    1. Good point.
I also considered Turpin for a match there...

  3. In spite of the seminar Dankert has a match in Germany today (while Stegemann and Zwayer are missing from the appointments).
Also Stegemann was at the U19 qualifiers in England earlier this week.
So apparently they don't have to be in Qatar all the time...

  15. Gräfe would indeed be the safest choice, despite him having the first leg (which he managed excellently). However, the "info" has been spread by “IG Schiedsrichter” based on speculations posted on the German Bundesliga blog) and one should not always trust what they spread. I think the German readers on here know that “IG Schiedsrichter” is everything, but not a reliable source for such infos.

  20. Any info about Kuipers? Some crucial calles in Dutch top clash Ajax - PSV. Red card and penalty, the latter decisive for the final score. I hope that Kuipers got everything right without VAR :)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Well, both RC and penalty were VAR-calls, which were supportable if not fully correct. I felt like he didn't have full control and players didn't seem to accept his calls. I expected a better performance from him. In his defence, it was a very hard and heated game to officiate.

      Delete
    2. It wasn't a good Kuipers game if I'm honest. Two crucial decisions that had to be corrected by the VAR. In the interview afterwards, Kuipers said that with the red card he first thought of rash play but at the VAR check he saw that it was excessive force. Kuipers thought Neres was too easy going down for a penalty, but after the VAR check he saw that Neres was indeed hit by Schwaab. In short, two good VAR interventions.

      Delete
    3. You are always ready to intervene, Sheriff, when there is to discuss about possible mistakes. I'm still waiting the day in which you will praise a referee. No need to exasperate tones, Kuipers is a top referee but he can make sometimes mistakes, like other colleagues. If you use just a match to judge him, you are definitely wrong. Never a word from you when he showed masterpiece games.
Having said that, I must agree that RC in 55' is a mandatory one and Kuipers should have shown it by himself. You should also underline that he accepted to change decision, that's for sure remarkable. He admitted his wrong assessment.

    1. The romanian former referee Cristian Balaj told about Hategan mistakes from the yesterday games are because he is tired. He had 4 games in 10 days, to much for a ref for me. Hațegan was in Belgium, then in Saudi Arabia, next game was Czech -Brasil, and finally FCSB -CSU Craiova. But if our romanian referee comitte was inspired, they should switch Hategan with Fesnic, who was at Astra -FCSB. I presumed that Kovacs will handle CFR -FCSB, in the 5 stage of the Championship finals, or maybe we have some surprise.

      Delete
    2. I'm not interested anymore about opinions of Crăciunescu. He is preety old and he is not updated with the current guidelines in refereeing. Also, he is a very biased commentator.

Regarding FCSB- Craiova I can say there were some difficult situations. probably the only (clear) mistake is the offside from 55'. I'm preety sure that referees thought the forward touched twice the ball (that was also my 1st impression but it seems he didn't). The situations that involved only Hategan (and not his ARs) are grey area.

This is Romania. Big scandal for everything. I remember 1st goal of Atletico against Juventus (2-0 in Madrid) with Bonucci down of the pitch after a hand in his head. Zwayer didn't whistle foul, VAR didn't intervene. Not every contact is foul, you can fall on the pitch after every contact. But in Romania players are used to do that because the referees whistle foul very easy...

      Delete
    3. Thanks for the update ichigo, I agree with Mr Balaj, it was too much for Hațegan to have all these games in the last days. He should take a rest before EL QFs.

I watched the Al-Hilal Riyadh - Ohod Medina game handled by the Romanian last Saturday, and I can report a solid performance in an unremarkable game for the most part. In additional time though, there was much chaos with two disallowed goals for the home team (who were top, playing bottom, approaching big derby in the next round) and many conflicts for the referee team to solve. Second disallowed goal was correct without doubt, but the first one is very interesting, à la Brych in Real Madrid - Ajax and Uğurlu in Hatayspor - Galatasaray.

      https://streamable.com/5muhe

I saw that a few weeks ago, Hațegan took charge of a VERY crucial game regarding qualification for the championship playoff, between Viitorul Constanța - Botoșani. Ten YCs were sorted out, if you can remember back that far, it would be interesting to hear about his performance.

As you mention him, let me say I am very excited about what István Kovács can reach in the future. I don't know if you saw my highlights from the Zamalek - Al Ahly game (https://ok.ru/video/1088156011043), but he showed a very convincing performance there. He should be Elite referee before too long I am quite certain.

      Delete
    4. Thanks for the news Mikael. But like Hategan, also Kovacs struggled in the romanian championship. He had three games and only one was satisfied, and that was Astra -Viitorul, and he maked mistakes in Gaz Metan Mediaș Sepsi and Craiiova -Astra, where he didn't whistle a penalty for handball. Also, I didn't like Craciunescu because he didn't like referees like Hategan and Kovacs. His favourite ref was Alexandru Tudor. By the way which observer is important between Hamer and Bleckere? Both was with Kovacs this year.

