, I think.
Advantage of this solution is that you have technics, that have been tested for a whole season. Maybe they also use the same operators as in Bundesliga? Those could, of course, also travel to Russia...
A disavantage is that VARs and referees don't stay in the same place, maybe there is less of a "team feeling" then.

Barcelona – Chelsea Damir Skomina (SVN)
Bayern – Besiktas Sergey Karasev (RUS)

    Lokomotiv-A.Madrid Tobias Stieler (GER)
    Plzen-Sporting Benoit Bastien (FRA)
    A.Bilbao-Marseille Aleksei Kulbakov (BLR)
    Zenit-Leipzig Bjorn Kuipers (NED)
    D.Kiev-Lazio Jesus Gil Manzano (ESP)
    Arsenal-Milan Artur Dias (POR)
    Salzburg-Dortmund Milorad Mazic (SRB)
    Lyon-CSKA Michael Oliver (ENG)

Dias and Mazic could be switched if UEFA pays more attention to the clubs' reputations. However, I feel that Salzburg - Dortmund will be a more tense game and a better test for Mazic, also bearing the previous game in mind. In addition, if they want to promote Dias they need to appoint him to high-profile matches as well.

  23. Did you see incredible riots, hardly ever seen, in Greece, in PAOK-AEK derby match? Everything happened after AR2 denied goal for home side in 90' due to alleged offside. The player was offside and if the ball touched him then the decision is correct. But, if he didn't touch the ball, and he tried to avoid it (and I think he managed to do so), then I don't think that he influenced goalkeeper, because he was behind him. I read that president of PAOK threatened AR2 with his pistol (everything happened after Greek FA returned 3 points to PAOK (after they punished them with -3 points). Who knows what will happen in Greece after this match... AR2 did have a guts for that call, but it might be he was wrong. Waiting for your opinions.

  28. In case of need, this evening I will delete some of the old comments in this discussion, to make room for the new ones about referees performance (that's of course the most important thing and the subject of the topic). A pity that blogger doesn't allow more than 200 comments.

  29. I would like to suggest to crate separate discussion posts for each gamedays with some special tag, so it will be separated from main post with referee assignments.

Posts will be more clear as there would be only game related discussion and after the game, you can edit core of this disscusion post and add for each game link to video situations, if someone will provide them, and assign them some sort of special code, so it will be more easier for users to find videos from game as it will be on top directly in post, comment them and last but no last qucikly recognize about what game situation is someone talking about (for example BARCHE_1, LIVTOT_3, and so on..)

  30. Some excellent offside flags in the early minutes of Roma - Shakhtar by AR2 Yuste Jiménez. AR1 with a correct call as well.

  31. OT:

Bebek with blatant no penalty call.

    Luckily for him,Hajduk(white team) won.

    1. Penalty, however you have the explanation of his mistake: he thought that player had touched clearly the ball, indeed corner kick was assigned...

  32. 40' in Roma - Shakhtar, another difficult situation for AR2. This time I have some doubts, he raised the flag. Maybe player was offside only with the head, however, in case of NO FLAG, nobody would have complained. To be checked carefully.
When first half is almost over, more or less an expected level by Undiano: maybe one missed foul, and a wrong free kick for a phantom handball (10', no touch by hand at all).
YC to Florenzi for holding. It was not a blatant action and attacker was still on his own half, surely a supportable decision as the shirt was clearly pulled, but according to some RAPs, maybe it could have been avoided.

  33. Any updates on Makkelie from anyone who is watching?

    ReplyDelete

    1. No big/controversial decisions. Early YC was a clearly reckless tackle, therefore correct. Maybe a couple of fouls missed, but surely expected level.
Difficulty will probably increase in the second half, so let's see.

  34. 79' : Straight RC for DOGSO by Undiano Mallenco to Shakhtar player

    1. Now there is a bit of a mass confrontation among the players... The ref has taken control quickly

  35. Correct RC for DOGSO by Undiano: clear holding from behind.
Now a mass confrontation, following an incident with a ball-boy.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Interesting to underline, before issuing RC, Undiano had a visual and very blatant communication with assistant referee, to be sure about the player and the color of the card. Surely not an elegant proceeding, but without doubts a working one. "Old school" of refereeing, I would say.

