  1. So there was a reason for Fandel's observation in Salzburg - Napoli.
Del Cerro Grande was planned for another game in Champions League.
Of course this is also for the limited number of options about referees to be appointed with VAR. I think it never happened at least in recent times to see a referee promoted in Elite getting immediately two games in CL KO stage. At the same time we could say that the work in Schalke - City was overall appreciated (including the handall?).
Last question is about Gil Manzano. He has still time but at moment it seems as del Cerro is clearly ahead by far in terms of trust by committee. Let's remember that on paper one could have expected from Gil Manzano what del Cerro Grande achieved in this KO stage.

    1. If i remember well, Michael Oliver had 2 games too in KO Stage last year after his promotion.

    2. Yes you are right, I was wrong. Besiktas - Bayern and then the famous Real - Juventus.

    3. A round of 16 and quater final tie between real Madrid and juventus

      Delete
    4. But is only the 4th CL match overall for del Cerro Grande and his first CL season - this really has not happened in recent times, I think.

Gil Manzano belongs the future, NED-GER and the U20 WC show, that he ist still considered for something big. He just needs to wait a bit (at most until Mateu and dCG retire...).

    5. Yes right, Philipp. This was what I wanted to say, in terms of experience it is surely the first time that a new Elite referee gets so much without having handled any single CL GS game on previous seasons. This shouldn't have happened in "normal conditions", I would say.

    1. There are 2 possible decisions:
      1) He is already appointed for UCL final or
      2) "It will be his season again" - sarcasm:(

  4. I expect 2 German appointment in the second leg as no German team qualified

    1. Zwayer? No appointments for him after Atletico - Juventus. It is unlikely in my opinion and I'm also in doubt whether we will see him in EL Quarterfinals or not (but I think so...).

      Delete
    2. I think that Zwayer is more likely than Aytekin on EL QF.

      Delete
    3. I really don't know what commitee think about Zwayer and Marciniak. I would not appoint them in CL this season but we'll see.

  5. I am seeing Orsato's name as FO and it seems strange to me. He could easily have an CL-EL QF but instead he is only FO.

Sidiropoulos, on the other hand, could not expect a better appointment after his last performances.

    1. One must be honest, Sidiropoulos appointment is not deserved. I would have liked to read any other Elite referee's name.
But this is a very good signal for the Greek for next season, appointing him and making experience with VAR should mean that he is not considered for a demotion and he will officiate in CL on next group stage.

      Delete
    2. If we must be honest, Sidiropoulos can't escape demotion. His last performances, both domestically and internationally, are way below par.

And IIRC the last Elite referee who was demoted is Moen. His performances were worst than Sidiropoulos? IMO, no.

      Delete
    3. Orsato is still possible for a QF next week, I think.

      Delete
    4. Tasos Sidiropoulos has been the best Greek referee in the last 5-6 years and he has been representing our country-Greece-very well in European competitions. He had excellent performances in 2018, as for example the ones on England-Croatia 2-1 or Roma-CSSKA 3-0 , and one or two not very successful recently. I can consider only one incident as a clear mistake, his non-call penalty in Naples. I am very glad that the committee supports him and shows confidence in his abilities. He is one of the candidates to ref matches in Euro 2020 and he will be given more chances to convince the committee in the next round of European qualifiers. Personally I do not think he has been one of the worst Elite this year. I could easily name at least 5 with much worse performances that had impact on results as well. He deserves to remain in Elite category but I do not think he is ready to handle big pressure matches. He missed an opportunity to ref a EL SEMI FINAL this year but I think he will come back next year. He needs to become more assertive with players.

    5. "the best Greek referee in the last 5-6 years"
But not good enough or trusted enough to handle the major derbies or top clashes. Matches for which the Greek FA are forced to bring in foreign referee's. And he has has a pretty lackluster year littered with mistakes and controversies in European competitions.

We could then see Makkelie in Porto - Liverpool, Orsato in City - Tottenham and Brych in Barcelona - Manchester United.

    1. You can keep him for semifinals. Better to have some "clean" names in case of need.

    2. I think that it is no coincidence to see four referees from countries which are still involved in the competition in the first-leg games. For the return matches I do not expect an Italian for the all English derby since the winner could face Juventus in the semifinals.

  8. OT from Colombia
it seems as Roldan made a VAR gesture to change a decision in a game in which VAR was not active (no VAR in Colombian football...)

    1. Thank you, RayChore!

Slovenian and Ukrainian are the most talented ones. I would expect one of them with the final appointment.

