UEFA YOUTH LEAGUE SEMIFINALS & FINAL - Referee appointments

96 comments:

  1. Roberto Rosetti with the first official observation as Head of UEFA Referees Committee: he will watch Schärer (SUI) in a semifinal.
Letexier (FRA) is confirmed as appointed for the final.
Still my big thank to Kronika sędziowska for the appointments.

  2. Letexier already with good appointments in Nations League (LTU-ROU) and EURO qualification (CYP-BEL) - excellent perspectives for him at the age of only 30 (since yesterday...).

Schärer (also 30) with the advantage of being his country's number one already and the FIFA focus (U20WC) very likely to be promoted as well.

Peljto is older and less experienced on European level - here it is not so clear, how much he can reach in the future.

    1. I am happy for Letexier. I think he is doing a great season in Ligue 1 with a good progression. I only saw Schärer one time in a Ligue 1 game last year but I am happy for him too :D

    1. Having watched him in both Sarajevo - Željezničar and his EL debut, I have to say that I always saw Irfan Peljto as material for Elite Cat. and I'm glad that UEFA sees him alongside Schärer and Letexier for that.

  4. Wow, Schärer observed by Rosetti. So, maybe the most important match of his international career, including Euro u19.

Peljto and Letexier appointed also for decissive games. It will be interesting to see which referees get promoted to First this summer, there are more and more candidates...

It seems as Hobber Nilsen was attacked by both teams at the final whistled of Pyramids - Zamalek. Maybe some controversial decisions there? However, in any case, it is always difficult to officiate such games in hot countries. There is a strong rivalry.

In any case, sorry for Nilsen, this is unacceptable.

    3. For sure if you appoint a referee from Norway for such matches, you must select a very experienced one at international level.
The Norwegian standard domestic background is clearly not enough to be ready for such hot games. Even Elite referees from UEFA can have troubles there.

  7. Can somebody tell Andre Marriner that as a professional referee he is allowed to do more than just walk around the field and occasionally break into a jog. Wouldn't hurt to see some Sprinting to get position and angle every once in awhile.

  8. Hugely controversial penalty call by Siebert in the Cup semi-final Bremen vs Bayern. Hosts had come back from being 0-2 down when Siebert whistled a penalty for a minimal shove. No VAR intervention. Crucial mistake for me. Apart from that, in many phases of the game I found his match control and player management to be weak.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. For me also too soft and a crucial mistake. I think, no VAR intervention is however correct according to the guidelines, because the error is not clear and obvious - there is a small push and there are some referees, who would call the decision acceptable. So unfortunately the VAR could/should not recommend an OFR.
About the general performance: IMO the weak control and management only started after the 2-2 goal. In the first half he was quite visible with a strict foul detection, but he explained his decisions well and kept the control. At the beginning of the second half, he stayed more in the background, because the game allowed it. In the last part, it then became very challenging with a lot of unsporting behaviour, conflicts between players and dissent - the penalty call obvious didn't help.

    3. Yes, too soft for me too. Coman was not well in control of the ball too.

      Delete
    4. Not a penalty but VAR is right in supporting the call.
The classic situation that it is discussed here in Italy, many people want that VAR can intervene also in these situations, but it is a question of protocol.

      Delete
    5. DFB evaluated is a wrong penalty and a missing OFR. Unfortunately they don't say exactly, whether they see it as a clear and obvious mistake or a wrong perception by the referee. They only stated that the communication between referee and VAR did not go well.

An assumption is, that Siebert saw a contact with the feet, but the VAR thought, he punished the push.

      Delete
    6. My thoughts were the same as users' above - maybe not clear penalty but OFR shouldn't be recommended.

I have a feeling that people from DFB RefCom like to see red cards and penalties being annulled but are not happy to see OFR for potential penalty and potential red cards. Strange.

      Delete
    7. After another interview it is now clearer, that the referee punished a not existing contact with the feet (i.e. tripping). Therefore an OFR was needed (clearly wrong perception), but due to bad communication the VAR thought the referee punished the push and confirmed that contact.

  9. I watched Ola Hobber Nilsen handle the Pyramids FC - Zamalek SC game.

    Crucial Situations:

30' Penalty assigned to Pyramids for pulling
    https://youtu.be/ttDtwrBP4es?t=2228

44' Penalty appeal of Zamalek for handling
    https://youtu.be/ttDtwrBP4es?t=2979
    https://youtu.be/ttDtwrBP4es?t=3049 (Further replays)

Without going into a full summary, Nilsen overall did OKAY. His strengths were bravery (very courageous penalty at 30'), fitness and card selection. Foul detection was ambivalent. His weaknesses were management of the players, taking control of the match (32' aside), being an accepted leader on the match (lacking firmness) but most importantly missed penalty for Zamalek for a fully deliberate handball at 44'.

Very challenging game, Nilsen solved it in a satisfactory way but made a crucial mistake relevant for the outcome. My feeling is that this game asked too much of the Norwegian and needed a referee with a greater experience at an international level.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Why is 44 ''fully deliberate''? He makes a try to block the shot and has his arm in a completely natural position low level. The new handling clarifications are not in use yet either. No problem to play on.

