From UEFA, I think, Mazic deserves it the most. Rocchi might be an alternative though. As UEFA-VAR I predict Makkelie, if it's only one.
ReplyDeleteRather wild guesses for the other confederations
AFC: Adham Makhadmeh (JOR)
CAF: Mehdi Charef (ALG)
CONCACAF: Oscar Moncada (HON)
OFC: Abdelkader Zitouni (TAH)
Zitouni is no longer in OFC ! He cames back in France :)
DeleteIs Zitouni referring regularly in Ligue 1 ? As main referee ?
ReplyDeleteI think that, inside a global vision, it doesn't make sense to keep OFC confederation; it should be included into AFC like Australia did some years ago.
I don't know where he is officiating but for sure not in Ligue 1.
DeleteZitouni is actually refereeing at 5th National Level (N3) !
DeleteList of match officials :
ReplyDeletehttps://img.fifa.com/image/upload/bieyfznnvjl2h43wesuw.pdf
Rocchi's appointment could be read like Proença's in 2014; maybe Italian could even whistle his last match in the United Arab Emirates.
ReplyDeleteIn any case, clear his appointment not in relation to Qatar 2022.
It is quite sure that Rocchi will stay on the list, at least until June 2019, but very likely until December 2019, because he will get a derogation for officiating in serie A 2018/19 season.
DeleteAt moment we don't have many options for new FIFA referees and we have already Mazzoleni and Banti who should retire as well.
This is an OT, but I strongly suggest to watch this compilation of Martin Strömbergsson's disciplinary control in Armenia - FYR Macedonia, with many situations to evaluate, and a big leniency by the Swedish referee.
ReplyDeletehttps://streamable.com/aoj55
I'm downloading this video to wach it even more carefully.
DeleteMy detailed analysis will follow, as for now, I just want to thank you for your work.
I just saw the clip and 2 situations stand out IMO:
Delete10'Crystal clear YC,perfect example what is bookable offence. How was that bot YC I have no idea.
79'IMO RC.
Not at all looking at the ball, just looking at the player to brought him down.Fortunately player was not injured, but who knows maybe that had impact on referee's decision.
After having watched the video, I must say that my first thought is "this game would have been difficult for all referees".
DeleteThe behavior of players is for sure disgraceful and against the fair play. This should be taken into account as first consideration. Then, in this context, for sure Strombergsson was weak. Despite of a very good foul detection, he failed in assessing all the incidents properly under the disciplinary point of view. We can mention the blatant missed YC in 10', that is more than clear. I really can't understand why he didn't book the player. This was something like a "key mistake", because with a YC issued, an early signal would have been given. Then, without listing all the other incidents, I think that two straight RC should have been shown. Assessing the performance this means two crucial mistakes. The missed penalty is another bad signal for the Swedish crew: I think that AAR1 Pandzic should have helped referee there. At a certain point of the video, in second half, I had the impression that all players felt free in doing wat they wanted to do without any authority on the pitch. This is a very bad signal.
My final consideration is therefore the following: game would have been difficult for all referees there, as stated before, but Strombergsson contributed to a very poor show. He should have shown more cards, he didn't read the game properly.
I would have preferred to see this game ended for missing the legal number of players, than to see how it ended with only one RC for second YC. This was a very weak performance and I think we wont see again the Swedish until December.
First of all I'm happy to see that Viktor Kassai is confirmed ion the FIFA list. It would too harsh and really unfair to exclude him from international match. What about Peter Solymosi ? I was convinced he was in the FIFA list.
ReplyDeleteThen as Italian, I agree with Chefren on the fact that in Italy we are missing a new top level generation; after Rocchi and Banti (last one not at level of Collina, Braschi, Rizzoli etc) dismission it's really hard to find new comers with high profile. I think that Italy is facing a crisis on new generation
Finally, IMO (but this is just my idea) 2018 CWC will see a pool of referees very low level; among the 6 appointed I don't see a top level one: A. Charef and Sato are in the international scenario since short time, but never shown a clear high level, Marrufo is a question mark, Conger good but with low experience, Sampaio never reached Ricci's performance. The only top level could be rOcchi even if IMO he is not at level of Brych, Skomina, Cakirm, Kuipers an so on. low level this year
I would not call the level at the CWC that low: Charef, Sato and Marrufo are the best (considering FIFA appointments) referees of their confederation among those, who have not been at a previous CWC. Conger is OFC's No 1. Rocchi is the second best UEFA option (behind Mazic) under the same condition.
DeleteAll officials have participated in the WC in some role.
And it makes sense to choose referees, who are still eligible in 2022 (all except Rocchi).
I prefer this selection over having e.g. Faghani, Gassama, Geiger, Pitana and Cakir again and again.
I am not against Rocchi but I mean why not Mazic, it was the last chance for the Serbian, and some variety on nationality could be a good thing...
DeleteTwo referees born 1993, one 1992... well done!

Guida with city of Milan's derby. A very good start of season for him so far, and it is not a coincidence that he made also his EL group stage debut after 4 years as Category 2 referee. Always Irrati as VAR for Italian big games.

