  1. Well, it seems the committee assessed all the controversies from Lazio - FCSB as acceptable calls from Slovenian. Or maybe they like his strict approach towards dissents (me too!). Or both. :)

    Strong reactions on dissents:

    1. This was my idea as well, I expected another appointment.
I think in all of these situations you can back referee, but the most important thing resulting from these clips is the very firm approach of the referee on the pitch.

    2. He fights for elite really well. I wish him good luck in Dortmund. UEFA need such strong personalities.

      Delete
    3. Vincic is a referee who I rate a lot. He has a strong personality as opposed to some Elite referees.

      Delete
    4. anonymous, just out of curiousity which elite referees do you think have not so strong personality?

      Delete
    5. CristiRef,

      Turpin, Skomina... for example...

      Delete
    6. Turpin lacks personality? Eriksson lacks personality? Kuipers lacks personality? IMO personality is much more than waving 2 cards for dissent and Vincic has some way to go before he reaches the level of these 3 referees!!

      Delete
    7. Personality is way too broad as a description.
But I can fully agree Vincic has more 'guts' than many Elite referees, we saw that in GUI-DYK, U21 EURO et al (but when RefCom does not back Çakir's RC in MNU-RLM, I wonder if you can really blame the referees).
I hope he becomes the second Slovenian Elite, despite his age (thirty-eight) he has the personality that UEFA are really missing at the moment IMO.

      Delete
    8. I agree with Mikael that guts is a more appropriate word than personality... But going all guns blazing won't work in all matches but surely he isn't scared to make brave decisions which I appreciate... Never means that other Elite refs bottle calls or lack personality!!

    9. One thing I would like to see is referees in the first video use the "too much talking" gesture with their hand, so everyone knows what the YC is for. For example like in rugby: http://laws.worldrugby.org/?signal_category=all&videoid=40

  3. Mateu Lahoz with another EL assignement. Interesting.
We wont see him in CL on next week, it would be the third appointment in a too short time.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. But why we won`t see Lahoz in CL next week? Does his appointment at this week depend for the next?

      Delete
    2. He would get the third game, definitely too early.

      Delete
    3. It is definitely an interesting appointment: it is the second match in a row that he will have to travel to Russia.

Not sure about what it means not getting a CL match this round and getting two EL appointments: it could be very good if he is appointed directly to the next round for a significant match, or can mean something bad (consequences of the play-off, maybe) if he is not. On the paper, the two EL matches were good. Let's see.

      Delete
  4. So no Lahoz for CL.

    Makkelie, Skomina, Mazic and ?

    1. I think Karasev. Maybe Karasev in Manchester, Skomina Rome and Mazic Barcelona.

      Delete
    2. I think Björn Kuipers might also be a candidate for a UCL game next week??

      Delete
    3. Kuipers, Kuipers, Kuipers ... We all know that you have a crush on him, but over and over again - so tiresome. No offence!

      Delete
    4. Since it's a possibility, it's up for discussion... Get on with it!! Not that it's mandatory for you to reply if you aren't interested... Thank you... And offending someone and then writing no offence makes no sense :)

      Delete
    5. @Soham, I don't understand why you feel offended, Sale has written the truth. You mention Kuipers in almost each of your post 😃. You have diminished the use of exclamation mark (!) in your post; I thank and congratulate you for that, so maybe you try to mention Kuipers a little bit less, too. It's no doubt I root for my compatriot Skomina but I don't have such a crush on him as there is yours on Kuipers 😉.

      Delete
    6. Haha "crush" isn't the right word, refereeing is a passion for me and Kuipers is my role model... But my mentioning him isn't out of context you see... In a scenario what's his chance of getting the game is the question I put forward... It's just that I am interested to know his chances rather than someone else... And that's obviously down to preference!! 👐

      Delete
    7. Frankly, don't see how trying to "sell" one referee for every big match is adding to the discussion. Fell free to, anyway, I'm not the administrator.

      Delete
    8. You are understanding it wrong anyway... Let's leave it and move forward rather than argue on a petty topic... Let us agree to disagree 🙂

      Delete
  5. Well, maybe he will appear on second legs, but as for now it is strange to see that Oliver has been totally ruled out from any game. There could be some reasons, otherwise I don't understand.

Craig Pawson can be the next great English referee IMO, Saturday will be the biggest match of his career.
      Oliver's appointment suggests a EL R16 return.

      Delete
    5. For me, Pawson is been pushed a lot by English Committee recently, but he never convinced me that he is going to be big referee. Simple, he makes lots of mistakes, as same as all the rest Premier League refs. Refereeing in PL has never been so bad, except Atkinson (who is at the end of his career) you don't have big name in England - Oliver and Taylor as 2nd and 3rd are far away from one Webb or even famous 3YC=RC Graham Poll. Pawson is nearly 39, he is not young and never proved himself, so I think that they should search for some other name (beside Oliver, who is young - only 33). I can't remember big match for him in UEFA competition. And there are reports that Liverpool fans fuming over PL's decision to appoint Pawson as a ref for ManUTD clash (due to controversial penalty given in favor of Everton in Merseyside derby). Not the best choice IMO - hope I am wrong.

