  1. Karasëv for the EURO... Bayern - Lazio appointment tomorrow should also give us a EURO-related clue.

Excellent prediction from Chefren about Makkelie c. the controversial 1L of Atalanta - Real Madrid!

    ReplyDelete
  2. Yes Mikael and my original prediction for Manchester City - Borussia M. was Karasev as well... you can remember. This is the only chance for committee to justify the call for EURO. And I must say not so much deserved, if we want to use polite words. Now, in Bayern - Lazio one can just expect Sidiropoulos, despite of his very negative performance in Crvena Zvezda - Milan, that's how it works for bringing both at EURO. It's only this, not even a question of performances...
On the other hand, expected Makkelie in Madrid, another vey hot game for him, after first leg discussions, and with a very particular focus by Italy as always on UEFA referees. We will see how he will perform.

    1. Thanks you for your excellent blog.

May I ask about the statements on who will attend EURO, is the assumption/the normal situation that all referees appointed to a KO game will attend EURO and hence we now can expect Karasev?

      Many thanks

    2. The alternative to Sidiropoulos for Bayern-Lazio would be Kulbakov, if it's about preparing someone unexpected for EURO, I think.
Or Kovacs, but two Romanians are probably less likely than adding in a new country like Greece or Belarus.

And yes, I would agree, that this appointment means quite good chances for Karasev, if he doesn't spoil it.
And every other referee appointed in CL R16 should have even higher chances (given previous appointments).

      Delete
    3. Kulbakou is in Manchester on Tuesday :)

Agree with Philipp - 'candidates' should be Kovács, Sidiropoulos and I would add Collum too.

      Delete
    4. Kulbakov is FO with Karasev so that seems impossible to me :)

      Delete
    5. Chefren you were right, congratulations! I was expecting Karasev tomorrow in Munich.A risky appointment given the incident involving the head coach of Monchengladbach after the mistake of Karasev's team in the 2018 EL SF.

      Delete
    6. Thanks, missed that about Kulbakov.
Actually the match is in Budapest - and there were comments last week stating that Karasev wasn't allowed to referee in England (and he actually hasn't ever). This means, that his appointment could have only been done after the match was moved to Hungary - and that was just confirmed on Wednesday.

Yes, maybe it's Collum - but personally I would put him last among the mentioned candidates.

Another idea could be Marciniak with an easier game after his break.

      Delete
    7. Makkelie for Madrid-Atalanta could be expected after the very poor game by Stieler on first leg.
Now my question is: do we really need two German ref at Euro? I don't see any other top ref behind Brych and both Zwayer and Stieler had very poor matches when appointed as elite in CL

      Delete
    8. Collum won't be in Munich given the restrictions in Germany for anyone from the UK

      Delete
    9. Don't forget Oliver for Bayern Lazio that is always a possibility.

      Delete
    10. I echo Anonymous at 10:45: why a R16 appointment would suggest/support a Euro selection?

      Delete
    11. Because among the 27 Elite referees there are 11 names, who didn't seem to have much trust by UEFA in the last time or have other problems, so that their selection is quite unlikely: Kulbakov, Gil Manzano, Bastien, Aytekin, Zwayer, Sidiropoulos, Kovacs, Karasev, Collum, Kruzliak, Skomina.
That leaves us with only 16 referees, so UEFA must find approx. 2 more. One of them could be Frappart.
But it means, every indication, that UEFA trusts someone more than we thought, should mean, quite good chances for the EURO. And a CL R16 appointment clearly is such an indication.

Or in other words: If some of the R16 referees were not selected for EURO, this should mean vice versa that some EURO referees wouldn't get CL KO stage this season. And why should that be a good idea?

BTW, following those thoughts: Is it impossible to see Frappart in Munich?

      Delete
    12. Indeed, Frappart might be possible in Munchen.
Regardless, she will surely attend Euro. The current trend is clear and all PR messages by UEFA suggest the time has come to have a woman referee at a men's Euro. There is a reason and a logic behind all Frappart's appointments in men's competitions. I would be really surprised not to see her at Euro.

      Delete
    13. Some poor decisions in her last UWCL game. I would not expect her to receive a men's UCL appointment after this

      Delete
    14. It should be Oliver In Munich. After his EL game last week

      Delete
    15. He can't. Same as collum. Germany doesn't allow travel from UK

      Delete
  3. Pretty surprised by Karasev's appointment actually. Based on performance I doubt he deserved it, but probably 'needed' for EURO's indeed. Also means probably no R16 match for Mateu Lahoz. What's the logic behind that? Especially with the English refs out for the first legs, he could have had a match. Expect him for Milan - ManU on thursday now.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The Spanish Observer in Milan. Therefore, Mateu is impossible.