  11. Hi guys, sorry for bothering, I have a question.
Few months ago, somebody on this forum mentioned that there is a rumour Adidas won't supply FIFA and UEFA referees with jerseys anymore. Is that true? Do you have any info’s?

    1. I don't know about FIFA but in UEFA it's true. The new kit supplier starting from July will be Macron.

    2. I can confirm.

Unfortunately, if you ask me... Adidas is symbol for referee's kits

    3. Here you can see their current referee kits:
      http://macron.rs/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Football_all.pdf
They also call themselves "OFFICIAL UEFA REFEREE MATCH KIT SUPPLIER" in there.

    4. If those are the kits, I wish UEFA had continued with Adidas :(

      Delete
    5. Well, after a supposed tendency towards Italian appointments, now it comes to Italian (uglier) kit suppliers! Not bad.

Let's see what happens in Germany/Spain next season too.

      Delete
    6. Yep. Some months ago, we were told that Adidas will become kit suppliers not only for Spanish professional referees but also for Regional and grassroots referees. Let's see if it has some influence at the end (I hope not).

  12. Thanks guys for answer!
Well I must agree, I am very sorry for Adidas!
DrMr you are true, Adidas is somehow symbol for referee.

I am now watching statistics in Zvezda-Partizan match, which is always hot match.
Today Novak Simovic handled match,he issued 9 yellow and 1 red card but most shocking stat out of all is number of fouls.
According to rezultati.com,it was 31-27 in favour of Zvezda, almost 60 fouls (!!!???).That is unbeliavable.

  15. Decisive goal (4-3) in the dying stages of yesterday's game Pogoń Szczecin - Lechia Gdańsk. Everyone but Marciniak sees the foul here. Zbigniew Boniek says on Twitter it's a fair challenge and people should stop cry. No comment...

    2. I already wrote that. Some Zbigniew Boniek rules:

      1. Zbigniew Boniek knows better than others, also about refereeing.
      2. That's why head of referees can't explain decisions.
      3. Every critic is an enemy.
      4. You have a different point of view? You have to be attacked personally to change a subject of discussion...
      5. ...or Zbigniew Boniek has to mention that he played better than current players and on his days (bla, bla, bla)...
      6. You all know nothing about football.
      7. Zbigniew Boniek has no time to discuss. End of topic.

    3. And of course it will be Daniel Stefański (from Bydgoszcz, Boniek's city, living in Warsaw) who will handle the biggest duel of the season between Lechia Gdańsk and Legia Warszawa (top 2, the same amount of points).

Of course, he will be assisted (as always) by Marcin Boniek, Zbigniew's nephew. This duo (Stefański and Boniek jr) is frequently appointed to biggest games (either championship or relegation battle) either as REF-AR or VAR-AVAR, or VAR-AR.

  16. I watched Michael Fabbri handle the final of the Emir Cup between Al-Kuwait - Al-Qadisiyah, with his Kuwaiti-Italian ad hoc team.

    Crucial situation(s):

=> 55' Referee evaluates this situation as a simulation, and confirms this decision having been called to an On-Field Review by Marco Di Bello VAR.
    https://youtu.be/V6SE7ZGFbKk?t=3817

After all that happened in Turin for him, let me say well done to Fabbri who took the required time and got the decisive angle (last one) in so order to confirm his original decision under much pressure and images that suggested a penalty.

Speaking generally, expected level performance in a rather unremarkable game that passed without any problems.

  20. In co-operation with Mikael W, here are the refereeing highlights from yesterday's Youth League semi-final Hoffenheim - Porto (Irfan Peljto):

    1st Half: https://streamable.com/wxims?fbclid=IwAR0bPHNhge1PvUAy4xrcIF4pVgafBPbHt-cPU9CD5V4PpwY6Ld_AsnNCNxE

I agree with what Ref545 has said: Good performance by Peljto! The game itself was rather quiet in the first half, while the second half was a rather one-sided affair. We had only a few rougher challenges, but a number of fouls that seemed like more than they were as the players were trying to sell them. Peljto was uninterested in those, good!

I would really like to see him in a qualifier in June. There are plenty of matches (either "small ones" or slightly bigger ones) he could be appointed to.

  24. Very strong performance by Zwayer in Dortmund-Schalke, the biggest derby in Germany. He manages to calm things down as soon as strong emotions arise. Also good foul and card management.
However there is one big talking point, a penalty after OFR: (thank you IG Schiedsrichter on Facebook for the video link)

    1. The penalty is controversial but Ok for me. But was there really an OFR necessary?

Apart from that as mentioned good first half by the German, hopefully he can move on in a probably challenging 2nd half soon

      Delete
    2. Zwayer didn‘t give the penalty at first. Then VAR suggested an OFR. I think it would have been better for the VAR not to intervene

      Delete
    3. Probably Zwayer didn't see the handball himself, therefore it was a "missed incident" and the OFR necessary.

    2. The tackle is not from behind (contrary to the two Red Cards) and only hits the foot. Therefore YC is acceptable here for me - I would say a 50:50 call. Maybe the two RCs for the other team are an argument to tend towards Red - but it is debatable whether that should have an influence.

