Very good game for Undiano Mallenco, maybe the last one before retirement but he has still a small chance to get a semifinal. For sure there will be only one Spanish team after this round, however my impression, given the sonorous match, is that this is very likely his last appearance.
ReplyDeleteThen we have Oliver in a Spanish derby and Taylor with another appointment: the latter has shown very good performances in this KO stage. Committee seems to be very satisfied.
Zwayer: in my opinion he has the least sonorous game of this round,. in my opinion it is quite clear that committee was not so much satisfied with his performance in CL, however I would say at the same time not that bad.
I also have the feeling it's Alberto's last UEFA game. A very good appointment for him. Good luck to all!
DeleteChefren both English men have been very good this knockout stages
DeleteHow you said the latter with regards to Taylor makes it seem Oliver underperformed
DeleteWell, I must be honest, maybe I wrote that because I didn't expect that from Taylor. While, about Oliver, it has been "normal" for him. Clear? :)
DeleteI understand
DeleteI to did not expect that from taylor
DeleteI to did not expect that from taylor
DeleteAgain, as yesterday in CL, four referees from countries which are still involved in the competition in the first-leg games.
ReplyDeleteSo, for Second leg can we expect names like Hategan, Collum, Marciniak, Gil Manzano, maybe Skomina (before CL final)?
DeleteOrsato and Rocchi for this year final! the probability of it is about 100%, especially with Rosetti's nepotism:(
DeleteRosetti nepotism? what do you mean? Rocchi had a very good career but he never whistled a final (and the chairman was Collina). These is the right year for him.
DeleteSkomina 100% Final CL this year👌
DeleteThe fact that for the first legs of UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League quarter-finals referee teams from top four European football nations and one referee team from country that was always very strong in refereeing politics have been appointed by UEFA is quite bitter and discouraging for many national FAs. Do top UEFA club competitions become more and more closed?
ReplyDeleteOr UEFA wanted to appoint referees from big leagues where the referees have more experience and are tested every week on matches with big pressure for more safety.
DeleteUndiano and Taylor have teams, which they already had in R16. Not a big problem, but maybe it could have been avoided.
ReplyDeleteR32 not 16.
DeleteYes, thanks.
DeletePaul Tierney is not included in Oliver's team... I do wonder why?
ReplyDeleteMichael Oliver's AARs this season:
Delete08/09/2018, UNL | SUI-ISL | Pawson, Atkinson
03/10/2018, UCL | Porto - Galatasaray | Tierney, Marriner
24/10/2018, UCL | Club Brugge - Monaco | Tierney, Marriner
27/11/2018, UCL | AEK - Ajax | Tierney, Marriner
21/02/2019, UEL | Zenit - Fenerbahçe | Kavanagh, Marriner
07/03/2019, UEL | Dinamo Zagreb - Benfica | Kavanagh, Marriner
We can see that Tierney-Marriner duo was used only in UEFA Champions League while Kavanagh-Marriner due in UEFA Europa League. Pawson was appointed with Oliver only once, in UEFA Nations League, seven months ago...
To compare, those are Anthony Taylor's AARs this season:
Delete29/08/2018, UCL | PSV - BATE | Tierney, Atkinson
06/09/2018, UNL | CZE-UKR | Tierney, Marriner
03/10/2018, UCL | Lokomotiv Moskva - Schalke | Attwell, Atkinson
24/10/2018, UCL | Dortmund - Atlético | Attwell, Atkinson
16/11/2018, UNL | NED-FRA | Attwell, Atkinson
12/12/2018, UCL | Plzeň - Roma | Attwell, Atkinson
14/02/2019, UEL | Shakhtar Donetsk - Frankfurt | Attwell, Atkinson
20/02/2019, UEL | Sevilla - Lazio | Attwell, Atkinson
14/03/2019, UEL | Krasnodar - Valencia | Attwell, Atkinson
Starting from UEFA Champions League group stage, Anthony was appointed with the same Attwell-Atkinson duo.
This overview also highlights, that Taylor got significantly more UEFA appointments this season including more sonorous pairings (DOR-ATL, NED-FRA, SEV-LAZ).
DeleteIt shows, that the race for English number 1 on UEFA level is still quite open (while FIFA seems to prefer Oliver).
We all know that FIFA is a different story - politics, politics and not so much more, while UEFA insists on overall performance principle (not single mistakes) and analyzes strenghts and weaknesses of their referees quite well.
