  1. Higler, Verissimo, Papapetrou, Frankowski, and Stoyanov are nowcomers...
How many referees will Rosetti bring to higher level?
Glad that Tohver back in here...

    1. Finally, Frankowski got his EL-debut. A bit too late, IMO, but better late than never! :)

  2. Hmm, what happened with Skomina? Only 1 UCL match and 1 UEL match this season...

    1. He still could get MD6 appointment and complete three UEFA games.

      Delete
    2. He will probably have a match on MD6. These are the elite referees with only 2 UCL/UEL matches at the moment:

      Bastien
      Kuipers
      Mažic
      Sidirópoulos
      Soares Dias
      Skomina
      Taylor
      Turpin
      Undiano Mallenco
      Zwayer
      Aytekin
      Karasev
      Kassai

      Delete
    3. If Liverpool - Napoli will be a decisive game, Skomina could be there. I don't see other options, given that the other names should be not allowed to officiate that game.

      Delete
    4. If Rosetti follow the performance principle, Sidiropoulos could be an option for NAP-LIV after his last UNL performance.

      Delete
    5. I don't know if you watched his performance in that 1 UCL match and 1 UEL match because that is really all the explanation required.

      Delete
  3. So Bebek gets another match after Spartak-Rangers,and Astana-Dinamo K is key match to determine 1st place in griup.
Looks like he UEFA was satisfied with his performance.

    1. In case of good performance, can he get CL MD6 match (some unimportant match)?

      Delete
    2. I as his fellow Croat dont think so.I think more younger refs in that case will get their chance.

  4. OT:Bebek handled match between Lokomotiva and Osijek last nightm
He had quite interesting situation where he issued RC.

    1. Indeed quite intersting. For me a border line decision. RC supportable but rather a YC IMO because the leg in not strechted when it makes contact. But of course the studs are high at hight speed

      Delete
    2. That's a very clear red card. Studs in the shin guard. Imaagine if a player doesn't have shin guards. Broken leg 100%. Clearly endagered the safety and used excessive force. What I don't like is that he also took out the yellow card. Just like in La Liga. They take out both the red and yellow card at the same time no matter if it's a yellow or red card.

    3. @victor Well, Spanish "traditional" card issuing procedure is keeping YC, RC and notepad (paper) in the same shirt pocket, with some exceptions who at least used to put the RC in the other shirt pocket (Velasco Carballo, Clos Gómez, Iturralde González, Daudén Ibáñez). Undiano also until this season, but now he's returned to the old procedure (only Spanish FIFA referee)

Now, traditional procedure it's still widely extended among both professional and amateur Spanish referees, but also lots of referees now are keeping YC and RC in each short pocket (see Mateu Lahoz, Del Cerro Grande, Fernández Borbalán, Munuera Montero, Medié Jiménez...) like I usually see in many Italian referees.

I wonder why the "all-together" procedure is so uncommon out of Spain, and why is it so frowned upon. Many Dutch referees do it but still using a proper notepad to keep the cards. I'm a grassroots referee in Spain and I keep the cards in the same way as e.g Marciniak, Sidiropoulos and Martínez Munuera, YC in short right pocket and RC in short back pocket, with notepad+pen in random shirt pocket. I believe it's more suitable to have them there in case of need of quick booking (dissent, SPA) and sending off (SFP, to avoid potential mass confrontations), also, IMO it's better like this instead of taking everything and having to choose, because the latter can increase players' pressure on referee, and also because I'm a little clumsy using my hands :D

  5. 4 Russian referees in the group stage of the Europa League with 3 in the one match day. Has that ever happened before??

  6. If you are interested in a report I made about Ivaylo Stoyanov handling Bulgaria's Eternal Derby, ahead of his EL debut, you can read it in the link below:

Thirty-years old Pavel Orel, already in the FIFA list, took charge of Slovan Liberec - Viktoria Plzeň at the weekend, and you can read about his performance below:

A question for our Czech readers- do you see Pavel Orel as a talent that could go far in UEFA refereeing?

    1. Thank you so much. I have pleasure to give my opinion about all the incidents.

      CSKA - Plzen
9' Correct or at least supportable penalty call
      13' Correct YC
      43' Correct penalty

      AEK Athens - Ajax
18' both raised legs, player from Ajax hits slightly the opponent so correct YC
29' correct YC for reckless challenge
53' another clear YC for reckless challenge
67' penalty and second YC well spotted

      Hoffenheim - Shakhtar Donetsk
First YC, as I said yesterday, maybe a bit soft, but there is room for backing referee. Second YC absolutely mandatory.