    1. No, he is definitely out after many different judgments, the last one went against him. Today he has released a very long and detailed interview about his experience and all what happened. It is very interesting. Among other things, he also stated that Rizzoli tried to convince AIA to keep him as serie A referee, but this request was denied. His story remains as a very particular one, now the association has been forced to change something about its functioning. He asked, first of all, for major clarity about the future for every referee, especially the ones at top level, who, after having been dismissed, find themselves in a relatively still young age (40 - 45) in a difficult situation, without any work and without assurance for the future.

  31. I watched Dennis Higler officiate the FC Barcelona - Olympique Lyonnais match in the UEFA Youth League Quarterfinal. Home team won thanks to a penalty awarded in additional time of 2H, which was part of a quite challenging game for the Dutch refereeing team. Players were largely focused on football especially before the closing stages - of the nine cautions sorted out, six came after 80' - but especially Barcelona didn't act always coherently with fair play. This game was a good test for Higler, who largely did well, but the VERY crucial decision at +95' was wrong IMO.

Dennis Higler computed decisions very well during the game, really good foul detection with many duels to assess including nice advantages. One could have the feeling he wasn't interested in 'appeasing' one team with any decisions by balancing, he just decided from what he saw; he could have made the game slightly easier to handle by whistling where he was expected to, but he was almost always right when not doing so. One can appreciate this attitude. Regarding card selection, I was impressed that at 2' he was willing to caution for a clear reckless tackle, many match-managers would have just issued a strong verbal warning. All nine cards shown were correct. He missed only one (dark) YC at +95', where he played advantage and seconds later gave the decisive penalty.

Higler is a typical 'policeman' referee in the way that he deals with players. He is very firm and short with them, his gestures don't offer them any surplus respect, without being rude though. He is no real co-operative referee, who is not interested in working with the players, and stands as a distant authority. Hence, his formula for success is having a clear line in decisions that the players can understand and predict while not attempting to balance. In other words, he can succeed by always taking very good decisions. He can also predict player-player conflicts well, and knows when to step in. I would recommend for him to watch some full match records of matches that Wolfgang Stark handled in order to develop further (eg. Ludogorets - Basel).

Assistant referees performed well, especially Johan Balder AR1, who was very busy including a very good onside for the 1-1 at 61', only making one mistake at 34'. His mark should be 8,5 area.

But finally, that penalty. I fully understand his logic, Barcelona attacker had marginally won the position and then there was a hand in his back, but the contact is so negligible. For me, never enough to whistle a penalty. The best clip I could find is here:

  32. Crazy finale for Munuera Montero (Second Group since January 2019) in Athletic-Levante.

First of all, a decisive and very, very controversial PK whistled for a reckless stamp just less than a second after "clearing" the ball, and then a 2nd YC to a Levante defender for kicking the ball onto him.

    1. Excuse me, but you are not fair Quilava. Maybe you are interested in pushing up some referees in spain. Probably you are one of them. But your credibility is going down:

First of all the penalty was very clear. Foot on foot. No doubt. Well done Munuera Montero. Also the management with players very frustrated.

On the other hand, last night the second yellow card in Villarreal - Barcelona was 100% clear. Even The medias from Madrid
recognized it. Was a quite dificult match for Hernandez Hernandez with a very good performance.

But you are allways trying to underestimate some referees and overvalue another referees. I tell you with respect

      Delete
    2. Hola, Álvaro. I ask you to read this post carefully and answer if you want.

      1. I'm a referee IRL, but not professional so far.

      2. My post about Munuera Montero has almost zero opinion. "Controversial" PK doesn't need to mean "wrong PK", if I had thought that Munuera had messed it up with that PK, I'd have said "Controversial (and IMO, wrong) PK". I say it's controversial because of the strong reaction from Levante fans and even his president with lots of severe accusations against Munuera Montero, the CTA, the VAR, Federation et al.

      3. If I write some OT posts about LaLiga (and not necesarilly only from LaLiga!) it's with the aim of opening a discussion about the controversy, I'm not here just to publicly criticize other referees just because I don't like them.

      4. Which referees do you consider I want to "push" and which referees do you consider I dislike so much that I systematically underestimate? If you read my comments regularly I can admit that maybe I've been quite harsh on Undiano this season (because I really think that he is performing under expectations on his very last season, but it's nothing personal, in fact I think that during some years he was the best Spanish referee, maybe since the late 00s until 2014-2015), but apart from that...

