  1. In my opinion, UEFA found a good line between appointing steady, 'safe pairs of hands' and also young, promising referees.

What stands out for me is that UEFA appoint Kovács on a high level again after VAL-YB (well done IMO), Makkelie with Antonov in Milan confirms he is seen as a real top referee and Frankowski in case of a good performance in quite an important match should expect to enter EL in the fifth / sixth round.

  2. Masias' match seems quite relevant for promotion, therefore a surprise to have a 3rd group referee there.
Good games for Kovacs and Guida as well, but not unexpected after their recent appointments.
And Makkelie is the first with two League A matches - both top clashes.

  3. With all due respect, Frankowski in Malta-Kosovo is disillusionment...
Only advantage that Malta is a picturesque island.

    1. Wouldn't say so. Malta is a difficult team to play and Kosovo is still in a tight race for top spot. Surely, not a big one, but not entirely irrelevant either.

    2. To be honest, I think Frankowski deserves much more at the moment. He was always good in UEFA competitions (UYL, etc.) but failed in some big tests for him (CL/EL quali). Perhaps that's why he didn't make a EL-debut so far.

However, from last season his form is excellent, no mistakes. In his current form he's better than all three Poles from first category! Therefore, I'm very negatively surprised he hasn't got a EL-debut this season (yet).

  4. Busy times for István Kovács.
Interceding his CL debut in Valencia, and NL assignment in Turkey, was the Derbiul României on Sunday evening, between Dinamo - Steaua in Bucharest.

Probably this will not be remembered as a classic derby, actually it was a relatively pleasant atmosphere on the pitch; in the tribunes, it really wasn't. First corner of the match took ninety seconds< to take because of projectiles being thrown by spectators.
Also players simulated quite a lot, but were still largely interested in playing football rather than fighting.
So QUITE challenging task for the referee here.

Referee had to evaluate three crucial situations, which can be found below (thanks to DigiSport).

    38' Penalty to Dinamo + YC (https://streamable.com/ai2mq)
    45' Penalty to Steaua (https://streamable.com/estwa)
51' Red Card, Violent Conduct (https://streamable.com/gb064)

Each decision gets better IMO, his decision at 45' is totally based on intuition with a zero angle, and really excellent RC call for my taste (what Velasco should have done in BRA-COL...).

His overall performance was largely sound. His line in cards was quite rigorous, what is definitely a good choice in this setting (match on calm with large potential to leave it), also his foul detection was good. He always had this match 'firmly in his grasp'.
Well done- but this is not why he (positively) stood out for me.

István Kovács is certainly a modern referee, but in my opinion he is also a bit of a 'throw-back'. His style is centred around a VERY natural authority, like was more common in yesteryear, not seen so much these days. He is certainly not a tyrant on the pitch, and he is not built like eg. Marciniak / Pitana, he 'just' has such a strong presence. After his authority, everything else just naturally follows- it is very pleasant to watch him referee (well), I must say.

As long as he can be on calm in UEFA competition (I don't think he was in Valencia, honestly), I can see the thirty-four years old's star rising very far.

  5. For me it`s interesting that Hategan referee observer, from Moscow, Stefan Messner, now he will supervised Istvan Kovacs, in Nations League. I don`t think so that both Haim Jakov and Stefan Messner are low ranking observers.

  6. Mallenco already with 1st booking in 5 minut.Spot on,dangerous tackle.

  7. From Serbia vs. Montenegro, at half-time, a spot-on YC, an incorrectly assessed VC and a questionable penalty call

    1. And a late challenge, where one can discuss about a VC-nature.

    2. 35' In my opinion, this should have been a red card actually. It's a punch, towards the head, and that's a violent conduct for me.

  8. Team Undiano once again underperforming. Wrong assessment of VC (35'), very soft pk (37'), very bad offside call cancelling a MNE goal by AR 1 (59').

    2. very bad performance from Mallenco as always... when others refeere' continuous make big mistake, UEFA can demote from elite list. but they dont touch mallenco. i think that situation about spain lobby..

  9. I don't know how the Spanish teams decides on added time, but it is not understandable.

  10. Thanks for the videos, DutchRef.
It had been a good start for Undiano in Belgrade with that absolutely mandatory and early YC. But then, after that, some problems started.
Situation in 35' has been wrongly assessed: it was a clear RC for VC.
This time I'm sure UEFA will agree: YC is definitely not enough, given the intent to hurt the opponent with a certain force. Of course VAR stuff but referee should be able to spot these situations.
Penalty to Serbia in 37' is a perception mistake. No contact at all I would say, but never, in any case, enough for a penalty.
Disallowed goal is the most crucial mistake as it went against the losing team, influencing the score, however it was not so easy for AR1. I'm sorry. No CL for Spanish crew on MD5 and 6, if you ask me.