Positively surprised with Krzysztof Jakubik! He had some problems (like many others) with his first Yo-Yo test when he joined the FIFA list but was allowed to handle games anyway. He is not players friend but not very strict with regard to disciplinary management. He needs a good mentor and can reach at least Second Category. And such a tournament is always a very good opportunity to get a professional feedback from significant observers.

Good luck to all selected officials!

    1. To me that's a PK. The blue player undercuts his opponent and makes contact prior to red/yel player heading the ball. As you said, in the midfield, the referee would for sure whistle for a foul. A foul is a foul.

  13. *News from Arabian Peninsula*

    Friday 12.04.2019.

    Saudi Proffesional League
    Al Ahli SC vs AL-Hilal

    Biggest derby in Saudi Arabia

    Refferee: Szymon Marciniak
    AR1: Milovan Ristic
    AR2: Dalibor Djurdjevic

That could be good chance for Szymon to come back in top form.
With Serbian duo he has good chanches for that.
Saudi Arabia's referee commitet have great confidence in the Serbs without Mazic. They trust them.
Good signal and big respect for Ristic and Djurdjevic.

    2. And thus the problem with being lenient to the first tackle. You back yourself into a corner and are forced to be just as lenient on the revenge tackle.

    3. Rocchi is well know for issuing cards. It's hard to see neither got booked. So... please be patient. :))

      Delete
    4. Sad to hear that. I had thought Rocchi would be one of the few who does not hesitate to use his cards in such scenes, no matter how early. But maybe he knows how his fellow Italian fared in United - Barcelona with this style?

      Delete
    5. At least both teams were lucky without a YC once and he should have no problems giving a YC for the next harder foul

      Delete
    6. In recent memory only two names stand out as being referee's who are not afraid to show early deserved cards. Brych and Turpin

  18. Luckily there’s VAR! Very bad call by AR2 in Manchester!

  19. Correct VAR intervention in Manchester.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Ajax #3 (Veltman) lucky to escape a YC for a late stamp.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Anybody watching Juve / Ajax and del Cerro Grande? Or is everybody watching Man U / Barca?

    ReplyDelete
  22. Now mandatory YC for Busquets. Fully deservedd

    ReplyDelete
  23. Rocchi is quite balanced. Two oral warnings and two yellow cards...

    ReplyDelete
  24. Would anybody like to speculate as to who Rochi's AR2 saw in a offside position in order for him to raise his flag?

    ReplyDelete
  25. Uhm... penalty appeal by UTD. Contact is very very soft and attacker falls as he was shot in the head! By the way, there was a clear foul on Messi, not whistled by Rocchi few seconds before that would have cancelled the penalty anyway

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It was a dive and Rocchi missed YC for that.

      Delete
    2. He accentuated the contact but a contact, even if soft, was there. Never a penalty for sure but IMO did not deserve YC

      Delete
  26. Smalling challenge on Messi draws blood from Messi's nose. Completely unintentional back hand to Messi's face after having won the ball.

    ReplyDelete
  27. del Cerro Grande tries to let the game flow so far, but there are quite a lot of fouls. Would have been better IMHO to punish some stamps (Veltman, now Bonucci).

    ReplyDelete
  28. Cerro Grande is doing well so far, but I wonder how long he can keep his cards in the pocket. Number of fouls is growing.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Balanced approach from Rocchi? Come on! For me, very bad performance from him and his team (AR2). He had to give 2 YCs in first 5 minutes, they were mandatory. Then he missed YC for Smalling, and missed YC for diving in Barcelona PK area. Lot of mistakes from him. About offside I have no words, not even close.

    ReplyDelete
  30. First YC for Tagliafico (Ajax). But unlucky scene: He gave an advantage for Ajax and when he was about to whistle, Tagliafico made a late tackle. So he gave a free kick for Ajax but a YC for the challenge.

    ReplyDelete
  31. First YC,to a player who will miss tge next match. Cerro delayed his whistle after a foul from Juve, after which a player of Ajax made a foul too. He got a YC for it. Lot's of protest and I think he should have a avoided this YC.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Interesting. Ordinary foul commited by Juventus defender, but del Cerro decides to hold the whistle to see if there can be an advantage, but it results in an immediate reckless challenge commited by Ajax left back Tagliafico. So it's a free kick for Ajax, but YC for Tagliafico (who misses next match). Because of a delayed whitsle.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Late whistle for foul in favor of Ajax lead to late challenge from Ajax player and he got YC for his tackle. Del Cero has big responsibility for that YC because he waited too long to whistle the foul.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Well... main responsibilities are on the player that made the foul. YC was deserved :)

      Delete
    2. Del Cerro was just unlucky for holding the whistle for a second because he had to make lots of explanations to both teams.