      Delete
    2. With two Spanish teams already out, there should be no problem to find a QF for Mateu, so he shouldn't worry too much. And yes, he probably will be used in EL then this week. I think, there just wasn't a suitable game for him this round in CL: He had Lazio and Leipzig on MD 5/6, ManCity-Gladbach didn't need a top 10 referee in the second leg and Juventus-Porto had a Spanish referee in the first leg already.

      Delete
  4. I wasn't expecting Karasev tbh. His performances don't justify a R16 appointment.

If he will go to Euro, it would be a first. A referee with so little appointments and mediocre performance to be selected on such a major tournament.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Karasev himself in 2018 probably would be the other example of a tournament selection with little backing by CL appointments (only 2 matches for him in 17/18).

      Delete
    2. If he goes to Euro this year, it will be his second Euro, after 2016. He only attended WC 2018 because the host country must always be represented.

      Delete
  5. In case Karasev is chosen for the Eurocup, it would be his second Euro, in addition to a World Cup and Olympic games. Incredible record for a mediocre referee.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. World Cup just because the tournament was played in Russia.
He is very lucky. However, I don't want to be so harsh, let's clarify, until a certain moment of his career, he had been excellent. He had also (hopefully I remember correctly) a game in CL KO stage when he was still Category 1 (should be 2013 or 2014) along with Mazic. But then in recent years he has been a huge disappointment game after game...
Originally, I liked his pure decisions making, he was a very rare example of very natural referee. Then, after that maybe something happened, but he didn't manage to convince more.
Alwyas crucial mistakes and poor games, maybe also a matter of motivations, but when you are called for tournaments without a real work or merit on it, like WC 2018, this is what can happen.
Still, I think he is by far better referee than Sidiropoulos, who, on the contrary, showed always to be weak even many years ago since his promotion to Elite.

      Delete
    2. Xabi I don't agree. Karasev is a smart referee, and his control and management of the game is at the highest level in UEFA. He fully deserves to work for the EURO if there are 18 refereeing teams.

      Delete
    3. Ok, maybe I was too harsh. I have nothing against Karasev and I wish him well. It is not personal. I just wanted to say that compared to him, there have been excellent referees who have never been in World Cups or Euros (Braschi, for example). I think he's very lucky

      Delete
    4. Fully agree with you Xabi. Olympic game, world cup and euro is an eccellente palmares and I think it is too much for what Karasev demonstrated

      Delete
    5. Xabi, I have the same idea as you. Meanwhile, I have not watched Karasev for a very long period of time (roughly 2-3 seasons) and I hope to see his improvement in this game.

      Delete
    6. Chefren, can you please provide some evidence from the last two years suggesting that Sidiropoulos is weak and should not have been in the Elite group? I have exactly the opposite piece of evidence: excellent performances this year on Leverkuzen-Slavia prague, Atalanda-Midiland, Man United-Lask and Italy-Bosnia qualifier. Correct decisions but lack of alertness to whistle immediately a clear penalty on Rennais-Krasnodar game. and a few grey area decisions on Red Star-Milan game that does not consist clear and obvious errors. I know plenty of Elite referees who have made similar mistakes in their games the last year. Sidiropoulos is a very reliable ref; he is one of the fittest and fastest refs in Europe as Bjorn Kuipers has said. He is not ready to ref heated games in Champions league but he has made a very good European career for nearly 10 years. He deserves a chance to ref one 'non-heated'game in the next Euro.

      Delete
    7. Red Star - Milan, Rennais - Krasnodar, Atalanta-Midtjylland, Napoli - Zurich, Rennaia - Betis a few of his matches with crucial mistakes.

And let's not forget that he was promoted to the Elite after the infamous Man. City - CSKA incident. Deserved promotion? Rather not.

      Delete
    8. I am asking about crucial mistakes in the last two seasons. His promotion was deserved; he had excellent performances in all other games excluding the City game, including an U17 final. There was crucial mistake on Rennais-Krasnodar game; a bad management of a situation happened. Atalanta-Midtjyland; there was nothing in it apart from an orange card; he used yellow instead of red. The other two games of 2018 if I am correct, again, there was bad management of incidents; not clear mistakes. The only clear mistake was one penalty against Zurich that did not affect the final result; Red Star-Milan was a difficult game that required a better ref in terms of management; not decision making. And do not forget the important game England-Croatia; he was praised by the English speaker for his soft skills and man management. Sidiropoulos is a very good ref; not as good as some others obviously;but not as bad as presented by many in here. It is good sometimes to remind you the good games of a ref. He was faultless in many champions league games that he was in charge; he had a nightmare in a game that took place 5 years ago and some problems with management-communication with players when the game is too tense. But I watched Vincic in Greece; he had exactly the same issues as Sidiropoulos. Only Makkelie, Kuipers and Stieler were perfect in man management in the heated greek games. I agree with Edward,Brych was bored.