      Delete
    6. Yeah agreed he does make a fair amount of crucial mistakes (but with VAR planned to join for 2108/19, this is more irrelevant), eg Manchester City - Tottenham was in 7,1/2 area, but I never saw a referee in England with such a sophisticated personality/management than Pawson, since Webb/Clattenburg, and considering his young(er) age also. Thanks to the age limit being closed, he still has about ten years, and probably he will enter next season in UEFA First Category.
Maybe one can call it unwise to send him to another big Liverpool match, but I think he has the quality for this top fixture.
I hope he proves me right!

      Delete
  6. Good to see that Kruzliak gets indeed a good match in EL round of 16. Good match for Kehlet too! He is improving quickly.

I suppose we will see Makkelie and Oliver next week.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. No room for Oliver in Champions League, given that Makkelie should be in Istanbul.

      Delete
    2. Then I'll say Oliver in Lyon v CSKA Moscow 2nd leg?? Or maybe Athletic v Marseille 2nd leg?? By the way Oliver will be out with his European team Bennett and Burt this week in PL!!

    1. There are many similar situations with other referees.
I hope, this time, a job at the usual level.

      Delete
  9. I'm surprised to see Kehlet again. He is very pushed by UEFA, with 37 years a little bit older than others but if his development (or at least his appointments) continues this way, we'll see him in an UCL Group Stage game next summer.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I'm starting to think that, in case of no Spanish teams in EL final, Mateu Lahoz could be a candidate.
I want also to underline that everything is always more than carefully planned by committee: you can see that we have three Spanish teams in Champions League Round of 16. This of course means that there will be a maximum of 3 out of 4 games with possible Spanish involvments in quarterfinals, but there will be surely a game without Spanish teams. This leaves a free spot for Mateu Lahoz and in my opinion he is already planned for that round, after two EL assignments.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes there are similar appointments before where referees did 2 EL matches and then directly got a CL QF so that's what is most likely for Mateu... There is nothing to be worried IMO...

      Delete
    2. Atlético Madrid must be in EL Final.

      Delete
    3. That's a secondary thing... If that's the thing then Mateu won't get the Final that's it!!

      Delete
    4. Many mistakes from Mateu both in European competitions and Primera (you know about them), so I don't think he is appropriate candidate for one of the finals this year.

      Delete
    5. Sweden v Italy comes to mind (!)

      Delete
  11. Really suprised to see De Sousa again after bad performance with crucial mistake in previous round.

    1. That too with a Spanish team... Could've been easily avoided with so many other referees available!!

      Delete
    2. What is the problem with the Spanish team?
For the same reason the French referees can´t play matches with Spanish teams.

      Delete
    3. There is no problem... But Portuguese referee with a team involving Spanish team can be avoided...

      Delete
    4. But there have always been Portuguese referees in matches with teams from Spain.
      For example, this session:
ULC: Sevilla FC - Spartak Moskva > Artur Soares Dias
UCL: APOEL - Real Madrid > Artur Soares Dias
EL: Panathinaikos - Athletic Bilbao > De Sousa

And Spanish referees in matches with Portuguese teams.
UCL: Besiktas - Porto > Mateu Lahoz
UCL: Benfica - Bsel > Gil Manzano
UCL: Benfica - CSKA Moskva > Mallenco

      Delete
    5. Can be avoided IMO... Nothing more!!

      Delete
    6. Slovenia neighbours Austria. So e.g. Vincic shouldn't have been appointed for Salzburg IYO?

      Delete
    7. Vincic isn't in a terrible form like De Sousa so no problem...

In Italy Irrati and Valeri are bot appointed, while Rocchi will at as VAR on friday !!! What does it mean ? Fifa WC meeting in Dubai? 2nd match next thursday in CL or nothinf?

    1. UEFA refs meeting is after 19th March or something like that I heard !!

      Delete
    2. Valeri and Irrati are not appointed in serie A on this week end. This means that they will attend the FIFA Seminar in UAE, starting from 12/03. Based on what we heard, the seminar will be split in two sessions. The first one (12-16/03) will include trios from America, Asia and Ocenia, the second one (19-23/03) the ones from Europe and Africa. However, it seems as some VAR specialists (Irrati, Valeri and Gil among others) have been called already for the first session (I don't know whether they will be there for the second session).
I'm looking for further infos, but that's should be the situation at moment.

