  1. I know it's not international friendlies, but if anyone has any information on the decisive matches in AFC Asian Cup 2019 Qualification Round Three (Groups A, B & F), it would be greatly appreciated!

  2. This guy - Francoa Leteixier - has progressed impressively, reaching each year new tournament, and french reffereing at all, but it strange how this nominations are made, either by countries or Uefa, two kinds - young stars or old dogs.

    1. "Old Dogs"
A label perfectly suited for Jonas Eriksson. A referee who's best days are in his rear view mirror. Sadly his ego prevents him from doing the right and honorable thing and simply step aside. Many greats (G. Poll, M.A. Rodriguez, R. Rosetti, ect) have done this in the past when they realized that their time had come. However those that I mentioned were, are, and will always be "GREATS", while Eriksson, meh, not so much. If anything, for the good of the game. The referee committees have got to stop sending him out there. It reflects poorly on the committee. And makes it seem as if being mediocre is acceptable and tolerable.

    2. Too harsh a comment on Eriksson but overall you do have a point... Gracefully quitting and moving on at the right time fetches respect!!

    3. Sheriff. Are you okay? Only a stupid person would step aside if they are a FIFA ref and still get appointments. Eriksson doesn’t decide he is good enough for FIFA games. FIFA decides. Stupid comment.

    4. Retirement is a personal choice, we can't question on that, we can't invite a referee to do that. If a referee shows always poor performances, he shouldn't get games, Victor is right about that. People "responsible" for that is who appoint him, not the referee himself. We will see what will happen with Eriksson.
Also, I want to invite you all to moderate your words: we like to share opinions and to discuss about hot topics, but always with the needed respect. Thanks.

    5. Victor, Using your logic, R. Rosetti, C. Vera, G. Poll, M.A. Rodriguez, E. Osses, and H. Webb, all "stupid".
Stupid is continuing to go out onto the field time after time. Even though your performances leave a lot to be desired and your ability to grow or improve has become stagnant. Furthermore, having FIFA's or Bussaca's approval is no badge of honor.
Yes retirement is a personal choice. But there comes a time where a decision much be made or strongly suggested if it's for the good of the game. Or to protect and conserve what little if any prestige the referee has left. There is nothing sadder than seeing a player struggle to play when he's past his prime. The same goes for referees. Neither can continue to get by based on past glories.

Being that this is an opinion based blog. What I have stated in my previous and current comment is just that. My opinion. Disrespectful? No. Not at all. Disrespectful because you don't agree with my opinion? Yeah that might be the reason for you or others.

  3. Regret to say this, but Ovidiu Hațegan absolutely RUINED Romanian Derby which took place between CFR Cluj (1st place) and Steaua (2nd).

min '37 - incorrect penalty for CFR Cluj, ball hit player in shoulder. Former FIFA ref Ion Crăciunescu said on live TV he would have never awarded penalty for this.
    https://streamable.com/1p30e

min '58 - missed penalty for CFR Cluj
    https://streamable.com/m63pa

min '64 - red card for CFR Cluj player, however before the foul it seems there was a missed handball at Steaua player #7
    https://streamable.com/9zfcw (0:34)

min '72 - very soft straight red card for Steaua #5, no intention to harm the opponent, he even seems that he tried to avoid stepping on him.

nd to end on a positive note, FIFA ref Radu Petrescu (34 yrs old) has just returned this month to refferee matches in Romanian Liga 1, after he underwent brain surgery. His last match was in July 17, Dundalk vs Rosenborg in UCL Qualifying, game after which Petrescu accused severe pain in the back of his head.

    1. ”37 ball clearly hits his arm not the shoulder but it doesn’t matter because it’s clearly not deliberate and a whistle should not be used.

      Delete
    2. ”64 not deliberate handball and it doesn’t matter if you call that before. The other foul still must be punished with a yellow card.

    3. Thanks for the detailed info about Radu Petrescu, a very good news, and thanks also for the videos about Hategan game. In any case, I don't like too much to read terms like "referee ruined the game..." and so on.
We can talk about a poor performance, a bad day, but nothing is done deliberately.
Having said that, for me there are indeed at least 3 mistakes, 2 of them very clear. Wrong penalty for handball, the ball touches the arm (a replay is clear about that), but the arm is absolutely close to body and it is impossible to whistle such penalty. The missed penalty can be a mistake as well, but here I could leave some room for discussion, because I'm not sure about the real intensity of the contact. RC clearly wrong: here no doubts, there isn't any intention by player to hurt the opponent / step on him.
Not the best officiating by Hategan.

    1. Thank you so much, but what about the friendly appointment for Di Bello? If he is in Spain for U19...

    2. Most likely he will be replaced...

    3. It is interesting to see that for each countries where the round is played an important observer is sent.

      Delete
    4. Most notable mention is Paul Tierney under the supervision of Marc Batta 👌

      Delete
    5. Indeed also Petrescu (back from injury, very talented referee according to his palmarés and good reports from his U19 EURO) and Pinheiro (a young Portuguese talent that UEFA needs? Although the informed comments of DA would suggest otherwise).
Some other interesting observers, but nobody else from the committee.

      Delete
    6. Pinheiro gave good indications when he reached the 1st category (2015). He did a classic this year with a positive work and few more important games. But he has a problem at the moment: it was discovered that he sent internal information about the Portuguese refereeing to a former referee and former delegate and that information was then sent to one of the main clubs.

All this was while Vitor Melo Pereira was president of the referees.
His future will depend on the trust (or not) of the current FPF referee committee.

    2. Very good appointment for Dennis Higler... He is a very promising and talented referee... One for the future Elite group!!

