  1. So Hațegan as last minute replacement for Turpin, he should be injured. He has been replaced in Ligue 1, as reported here on the blog.
At the same time, a very good signal for the Romanian. István Kovács debut has been confirmed as well.
Karasev the only Elite referee in Europa League.

    1. No appointment either for Turpin in next Ligue 1 matchday. So he should be injured...😟

    2. I found some infos about Turpin-Hategan

    3. Well, we have the confirmation, but it was quite clear.
I notice that Romanian sport press is very interested in reporting refereeing news, differently from other countries.
This had already happened with the news of István Kovács appointed for his CL debut.

    4. Ioan Craciunescu, who had a final in Champions League, and was the romanian head of referee, doesn`t like referees Ovdiu Hategan and Istvan Kovacs. In the TV shows, for some minor mistakes he criticised excesive the referees. And I think that will be some change in the group referee from Romania. Seebastian Coltescu who is in secon class, and is 41 years will be relegate in the third class and replaced with Horatiu Fesnic, who have 29 years.

      Delete
    5. Thanks for this explanation, indeed I was about to ask why Craciunescu was against Kovacs... I don't like this attitude!

      Delete
    6. Mr Craciunescu was against all the referees who was not promoted by him when he was the romanian chief of them. he also had a favourite referee who now is at the end of refereing and that is Alexandru Tudor who is 47. He made a lot of mistakes, but Craciunescu backed him. I like how Kyros Vassaras, who is not loved by the romanian newspaper, rise our young referee. A very good referee and I like his style is Andrei Chivulete who is only 31 years and soon he will be in the FIFA list. By the way, I am from Romania too.

  2. Good assignment for Makkelie. What triggers me here is the assignment of Lindhout as AAR2. Is this a signal that he is considered as a new FIFA referee after one of the other dutch refs will retire?

    1. I think Kamphuis is one step forward than Lindhout. Kamphuis will be the first to replace an other Dutch ref. Kamphuis has officiate more matches of Ajax and PSV and Lindhout last Saturday Ajax for the first time.
IMO the number of matches of Ajax and PSV whistled is good indicator.

    5. WoW, huge mistake from my side. I wrote “Stadion” instead of stadium.

  3. So we have two referees at least in each round with debuts . Nice thing to see this happen and It was rare to see this in collina's era. Hategan now lives great times with big matches. Kassay maybe be candidate for UEL final

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think there are referees which deserve the UEL Final more than Kassai.

      Delete
    2. Turpin or Marciniak, maybe Rocchi if he keeps on the list until the end of the season.
      CL final definitely Skomina

      Delete
    3. It's impossible to say who will whistle the finals. One (big) mistake and you are out of everything. Best example: Hategan in Northern Ireland- Switzerland (btw, romanian press suggested that Hategan was a preety sure name for WC before that play-off). Otherwise, Skomina didn't start in a good way this season. He should be careful if he wants to whistle CL final.

  4. There is a big resonance in ukrainian media after Kassai`s appointment for Shakhtar`s match. After disallowed goal at UEFA EURO 2012 match between Ukraine and England!

    1. Still thinking to EURO 2012... I can't believe that. So, it seems as this is the first time that Kassai meets again a team from Ukraine after that date?

    2. Yes, Chefren! This is the first match between Kassai and the Ukrainian teams after 6 years

      Delete
    3. Currently, there is a political war at the level of verbal altercation between Hungary and Ukraine.

      Delete
    4. I agree with you, Lde! But fortunately, there is no any mention about this in sports media.
So, i hope that Kassai will show his best level(2010-2011) in Manchester today.

    5. Well' I think reactions in Spain are even worse after Aytekin appointed to Viktoria Plzen-Real Madrid.

Lots of Madrid fans are angry because they still remember Aytekin's wrong decisions in Barcelona-PSG, and thought he was "kicked out" (sic) of UEFA refereeing after that match (LOL).

    6. It is difficult to explain things to people who are not refereeing experts...

  5. A very important evening for romanian refereeing. For the first time in the history (as far as I know) we will have 2 refereees in the same day of Champions League. Since 1995 (when Craciunescu whistled the CL final) we had Corpodean (1 game), Tudor (1 game), Balaj (2 games), Hategan and Kovacs (debut this evening). Since 1995 until now the most important game seems to be the 2017 Hategan's SF in EL (Manchester United- Celta Vigo).