Well i guess it's well paid...
DeleteI would like to know what they get for one match? Probably depends on the name of the ref but I heard Eriksson got about 110 000 dollars when he did it.
DeleteReally shocking to notice that Saudi referees have been removed from all duties. Even officials from Bahrain and Kuwait...
DeleteBravo Clattenburg! Keep up the amazing job working with Saudi referee's!
Delete"For one match... But I heard Eriksson got about 110 000 dollars when he did it"
DeleteAbsolutely wrong information :)
After all what's happened in Belgium, I saw a solid performance from Alexandre Boucaut in Club Brugge - Waasland Beveren tonight, what was especially important with a heavy medial focus on the refereeing.
ReplyDeleteWell done to him and his team.
Question for Quilava, pita falta and other LaLiga followers: next weekend we have El Clásico. What are your bets for the referee? I think it will be Undiano (last season). Based on previous appointments this season, it should be possible for Undiano, Mateu, Gil Manzano, Hernández Hernández, Sánchez Martínez and de Burgos Bengoetxea. I would discard Gil Manzano (has a match this weekend and has already had too many top clashes this season) and Hernández Hernández (has had two in the last two years and last season he didn't do well).
ReplyDeleteI would like to see either Mateu or Martinez.
DeleteMateu is one of the best (if not the best) referee in Spain, his last El Clasico was in 2015 so maybe he will get it this year.He has his unique style and that is what I like about him.He will not change his style even if in question is Messi,Ronaldo,Neymar ir some other top stars.
We also have Sanchez Martinez who had last year's El Clasico and he was very good at that match with 2 key decisions where he showed red to Carvajal and gave pen to Barca. And there was another situation where Ramos hit Suarez. He choose to show him YC,but it was in a very agressive way that Ramos understood who was "the boss"on the field. That approach calmed Ramos for the rest of game so I really liked Martinez performance in that match.
Good question. Undiano I think he could make the next Clasico if it will be a ranking not decisive. Otherwise Gil Manzano will do it. In my opinion next week there will be Sanchez Martinez.
DeleteI think Undiano will referee the Copa del Rey Final, it's being a usual thing to assign it to a referee who's retiring that year, like Medina Cantalejo in 2009, Mejuto González in 2010, Clos Gómez in 2017, it's known CTA wanted to give it to Fernández Borbalán last year but it was impossible as Sevilla (Andalusian team) qualified.
DeleteSo, or next week Clásico, I would discard (among the FIFA referees) Sánchez Martínez because he handled 2 last year, Hernández Hernández because is handling a Clásico every season since 2015, De Burgos Bengoetxea because since his performance in Supercopa 2017, Real Madrid put him the "cross", and Estrada Fernández & Del Cerro Grande because they just can't handle a Clásico because geographical reasons.
So, taking in account he's being quite trusted by both CTA-RFEF and UEFA I'd say Martínez Munuera could be a good choice this time, along with Undiano Mallenco. A clásico in October could be a safer choice for Undiano because that makes it less "decisive" than a Clásico in March/April. Problem is, both Real Madrid and Barcelona are in crisis.
Also, Mateu Lahoz could have a chance.
I do absolutely discard Martínez Munuera: he will be in the middle this weekend with Barcelona - Sevilla. Two consecutive weekends with the same team and in two very relevant matches is impossible, IMO.
DeleteOops, forgot it.
DeleteWhat about Munuera Montero? He's becoming FIFA referee in January, could be a possibility...
Delete@George Also he had Real-Atletico ,another big match so that would be too much IMO.
DeleteI thought of him also, but why rush him if he will become FIFA in January? Many seasons still for him.
DeleteAnd the Clasico goes to.....Sanchez Martinez !!!!
DeleteSpanish referees have a big problem with handling criteria, seriously.
ReplyDeleteHow was Alba's handball not been given a penalty?
DeleteNot deliberate, no eyes on the ball. And the arm went up only after the force of the all.

ReplyDeleteDoes anyone know, what is the most correct way to describe Bamlak Tessema Weyesa with one name (as it is "Mateu" for Antonio Mateu Lahoz)?
ReplyDeleteI found this, but it doesn't really help: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naming_conventions_in_Ethiopia_and_Eritrea
I guess Tessema is the main surname, Bamlak the given name and maybe Weyesa a second surname.
DeleteFIFA.com reports him as Bamlak (name) Tessema (surname).
https://www.fifa.com/development/education-and-technical/referees/association=ETH/index.html
In the official communication of the replacement, FIFA doesn't report the reasons of this choice.

Funny that the title of the document is "CANDIDATES FWC2010". Someone has used an old template there...
DeleteIn addition, Makkelie and Irrat's dates of birth have been wrongly switched.
DeleteIf anyone is interested, I just wrote a report on Ivaylo Stoyanov (UEFA 2nd Cat.) officiating the Eternal Derby of Bulgaria between CSKA Sofia - Levski Sofia.
ReplyDeletehttps://kronikasedziowska.blogspot.com/p/cska-sofia-levski-sofia.html
I managed to watch Kosovo - Azerbaijan, handled by Benoît Millot.
ReplyDeleteFully convincing performance by the Frenchman. 1H was quite tough, but utilising really sophisticated management skills (eg, https://streamable.com/qb13o), a smart disciplinary control and a very good foul detection, referee solved it well. 2H was relatively academic. He justified UEFA's trust to send 'only' a 2nd Cat. to such an important match.
Perhaps UEFA appoint him with a quite important observer in EL R5/6, and he can even be promoted by the start of next year to UEFA First Category.
Well done Mr Millot!

Anthony Gautier took charge of Derby du Rhône last night, and refereed it well. He presented himself as football's friend with a lot of delayed whistles and a lenient approach (reminded me a little on Stark).
He also took an excellent decision to send off Rafael for this Serious Foul Play tackle:
https://streamable.com/a7bpx
I also watched the Derby du Rhône, he did really well yesterday in a game that was not so demanding as one could have expected.
DeleteThere was a situation as well around minute 83, where Saint-Etienne were appealing for a penalty, maybe if you have that scene as well.
RC for Rafael was fully correct and Rafael's statement to the press on the RC made me laugh: "I have watched the video ten times since. For me, if you look the camera from behind, le guy is not even on the ball. For me there is no foul." :D
Here's the penalty appeal:
