  1. EL-debuts for Millot, Schärer and Ardeleanu. The latter with committee member.

    1. Not realy a debut for Schärer, this is his fourth match in EL. He had 2 last season and 1 season before.

      Delete
    2. For Schärer, it is not a debut. However, he has been appointed after the injury this time without a committee member. I really don't understand that.

    3. But if I see right, no Karasev in Europa League. Very strange....

    4. EL-Debut for Martins, too, I think?

      Delete
    5. Nope. He handled Hertha - Östersund last season.

  2. Bad signals for Karasev: he has been ruled out from all appointments this time. One could have guessed him in Rome for a quite interesting Lazio - Marseille, but Bezborodov will be there. Maybe the last performance in Frankfurt as AAR with a crucial mistake was not liked by committee. Definitely too many errors in his games.

  3. IMO top assignment for Ekberg in a very tough clash between Fenerbache and Anderlecht.
Do you see any chance for Mazeika to be promoted into elite ?

  4. Another interesting topic is Stieler. After CL appearance one year ago, he seems now "back" as regular Category 1 with only Europa League assignments. I don't know what happened, but maybe Siebert debut in Champions League can be also read under this point of view. Otherwise, with already 4 referees officiating in the major competition, this debut couldhave been at least delayed. Really sorry for Stieler who is in my opinion a quite good referee.

    1. For sure he is a lot better than Siebert.

      Delete
    2. I see Siebert definitely better, when I consider their performances in German Bundesliga!

  5. Interesting appointment on Vidi-PAOK: Palabiyik. A Turkish referee on a greek team right after Gocek handled Dudelange - Olympiakos.

I can't remember any such case in the past with a Turkish referee for a Greek team. There were a couple of observers and delegates but, IIRC, no refereeing team.

    1. They seem to be less worried about these things now. Also Dutch referees can whistle teams from Belgium now and there seem to be no more restrictions regarding the former Soviet Union (e.g. Eskov with Azerbaijan in Nations League). Not sure, whether that also counts for former Yugoslavia, e.g. whether Slovenian referees are possible for Serbian teams - I don't remember an example yet.
Also Skandinavian appointments like Ekberg for Iceland were avoided in the past, I think.

  6. I don't like Stieler at all, too fussy and card-happy in my view.

  7. Chefren, have you watched Ufa Rangers match refereed by Stieler?

    1. Also Crvena Zvezda- Krasnodar last season ...

    2. No, I didn't watch this game. Can you say more about his performance?

      Delete
    3. He showed Morelos 2 yelllow cards in successsion. After a soft foul (50/50) Morelos kicked the ball in frustration, that was a first yellow. Then he continued to show dissent but nothing dramatic... in my view confident ref would say "calm down or you 'll go" but showing second yellow for protests in 20 seconds is not good refereeing.
Morelos is stupid but it wasn't a dirty game at all, Stieler spoiled it.

      Delete
    4. Here's the video as a reminder: https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x6svloc

Morelos trips the player, kicks the ball away. Referee comes over with a YC but Morelos keeps walking away despite Stieler whistling, then gestures at him.

Maybe if more referees were like this players would learn to behave better...

  8. Your opinion on this one: Penalty? Play-on?

    1. Pro-penalty: the contact with attacker's knee is clearly careless, the ball seems to be still on the field of play at the moment of contact

Against penalty: the attacker wouldn't have reached the ball anymore.

  9. Interesting not to see Gozoboyuk appointed in Mds 3 and 4, or I missed something. And he is not appointed as AAR to Kuipers or Makellie. Anybody any info? Is he injired maybe?

    Replies
    1. He had a game in Eredivisie on last Saturday, PSV - Vitesse, so he is not injured. Maybe Eintracht - Lazio performance was not liked by committee...

      Delete
    2. No, he isn't injured. He took charge of the most sonorous match in Holland this weekend.

    1. 3 years ago, he was elite referee and unfortunately made a mistake in Madrid. Then he had a nightmare in Braga-Fener. After that his UEL matches were very good, but still there is no new chance in UCL.
I feel sad for him, 3 years without UCL match is too much...

      Delete
    2. Well, that mistake in Madrid wad product of Ronaldo's authority and presence.
And night in Braga is just sad,as his fellow Croat I wish him all the best.

  15. Petr Ardleanu handled (his first) Prague Derby between Sparta Praha - Slavia Praha at the weekend, ahead of his EL group stage debut in Piraeus, which will be observed by UEFA Referees Committee member Mr Levnikov.

I made a highlights about his performance,
    https://ok.ru/video/886307555875

=> In 1H he showed a near faultless performance IMO; Czech fully convinced me.
Only mistake was missing the foul at 28' (01:45), which could have been a 2nd YC, but personally I can accept the argument that the foul was "careless".
I really liked his rigorous card selection, especially the YC at 15' (01:04) for a studs tackle, which was a point for improvement after Latvia-Georgia under the eyes of Mr Uilenberg.
Penalty was at least acceptable, and fully correct if you judge the action as enlarging body surface and not protecting the face.

=> 2H wasn't on such a high level, my feeling was he was missing a little bit of mental strength for the full ninety-minutes, but still no big disaster (à la Lannoy in BEN-FEN, if you will). No defective performance, but it was not on such a high level like the first half.
Perhaps he missed a penalty at 73' (08:20) for handling also, I would be interested in everyone's views on that (reminded me on Pitana OFR situation in SWE-MEX a little).