    1. I think that this reflects the good job that is being done in Romanian refereeing.

I hope that, one day, we can see 2 greek referees on CL. But I don't think that it will ever happen.

  6. Minute 4 (I think): very promising attack denied to Valencia in what in the replay I saw seemed a wrong offside decision. It was almost a goal disallowed.

    ReplyDelete
  7. The game is starting to get heated… Kovacs must be careful now.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Minute 25' in Moscow: penalty appeal by CSKA in front of AAR1. Correct decision to play on, however quite blatant mistake to assign a corner kick. Last touch had been made by attacker. This happened very close to AAR1, I can't believe that he missed the touch.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Kovacs with a possible second YC... game is quite challenging in Valencia.

    1. Are you talking about 13 Ngamaleu (32nd minut) ?

    2. Yes and then after that, the same player made a third foul. Now the coach will replace him...

      Delete
    3. Spot on. The player has been replaced.

  10. Possibly missed foul prior to Young Boys' equalizer.

  11. Sorry, but Kovacs management is simply horrible tonight and the impression it gives is that he doesn't deserve to be in UCL.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. All I can say in this moment is the fact that I really hope Kovacs will carry out this game to a good end.

      Delete
  12. Already Kovacs showed 5 bookings.
Hard to imagine that in this game we wont see RC.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Half time and I elaborate my previous comment.

Foul criteria is not really clear, but acceptable. However, the card line is not (YB #13 has made enough fouls and infringed the LoTG in enough ways to deserve a second caution), and specially the way he manages his decisions is absolutely unacceptable at this level. He whistles fouls more than 5 seconds after they happen (handball 33', fully correct, with cooperation, but the referee must see it and if not, should not look so unsure as he looked; also, a foul later for Valencia in which, by the time he whistled, an opportunity for advantage had already appeared). His management of advantages is really poor either (previous parenthesis, and a situation in which a Young Boys' player blocked a Valencia one during a counter-attack, but the ball was not close to the incident and Valencia had a good chance to counter-attack). Player management and acceptance is also poor. Many dissents from players, a booking for a push in a corner that could have been avoided with better management. To me, he looks far too nervous and if things go like this, he will have trouble on the second half.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Really challenging debut for István Kovács, now at HT.
Young Boys were trying to tactically 'kill' the match from the start, and Valencia playing passionately in a match that ought to win. In my opinion, referee never really found the balance between these two factors, allowed YB a bit too much (eg no YC at 21' for a reckless tackle), and managed to irritate Valencia (first YC for them at 21' for a careless foul, unluckily missing big advantage for VAL at 17'). After this, actors played very nervously, making it very hard for the referee to pick out the fouls and true reckless tackles, and calm this match down.
Add into that a referee that never really found his calm, and Romanian finds himself with a difficult second half.

Actually it is a shame IMO as Mr Kovács is quite a prospective referee, but he might have missed his big chance tonight...

    ReplyDelete
  15. 2-1 by Roma offside but difficult to spot for AR.
Cakir should have informed him that Dzeko had touched the ball. Impossible to see from AR's position. Otherwise, on the original pass, player who scored was in regular position. Crucial mistake.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Unfortunately these things will not be detected without VAR. I also had my doubts about VAR, but more and more it is becoming an unavoidable reality.

      Delete
    2. On the first pass the player was already offside. Clear on replay. His foot is off.

      Delete
  16. Correct straight RC by Kovacs. In the same way I said in the first half that the level was too low, I have to say now that the performance has improved much in the second half, also helped by the current result.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. 2nd half was decent until now (still some problems in foul detection, maybe a card). The problem is the 1st half. I will write more things in the night. I'm romanian , it's difficult for me to criticise Kovacs but his performance from 1st half was really awful

      Delete
    2. https://streamable.com/9c95b

      Delete
    3. For sure he will learn from this game. At least there weren't clear crucial mistakes and Valencia won. Swiss side played too dirty in first half.

      Delete
    4. I basically agree, UEFA will appoint him again in CL. I don't think he showed to be an inadequate referee for this level, but rather having 'one of those days'; shit happens. I am still convinced Kovács has a big talent.

If his CL match is like that 1H, there could be a bigger problems though...

In hindsight, UEFA might have swapped Romanian with Jug in München.

