Maybe the idea is to use some of them also for the KO stage later this year?

    2. Yes, exactly. Some referees with experience in KO stages and Nation League A, and some with less experience than the ones mentioned.

    3. Agreed. To be honest, it seems like the criterion for selection was "will this be useful to have in his palmarés for later in his career?".

It's not fair to mention names amongst the twelve-strong squad in particular, but if I were the refs that Quilava mentioned, I would be pretty miffed about UEFA's choices.

With that being said - good luck to all the selected match officials!

  10. De Burgos Bengoetxea's ARs for this tournament will be José Enrique Naranjo Pérez (regular AR1 of Alejandro Hernández Hernández) and Íñigo Prieto López de Ceráin (regular AR1 of José Luis Munuera Montero + regular AR2 of José María Sánchez Martínez in UEFA matches)

  13. Tough and intense PSV - Ajax for Makkelie today, especially the last 15 minutes. Correctly disallowed goal in 78' by VAR (Kamphuis) for handball, difficult penalty situation in 82' (not given), possible RC (SFP) in 86' and penalty given in 90', after which both captains showed unsportsmanlike behavior and had to be held back by other players. Does someone have clips of the situations by any chance?

    1. IMO PSV deserved a penalty and Ajax a red card. Penalty to Ajax is really, really soft. Not a good day for Makkelie and Kamphuis.

    3. I don't agree on the last one. Where does the defender have to keep his hands otherwise?

      Delete
  14. On ESPN chairman Dick van Egmond just explained in the weekly VAR reportage that all decicions of Makkelie were correct and justified.

    He said that:

    - that the penalty for Ajax was a clear handball offence. Note: after the match Dumfries admitted he did it on purpose to block the shot
    - that the potential red card was a step on foot without brutality or force and therfore a yellow card
    - that the disallowed goal of PSV was correct for an attacking handball immediately leading to a goal scored

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The second point is really weird. It is stamp on the leg and he does it on purpose. Crystal clear RC

      Delete
    2. You may consider it weird, but the LOTG demand brutality. Yes, it was on purpose. No, it was not the leg, it was on the foot. No, there was no high intensity nor brutality. That’s why the Dutch Head of Refereeing clearly said this is deemed a YC.
I for me think it’s weird you consider the handball penalty soft. Arm is far out from the body and arm moves to the ball. An ultimate attempt to stop ansjovis on goal. Actually it’s so clear that the defender involved admitted it was a penalty.

      Delete
    3. ansjovis is nice to have on my pizza, of course I meant ‘a shot on goal’ :)

      Delete
    4. Anonymous - your statement may be correct en praxis with current instructions, but is an incorrect reading of the laws.

"Violent conduct is when a player uses or attempts to use excessive force OR brutality against an opponent".

Surely, it's rather reasonable to assess deliberately stamping on an opponent with play stopped in a more than negligible manner as an "excessive" amount of force.

In my personal opinion, for what it matters, 86' should be a (clear) RC.

      Delete
    5. IMO it is a soft penalty, because he can put his hands nowhere else. You CAN give it, but then you must be consistent and give a penalty on the other side minutes earlier too

      Delete
    6. That may be your interpretation of the Law, and of course you’re entitled to that opinion.
A little peculiar though that you say “my statement IS an incorrect reading of the Laws”. Again that can be your opinion, but I think you weren’t involved in making the Laws.

Then, according to your explanation, every deliberate physical action (e.g. a push, a holding) against an opponent when not challenging for the ball and with more than negligible force should be assessed as a violent conduct, as when there’s no ball involved, no force whatsoever is needed/appropriate. In my view that’s not what the definition of violent conduct is aimed for.

The Laws are always up to interpretation to some
extent and concerning violent conduct your interpretation obviously differs from mine and the Dutch FA’s. Perfectly okay, but implying me incorrectly reading the Laws I strongly reject.

      Delete
    7. @bingo11 I don’t see what comparing a handball situation and a challenge has to do with consistency.

      Delete
    8. Anonymous - I agree with everything you said.

Decisions such as the RC given in the United States - Czechoslovakia game at WC 1990 are really not desirable, especially at the top level.

My point was a technical / lexical one, the LotG doesn't demand "brutality", it requires "brutality OR excessive force". KNVB (and UEFA / FIFA) is whom demands brutality!