DeletePersonally, I have a rather particular view on both Michael and Anthony. I strongly prefer Michael in the Premier League while I see Anthony as more reliable in UEFA competitions. Maybe the European style suits better to Anthony who used to be a prison officer (and who perhaps can't adjust to English forced(?) instructions to be in the background as much as possible while being alert and in full control at the same time).
Thank you for your analysis Vlad.
DeleteOne can say the change of referring chief has made impact on Oliver and Taylor. It was clear Collins preferred Oliver more and pushed him to the quater final stage quite early and that preference has continued towards in FIFA but rosseti has come into UEFA and tried to slow his rapid rise because for one he is very young *oliver And has all the time in the world to achieve everything in UEFA level but for Taylor who is 40years has a limited year to spend at elite level maximum 6years hence the rise of Taylor under Rossetti
DeleteDiego Barbero Sevilla fourth official in Arsenal - Napoli, very particular to underline that his last appointment had been in the same role for Salzburg - Napoli with del Cerro Grande. Very rare to happen.
ReplyDeleteHowever, all the other members from Spanish crew are different.
Good farewell for Mallenco and good appointments for english referees and good chance for Zwayer to recovery
ReplyDeleteMichael Oliver is again with Deaconu, after Real-Juventus last season in Champions League. For me, this is a surprise. I didn't expect Oliver with Deaconu, I expected another referee for Vilarreal -Valencia. Still a romanian oficials for this two teams. Both Hategan and Kovacs had this teams and now is Deaconu as referee observer.
ReplyDeleteIf is his last match, will be a very good end for Undiano Mallenco in european competitions. Very long and successful career ;)
ReplyDeleteOnly the 1 penalty and 0 red cards from the Champions League QF first leg:
ReplyDeleteTottenham v Manchester City - Handball with on field review
https://streamable.com/iwiyy
I managed to watch all four Champions League quarterfinals (Easter break :-D) and I write a superficial summary of all games below.
ReplyDeleteTOTTENHAM HOTSPUR - MANCHESTER CITY
Ref: Björn Kuipers | VAR: Danny Makkelie
As always, a pleasure to see the great Dutchman officiate. This game was a typical Premier League game, technically sophisticated football being fully in focus and very different from a 'fight'. As Vlad excellently outlined in his analysis of Oliver / Taylor, Kuipers fulfilled the PL style: remaining in the background but keeping the concentration and moving in when necessary.
It seems to have gone unnoticed here, but his warning to Laporte for dissent at ≈40' was world class; not only was it prevention with Laporte already cautioned, but it calmed the game down with the first player-player conflict of the match coming seconds before. Kuipers allowed the match to return to calm by delivering a slow verbal warning (which reached its target by the way)- sth any referee can learn a lot from.
Where the refereeing can be distinguished from a typical PL game was the penalty call, recommended by Makkelie. A decision the media here almost universally agreed was totally wrong, reading the tabloid newspapers in the hairdressers yesterday was an interesting experience; one can look forward to VAR in England next season...
On the contrary to what those 'experts' tell us, an excellent spot by Makkelie, and the best Ref-VAR team in the world again showed flawless cohesion to reach the correct decision. Well Done.
Delph on Kane was a tackle of a RC format, but a totally pure accident, and Makkelie would have quickly checked the replays to confirm that Mahrez' pull remained outside the penalty area.
This was 'just' another good performance by the Dutch team in a big UEFA game, what we can be so used to.
=> Good performance in an easy-going match, crucial decision correctly evaluated.
LIVERPOOL - FC PORTO
DeleteRef: Antonio Mateu Lahoz | VAR: Jesús Gil Manzano
A pleasant football match for Mateu to take charge of, technically strong and players focused on playing football. His approach helped facilitate that.
Let me say what I appreciate about him is that despite his very (unique) friendly attitude with the players, he is not afraid to issue cautions for dissent, even early in the game, where others would not. Other caution after a delayed whistle for a reckless tackle was correct. I like the PLAY ON decisions for all three in-box situations, there are arguments for a whistle but not enough to warrant a whistle for my taste. One situation characterised this performance though.
At 83', Salah was penalised for this foul which Mateu assessed as careless (thanks Jackson! https://streamable.com/6hh77). Game was restarted without any insinuation that there was an Official check taking place. This left quite an unsatisfying impression, and many users here suggested that the Spanish team made a crucial mistake here. Let me say, in defense of Mateu, I am sure that he missed the severity of the foul on an expectation-perception-recognition level, which explains the whistle but no card. In my opinion, there are two ways to look at this situation:
1) To not evaluate this tackle as Serious Foul Play is symptomatic of the current UEFA attitude that as long as there are no severe injuries, no RC is needed. The revisionism of SFP in the modern days is unacceptable and dangerous for the players.