      5. Regarding Hernández Hernández, the same as in my 2nd point. When I say he's issuing lots of cards it's a fact, not an opinion. Just a comment to point out what was Hernández Hernández having to deal with. I don't always give my opinion, specially if at that moment I'm not sure about it. The 2nd YC on Álvaro was also quite contested among Villarreal players and supporters (you should know, as a Spaniard, that Suárez has a "diver" reputation) and decisive for the outcome of the match, but I think it was a correct decision from Hernández Hernández.

      6. Finally, I don't understand what do you exactly mean when you say that my credibility "is going down". Quilava is barely a football refereeing passionated guy posting (always trying to be respectful) comments and opinions on a blog. I'm not that important! XD

  33. Controversial decision in today's DFB Cup quarterfinal match between Bayern München and 1. FC Heidenheim, refereed by Guido Winkmann.
    => https://streamable.com/a6q9r

My question: is the original YC-SPA-decision here really a clear and obvious mistake here for VAR to intervene? Kimmich had definitely enough time to intervene there in that situation. Recommending an OFR in that situation is for me even wrong here, YC for SPA was definitely the correct decision for me. Given the fact that Kimmich still can intervene, I feel that this is not a clear DOGSO...

    1. I agree. Not a clear and obvious mistake a YC.

    2. I would even say the red card would be a clear and obvious error. Therefore I think if Winkman had given a RC first a OFR would have bern correct. However, YC is never clearly and obviously wrong. Luckily, Bayern won 5-4 (!) and fans are rather speaking about the game itself and given that Munich still won there‘s not that much discussion

  34. Good performance by Radu Marian Petrescu in the easy-going Chelsea - GNK Dinamo UEFA Youth League Quarterfinal game (NB: I didn't watch the penalty competition). Only one controversial incident, very tight penalty-freekick decision at 76', Romanian decided for the latter, replays proved inconclusive (often the case in YL games). Petrescu is a referee who presents himself as a'top-down authority', on TTT Niclas Erdmann analogised him to Milorad Mažić which is a sound comparison. On a personal level, I am chuffed that he recovered from his serious operation in a good way. Definitely he can reach 1st Cat. from my view, impossible to say about more just from this (normal) match.

    1. About the last incident, for sure I don't understand Marciniak when it is about cooperation with assistant referees.
He accepted the help in Portugal - Serbia but AR was very far away from the incident, and then now in this match he refused to whistle with AR so close?
Sometimes he wants to make difficult what seems to be easy, at least on paper.

    2. Not so good to see how someone ignores his ARs but i think Marciniak saw that there wasnt any foul and he was right in my opinion..

      Delete
    3. As Chefren said above, his AR is very close to the play and clearly sees the push in the back and yet Marciniak chose to waive him down. What confidence does he instill in his AR's to make any other calls? Poor message sent and terrible teamwork.

  37. First ever games with VAR in Russia (except for WC). Both semifinals of the Russian cup produced OFR situations

    1. Alexey Eskov changed his mind and issued a RC after OFR in Ural-Arsenal
    https://youtu.be/39iudZNaGas

    2. Kirill Levnikov pointed to the penalty spot after OFR in Lokomotiv-Rostov
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=59KWF76wp-g&feature=youtu.be&t=300

In both cases, it took 4-5 minutes before the final decision was made. Russian referees obviously need more practice with VAR.

I like how he tries to isolate players, but in the second scene, he had his back to the field... not so good. Also, the VC should have been spotted immediately, he won't get a much better view. That said, both RCs correct for me.

About Eskov, interesting to notice that in the first situation (violent conduct), referee was very close to players with a potentially excellent view, but for some reasons he was looking elsewhere (at the ball). He totally missed what happened despite of having that positioning (YC issued by intuition?).
      See: https://i.postimg.cc/59ZZ6PzH/9.jpg
RC for SFP later in the game is OK and very well spotted.

Levnikov: clearly reckless challenge there, Russian referees will surely improve regarding VAR quickness soon.

  38. I watched Nikola Dabanović handle the TSG Hoffenheim - Real Madrid game in the quarterfinal of the UEFA Youth League. Firstly one must say, what a match! Thrilling until the end, when Hoffenheim scored for 4-2 completing a surprising victory in front of a sold-out crowd (6 000ish); this was no typical Youth League game. Conditions were very trying to play football in, sheeting rain poured down for hours before kick off and continuing throughout, at times led to farcical scenes. Okay, it was not quite that game in Kazakhstan (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6G-75ljWk3A), but as we learnt many times before in UEFA, the show must go on.