    1. I'm sure he will be backed in all major decisions. But I understand why there will be a huge controversy made out of it. The handball call is correct, but unpopular and while the RCs are also correct, even worse fouls have gone unpunished in Germany this season. That creates a balancing problem, especially since McKennie did not get the same treatment for a similar attack. Only difference was it didn't come from behind, but the intensity was larger and the studs hit the ankle. Biggest mistake in the match for me.

    Penalty possible handball,90 min.

  29. Video about the controversial handball incident in Atlético-Valladolid. Melero López missed it and decided NO penalty against Atlético after VAR intervention and an OFR. Valladolid supporters are very angry, this match is decisive for relegation.

IMO, crucial mistake, Arias makes himself bigger and intercepts with his arm a header on goal. Maybe Melero López thought that there was not enough distance?

Foul before own goal, which in the end was the only one. VAR did not intervene.

      Delete
    5. Looks like a clear foul by #7 ATL. This is enough for a whistle.

      Delete
    6. The handball incident is definitely punishable. Arm is in unnatural position even though the distance is too small.

2nd scene is a clear foul. Sorry for the referee but there are 2 clear mistakes.

      Delete
  30. Foul or simulation? No OFR.

    https://streamable.com/mzn0h

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Simulation (or play on) is correct for me. No contact with the feet and the holding is too small. The leg movement of the falling player also looks unnatural.
Probably the VAR should (and maybe did) confirm that the referee saw the upper contact. If not, an OFR might be sensible.

      Delete
    2. Simulation in my opinion.

      Delete
    3. IMO, the holding is not too small. I don't think that it's worthy of a penalty but simulation seems too much.

      Delete
    4. I would prefer a penalty, to be honest. Impeding progress is clear, imho.

      Delete
    5. It is simulation. This is a situation where it is very important to look at it in full speed as the slow motion replays are very deceptive.

The other GK colours seem to be blue and black, which would have been difficult with Barca kits - but it must be possible to find a better solution.

  32. He was never motivated in this match, not even in the first half. The missed advantages, as Quilava said, are due to lack of focus. Nothing new there, he has many matches like this. In others he's very good, but in others he doesn't reach the required level.

    1. Live it looked like clear offside, I can understand the mistake by AR! Then, once ONSIDE, handball must be whistled and RC for me to be issued.

    2. No penalty in my opinion (and according to next season's LotG...) - but I am not sure whether that is clear enough for a VAR intervention

      Delete
    3. OK, reading Chefren's opinion, it obviously is not clear. ;)

      Delete
    4. Why does the referee after OFR, he restarts the match with drop ball?

      Delete
    5. Because originally he had whistled for offside, VAR checked that it didn't exist, so dropped ball (as it happens when there is a wrong whistle by referee).

      Delete
    6. @Vlad can I ask, what is your opinion about the hanabdall?
I know that referees in Poland are strict with handballs, so I'm quite surprised by this choice.

      Delete
    7. And another handball penalty incident from this game!

      https://streamable.com/cr8xt

As Legia managed to score the winning goal, I can imagine how angry Lechia's fans will be.

Well, Chefren, after intervention from UEFA our interpretation is allegedly the same as UEFA's one.

My opinion is that both handballs are not deliberate in the real meaning of the word. The ball bounced off the body at first in both incidents.

I can see a small difference though. In the first incident, the player throws himself into the ground in order to block a shot, his hand is significantly outstretched. Play-on call is not a clear mistake but one can discuss. In the second incident, the player again throws himself in order to block a shot but the ball is blocked by leg and the player's arm is quite naturally positioned (while falling).

On the other hand (that's how handball was interpreted in the past in Poland), one can say that the player, who throws himself in order to block a shot, takes the risk and if the ball touches his arm that is not stuck to the body, he should be punished (no matter if the ball hits the other part of the body before or not).

      Delete
    8. @Chefren, the answer for the dropped ball is not that simple. We must watch this video closely and keep in mind all the protocols.

The referee whistled for the handling and penalty. The AR had delayed his flag and gave the offside late so the OGSO could develop. The ONLY reason the offside could even be checked is because a penalty was awarded. If a penalty was not awarded, offside is not a reviewable decision.

So the VAR reviews the offside and realizes it is clearly wrong. At this point, the call is a penalty.

But the VAR and Referee decide, after an OFR, that it is not a penalty. I think that is a wrong decision, personally. At this point, however, the decision would become a dropped ball IF the referee whistled for the penalty while the ball was still in play.

      But he didn't.

The ball was already out for a corner kick when he awarded the penalty. The corner kick would have been the fair and correct restart.

Giving the ball to the defending goalkeeper via a dropped ball after the referee team thought it was whistling for a penalty (and incorrectly tried to call offside) is a huge injustice to the attacking team.

      Delete
    9. Good remark.
So actually two mistakes independent from the handball assessment:
      - OFR was not required, because the handball penalty was at least not a clear and obvious mistake
      - wrong restart - should have been a corner (or penalty)