      Delete
  34. Overall an okay performance in the first half by Gianluca Rocchi at Old Trafford. Rocchi tried to manage the challenges of Busquets and Young (he was quite aware I guess that he had to stay with a verbal warning on Young’s foul). IMO, Busquets’ challenge was really reckless and should have resulted in a YC. It could even have avoided the foul that occurred only moments later, it would have put a signal into the game. I agree on both YC given during the match.
On the penalty: contact is there, but too soft to whistle a penalty. Rocchi assessed the situation by himself, another argument for no OFR.
And thank God that there is VAR, disallowing the 0-1 was quite a blatant mistake by AR2, well done by Irrati who solved the incident quite fastly.

Rocchi must now be very alert in the second half, I feel that this game could easily “explode”.

    ReplyDelete

  35. Del Cerro no penalty decision ok VAR confirmed

    ReplyDelete
  36. Vidal getting booked for simply looking like he committed a foul? Because, where's the contact?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. And now a YC for Lingard which is wrong as well. Unfortunately, Rocchi with good performance for me

      Delete
    2. Absolutely no clear line nor any consistency from Rocchi. But this is the Rocchi we all know. Easily duped and impressed.

      Delete
  37. Og geez Rocchi! You kept them in the pocket early for two fouls that were clearly deserving. But now your last two cautions were for supposed fouls where there was no contact.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I'm sorry, but Rocchi is too easily influenced by players reaction to contact. The last 2 of the last 3 booking have been for no contact at all and the third for hand/arm on the shoulder where Suarez duped him into believing contact on the head.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I think the right expression to sum up Rocchi’s performance tonight is this: mixed bag. Some positive aspects (several correctly rejected penalty appeals, some good advantages) but quite some negative one’s as well (disciplinary action: fussy card selection). Game was 100% under control and no one will talk about the referee in that match.

I’m actually surprised that no one has mentioned the missed handball by Busquets in 48’. IMO this could be considered as deliberate handball and Busquets was already on a caution, it could have been a 2YC there.

Will this match affect Rocchi’s chances to officiate EL Final? TBH, I don’t think so: as I said earlier on, no one will talk about the referee after that match, the only one who still could get in Rocchi’s way to get the match in Baku will be Napoli.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Well we had similar situation in his Serie a match where he gave RC to Pjanic for SPA because of handball.
I doubt that he would gave RC to Busquets if he spotted that tonight.

      Delete
    2. Busquets handling was a teamwork failure. Rocchi was not it the best position to correctly judge it. But AR2 had a direct sight line to it and failed to assist Rocchi. Overall that AR (AR2) had a a forgettable night. Him flagging for offside on Barca's goal is still unbelievable to me.

      Delete
  40. A little bit OT, but the SPA foul that led to the last YC awarded by Del Cerro was high IQ.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I dont like his style but that decision was world class.

    2. I think Quilava refers to the football IQ of the Ajax offender (Ekkelenburg), who in the dying seconds was holding Cristiano Ronaldo off-ball to keep him out of the Juventus attack ;)

      Delete
    3. That's it, DutchRef :)

Obviously advantage + mandatory YC after ball is out of play was a good decision by Del Cerro, but not as impressive of the one from Ajax player.

      Delete
    4. Indeed, that was a very clever foul by such a young player. I wonder what del Cerro Grande would have done if the ball hadn't gone out. Finish the game and book him then?

    6. Howard Maxi,
I highly doubt any booking would have come after the whistle. We've seen it many time before. A referee chooses to blow for the end of the half or the game and overlooks the incident.

  41. Well, I think Del Cerro Grande can be quite satisfied with his performance tonight. Also, in front of Batta btw.

    1. I agree. Another (very) good performance by Carlos. And one has to mention that fitness preparation of Spanish referees is something extraordinary. Always in move, many sprints and no visible fatigue in the dying stages. Brilliant!

    2. Head to head. Del Cerro Grande with the better performance out of the two tonight.

      Delete
    3. I also have noticed that the fitness shown by Del Cerro grande and in the previous day by Mateu Lahoz was absolutely superb. Other referee bodies should be trying to poach the Spanish referees fitness coach ;)

    4. That person could work wonders in the EPL :D

    5. Yes. In general, every single Spanish elite referee has the physical condition of an elite athlete.

As we were told once in a refereeing course, "here, referees used to be referees in an acceptable physical condition, now they are athletes that sometimes take a whistle".