      Delete
    9. Your question about crucial mistakes says only half of the truth. Take a look at Sidiropoulos palmares those 2 years. He had mostly easy/normal difficulty matches and some of them without any influence on the final standings.

I think that it's clear now that the committee has little trust on him and if Vassaras wasn't at the committee, Sidiropoulos would already have been demoted.

      Delete
    3. Due to his injury, UEFA is already preparing Vincic for Euro by appointing him to ko matches.

  7. Only 1 group stage then CL KO, wow! I think Karasev is the luckiest referee in Elite group in last 10 years.

    2. I have watched most of the international referees that Clattenburg has sent to ref the big games in Greece. I am impressed by 2 refs: Peljito and Treimanis. Excellent fitness and control. Very poor performances from Vincic, Marciniak, Kabakov and Nihuis.

      Delete
    3. I agree with Unknown. Pejito and Treimanis were the best referees that came to Greece this year.

I was rather disappointed with Brych (Olympiakos - PAOK). The match was very easy for him but he was definitely bored.

  10. So this basically confirms that Orsato is in charge of Chelsea Atlético.

    1. Appointing him for City - Gladbach wouldn't have had so much sense, if you ask me. This match doesn't require a so expert Elite referee!

      Delete
    2. Chefren do you believe he is the best referee in Europe at the moment?

      Delete
    3. IMO he is not. Orsato is good but I consider Kuipers, Makkelie, Brych and Mateu as (much) better. But maybe thats personal taste as well.

      Delete
  11. Correct decision. Well done mr Bognar.

  12. Lahoz missing in round 16 comes to mind of how Damir Skomina was treated when he was kept away. Lahoz is definitely the front runner for the UCL final this year.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Skomina had 2 R16 matches in that season. Mazic would be the example for a final without previous CL KO stage match in the season.
BTW, the last CL final referee to have a QF in the same year was Howard Webb in 2010 (yes, Clattenburg had a SF, but no QF). So those appointments can really tell something.

I however agree, that Mateu is the frontrunner this year, especially because he is the only candidate with SF experience (and no previous CL final).

    1. 1) Yes. Speed is to high to consider it as no SPA.

      2) Rather correct penalty. We can't assess the exact hand position in the moment of contact but split second later the hand is outstretched.

      3) Yes, SPA but ref most likely couldn't have decided which player had committed the offence.

      1) Looks okay, but probably Not mandatory.

  22. Sorry but... what did Makkelie just do? Did he really whistle the end on a very clear situation for Atalanta?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Well, he whistled immediately before the pass from the midfield. So I would call it a small lack of awareness, but not a big mistake.
Interesting, that there seemed to be no protests by Atalanta - he seems to have quite a high acceptance.

      Delete
    2. Good first half in general and then such an incident. Makkelie was very unlucky though. He whistled when the player controlled the ball in the midfield, only after first of three whistles the pass was made.

      Delete
    3. Indeed he whistled exactly before the pass, he didn't stop the attacker. The time was already over, so one can't discuss about that. he could never realize what was about to happen.
For the rest, expected level with a correct YC for reckless challenge and nothing more.

      Delete
    4. Yes... Let's change the clear lack of any football intelligence of the referee to the irrelevant case that the players of Atalanta are very disciplined... and still somehow make it positive for the referee??? No words..

    5. Yes, I agree with the rest, good first half.

    1. Yep... He didn't stop a clear goalscoring opportunity like somebody else... But of course Kuipers and Makkelie cannot do wrong, right?

      Delete
    3. Ahahaha, you must have a serious issue! There’s nobody here stating that the half time whistle was a brilliant action. Everybody agrees it was not managed optimally. But you’re the only one who can’t stop talking about it and starts the usual polemic.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Correct and well spotted PK by Makkelie.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Now penalty to Real, very difficult to detect whether inside or outside, the decisive contact with right leg was inside. Makkelie took a few for indicating the spot, possible involvement by AR2 in a very good teamwork. YC for genuine DOGSO.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Good decision by Makkelie... and a very stupid action of the defender given who the attacker was.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Karasev had a good or expected first half, was rarely seen but in this second half, he seems to be so unsure of what decision to give and clearly makes or is influenced by the yell of the player who seems to be in pain

    ReplyDelete
  29. Missed foul... and possibly 2nd YC for Nacho?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yeah, game should be stopped and Nacho should get his 2nd YC for a clear stamp on the foot.