    10. Ay, my apologies to Anonymous 00:31, I forgot that only the true hardliners, the knights of the refereeing of the past, the defenders of the red card as a form of art are allowed to offer their opinions here. Your contribution to this topic is close to non-existent, only trying to ridiculise me or my opinion. Instead you could have participated in the discussion, a shame for that one passage you spoiled your time on :)

    12. The whole discussion actually, I think, resulted from a misunderstanding. My point was merely that, according to the LotG, a violent conduct call on the grounds, not of "brutality", but "excessive force", would still be a sound one in the sense of the laws.

Practical considerations are, of course, much more relevant to us. Nobody (myself included) wants to see a dystopic situation as outlined in the second paragraph of the 23:16 post. I don't really think that's the crux of the point though.

For me, we are on the wrong track if situations such as 86' are not assessed as violent conduct. The stamp even in normal play would be considered at least reckless, and is a totally unnecessary action (play has stopped!) which is only targeted at hurting the opponent.

I am really convinced that if a red card was given in this situation, most (non-refereeing) people would have easily accepted it as ‘stupid’ of the offender, and not blamed the match officials (ie. seen the call as simply correct).

Nobody wants to see games with players unfairly sent off. But my feeling is that associations / confederations are trying too hard to find reasons to avoid red cards, and thus keeping games 11 v 11, at any cost.

      Delete
    13. @Anonymous - both are soft fouls, so if you don't whistle it on one side you must do the same at the other side

    4. @Anonymous

Now that Snoddy has resigned, he is replaced by former FIFA AR Jake Collin.

The 3rd foreigner on the Greek Referee Committee is Joao Capela (in charge of VAR). Fernandez Marin stopped in September 2020.

    5. Was Collin an AR in Clattenburg's team?

    6. He appears in some games with him. But no experience in this tough work. Maybe just brings his friend for some HFF money.

      Delete
    7. Yes, Collin was part of Clattenburg's team on 2016 Euro. He was also with him in Saudi Arabia. Now he will help Clattenburg with the appointments on SL1 and SL2.

But honestly I don't know his this will happen since Collin doesn't know any referee (perhaps except the FIFA ones) and surely he doesn't know the referees and AR's on SL2.

Until now Snoddy was in charge of the appointments in SL1.

What a game for 'Manolete', though! :D A pity that it had to go to ET after Piqué's goal in 90+3'.

      Delete
    4. What about the penalty situation in 19th minute (no penalty awarded to Barcelona)? It looked like a trip.

      Delete
    5. IMO, no handball is the better decision - nothing clear and obvious in any case. It's surely not deliberate: The player wants to and does play the ball with his chest and tries to pull the arm away. Whether the arm is in a natural position or not can be discussed, but then there is also the touch with his own chest, which is an argument against the penalty.

19' looks quite suspicious - the replays I saw are not completely clear, but it looks like tripping.

  24. I have always had the impression that Messi really respects Sánchez Martínez, he talks and interacts quite a lot with him but in a positive way and quite calmly and is something I do not see him doing with other referees such as Gil Manzano, Mateu or Hernández Hernández.

I know referees do not have to please superstars but I think is a sign of professional prowess to be respected by the greats of your sport.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. A funny aspect is that physically Sánchez Mártinez seems quite fragile and weak (the opposite to Alberola Rojas or even Del Cerro) but he has a hell of a character and almost in every match shouts and make angry gestures to the players, maybe even too much for my taste but I think is a fantastic referee with a great personality and as I said in my comment before I really think footballers and coaches respect him a lot.

      Delete
    2. I may be a bit biased because he's one of my favourite LaLiga referees, but I genuinely hope to see him as the next Spanish Elite referee.

Of course he can make mistakes and even have really poor performances if he's over-excited (Betis-Barcelona last year), but I like a lot his authority/presence despite being physically rather skinny. Also, he shouts way less to players now compared with his debut season in LaLiga in which he had to play the Rottweiler referee type.

      Delete
    3. I think it is a question of which kind of referees you like. Personally i am no fan of Sanchez Martinez because of His angry gestures and his kind of authority. i prefer referees like Alberola Rojas that are laughing with the players and so it seems that there are more on one level with the players. But like i said. It is probably a question of which kind of ref you prefer

      Delete
    4. I also watched him yesterday and liked his body language and gestures. He looked authentic and looked like he enjoyed being out on the field. Not everyone can shout and make gestures and still be authentic, some referees get angry and too worked up (tension can build up, they get too strict) but he looked always in control.I wouldn't compare him with another style and say it is better or worse - every referee needs to find his style where he can be best IMO.