    1. Yeah, he clearly asks to AR1 "último?, último?" - "last one?, last one?

  37. Minute 85 Sevilla: deliberately kicked to the GK? Head ref said play on.

    ReplyDelete
  38. In any case, we can discuss about a potential violent conduct by Shakhtar player against the ball boy. This was the reason of a mass confrontation. Undiano decided for YC, but RC was maybe the correct solution there.
For the rest, all YC issued were OK.
Another good onside by AR1 when Roma scored.

    1. For me, unacceptable behaviour from Ferreyra (Shaktar). RC in my opinion...

    2. I think the YC was correct. It was some kind of a push, nothing brutal. I would say that two first yellow cards for SPA were a bit harsh but acceptable. He didn't present that overrated 'modern' refereeing, just a very good game reading and reacting on what was in front of him. Another good appointment should follow!

  39. I think that Makkelie missed to give indirect for Manchester for deliberately giving ball back to GK by Kjaer.

  40. No way it is a YC. Even if the push was soft (and from the stadium it didn’t look so soft) it was very dangerous since the boy fell bad and the intervention of medical staff was needed. I’m afraid that the only reason why he didn’t issue the RC is that he had just sent off another player

    2. It has to be an excessive force or brutality in order to send the player off. I am more than sure it was not the case. Would the ref have sent him off for such push against an opponent? Surely not.

By the way, I really hope AS Roma will be fined for the ball boys behaviour in the second half. Disgusting!

    3. I agree with you, Roma has to be fined.
But let me say that I’ve read here many people saying that last week Cristiano Ronaldo should have been sent off just for having tried to hit a player from PSG. Today we saw a player pushing a ball boy (damn, a ball boy!!!), causing him an injury. Please note that at that moment the referee was still writing the caution and Shakhtar was going to replace a man, so there wasn’t any delay of the game.
In the first leg Tyson had to be sent off for VC, today (imho) Ferreyra. For sure, they can’t complain with the refs!

Potencial violent conduct outside Sevilla penalty area

  42. Saw this question posed on twitter - goal or offside? https://youtu.be/9CSRNBMA2MQ?t=86 (1:26)

    1. The angle of the camera and the view makes it really tough to tell, but assuming that the player that is in the collision with GK is in an offside position on that kick into the penalty area, then yes, offside, as he interferes with the GK, by being in that space where the GK is jumping into, forcing him to change his jump somewhat.

  43. Rafal Pieper most likely meant this incident. Reckless foul for my taste (neither unsporting behaviour nor violent conduct because it happened while fighting for the ball, imo). In addition, a correct play-on call after an undeliberate handball.

    1. Thanks for the vuideos.
It wasn't a violent conduct by United player in any case, let's explain that, because he clearly tried to kick the ball by his attempt but he was late and he hit the opponent with a certain force. It could be a SFP, but I would say YC for reckless challenge here, given also the attitude of the player and the fact that he was not totally aware of the presence of the opponent (he just turned around when he hit the defender). In any case, a clear YC missed by referee.

Borderline situation about the backpass, of course defender kicked the ball in that direction mainly because he had to save the net, but well, keeper was there. Deliberate? I don't know, I wouldn't be 100% sure because first of all this can be assessed as something like a save, player had some pressure. Makkelie can be backed.

Let me add, the Dutch handled this game without problems and it was the first match in KO stage, a top clash. He will have for sure a brilliant future. Congratulations.

    2. Very good Makkelie as everyone mentioned... Also good Undiano Mallenco yesterday... Very happy with both performances yesterday 😎 Now it's over to Skomina and Oliver... Which game will you watch tonight, Chefren??

    3. Fully agreed, it was really pleasant to see Undiano especially, a very refreshing performance last night.
I know it's unlikely, but it would be nice to see him in a EL Final, maybe in 2019 in his last season.

@Soham- One can watch both live! At least I will try to.