The entire context led to a challenging game for the Montenegrin trio led by Nikola Dabanović, flanked by his revolving door of assistants - just this season in UEFA competition I counted ten (!!!) - Vladan Todorović and Srđan Jovanović took the flag in this game as non-FIFA ARs. A man certainly in our vision after a very accomplished performance in the Armenia - Finland game, and also in UEFA's for some time now. While this was an easy game to slip up in, pardon the pun, players who fought hard against each other, these young men clearly learnt all the 'tricks' quite quickly, combined with the treacherous pitch conditions meant that this game needed a strong leader to 'guide' the players through the match. Dabanović fulfilled this role very well.
He won't be in 2nd Cat. for much longer.

One can mistake his firm and unflappable aesthetic for passivity, but I saw a referee who showed convincing mental strength to always have the overview. Mistakes in foul detection could easily have led to the referee 'losing' this game, but they were rare. I would ask though whether some of his delayed whistles were really beneficial, in circumstances where technical football was very limited and the foul was clear, it was probably better just to blow the foul quickly. He allowed much, my feeling at first was too much, but his attitude payed off thanks to keeping the overview, and knowing when it was necessary to step in.

Referee opened the cards at 11' when Vladan Todorović AR1 communicated that he saw a reckless strike, my feeling is it was rather nothing, but a well executed dive rather 'forced that decision'. Next caution could have been a RC for violent conduct, but I would back the decision to assess it as an UB. All of the next cautions were fully expected, but I want to praise Dabanović for his caution at 63' for showing lack of respect for the game, no promising attack but excessive shirt pull. I would have liked to see a caution for dissent to the adjacent complaining player during the card procedure at 87', but no bigger mistake. Well done.

Many interesting situations for both assistants, very often no replays to decide whether they were right or wrong, particularly in a very surreal moment at 72' where everyone stopped but Vladan Todorović kept his flag down, my feeling is that he was wrong, but I can't be sure.

Dabanović is no typical match-manager. He keeps a certain distance from the players, and has a very natural authority, always keeping calm. Furthermore, he stepped in when the game required it, preventing conflicts and managing dissents. He can make his point succinctly, without the need for bigger talks. I don't think this means that necessarily he has lacks in personality, I would argue the contrary, à la del Cerro Grande.

Another good performance by Nikola Dabanović. I would speculate as Rosetti clearly likes his way of refereeing looking at others he pushed so far, there can be a very big future for the Montenegrin at a high level. I watch not only for his progress, he should easily make 1st Cat. for next season, but crucially whether he can form a secure trio, the lack of which for now may well hold him back.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Thank you, after watching him in a few international games and most recently Armenia - Finland, I share your opinion on Dabanović and am glad to hear he had another good game. You summed up his personality and way of refereeing quite well. He's not the most talkative referee, but a calm one who still keeps control and has not only a good foul detection, but also a very good card selection. I too believe that he should get a promotion and some more challenging games in the future, which could be very bright for him!

    1. With the help of replays, it is a clear penalty (although it looked like a dive in the first one...)

The OFR seems unneccesary here - never a clear mistake and obviously the referee had seen what happened.

    2. Disagree Philipp. IMO, large theatrical way of falling by attacker who anticipated the contact and exaggerated too much his action BEFORE to be fouled. So play on supportable here.

      Delete
    3. Straight leg, studs first, into the knee/upper calf. And Marciniak in his vast wisdom wanted this to be reviewed to ultimately under-punish and only issue a Yellow? Marciniak is currently more of a lost cause than I thought. Poor judgement on the pitch and behind the VAR screen.

      Delete
    4. Theatrical fall or not. The Southampton defender Yoshida actually raises his leg once the Liverpool player touches it past him. If Yoshida's leg stays on the ground then yes, no PK. But he does raise it causing the contact.

In a league with VAR, I can confidently say that a PK would be called.

  43. Wow, minute 28 of Barcelona-Atlético and Gil Manzano just issued a straight RC to Costa, who was making clear verbal dissent. Gil Manzano was about to open the left shirt pocket (where he keeps the YC + notepad) and at the end I don't know what Costa said but he switched to the right pocket to issue a straight RC. I guess Costa insulted him, let's wait for the match report. Also 2 YC for Atlético players for the following massive surrounding to dissent.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Well, I guess I can read Gil Manzano's lips when repeating to Atlético players what Costa said to him and seems to have been a thing close to "la puta madre que te parió". In that case, very deserved RC.

It's not acceptable at all to talk to the referee about "the f***ing mother that gave you birth"...

Sorry for my poor level of English, but I don't know any pejorative expression for giving birth (that's "parió" means, a very offensive form for the equivalent of giving birth)

    2. I'm in total agreement with you Victor. But as we both know, football is not fair. We've seen players legs broken because of horrific and violent tackles. And those guilty players are only banned for a handful of matches while the player with the broken leg is out for months if not years.

15 names have been confirmed, while the only one missing in the final selection is Fabbri (ITA). I don't know whether he had been called for the seminary just as guest or it was a technical decision to remove him after the previous selection.