      Delete
    5. I like Sánchez Martínez a lot. Very talented referee, IMO better than Gil Manzano.

      Delete
    6. The best ref is the one with different personalities. Martinez is always and always and always angry. It's a act, of course he is not actually angry. But people think he is. Look at Collina and Pitana, Héber Lopes, they switched personality based on situations.

IMO very big mistake by ref happens at 01.20 of this video. Ref whistles a foul for that position and potential goal opportunity denied by ref. He should allow position to continue till it finishes and then if he has a doubt about the position, he could request OFR. But he chose easy way and whistled.

Unfortunately he blew the whistle too early as another Athletic player scored, but... is it YC or RC? (Personally I'm fine with a YC but a lot of people asked for RC)

    1. Similar to Stieler in Atalanta's match, I think this can be YC and RC again, all up to the referee decision. I would prefer RC here but fine with YC. This case reminds me Irmatov in 2013 FIFA confederations cup Brazil-Italy match. He blew the whistler for a penalty and then Brazil's player scored a goal 1-2 seconds later. Irmatov decided to allow the Brazil's goal and gave no punishment for the Italian defender.

    2. So you practically say that you don't care what the referee has given - for you everything is right and supportable and the referee cannot be wrong. That pretty much summerise the attitude inside the referee circle and the genuine believe that we are gods and we can do whatever we want because we are not countable for our mistakes. Just great...

      Delete
    3. I am a good fan of Del Cerro Grande but bad whistle and crystal RC IMO....

      Delete
    4. IMO it's a red card.
The likelyhood that the attacker would have gained a good goal scoring opportunity if the foul wouldn't have happened, is quite big for me.

    5. Thank you Flipp and Referee analyst for the honest opinions. I, contrary to Chefren :), don't think that we are doing good to some collegues when we call their mistakes 'supportable decisions', 'grey area' or when they miss obligatory cards - 'lenient approach'. Only if we honestly point their mistakes we can achieve more consistency because exactly the referees' consistency is the biggest problem for the football people and the fans.

    6. Well, the question is, what the associations want. If they tell their referees, that such situations are a grey area and it's up to their interpretation (+ maybe game management etc), we can hardly criticize the referees for it.
Of course, we don't always know the instructions.
But the next indicator could be opinions on the situations. As soon as we see, that opinions (given with arguments) are split among "experts" like us here, we also can hardly describe it as a clear mistake by the referee.

However I generally agree, that it should be a goal to reduce the grey area to get more consistency in decisions. IMO, it would be quite helpful to get public information from the associations as often as possible about what they consider the best decision in debated situations.

On the actual situation: I consider ball control as a quite important factor for DOGSO, therefore I tend towards YC. But I also understand, why you argue for the RC here.
So it's a good example for what I said before: At the moment, I see it as grey zone, but I would be happy to hear an official statement, what the expected decision is - especially as such situations are not that rare.

    7. I agree with you Philipp about the point of the associations'preferences. But, still, they can SLIGHTLY differ - not to such extent. What is happening then in the European competitions when an English team is playing against a Spanish club and the referee is German for example??? Both teams don't know what rules the referee will apply and the fans don't understand what kind of sport they are watching... And, yes, more public info definately could help about the consistency of the decisions. But for some reason the referee unions behave like secret societies and don't give explanations and it is beyond me how the football world is allowing this...

You are right of course, but FIFA calculates that people would prefer to watch poorly refereed matches if it is exciting

    9. @ Kralazar Your comment is just ridiculous. I said in this situation, both YC and RC sounds fine for me. Did I ever tell you I do not care what the referee's decision is? I care and that is why I support the referee's decision in this particular case because I think YC is also ok (although I prefer RC). Of course, You can have different opinion on the situation itself, but STOP judging other readers/writers like this.

      Delete
    10. also @Kralazar, you commented "for you everything is right and supportable and the referee cannot be wrong". Let me ask you...where is "everything" coming from? where is "referee cannot be wrong" coming from? Did I ever say like this? Unlike you who like misunderstand/change other's viewing, I only give my honest opinion on the incident. I simply said either YC or RC is good for me (although I prefer RC), but I NEVER said referees can't be wrong. I said your comment is ridiculous because you can't understand what other people said and even try to change their meaning.