      Delete
    5. Hmmm... possible 2nd yelow for Ngamaleu, foul prior the goal of Young Boys. Main problem is not about a possible crucial mistake, but is about the (bad) impression he made (unfortunately, it seems he's not ready for CL)

      Delete
    6. There was a possible wrong offside denying a goal (the whistle came before the shot, but nothing would have changed). Maybe DutchRef can find it. It was minute 4 (I posted it above). I'm not sure, I only watched one replay and I was not really paying attention to the game yet. Thanks!

      Delete
    7. Probably the observer will give credit. It was very hard to detect I watched a single re-play and I can't say if it was offside or not.

      Delete
  17. Just switched to Valencia-Young boys game,

Great decision by the referee to send off Young boys player with a straight red. Very high and dangerous tackle.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Another one that should rewatch and rethink about his decisions tonight is Roberto Rosetti. Was it an appropriate match for a debut? Really? After the first leg? Considering Valencia's current form (yes, that has to be taken into account too. The name is not the most important thing)? Rather not. A very experienced first group or an Elite was necessary here tonight. Development is good. Uncontrolled development is not. It leads to these kind of things.

    1. Against ukrainian club....it`is shocking

      Delete
    2. Incredible. I don't know how many chances Kassai will get on the level after having some crucial mistakes in CL during the previous seasons.

      Delete
    3. Maybe this was for sure the last chance. This penalty is not acceptable at this level. I don't know whether AAR was involved there but still a very poor decision.

      Delete
    4. Kassai unfortunately wasn't in an ideal position to see it properly. If he moves a few meters left he would have had a better sight on the incident.
      Nevertheless, huge mistake.

      Delete
    5. Can we say these are last months for Kassai in elite category?

      Delete
    6. Maybe he'll get another chance with VAR next seasons...

      Delete
    7. Absolute disgrace by kassai. He should not referee a CL match after this.

      Delete
    8. Also a disgrace by Sterling. How many times will his blatant dives go unpunished. UEFA must put a foot down and ban him and others like him for 2 matches. Disgusting.

      Delete
    9. I thought most stunning PK call of this CL was Gil Manzano's one in Gelsenkirchen.

But here, defender is nearly a meter away! It's kind of a demotion-worthing mistake, like Bebek in Braga-Fenerbahce. And specially for his AAR.

      Delete
    10. Wow i just the incident, how the AAR can't see it too?

      Delete
    11. Wouldn't call it a dive as it didn't look like he appealed for a penalty. But he should be ashamed of himself not owning up to the referee. And the ref should've realised something was wrong with the Shaktar players reactions and asked Sterling if he was touched or not.

      Delete
    12. I was really convinced that after Burnley - Olympiacos, Kassai was back on a high level...

Even looking into the past, a comment on The Third Team still resonantes to me when talking about the Hungarian - 'He is a good referee in two out of three matches' - in my opinion this hits the nail.

By the way, if anyone doesn't appreciate what a 'tragedy' this is (of course, it is no real tragedy compared to 'real' life) then please watch, his CL Final, Italy - Spain Barcelona - Milan or Germany - Italy.
What a great referee (on his day).

      Delete
    13. @michael this is the definition of a dive.

      Delete
    14. Mikael W
You’re right: at his day he was one of the top refs. His days are gone now. Imho after Real-Bayern he should have been removed from top refs, now he’s been given a new chance. Thanks Viktor for your best days but that’s enough

      Delete
    15. Terrible mistake but AR1 and AAR should have clearly helped Kassai there

      Delete
    16. One of the worst decisions I've ever seen. Penalty was given by referee but AAR should have said no.

      Delete
  22. Jug whistled a penalty to Bayern for holding, there were at least three holding in the box.

    ReplyDelete
  23. OMG, just saw Kassai's penalty. This is one of the worst PK decisions in last few UCL seasons. Feel sad for him but his performance after Euro isn't on UCL level.

    ReplyDelete
  24. 4 yellow cards already in Benfica-Ajax, all of them correct. Good performance by Rocchi so far.

    ReplyDelete
  25. In my opinion, Ovidiu Hațegan has arrived as a real top class referee.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Agree, starting from last season, he’s now at a great level!