2) Tackle fulfilled all criteria for SFP but not the intensity. General trend for such fouls is to look at how intense the game is being played -> RCs in the Italy - Uruguay WC 2014 and recently Bosnia–Herzegovina - Greece game came against the background of players engaging in a 'fight' of a match. In case of a calm match where everyone is playing 'nicely' (as this was), a YC is basically okay.
I know which approach I find more edifying, but I think there is quite a high chance that UEFA will support Gil Manzano's decision not to call Mateu to an OFR.
=> Good performance in an easy-going game, but a doubtful evaluation of the crucial situation.
MANCHESTER UNITED - FC BARCELONA
DeleteRef: Gianluca Rocchi | VAR: Massimiliano Irrati
Regarding the overall impression from the four matches, no doubts this was the most negative one, but this was not such a bad performance from the Italian I think.
The match played into Rocchi's hands regarding his disciplinary control, after the warning at 3' for the clear YC (he used a delayed whistle anyway, somehow I think he wanted to stay in the background early), he then very well signalised that “well I gave you one chance, so I give you a chance as well” for the quite reckless revenge foul a minute later. Not the best procedure, but the players and audience knew what he was trying to hit on. Then, a caution each in the 1H for tactical fouls, the latter was rather for lack of respect than SPA as Messi was running quite wide. Of the three cautions in 2H, I would only really blame Rocchi for the last, the first two were very well executed simulations that were de facto impossible to detect, but the last for Smalling was just a bad call.
Some late whistles and smaller mistakes in foul detection made the overall impression slightly worse, at least players responded generally quite well to Rocchi, who shows it is possible to be sharp and not a ‘policeman’ on the pitch.
Matteo Passeri’s call to disallow the Barcelona goal was among the worst that I ever saw in CL, one can be thankful for VAR. It is noticeable that Italy has gone through a generation change in assistant referees.
=> Satisfactory performance in normal game, but not more.
AJAX - JUVENTUS
DeleteRef: Carlos del Cerro Grande | VAR: Alejandro Hernández Hernández
The best performance from this week’s matches, del Cerro Grande with another very good showing and his rise would seem to be an exponential one through UEFA.
His approach allowed a very good football match, and I only remember one fault with the disciplinary control, I would have liked some warning at 52’ for SPA-esque foul. He was just unlucky with the delayed whistle at the end of 1H, in a hot game one can criticise him for such tactic, but not really here. Correct no penalty for Juventus for small pulling in the 2H.
I am always fascinated when watching del Cerro for his deep insight for when to leave the background and when to get involved, which is crucial to his success on the pitch with his style, which one can easily mistake for passivity. His physical condition is excellent, but I also want to praise his mental strength, which in each game that I saw him (CdR Final 2016 and SCH-MNC especially) was first class, he was as ‘fresh’ blowing the first whistle as he was the last. As someone who often gets angry during his games, I can only admire his meditative-esque calmness throughout.
It is partly unfair to say that all his progress can be testament to IFAB clearances regarding VAR and being Rosetti’s protégé, for sure these helped, but his performances have been flawless this season, and he came into the spotlight all by his own work in Copa del Rey Final of 2016.
Probably this is his last UEFA match of the season, but he is on a very good road to EURO 2020. Remarkable progress.
=> Very good performance in a partly challenging game.
If you got to the end of these summaries, well done!
Apologies for taking up much valuable comment space, I hope you enjoyed reading them in any case.

Good to see that Karasev is already back - I think, it was reported here, that he would miss the rest of the season.
DeleteMost likely he won't be considered for an EL QF next week, but the next EURO qualifiers might be possible for him.

I realy don't understand the logic. Almost every weekend Bebek is there and only as fourth official. I guess they must pay him a lot since he is there every weekend.
DeleteI know I've mentioned it before. But in all honesty. Do any Saudi referee's actually get to officiate any games in their home country?
DeleteYes, Sheriff. Saudi referees - also the ones with FIFA badge - handle games up to First Division (second tier).
DeleteThat's terrible that they (including FIFA referee's) are considered inferior and only good enough to handle second tier matches in their home country.