    1. 75': strong arguments for a RC there as well. Player was aware that he couldn't reach the ball and his only aim was to stop opponent, one could draw the conclusion he deliberately kicked him with a certain force. Potentially, the fourth crucial mistake there.

  11. Looking at the clips, looks like a too soft (if not wrong) PK, a missed RC for VC and a wrongly disallowed goal by AR1.

  13. The decisive penalty in Turkey - Sweden by Kovács looks to be at least supportable decision. However, I didn't watch the game, it would be interesting to have some info about his performance.

PK Kovács in Turkey-Sweden, IMO correct.

  15. Makkelie's style of refereeing is outstanding. It's always nice to see him in action.

    1. Absolutely. Excellent first half, so far one could even give 8.5.
He gives the impression of having under control everything, every single detail. Cooperation with assistant referees and additional assistant referees.
Among other things: strong warnings when needed, clear gestures of PLAY ON, firmness, and also a good management of potentially difficult situations.
Some concepts are really difficult to explain by words, but I must say he is ousttanding there, Vlad is fully right.
Hopefully a similar second half will follow.

    2. Though his disciplinary line is very different from the one I saw in Lyon - Hoffenheim. Much more lenient (Cancelo's 'double foul' for example.)

      Delete
    3. Makkelie is a referee who is very well able to change his style. He can be a very strict referee when the match demands that, but he can also be very lenient when it is possible. That's a very good thing for a referee. Also, he has a very natural authority.

  16. Highlights of Poland U21 - Portugal U21 handled by Georgi Kabakov, if someone is interested.

Not the best performance this time - some clear fouls missed, problems with positioning and possible penalty not given (5:08, what are your thoughts?)

    1. Thank you so much for your reports. To add about the other play off, I have read a live text of the game by Treimanis (Greece - Austria). It seems as nothing extra-ordinary happened. Hopefully it was an expected level. Maybe some readers can confirm that.

    2. About the penalty appeal for handball, very tricky case. Ball was for sure expected, but I wouldn't be so harsh in assessing it as deliberate handball. Player should have put his arm behind, I think the contact with ball happens when arm is in a quite natural position. Referee could be supported, penalty wouldn't be a mistake, but here I'm really torn.

    3. I will make highlights of Treimanis as I watched his game. Yes, I would say expected level but in a demanding game. Large number of fouls, some tensions, etc.

  17. Bezbodorov with some crucial decisions apparently. YC for a foul immediately followed by a RC for Albania's Mavraj after VC, also a pk for handball (player was booked already, stayed on).

  18. OT
Serhiy Bekker has been removed as AR1 in Greece - Estonia.
    New appointment:
    https://www.uefa.com/uefanationsleague/season=2019/matches/round=2000959/match=2024096/match-info/index.html?iv=true
Christos Akrivos (GRE) will work as fourth official.
I got some info and it was reported that Bekker had a serious health problem. Let's hope he will recover soon.

  19. YC to Chiesa another example of good cooperation with AR2.
But RC was possible as well there... to be rewatched.

    1. Excellent decision with the straight RC surely spotted by a team-member.
About the penalty, unluckily, for what I can say, the quality of the video and the only replays shown are not enough to understand whether the handball in the wall was punishable, one must trust Bezborodov.

      Delete
    2. I saw a sufficient replay. No way this is a penalty imo. Arm not raised high enough and in a "protective" or natural position. Also about the RC, while studs were raised and player does go over the ball, I do have doubts about how much contact was made with opposition player. He could have easily stuck to his original decision but either color card is supportable I guess.

      Delete
    3. @Bgymn RC is for a violent conduct, you can watch it in the last seconds of the video.

      Delete
    4. Thank you for the correction! I did not spot it at first when I viewed it from a different link but this link clarified things. Yes RC is the correct call in this situation.

  21. Interesting first half for Bezborodov in Albania v Scotland. Tackle from the Albanian captain hits the ball with his studs and goes into the opponent, gets a YC.

But he then decides to headbutt another player, looks like the referee gets advice and upgrades it to a RC.

    https://youtu.be/6ZE-4O91BPA?t=35

Then just before half-time Scotland get a free-kick just outside the box, hits the wall who are inside the box and referee awards a penalty for handball. Hard to tell from the two angles how correct it was, as it didn't look like the arms were raised.