      Atletico Madrid - Monaco
54' wrong YC, clear tackle on the ball
61' deliberate act, the intensity is enough for a RC, however, oone could have still the perception of backing the referee, difficult to explain by words
82' Never deliberate handball for me, but once whistled clear YC

      PSG - Liverpool
      24' SFP, excessive force
90'+2 Player is fully aware that he is going to hit the opponent without any intent / chance to play ball. This can be RC as well but surely differently from previous situation referee can be still backed, not a 100% clear RC

      PSV Eindhoven - Barcelona
3' missed YC, I think player should have been booked this was also a reckless challenge, apart from the promising action
90'+1 clear YC for simulation, UEFA doesn't like such behaviors by player, this will be a significant mistake for referee to play on without punishing the player
90'+3 Maybe he was booked for complaints? I can't understand if referee waited for a so long time before issuing the card

      Tottenham - Inter
28' Correct YC, not DOGSO, but clearly SPA
45' Strong arguments in favor of RC with bboth legs loaded on the opponent, RC would have been surely more appropriate than YC

      Delete
    2. In defense of the ref I think the YC in 54’ was issued for the holding right before the tackle, which wasn’t shown in the replays unfortunately. If the YC was issued for the tackle it would clearly be a wrong decision.

  16. 90'+2 crucial gol by Rapid Wien in Moscow: I think crucial mistake by AR2, player looked to be in offside.

  17. Bebek was good today in not really hard match.
Fully under control,he showed 4 bookings-1 for elbow to the face,1 SPA,1 too much talking and other one was for reckles foul.
All in all, pretty good performance from him and maybe he has a chance to ehistle on MD 6 of CL some "unimportant" match.

  19. Crazy (but poor) game in Salzburg. Many fouls, especially at the beginning. Orel Grinfeld is very busy and clearly annoyed by players' behaviour. He manages things with a very authoritarian approach and many gestures. Surely a different style of refereeing but I like that.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. He totally changed his approach in the second half. Much more in the background but finally the players started to play football. As in Orel's previous games I have watched, not clear line regarding disciplinary control but overall an expected level performance. There was one penalty appeal from Salzburg side in 53'. I will try to post a video later today and full refereeing highlights (very interesting regarding body language, gestures, etc.!) tomorrow.

Marrufo has NYRB vs. Atlanta United. Atlanta lead 3-0 on aggregate.

Geiger has Sporting Kansas City vs. Portland Timbers. That tie is 0-0 on aggregate.

  22. Some rumors are reporting that Copa Libertadores second leg could be played in Spain and there would be already an agreement between FIFA and Spanish federation (it seems as FIFA overruled CONMEBOL in this decision), in addition it is even reported that in that case it will be a Spanish referee: either Mateu or Undiano.
However, I don't know how much this can be true...

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Mateu Lahoz could issue 10 YC in 20 minutes if he's appointed in a Boca-River. I think only Undiano could be a proper referee for that.

At least Spain has VAR, no need no install nothing.

      Delete
    2. TBH, best Undiano maybe, current Undiano I don't think so. However, it would be a bad decision: what about Cunha? How would he feel? It would be unfair for him.

      Delete
    3. Why not Cunha? He could travel anywhere..

      Delete
    4. If anyone from Spain ,then it should be Mateu who is best from Spain, but then again ,his temper mixed with River and Boca could also be total disaster.

      Delete
    5. Agree. I repeat, if is decided to have a Spaniard referee, it should be Undiano Mallenco. If not, maybe Del Cerro Grande, who is from Madrid and as he can't handle a Clásico, let's try with a Superclásico :D.

      Delete
    6. I don't know how 'tongue in cheek' Quilava was speaking, but if it must be a FIFA referee then I think Del Cerro Grande might be a pragmatists best option.

I don't think Mateu is the name for such a game, although his excellent (player) management of a very, very challenging Italy - Sweden would argue in his favour. Also VAR.
Undiano I agree is most suited but it would be a huge violation of the performance principle, so much as the fact he is not in good shape right now internationally.
I wouldn't really consider Gil Manzano, or anyone below UEFA First Category.

Carlos Del Cerro Grande would be a good choice IMO. He showed the ability to solve very, very challenging matches- Copa Del Rey Final 2016 eg (9,0 level). Although he might lack softer skills a bit, I don't think this is a bigger problem in CONMEBOL. One could say that is not a typical 'leader' on the pitch like Pitana, Loustau, Vigliano- for me he could still execute a South American match well.

      Full appointment could be:
Del Cerro Grande plus international ARs
      4th Official: Cunha
VAR team: Sampaio & Boscillia or Spanish team

But personally I don't believe CONMEBOL would accept this anyway :-)

    7. Los árbitros tanto de campo como de VAR son los previstos para el Monumental. Por lo tanto, el uruguayo Andrés Cunha arbitrará la final en el Barnabéu.