DeleteOT:
ReplyDeleteDiego Costa got a ban for 8 matches after his sending off in FCB-ATM. 4 matches for the RC after telling to Gil Manzano "me c*** en tu p*** madre" and 4 more for repeatedly grabbing Gil Manzano's arms in order to avoid more bookings for dissent for Atlético players.
Excellent decision.

Delete3 derbys this weekend in Spain:
ReplyDeleteReal Sociedad - Éibar (Jaime Latre)
Valencia - Levante (Undiano Mallenco)
Leganés - Real Madrid (Medié Jiménez)
Sevilla - Betis (Hernández Hernández)
Early penalty for Valencia, clear case, excellent positioning by Oliver. Penalty is saved, rebound is scored. Many players entered the penalty box way before the kick was taken. Goal counted.
ReplyDeletePenalty should have been retaken no? i don't remember the rule.
DeleteCorrect penalty in Villarreal for Valencia by Oliver. If advantage had not been taken, it should have been repeated as the GK was not on the line.
ReplyDeleteGK off the line and many players from both team in the box before the kick
DeleteReferees are ignoring this rule for 3-4 years and still, we are talking about it :)
DeleteI don't say it's wrong, just can't see the point
Then IFAB should save ink and remove it from the Laws of the Game. Since its not being enforced anyways.
DeletePenalty + RC by Taylor well done!
ReplyDelete100% correct. Pushing and therefore no chance to play the ball —> dogso RC
DeleteYou mean no attempt to play the ball.
DeleteAnother correct penalty call by Oliver, this time for Villareal.
ReplyDelete2-2 by Frankfurt disallowed by Taylor and Beswick.
ReplyDeleteI think correct decision, an attacker in offside interfered with keeper.
Without VAR, this cooperation is even more appreciable.
School example of offside and school exanple of good teamwork.
Deletemmmh not for me. The player who interfers clearly by lifting his foot was probably not offside. I‘m not so sure if the other stikers who were off interfered with play; for me not but very difficult live. Maybe someone has a link for a video? ;)
DeleteHalf of his body was off, I just cheked (drew the line) :)
DeleteOk thanks! :) Swiss television was not sure if he was on or off but I‘m glad someone checked it carefully!
DeleteExpected level by Undiano in first half. Game was not difficult.
ReplyDeleteNot the best fitness, he interfered with play in a situation, but we can surely close our eyes. The last (?) game in European competitions for him is going well.
I disagree Howard, sorry. First penalty very soft. Small contact, attacker exaggerating his fall. But you can support this decision if you want.. Second penalty is wrong in my opinion. Light holding and then after few steps he goes down to
ReplyDeleteeasily. At this level such penalty's are not acceptable. His foul detection is inconsistent and his management fussy. He looks very laconic and is too much passive in his running.
You must be joking anonymous or you are not watching the same game as I am. Oliver has been spot on. On the contrary everything you said is the reverse. It's is a well documented fact that his fitness is the best in England.. I can only decipher from your comment that you do not like Oliver at all which is fine but don't let the hate cloud your sense if judgement and make you biased. Only issue in his match was encroachments
DeleteOliver also had to retake the first PK because of clear encroachment. The attacker who encroached scored the goal after it was saved by the GK.
DeleteIt does become obvious chiagozie that every time Oliver is criticized you appear to defend him, and you let no opportunity go by to promote Oliver (especially over Taylor). So maybe you should try to not let your judgement be clouded by your adoration of Oliver ;)
DeleteI'll step in as well then. Michael Oliver's fitness and positioning is superb. How could not see how well he was positioned on BOTH penalty incidents. Simply excellent. Once Clattenburg got older he became England's fittest referee. I won't try to hide that I'm a massive fan of Oliver's but your comments, anonymous, about being "laconic and passive" are simply wrong.

DeleteFor your info am no fan of any am just being objective that's the best way to live. What will i gain. There were challenges for Oliver in this game but the ones pointed at here by you are not true in any ramification
DeleteUndiano Mallenco missed yellow card for Hysaj's blatant holdning on Lacazette around 38th, when he took the advantage in use.. He would have been off now
ReplyDeleteCorrectly disallowed goal by AR1 in London.
ReplyDeleteOliver:
ReplyDeletehttps://streamja.com/33lA
https://streamja.com/GjpO
In my opinion both are supportable decisions, but both are soft. I have also doubts about the first one and I disagree with Howard there, not a clear one for me. Second even less...