      Delete
    3. Gil will be present at the second seminar, too. So, I would assume that all European VAR specialists will be present at both VAR seminars.

  17. Kehlet is using the new Adidas outfit! Not in the case of Turpin, Mateu and Vincic.

31' Well done by Kehlet. Diego Costa was offise, but he did not make gesture to play (consciously) and referee held on to blow the whistle.

  18. 33' Atletico - Lokomotiv: excellent decision by Kehlet, a well spotted simulation.

  22. Minute 48' Borussia - Salzburg: penalty to Salzburg assigned by AAR1. The situation occurred right in front of him, at the edge of penalty area, but it looked like it was outside the box!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. A very difficult situation. The fouled player was already inside the penalty area but he was being pulled for hand and it's almost impossible - even having slo-mo replay - to say whether the pulling stopped before the line or on the line. I would back Obrenovič in this case.

      Delete
    2. https://streamable.com/h2ajx (0:26)

The Dortmund player still has a hold of the Salzburg player when he puts his foot inside the penalty area. Surely that means it's a penalty?

      Delete
    3. Nope. The place where the defender grabs an opponent's hand does matter not the position of fouled player.

      Delete
    4. Holding stopped before the line, so a free kick should've been awarded instead of penalty kick, but let me say, how one can expect the AAR getting this right? He couldn't see things through someone's body.

      https://pasteboard.co/HaZvpXq.png

      Delete
    5. Reading the LOTG: "If a defender starts holding an attacker outside the penalty area and continues holding inside the penalty area, the referee must award a penalty kick."

So if an attacker's body is in the penalty area but their arm is outside and that is pulled by a defender outside the penalty area, that is a free-kick?

      Delete
    6. On that matter Laws of the game say:
If a defender starts holding an attacker outside the penalty area and continues
holding him inside the penalty area, the referee must award a penalty kick (page 120, law 12)

    7. Great call-penalty for me. Line is a part of a penalty area and fouled player was on th line or inside the box, when defender stoped pulling him.

      Delete
  23. 48' Controversial penalty decision by Vincic. AAR clearly shouted it was penalty, BVB players claimed the foul was outside. The play's been just in front of the AAR.

    ReplyDelete
  24. 47:00 in Milan - Arsenal, I recommend you to watch the warning issued by Turpin. Firm and determined "against" the player, but not aggressive. I must admit, an outstanding development in recent months by the French.

At first glance, De Sousa had taken the correct decision: corner kick.

    2. Thanks. A pity! See how much De Sousa was convinced about his decision, he was more than sure. Then, he had to change idea, following AAR's advice. Let me be honest, in VAR's era, it is very difficult to accept such mistakes on the pitch and the figure of AAR looks useless. Even worse when they invite the referee to take a wrong decision.
Verissimo had to intervene only if 100% sure, the fact that at first he didn't communicate with referee is a signal that he was not sure about the incident. Too much time and clearly the protests by Athletic contributed to that. Sorry to say, but absolutely unacceptable from Fabio Verissimo.

      Delete
    3. Couldn't De Sousa have overruled his assistant if he was so sure?? He indeed seemed very confident...

    4. This will cost De Sousa a lot, and especially his AAR2 - I don't think we will see him again. In newest RAP strictly is said that if ref has good position and is sure about his decision, he shouldn't allow AAR to change his decision. De Sousa was absolutely convinced that he saw the incident properly and he was right - NO PENALTY! He shoved that several times, again and againg pointing to corner kick. He shouldn't allow to be influenced by his AAR, even though he was right, and he wasn't. This is the end of the season for de Sousa. In fact, I don't like his way of refereeing at all and he simply didn't deserve to be on the pitch this week. This just proved that.

  37. No words. Lack of charisma, personality, wrong wrong decision. Sousa is better positioned than AAR. How is it possible to be so coward to change a clearly gesture decision. That’s not just a crucial mistake : Sousa not deserved to be at this level. Big mistake by Refs comittee.

    2. 67’ : if there is advantage (good one indeed), Sousa had to caution n*24 at thé first stop. Cristal promising attack. Sorry but big issues for the refs...

  38. Fabio Verissimo to be Fabio Verissimo: a tragedy!
Vitor Melo Pereira if still see the matches of the Portuguese referees should be proud with your fantastic international referees.

Verissimo, Martins, Godinho and Pinheiro. All promoted to 1st category by Melo Pereira when he was chairman referees Committee in Portugal. None, none of them showed quality before and after being promoted to international.

    2. I guess it was for dissenting behaviour after the final whistle, going by these images.

  41. I can report good, expected level performances of Vinčič and Hațegan. Slovenian had a penalty incident we have already talked about and Dortmund player was angry at officials they missed an alleged foul prior to 0-2, but I would say that the no whistle was more correct than wrong. Nothing major to report regarding the game in Leipzig.