I watched Ardeleanu twice in recent times and both times he impressed me in different ways. He managed to avoid bigger problems with an alert performance in Latvia - Georgia, and then showed a (half) faultless performance in the biggest match of his life in Czechia. Okay, 2H wasn't so good, but the POTENTIAL that he showed here was quite high in my opinion, and he has time to work on his mental fortitude.

I wish him well for his (deserved) EL debut in Piraeus.

  16. Adrien Jacottet from Suisse (sorry if I didn't write it correctly) will be the referee in Olympiakos Vs Panathinaikos

  17. A few days ago, Melo Pereira issued a statement and says that the foreign referees appointed to 5 greek matches, satisfied the referee's committee.

However on another part, he claims that all decisions regarding appointments, making of the lists and anything else is the responsibility of the foreign members of the ref. committee.

Obviously such statement is useless since such things are self-evident so there is no need for that. Unless that's not the truth and as we hear in Greece, Tritsonis is working closely with Melo Pereira.

In my many years on refereeing, it's the first time that I see such a statement. It's not only shocking but ridiculous.

    1. Kovács:
      1) Reckless, YC for me is enough.
      2) Reckless as well, YC correct.
      3) YC for this dissenting gesture is a good decision, this should be seen more often.
      4) 100% SFP, RC is the fully correct decision.
      5) In my view very borderline, high speed of this challenge would justify another RC.

      Collum:
      1) In my view SFP: high leg, touches the chest of the opponent. I think Collum gave YC only because of the low intensity.
      2) Correct decision.

      Kassai:
      1) I don't think we need further development on there, shocking decision.

      Kuipers:
      1) Correct penalty given here, and also the cooperation between Van Roekel and Kuipers must be praised, Thiago Silva's touch is clearly deliberate, meaning that the offside position is no longer punishable.
      2) Kuipers and Neymar: a never-ending hate story. ;) But that sarcastic applause was worth a 2nd YC in my opinion.

      Çakir:
      1) Hand is in an unnatural position, blocking the way of the ball. YC for SPA is correct.
      2) IMO this is DOGSO. Roma attacker had possession of the ball and no one could intervene there. Çakir was sort of lucky that the player was already booked, this is a clear straight RC for me.

      Rocchi:
      1) Correct YC, reckless.
      2) Also a correct YC, reckless.

      Makkelie
      1) Absolutely spot-on 2nd YC for SPA there.

    2. He is very good referee, definitely our best. I didnt like him earlier because six years ago he made crucial mistake by missing to give clear penalty in title decisive match which most probably decided who became champion that year. Besides that very good performances, especially on international level. What i dont like is the fact that in every match he has different pair of assistant referees. In Montenegro it is practice to assign assistants on match to match basis and not have permanent teams. But i am not sure who is responsible for assigning assistant referees in european competitions. I think would be good for Dabanovic if, at least on international level, he had permanent team of assistants

    2. Still cant belive that AAR nor AR didnt spot that clear no penalty or even would be catasrophic if AAR said its penalty..

      Delete
    3. @Jovan the AAR pointed his stick at the penalty spot just after the referee awarded the penalty. He'd have been more useful if he was allowed to look at his mobile phone and watch a replay.

  26. Big call in Spartak-Rangers match,77 min.,Spartak player was on a run and fell into the penalty area.
Bebek gave yc for diving, looked like very close call.
    What others think?

    1. More penalty than simulation. However, the fall of the player is quite unnatural.

    2. Well in this match were 3-4 penalty appeals,Bebek didnt gave any,he gave 2 yc's for diving and 1 handball was there if I can remember.
      Needs to be rewatched.

    3. Three penalty decisions - first half was YC simulation, IMO correct. Second half - same player already booked, Rangers player stood on his toes, maybe not enough for a foul.

Third one I think the referee got it wrong, although from some angles on the replays it looked like the player went down unnaturally as you say.

Crucial mistake in the first half by the AR to deny a goal for offside, which would have made it 4-2 Rangers.

    4. In last situation attacker clearly tried to find some contact with defender's leg and that's why his movement when he went down is so unnatural.

  27. Bebek with many crucial decisions today. Honestly, I feel several crucial mistakes to both sides. Have to rewatch this crazy match.

  29. Very good decision to allow Stade Rennais' goal due to deliberate play by defender. Good cooperation between Beaton and Ross.

  31. Any news from Millot’s match ? Must’ve been quite challenging with one red card and one PK whistled in the last minutes

  32. PK for Zenit whistled by Lechner, after clear AAR advice.

  33. Sandro Schärer left the stadium. Game is stopped in Vorskla-Qarabağ

  35. Martins didn’t impress me today. Plenty of very soft foul calls, highly questionable penalty, excessive YC. I wouldn’t be surprised if this remains his only EL match this season.

  36. Pawson with 7' of added time in Betis (he whistled at 7:20).

Anyone can tell if it's justified?

  37. I watched Mažeika live in the stadium.
In my opinion, good performance by the Lithuanian. Very good disciplinary control (including warnings and stepped approach). Correct RC:DOGSO, not the easiest decision. Maybe he missed a RC for ARL#29, but my feeling is that YC was acceptable.

I think he made good arguments for a CL inset in Round 5/6, well done to Lithuanian team.