      Delete
  30. Well, Makkelie's performance has room for improvement. For me, 2 2nd YC missed for Nacho. Also, he was not as focused as the match required. First, that incident at the end of the first half, when he should have waited to see that there was not an obvious attacking opportunity before whistling. Then, in the second half, in the situation in which Nacho was cautioned, there was an advantage for the attacking team as the defense was not fully formed, and he didn't wait to see if that was an option, he whistled immediately. Correct and difficult to spot penalty with a correct YC.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. What do you think about RC case in the penalty?

      Delete
    2. YC is reasonable for me in this case. I agree with Makkelie.

      Delete
  31. In my opinion it was another solid performance by Makkelie today, he had always the match under control. Regarding first half, I don't think that he can be blamed for having stopped a promising attack because he whistled before. Not big issues, apart from that.
In second half the crucial call was the penalty, I repeat myself, what I wrote in past is valid also for this game: I really like his decision making process. Isolating from the context and taking a decision, facing the big pressure. SPOT ON about the foul inside, YC for genuine DOGSO is in my opinion the standard.
The overall picture is positive, this was the most important thing that committee wanted, I can talk about the Italian point of view and behind such games there is always a special eye on referees, indeed the same had been for Kuipers in Turin.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Italian commentators in last minutes made compliments to Mr Makkelie mentioning “very good refereeing tonight” and talked about “one of the best referees, applying international style”. Not bad to hear from always critical Italian press, especially with Atalanta losing

    ReplyDelete
  33. As atalanta fan I must say Makkelie shoeed IMO a top performance. Penalty was right, all YC correct, always seemed to have full control of the game. Possible second YC to Nacho and that whistle at the end of first half the only things to discuss about. In general much more better than Stieler in the first match, who missed a lot of YC and showed that wrong RC to Freuler and in general seemed to whistle to one side all match long

    ReplyDelete
  34. How was Karasev? Did he do a good/ok job? If yes, I think he has chance to reach the EURO.

    2. i wouldnt say so necessarily. however, i think we can agree that this match and bayern-lazio are the easiest ones in UCL at this stage. the match was over after pretty much 18 minutes when MCI scored the 2:0...after that there were no KMIs and it was just a "management-game". i think for this kind of match every 1st category referee MUST be capable to manage such a really easy match...12 fouls in the entire game...that looks more like a friendly-match to be honest...all in all an ok performance. i didnt understand why on earth he delayed his whistle in a very clear (ove 1meter) offside position in the first half? no trust in his AR1? the flag was absolutely correct as the offside position was so clear and no need to delay. does anyone know if karasev is still injured or so? i didnt see a single propper sprint in the entire game? fair enough there werent too many opportunities, but his running didnt look too enthusiastic IMO. i have read other commentators here who mentioned his lack of fitness too...lets see if we will see him in another round again...

  35. What about the goal off Atalanta. As attacker you’re not allowed to position yourself in the wall. How do we look at this variation on it with 3 players running towards the wall away from the ball.

I know it’s not strict in the rule book but can we interpretate this as the same?

    ReplyDelete

    1. No, that is legal, I think. They are at no time nearer than 1m to the wall.

    2. When the ball is in play they have more than 1m distance to the wall.

  36. Makkelie with a solid performance, not more, but at least that. Minor mistakes, no big thing.
Karasev... no big mistakes, BUT the longer the game proceeded, the more he seemed to loose any self confidence. Bad body language, I saw him much much better... But long time ago. If he would be chosen for Euro, that would be a matter of politics. And from Germany I don't see the consistent good jobs from anyone but Felix Brych. A 2nd ref from Germany at Euro would be a matter of politics, too. I am just sad about Aytekin's injury, so he doesn't get the chance to show his abilities in the knockout phase. He is coming back now in Bundesliga, so I still hope... For me Aytekin is a brilliant ref who suffers still from the match in Madrid. Just unfair, but true.
The idea of taking Frappart to EURO as number 19 for one easy game... That is nothing else than discriminating her!
2 possibilities: She is strong enough to be one of the best 18 refs in Europe, then she should be treated just normally as the others.
OR she is not. Then she should stay at home instead of being nominated just for political reasons. But I am quite sure that she will make a good job. Let's see her at the qualifier...