      Delete
    3. Higler makes (too) many mistakes in the eredivisie. I don’t see him as a future elite referee

    4. But he gets quite a lot of appointments there 🤔

    5. Is there anything information about observers of these matches?

      Delete
    6. Not from me anyway, but a great way to find full appointments (including Delegates / Observers) is by going on the UEFA Press Kits website (any match UEFA sells television rights for, you can find all appointments for):

      http://www.uefa.com/insideuefa/mediaservices/presskits/index.html

    7. I don't know if Higler will reach elite. He struggled in Holland for some seasons, bit is doing well now. He may have made some mistakes, but he got much bigger matches now, so it's seen much moee. Overall, he is a trustworthy referee.

    1. According to the laws of the game it is correct penalty. The problem is the simulation which is blatant. But clearly the defender attempts to trip him and that’s enough for a penalty. You punish the offence that happens first.

Attempting to trip an opponent=direct free kick/penalty kick. But a yellow card for simulation is more apporopriate here.

Also maybe sth interesting to write, thanks to the local commentary here in England. This match was earmarked to have VAR, but it was decided that the Spanish referees didn't have enough experience of the system (by FIFA?), so it was just a simple quartet instead.

      2. Foul, but as contact isn't strong can I think the referee can be backed, but IMO that's an "unsportsmanlike" manner of winning the ball possession, even if it's a soft push.

      3. Play on.

      Delete
    2. I think, all three decisions are in the referee's latitude (I just learned a new English word...).

Elfath seemed quick for this 2CT for failure to respect the distance, given it was a friendly, but it is correct in Law and perhaps this was a tactic throughout the match: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qZpJTNdq3VQ

Do you think Elfath can attend the WC one day @usaref? It seems USSF & CONCACAF have a lot of faith in him

    2. Of course Mikael... He is very big talent :) I think usaref will agree!!

    3. Villarreal has been, thus far, the #3 in the United States and the presumed front-runner for WC22 after Geiger and Marrufo retire.

I suppose Elfath has a chance. He probably has a better feel for the game than Villarreal overall. But Villarreal is a much better technical referee, in my opinion; I've seen Elfath have some shaky performances, even with VAR. But Elfath steadily improves in MLS. Villarreal has become a bit more erratic.

It all really comes down to how they perform in CONCACAF and which one Brian Hall likes more. The edge right now in those two categories goes firmly to Villarreal.

  41. Very soft call in occasion of the RC for DOGSO. I wouldn't have whistled it, for me not enough. However, once assessed as foul and whistled, RC is the correct disciplinary decision.
About the penalty: only the execution is shown there, if you have a video with the foul...

  42. Buquet okayish in POR-NED. Good reaction on respectless behaviour from Tete (I liked that), bit soft 2nd yellow on the first quick view. Not really consistent in his approach.

Oh, and... 4 times people on the field. Quite a scandal.

    ReplyDelete
  43. 1. For me not only a very soft call, I would say even it's a wrong call. There's a minimum contact, player still runs for a few moments and then goes down. Play on would have been the right call in my view.
    2. Correct penalty, the defender trips his opponent on his right foot.

    6. Very difficult to spot, I agree... Absolutely not any glaring obvious mistake as some are suggesting... I give every benefit of doubt to the AR here... Saw a replay of the PK situation and I'm very much with no penalty... Rather not punishable handball I would say!!

As Victor said. I think Eriksson missed the incident as the whistle came quite late.

      Delete
    6. Oh yes, that's a clear missed RC... Eriksson is quite far away and not in a good position to see that so he had not the proper perception of the incident... Not sure how much it was within the AR's view but overall it's an error by Eriksson which were now seeing again and again and again matches after matches!!

      Delete
    7. Dudes from FIFA and UEFA will say "moderate force" and "one can issue a red card but it's not an obvious error". We'll see something like that at the WC, I'm sure.

      Delete
    8. Clear RC but impossible to spot for the referee, even more if he is so far away like Eriksson was. Stuff for VAR, I hope that at WC this kind of challenges will be always punished by a straight RC, but knowing Busacca I have my doubts.

      Delete
    9. I agree that due to "endangering the safety of an opponent" it is a RC by the book.
But personally (as a spectator), I would not like RCs in such situations, because it is more an accident, which is difficult to avoid for the offender (contrary to high intensity sliding tackles or straight leg SFPs, which surely could be avoided), because it is just part of his running movement. So I don't really see guilt there, which makes a RC seem harsh.
Anyway it surely would be helpful, if FIFA would communicate, what they want there to have at least a common interpretation among referees and VARs.

  52. Eng vs Ita: minute 82. The player is ”injured” and off the field. Before the throw in he rolls inside the field intentionally so Aytekin will stop play. Aytekin gives him a yellow card.

Great job and I said that he should get a yellow before Aytekin showed it. I like Aytekin’s tomerance level.

    1. Excellent decision by Aytekin in this case!
Unsporting behavior by English player who deliberately joined the pitch while lying down, in order to make the referee stop the play.

  53. Minute 85' ENG - ITA penalty assigned to Italy after VAR review.
Correct: Aytekin had missed a clear contact between the feeet of defender and attacker.
To add, Rosetti is at stadium and today there was a VAR workshop in London with many representatives from all interested federations.

    1. Even with the scoreline of 5–1 he's struggling?? Although it's nothing new, Taylor always struggles in heated games but in a friendly I wouldn't expect that to happen!!

      Delete
    2. Yes. Very tough fouls in the last minutes. Mass confrontations. Not a good management at all. A scoreline 5/6-1 is usually more difficult to manage for the referee... specially if the team winning is the home one and their fans are saying "ole" with each pass. That makes players from the away team angry and they foul tougher. To be honest, Taylor didn't do well at all, not the management to expect from an Elite referee.