      Delete
  26. I know most of you won’t like what I’m going to say but...
After many many bad performances, Kassai is still appointed in UCL. I’ve also read some comments talking about a chance for him to get the UEL final. He stopped refereeing at his level at least four years ago. Now it’s time for him to get demoted, this PK is literally shocking, to be honest. Sad to say but this is what I think.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Croatian referee expert Marijo Strahonja (ex cat 1 referee) just said it is last November for Kassai as elite referee. And we must agree with him...

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. He is really something refreshing to see on CroTv,he provides much more info about referees than Beusan.

      Delete
    2. Well, Strahonja was terrible referee... His performance in Tripolis-Sparta in EL group stage 2015/2016 was one of the worst I've ever seen...
Kassai will get demoted probably, this penalty is really shocking...

      Delete
  28. I feel sad for Kassai.
One of top refs that has great style of refereeing but has fallen so badly.

    ReplyDelete
  29. About a possible demotion for Kassai. One must mention again Eriksson.
If the Swedish was never demoted after many and many crucial mistakes he did in his games, the same should be for Kassai. Both are top level referee with a more than decennary experience. The natural solution for Kassai would be retirement, but I don't think he will be demoted.
For sure, committee can change idea by managing this situation differently, but this would be unfair... Kassai has been among the top UEFA referees ever.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Kassai wouldn't become the first nor the last UEFA referee simply getting by based on past glories. So nothing new here.

      Delete
  30. Do you think that Sterling could be punished for the simulation?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. In my opinion, not a simulation. Sterling tripped on the ground. He didn't want to win a penalty, or at least one can't be sure about that.

      Delete
    2. Well, if you are convinced! It would have been interesting to see player's reaction after the fall, but Kassai whistled even too early! :) We will never know.

      Delete
    3. I’m not convinced too. He trips, that’s right, but why didn’t he tell Kassai it was not a penalty?
Moreover I’m not sure he trips by chance, to me it looks like he intentionally trips

      Delete
    4. I don’t see it as simulation. He tripped by mistake. Nevertheless he should 100% be ashamed for not admitting there was no contact.
Only a a gentleman would do that. Few players are...

      Delete
    5. I understand that he tripped over his feet. But he certainly exagerrated his fall! Throwing his hips and arms out especially. I think he understood he was falling and thought he might as well try to sell it as a penalty! While his intention may not have been to dive, there was embellishment for sure and thus simulation.

      Delete
    6. If as referees you are waiting for players to be honest and fair. Get ready for a very long wait. Kassai whistled a totally and complete phantom PK. The fault land squarely at his feet. Delusional to think that Sterling was going to tell Kassai that he had commited a major blunder.

  31. Makkelie solid so far. One YC very soft.

How Aytekin could completely ignore a Ramos foul on Havel (player was bleeding severly after being hit in the face and had to be taken off) remains his secret.

    1. And now a 2nd YC that has been coming for 30 minutes. Correct of course.

  32. Correct second YC and goal disallowed for offside by Makkelie

  33. IMO correct or at least supportable 2nd YC by Makkelie.

  34. Maybe missed RC for Ajax defender?

    ReplyDelete
  35. Just saw the penalty of Kassai. I am sorry, but even at an amateur level I would say that if I gave a penalty for this, a demotion would almost be deserved....

Am I exaggarating? Maybe a bit. But this decision is shocking. No referee should give a penalty for this, it's really obvious.... But say that he was in a wrong position to see it. Where is the coorporation within the team? Where was the input of the AAR? or even de AR?
If Bebek was demoted for a match in which he made a clear mistake, Kassai should be demoted for sure. This mistake is so blatant, so impossible to explain... I guess that even a VAR would be so surprised about this decision, that he would not interfere.

How and why? And what happened to Kassai? I don't even like his body language at the penalty.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. We must agree that Bebek deserved demotion, but it is unacceptable and unfair that he is 3 years without UCL match.

      Delete
    2. An answer is very simple. Kassai has a lot bigger reputation than Bebek.

      Delete
    3. I don't know. If you've worked for years earning a promotion, do you deserve a demotion after 2 bad matches? However, over-all I tend to agree with both of you.

However, how long can someone go on just on reputation? He has had okay performances, but were they on ELITE level? Or were they just okay?

      Delete
    4. In UEFA, a referee's reputation and past glories can mask/cover up multiple bad performances.

      Delete
    5. I dind't say it's fair, just said the reason.