From what I can understand, looks like Cunha will handle this match.

      Delete
    8. I just learned the expression "tongue in cheek" :D.

Well, it's a "hot" match but indeed I was thinking on his excellent performance in Barcelona-Sevilla 2016 Copa final. The "joke" was the fact I mentioned on my comment, about Del Cerro's origins and Clásico-Superclásico.

IMO, a mixed appointed would be nonsense. RFEF can either instruct quickly Cunha and his team on how the VORs in Las Rozas work, or use a full Spanish refereeing crew with the same procedure as in an ordinary LaLiga match.

Btw, I'm not sure that "our" VORs have enough space to introduce an AVAR2 like in Libertadores. LaLiga matches are with VAR, AVAR1 and a single broadcasting operator.

      Delete
    9. @M Yes, if it comes from an official source, that means Cunha in Bernabéu.

      Delete
    10. @mikael Yes good player managment in Italy Sweden but also like 4 clear missed penalty decisions. I do not think mateu is fit for tough derby matches. He is too volatile. You never know which mateu you are going to get. If its played in Spain do the world a favor and just give it to Cakir if its going to be a UEFA ref :)

      Delete
    11. But I agree it should be Cunha.

      Delete
    12. Surely this is just bullshit from AS (only primary source reporting a Spanish officiating), and original team will be appointed from CONMEBOL.

And Cunha is better suited than all Spaniards, anyway, for my taste.

  31. And sorry but I can't understand it, Slovenian league is one of the poorest in Europe and we have 3 refs from Slovenia who are refereeing regularly big matches. Ok, Skomina deserves it though this year is not his best. But Vincic and Jug?
Nothing against Slovenia its a beautiful country but in my view its difficult for the ref from a poor league to reach high level.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. In my opinion this is not a valid argument as we have many Elite and Category 1 referees from all European countries and they are very reliable.

      Delete
    2. Jug is too inconsistent. On his best day he is an Elite referee, like in Malmö - Vidi earlier this season or U21 EURO Final. But he has too many performances not hitting the mark, and hence he is still in First Category.

      Delete
    3. We have another example were Serbian league is not great, country is small compared to other European countries and they produced great official Milorad Mazic who has officiated CL,Conf.Cup finals and many other big games(and I am Croat who is saying that btw).So that stuff about poor leagues is not valid.

      Delete
    4. I agree with Chefren and M, by the way.

At least if you talked about Mr Sajn you might have a point, but to your argument is false and one that really irritates me. If anything, 'important' FAs get too much positive treatment, like my nation, England.

Look eg. at Kristo Tohver, it is a joke that he never got in First Category. At least I am heartened that Rosetti seems to realise this now.

      Delete
    5. Vincic is another kind of ref than Jug !!!! Please....

      Delete
    6. Yes Vincic is an elite ref imo. Jug probably not. As said above, a foul in Slovenia is a foul in England. Football is a universal language so to speak. If you can detect them well in Slovenia (hopefully) you can detect them well anywhere.

      Delete
    7. Yeah but speed, intensity and in general level of football in England is 10 times higher. Again I am not against all refs from relatively small countries Mazic is a great example that you can still be excellent. But it seems strange for me that so many refs from Slovenia are getting big matches. Today Vincic and Jug were poor esp Jug but Vincic also with crucial mistake.

      Delete
    8. But the predictability and culture of play is something that helps referees in big leagues. You don't know what will happen in a next second in Polish Ekstraklasa, etc. As almost all FIFA referees are real athletes and fitness preparation is not an issue, I think refereeing in weak leagues is more difficult.

      Delete
    9. I agree with Anton's points but that is why we have the level 2 level 1 and elite tier system in refereeing to allow refs from smaller countries to progress and allow them to apply their skills and slowly gain big match experiences while going up the tiers. Especially at elite level I do not think we can say that we see a trend where refs from bigger leagues are definitely better than those from smaller leagues. I think it varies from ref to ref and game to game independent of nationality imo.