First one is supportable, second one is too soft IMO.
DeleteI think the second one is wrong if it is for the "touch" on the feet. Can be supported if it is for the holding and if that is inside the PA. The player falls because of the dispute, and before the touch is already unbalanced.
DeleteThe first one is clear for my taste, the second not so obvious though.
DeleteThe first penalty is absolutely nailed on for me. Why are we second guessing a referee who is close, has a clear angle and is in an excellent position.
DeleteThis replay here for me shows it is 100% a penalty:
https://streamable.com/nfxg8
Yes it should have been retaken for the encroachment but I honestly don't see how that isn't a penalty again highlighting the excellent position of the referee.
I'm sorry, but the first one is absolutely clear for me. Surely the attacker makes the most of it, but it is a rather clumsy challenge, he hits his opponent, who goes down.
ReplyDeleteThe second one is not so clear, but he definitely falls into his opponent's leg while going down. However, the attacker continues moving before choosing to go down. Supportable call, but I agree it looked clearer on the first view.

Benfica: It’s not a push. He was too close and accidentally got stuck on the opponents foot. Still a red card but that’s where the foul was. Trip not a push.
DeleteStill a not genuine attempt to play ball (charging an opponent) so RC fully correct.
DeletePredictions second legs:
ReplyDeleteEintracht Frankfurt - Benfica Orsato
Napoli - Arsenal Hategan
Valencia - Villarreal Collum
Chelsea - Slavia Praha Soares Dias
OT
ReplyDeleteThere are some rumors that Rizzoli have an offer from China to move and have a games there. 1 milion euros per year is offer.
False.
DeleteI guess that Brych, Cakir and Kuipers are quite sure for Cl semifinals. fourth names, IMO, depends from Ajax's qualification, form which depends presence of Makkelie. Turpin could a valid alternative.
ReplyDeleteSo I see Turpin (or Makkelie), Hategan, Orsato and Undiano for EL SF, hence I would predict Marciniak, Collum, Skomina and Kralovec for El quarter final second leg. Does it makes sense for you ?
I think it is too early to see Makkelie in a CL SF. He should get an El SF before. Taylor can be in EL SF first leg if Arsenal or Chelsea do not qualify. I don't think we will see Undiano in SF.

ReplyDeleteIt's reported that from Spain are coming Estrada Fernández and De Burgos Bengoetxea.
I can formally confirm that Undiano officiated his last UEFA competition match last night. Congratulations on an amazing career, best wishes for the future!!
ReplyDeleteOn paper, there would be still the chance to get a EURO 2020 qualifying game...
DeleteMy information is that UEFA don't plan to appoint him again (inc. CL/EL, NL or EURO Qual.), and that the Arsenal - Napoli game was treated even formally as a "farewell game" for him.
DeleteAnyway, congratulations on a very long career at a high level, FIFA referee since 2004 (!) and record number of Primera matches. Thank you, Alberto!
If you look for the photos that both Estrada Fernández and Munuera Montero (both his AARs today) have uploaded to their Instagram accounts you really feel that it was his very last game.

ReplyDeleteThe draws for the African nations cup have taken place in Egypt. With a record 24 teams participating which means more referees. It is happy times here in Africa as we await the AFCON to begin
Now is oficial about Istvan Kovacs who is selected for the Euro Under 21, the news is from Romanian Federation. In Italy will also be Kabakov, Treimanis, Grinfeld, Kulbakov, who is a surprise for me, Madden, Gozbuyuk, Ekberg, and I don't know who could be from Serbia. I guess this are the referees who will be in Italy and San Marino.
ReplyDeleteThanks for having reported this news!

So, according to the article:
Romania = István Kovács
Bulgaria = Georgi Kabakov
Serbia = Srđan Jovanović
Israel = Orel Grinfeld
Belarus = Alexey Kulbakov
Latvia = Andris Treimanis
Netherlands = Serdar Gözübüyük
Scotland = Robert Madden
Sweden = Andreas Ekberg
From Serbia? Jovanovic, I guess.
DeleteMadden was already confirmed, but...also Gözübüyük again? They had, I don't know, Agayev available?
I can understand it, also. But in terms of searching for early prospects for Elite Category, First Category is too "overaged".
And, anyway, it's just a U21 tournament, instead of repeating referees I'd selected others, no matter if they're not Elite prospects anymore (e.g. Gestranius, Zelinka, Bognár, Özkahya...)