      Delete
    6. I don't even think Bebek really deserved his demotion.
He f*cked up in Madrid yes, but his performance in Braga - Fenerbahce wasn't actually that bad. Two of the three RCs were actually excellent decisions, and IIRC Spanish observer even backed him on the penalty & 2nd YC.
His problem was that he was too brave; UEFA should have stood by him.

Circa his demotion, it would be only a dream to expect to make a third spelling CL, Rosetti is looking to future, unfortunately Bebek rather isn't that.

  36. Excellent ONSIDE by AR2 in Turin for Juventus goal.

    1. It did non look like a VC, more a reaction (tripping the player). I think RC was too much, good decision imho

  38. What happened in JUV-MUFC? Both Dybala and Herrera were booked, lots of complaints from Juventus player to Hategan.

  39. Very good decision for AR before Utd second goal. For me, this decision is harder for AR then situation with Ronaldo (Juventus goal).

Bunch of players, the ball was played twice, late stage of the match.
    Well done!

    3. Very good performance from Ovidiu Alin Hategan.

  41. I expected to see Hațegan in a top clash in the Nations League with a comitee Member and i bet he will be in Anfield for Liverpool-Napoli clash in lăsat round. After very good games he îs favorite to be in Baku.

    1. Indeed Hategan is now a candidate for PSG - Liverpool / Liverpool - Napoli in that group.

    2. I don't want that. It's not the case to burn him from top clash to top clash. Crvean Zvezda- PSG, Shakthar- Lyon etc are safer options for him.

    3. If he shows good performance from one top match to another, there is no reason to not reward him with another one. Especially, a rising ref such as hategan. It shows that he can handle the pressure and occasion. Also, UEFA should appoint the most on form ref for these big matches.

They showed an angle on the post-match analysis where the AAR is pointing with his stick towards the penalty spot (can't have been for a goal kick) so IMO he's as much to blame as the referee.

      This is simply unbelievable.

  43. Makkelie overall with a good performance, very strict disciplinary management. One point of critique: the 1st YC for Adams, who was sent off for a 2nd was too soft.

    1. I think, when he didn't knew the player was already booked, while showing the second one. Maybe he would have missed this one...

    2. Highlites showed 1st YC for late tackle and 2nd YC for SPA.

I agree with Chefren about Hategan. He deserves a big match now.

  44. I am very sad about Kassai. I guess in next set of appointmnets either Europa League or he won't even be appointed. But as Chefren said, Eriksson had much more crucial mistakes and was never demoted, so it would not be fair to Kassai to demote him. I know that FIFA lists are already submited but it would be the best for him to retire.

  45. IMO very solid performance yesterday night in Turin by Hategan. Ready to stop any kind of hard kicks and dissent. Strong verbal communication with the players; uniform judgment and stable for the whole match. Perfect management of cards. He has been very very good in a not easy match: 8.4 IMO
The only negative point was the position in the field: too much close to the ball and often ha has interrupted the action (of course not voluntary). Good fitness but he run too much in the middle of the action.

  46. And now the negative note: Kassai
I always defeated him, because I'm an estimator of him due to his overall outstanding carrier but today it's really impossible even for me to justify his mistake. It's a pity but it's crazy ! Anyway I fully agree with Chefren: Eriksson demonstrated much more mistakes as well a very arrogant behavior and he was never demoted. It will not be fair to demote Kassai now especially with respect to his very long and outstanding carrier. He is 43, so he should re start from EL and make a farewell match in UCL before his retirement just if he will recover.

    1. I am sorry, I am only copy and paste what I wrote above

  47. Hațegan was very good last night (8,5 for my taste), actually he totally convinced me.
No doubts in my mind now, he is one of the top class referees in Europe.
His development is very impressive in my opinion. Whereas other referees stagnated (best example, Moen but also Královec, Karasev et al.), Hațegan improved so much in the last years.
The match that changed my opinion on him was Brazil - Iraq at the last Olympic games, he was stellar in a very challenging match, and since then he 'pushed on' so well.
Let's see how far he can go, it should be very far if he carries on this development and more immediately this high level of form.

  48. Interesting the facts that italian newspapers are very hard with Hațegan and give him a 5, but the english newspapers praid him and give a 7. They want a RC to Matic and a penalty who could be made by Luke Shaw.

    1. French newspapers give him a 5 too, but they don't explain why.