      Delete
    10. @Anton Kniazev, why do you think that Slovenian league is one of the poorest? On what ground do you say this, only because you are not familiar with the Slovenian teams or do you watch matches of the Slovenian League 1 on regular basis? The truth is that the Slovenian teams are not well renowned internationally except for FC Maribor, which was participating in knock-out phase of CL last year. And some matches in the Slovenian league turned out to be very interesting, even more than some of EL or CL matches; high tempo, lots of goals etc. Regarding the comparison of the quality of referees from smaller/bigger countries, even the latter with GLT and VAR introduced in recent years, the referees from those countries are not immune to mistakes. And the new technologies assist the referees in bigger (more football renowned and rich) countries - in their national leagues to minimize mistakes, what is of course beneficial for the game. We previously had discussions on this blog which referee is better/worse and it led to nowhere...referees are all humans and prone to make mistakes...even Brych, Marciniak, Cakir etc. had their bad days on the pitch, they are no exceptions...so please do not crucify Jug for his mistakes in this CL match..

      Delete
    11. I consider it unfair to crufify M. Jug after just one bad performance (I don't remember controversies with him in the past - very reliable refereeing) and open a debate on Sajn and Ceferin. Giving Vincic as another example for this after a crucial mistake is clearly off a reasonable debate as well. We all know everyone has a crucial mistake from time to time. In my opinion both deserve where they are, but of course UEFA must keep an eye on neutralising the high number of Slovenian referees compared to other nations.

Having said this, I would like to echo Mikael's comment on K. Tohver above. I saw him once in the stadium several months ago where he clearly showed skills that not every First Group Referee has. Difficult to understand why he was off UEFA's radar for so long. So I am also pleased to read his name in the recent appointments and hope to see him in more games in future again.

      Delete
    12. Which is the Vincic crucial error ?

      Delete
    13. Andreja, Slovenian league is 31rd in UEFA ranking https://kassiesa.home.xs4all.nl/bert/uefa/data/method5/crank2019.html Maribor participated only in the group stages and they suffered the biggest home defeat ever in the Champs League (0:7 to Liverpool). Again nothing against Slovenia as a country but club football there is very weak its a fact.

      Delete
    14. pita falta, Vincic missed a clear penalty in favour of FCK in the closing stages. Kuzyaev missed the ball and kicked FCK players leg instead.

      Delete
    15. @Anton Kniazev, it seems that your only relevant argument is the UEFA ranking, which is related to the success of teams from various countries in UEFA international matches and it does not say anything about the quality of the national leagues!

      Delete
    16. May be its not 100% accurate but it does say a lot about the quality of the league. Its the evaluation of Slovenian clubs performances in UEFA competitions in the last 5 years.

      Delete
    17. @lucac2218 I agree with you btw, Jug is one of the best referees of 1st Cat (but too inconsistent I think) and Vinčić should already be in Elite by now (and with Sajn! I can't make sense of it, he really ought to be promoted in December).

I was just commenting how much of a logical fallacy it is that referees from 'weak' domestic leagues haven't developed the skills to referee at a high level in UEFA; I agree with Vlad, if anything they are MORE prepared than their colleagues from eg Premier League.

      Delete
    18. @Anton Kniazev.. Vinic did the right decision only you saw a clear penalty https://streamable.com/29wlh

Your comments show that you are not very a knowledgeable person and at the same time you have a demeaning attitude against referees from smaller countries, especially the Slovenian referees. You are just a petty and an envious person who can't be objective. And changing your nick names on this blog does not help you much because the person hiding behind those nick names remains the same.

The one who should be demoted is Sebastian Coltescu from second group who is 41 years. Găman in the begining was a great referee, but in the last season he didn't progress. Marcel Barsan had a great season last year and he should be in FIFA list. The other referees from Roumania are Ovidiu Hațegan, Istvan Kovacs, Radu Petrescu, Marius Avram, Sebastian Coltescu and Horatiu Fesnic. And Octavin Sovre who is 45 this year will stay two years more because he is in Hategan team.

Intrigued by the comments on the blog, I decided to watch first leg of China's FA Cup Final in full. Clattenburg was referee, with Irmatov's usual ARs running his lines, rest of the team including two VARs were local. One would imagine 'Clatts' replaced the Uzbek, or maybe even Kovalenko / Tantashev.

As always, a real pleasure to watch Mr Clattenburg officiate, still he shows to be a master of communication both with the players and to the audience- every referee in the world can learn sth from him.

He took three crucial decisions, which are all quite interesting IMO.

29' Penalty whistled for handball, supported by VAR
    https://youtu.be/JKyCUkIk13M?t=2032

47' Penalty for handball awarded after OFR by VAR (review is around one minute after the incident)
    https://youtu.be/JKyCUkIk13M?t=3450

61' Referee invited to rewatch handball incident, after OFR declines to award a penalty
    https://youtu.be/JKyCUkIk13M?t=4262

I hoped Fu Ming would officiate the return match, but it was Matthew Conger with his CWC team that got the call (Fu Ming was VAR). Not a good message for China's referees with these appointments- their best referee even handled AFC Champions League Final!
