So Rosetti decides to appoint a very good ref in Paris, despite an important 4-1 in the 1st leg. Seen the facts that happened with Aytekin, I think is a good choice.

DeleteInteresting to see Anthony Taylor on PSG vs Barcelona considering he is one of the top refs and i was expecting him to get a higher profile match and not a match that is pretty much over. Happy to see Turpin but was expecting him to get a bigger match like Sevilla vs Dortmund or Atletico vs Chelsea. Wouldn't be suprised if Michael Oliver is given a game next week or a Europa League tomorrow depending on travel restrictions and so on
ReplyDeleteI suppose they wanted to avoid risk given the last time these teams met, which was also seemingly done after 1st leg. Also, Taylor was originally appointed for 1st leg but was replaced by Kuipers so it makes sense to re-appoint him. I imagine we will see more of Taylor later in CL and EL, as long as travel restrictions allow.

Is Taylor well ahead of Oliver in the eyes of UEFA? In England it seems the other way that Oliver is still in front!
ReplyDeleteI’m from England, and I can honestly tell you that Taylor is a very good referee, but nowhere near Oliver.
DeleteI watch them both on a regular basis and Oliver hardly ever makes mistakes but Taylor got away with a lot of very high profile mistakes last season! It doesn’t make sense, Collina didn’t even appoint Taylor to a high profile game let alone KO but appointed Oliver to a champions league quarter final despite him only being 33 at the time! So it is clear who is the better referee!
I am beginning to think Taylor has some sort of leverage over Rosetti now 😭
Taylor's performances in Europe have been very good, his style fits better there than in his home country, honestly...
DeleteIn the Premier League, Oliver is heads and tails above Taylor – Oliver's style is perfectly suited to the PL and he simply excels. Taylor is in general good, and this season has actually been quite excellent, but has been very prone to making big incorrect decisions in big matches.
DeleteTaylor's style is perfect for European football, IMO. Whenever I've watched Oliver in Europe he just doesn't have as good a grip on most matches as he does in England. Taylor just fits right in, though.

Delete@Furqan It’s no secret that English refereeing is a bit different from the rest of Europe, especially when compared with what UEFA expects in international matches. Most notably, Premier League is more physical, and the players generally expect more lenient refereeing. I think the relationship between players and the referee is different, too. For example, English footballing culture prides itself on trying to be more honest than in other places; they don’t try to con the referee as much.
DeleteThis all leads to most PL referees being, in general, less mobile, less aggressive/intense, more lenient, and more personable than a typical UEFA referee. It is a very “old school” kind of style that isn’t really suited for the modern international game where the players know that they have a job to do and will go to any lengths to get that job done.
I don’t watch too much PL myself, but I hear that Taylor is one of the stricter referees there. Oliver is quieter and more personable. Oliver is more of that “old school” type that is more suited for the Premier League, while Taylor is a more modern, more technical referee, more suited for UEFA’s rather unlenient expectations.

ReplyDeleteFor the last 4 R16 matches, the obvious names would be Hategan (if allowed), Mateu, Oliver and Orsato.
ReplyDeleteOliver is only possible in Munich (due to Real-Juve), so by further deduction of possibilities, this would mean Mateu has to get the match in Manchester and Orsato in Chelsea, which would leave Hategan for Madrid.
This should be the only variant to appoint all four of them.
Orsato for CHE-ATL makes a lot of sense to me.
BAY-LAZ is not that exciting, so could also be a chance for a further KO stage debut (Kovacs?) instead of Oliver.
Mateu had some history with Guardiola IIRC and the pairing is not that open anymore. However it's also hard to find an alternative for this match.
If Hategan is not available for RMA-ATL, probably a referee from the first legs needs to be appointed again, e.g. Makkelie.