  34. If this is a penalty in Valencia - Villarreal game and the one in Liverpool - Chelsea is not, then I am sorry to say this but I am ashamed by IFAB and by the so called professional referees around the world. A sport with a more than 100-year history is about to be destroyed by a bunch of idiots who don't have a clue about football and don't take risponsibility for their actions.

    4. Penalty is the correct decision IMO - unnaturally increased body surface. One could disuss, whether it is "clear and obvious", especially as it did not seem obvious at all. However it probably was a missed incident, so the OFR was justified anyway.
And yes, the situation from England is also a handball IMO.

    5. Phillip, two people are jumping together in the air. They have pretty serious contact in the air. The attacker is much stronger than the defender. As a result the defender COMPLETELY lost balance and almost falls on his face. While falling he is spinning with his back to the opponent and try to balance with the hand - more than naturally. Even more - at the moment of the shot the defender is with his back to the attacker and there is absolutely no chance that he knows where the ball is.

      Delete
    6. For me, both VAR interventions of the match were wrong. In Spain, we don't have the "missed incident" concept to justify a VAR intervention: it has to be a clear and obvious mistake, and IMO none of them are so.

      Delete
    7. IMO it shouldn't be a VAR intervention, however, I think it's rather a PK.
The defender has his arm as far away from the body as possible and increases his body surface.
I would say that the defender has to know that his arm position could easily lead to a PK, therefore shouldn't go in the duel this way.

      Delete
    8. Without the missed incident concept, I also think, that the VAR intervention is wrong, because it is not clear enough.
And yes, the same counts for the second penalty - the contact is rather small and the attacker exaggerates it.

      Delete
    9. To be honest this "missed incident" concept can be only dangerous in my opinion. It allows too much discretion to VAR, he should ask for every incident, "did you see that?", before making a proper assessment about the incident. I think this is just something more that could be avoided. Intervention needed only in case of very evident mistake, unless referee has seen it or not, it shouldn't be too much important because it can make thigns even more complicated and in my opinion not all the VARs can be consistent in that, even more when they come from different countries than referees in UEFA games, there can be language's barriers.

  35. Marco Fritz (UEFA Second Category) will handle tonight's Bundesliga top clash ("German Clàsico") Bayern München - Borussia Dortmund.

    1. because imo he's a weak referee whose style suits only to Bundesliga

and now I know what I can expect from referee's performance in this great game

    2. Bit a weird choice IMO after his performance in the cup Wednesday

    3. What is your problem with his performance on Wednesday? Important decisions were absolutely fine.

      Delete
    4. Furthermore he is having a really good season, so a deserved appointment.
Just a bit surprising, because he had matches on Sunday and Wednesday after a (injury?) break for some weeks.

    5. Felix - The biggest problem was the penalty he gave to Wolfsburg. That wasn't a correct call.

      Delete
    6. IMO, Nkunku wasn't really aware of the contact and the contact was not much. In every case, it is not a clear and obvious mistake, so a VAR intervention is ridiculous.

      Delete
    7. Fritz looked after the ball. Everbody follows the shot in this situation. So we have a missed incident. Then Mbabu shot and Nkunku was too late. I don‘t understand how this can not be a penalty

      Delete
    8. As I said, IMO it's too soft but it seems you have another opinion, which is possible. The penalty he gave to Bayern now is indeed correct, but he had to see it by himself I think.

      Delete
    9. And a minute of ten ago, he missed a penalty for Dortmund

    10. german TV said that the contact was outside. Would like to see that one again. I also think that it was inside.

Juventus-Lazio handball situation, no penalty no VAR check.. Can someone tell me why? Ok, the distance is short, BUT am I the only one seeing an obvious reaction and redirection of the wrist ("smashing) towards the ball? I do not blame Massa, but VAR?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. This choice by Massa was very likely made because ball came from a deflection of a teammate, so unexpected ball. The reasoning is that defender wouldn't have never liked to send ball in teammate's arm. In all other cases, given the position of arms, it would have been indeed punishable. But I must say that not all the refereess apply this criterion, so it is alwys same problem, no consistentcy for handballs and it will be impossible to find it.