DeleteI don't know anything that can be deemed as official, however beased on observation of his recent appointment as fourth official of Kovacs in Europa League, I would dare to say that there aren't problem for committee in appointing hiim, but the "problem" is Sovre, still under investigation (?) by UEFA. How long this will last I don't know, so it depends on that. I also think that UEFA could maybe suggest to committee to avoid the Romanian appointment as main referee at least for this KO stage, for opportunity questions. I know that this is very hard for Hategan... but... things seem to be only unclear. Maybe an appointment for him in Europa League with another assistant referee replacing Sovre? We will know soon. I have the feeling he would have already got a game in the middle in case of "freedom" in appointing him.
Regarding the reast of my predictions, I didn't know about Karasev and English teams, that's something new for me. However, there are only a few opportunity for this game between City and Gladbach, and in my opinion it doesn't require a "high" Elite referee, so surprises are possible. I selected Karasev to give at least a signal if committee has planned to see him at EURO. Another name is Sidiropoulos, but personally I really don't like him. For Real - Atalanta committee would never appoint Oliver, this is absolutely impossible. Given that Kuipers was sent to Turin after the controversial decision in the end of Porto - Juventus (that's my opinion, I can't find other arguments to see him in such game), the same could be for Real - Atalanta after the criticisms against Stieler, so Makkelie, another high ranked Elite referee, would be the logical choice by Rosetti, who seems to work in this direction in recent years, especially after complaints.
Then, Chelsea - Atlético, should be very likely Orsato, never appointed so far.
We will see tomorrow EL appointments and we will maybe have already some answers.

Well, it is not a referee committee of the RFU. It is an experts panel. If you (a club) would like to complain about this or that referee’s performance you apply to this panel. Today it consists of both Russian and foreign experts – Levnikov, Baskakov, Zuev (UEFA referee observers), Fursa (ex FIFA linesman), De Bleeckere, Stark, Kassai, Snoddy. Their opinion is kind of a final one. Besides Elleray acts as an advisor and gives his opinion on VAR performance.

A resistance to Article 14 (the laws on the control and ethics of behavior) of the United Football Union (UEFA) is not established.
Assistant Referee Octavian Sovre has not been banned, both have to take part in a training program on the subject by the summer.

ReplyDeleteCompletely disagree with this OFR and the penalty awarded. This is nothing more than a coincidental contact, defender makes no extra movement towards attacker and there was no chance whatsoever that the attacker could have challenged for the ball.

Foul is a foul, intention is not needed. Treading on someone's foot is so evident that you can't ignore it. YC is not ridiculous as stamp is always reckless in UEFA (and in 99,9% national federations).

DeleteFor me this should not be considered a foul. It seems every contact, no matter intensity nor intent, is considered a foul nowadays in UEFA football. And making no differentiation between a truly reckless stamp and a totally unintentional touching the foot simply makes no sense for me.
DeleteIt's a so-called dogmatic refereeing that makes easier both the job of referees and media reception (if explained well to 'experts' and 'fans'). It also helps in avoiding different, subjective judgments from referees themselves.
DeleteYes, I understand your point of view and probably this is how UEFA instructed their refs but IMO the consequence of this totally unintentional event results in an out-of-proportion punishment. A situation in which there’s 0% chance to score a goal is promoted to an almost certain goal.

Then, in case, in front of monitor, Taylor could have decided for playing on, but this latter solution when there is VAR in action is somehow very difficul to see as final outcome.

Well, Verratti did gain a real advantage as he clearly entered the circle before the penalty was taken, and after that cleared the ball.
DeleteI’m lost, punishing an unintentional and minimal stepping on the foot where no advantage was gained for the defending team with a penalty, but not enforcing the laws when a defender encroaches and really gains an advantage being able to clear the rebound of the penalty.
Correct 2nd penalty but I think that should have been Kurzawa's second yellow card for a reckless challenge. Apart from that, I really like Taylor's management style. He seems so relaxed and yet so in control.

ReplyDeleteNot much to report from Turpin's game. Maybe I am influenced by the UEFA documentary and him running around those cones, but he certainly has my envy with how nimble he is moving around the FoP, changing direction.

With the amount of appeals Taylor is (rightly) waving away, it makes me wonder if these players are just hoping for a foul or whether they actually get awarded free kicks for these incidents in domestic games!
ReplyDeleteI more often than not criticize referees but it was an absolute masterclass by Anthony Taylor tonight. In a much more difficult game IMO than the one in Torino yesterday he was absolutely faultless. Pure joy to watch. It reminded me why I decided to become a referee myself..

DeleteVerratti encroached at the penalty kick missed by Messi and then played the ball. Did the VAR only check whether Navas had at least a foot on the line, but not Verratti's clear encroachment?
ReplyDeleteNot sure why VAR stayed away, but an intervention was mandatory here. Verratti clearly got involved by playing the ball after his encroachment, so there’s little to discuss. The check took long enough to recognize the encroachment.

I Finally Got Helped !! I'm so excited right now, I just have to share my testimony on this Forum.. The feeling of being loved takes away so much burden from our shoulders.
