  1. It's really funny, the committee is really working for Italian, Spanish, Dutch and Slovenian referees, it's really funny after the Rangers v Dortmund game, by the way I love the lahoz, I'm just saying it for the appointments made

  2. Two logical appointments, I think.
Mateu in a sonourous match, but with a two goal lead for the home team.
Turpin in a match with a clear favourite, but an equal standing from the first leg.
It's hard to say, which is the bigger appointment and both referees would also have been available for the parallel game. So one could speculate, whether there are special reasons, why the assignments were done this way or whether there is not much behind it.

    1. Of I have to speculate about a reason:
Two referees, two very different styles.

Mateu Lahoz’ style works better with south-European teams. Liverpool has a few troublemakers as well. Mateu is the better player-manager. Turpin’s style works very well with German teams.

  3. So, committee thinks Bayern München - Salzburg is a very open tie.
A very big name is appointed there, this surely puts in a different light the first-leg appointment for Oliver. My personal opinion is that we could see a totally different game than first leg, without a real challenge for Turpin, but let's see.
Mateu Lahoz in Liverpool: after Gil Manzano in Chelsea - Lille with Rosetti he is the second Spanish referee in this phase of competition. It is difficult to think that Del Cerro will get another game, in case in my opinion he would be suitable only for Ajax - Benfica, being out from all the rest, but maybe in that case too many Spanish appointments... this assignment of Mateu Lahoz can be the signal of a new trust by committe. Regarding WC selection it will be extremely interesting to see the choices, as we discussed.
Also, in my opinion easy to understand why De Burgos will work as fourth official and not as VAR, after Rangers - Borussia Dortmund.

    1. Indeed, only one option left for del Cerro Grande, but I think, it's more likely than not, that he gets Ajax-Benfica.
If not, this would be really a bad sign for him regarding the WC and one could think, that Gil Manzano is in front of him.

You could be right regarding de Burgos, but I think, Martinez could have been the first choice anyway, as he and Hernandez seem to be the top 2 Spanish VARs - de Burgos has clearly less appointments in CL.

    2. I hope CDCG Will stay without a CL match then. Ajax Benfica IMO is too big of a match for him in his current UEFA form. Maybe he is better in Spain but in europe i find him a disaster

  4. Lahoz in my opinion deserved to sit this one out after the absolute shocker of a decision in Rangers-Dortmund but no give him the biggest match of the day in the CL.

    1. I'm reading many comments on social media about that as well, but let's clarify that the one to blame for the VAR intervention is De Burgos, it is always difficult for a referee to stay with his initial call. The rest of the game had been good for him, I think.

      Delete
    2. But he didn't have to change the OFD.

      Delete
    3. We need to see more referees stick with the OFD for sure!

  5. Interesting fact: Mateu has only refereed Inter once and this was 9 years ago and also in England: A 3-0 loss to Tottenham in EL R16. (Inter then won the second leg 4-1 aet with Ivan Bebek.)

    1. Mateu Lahoz started to officiate in CL group stage in 2012/13 season, then you must consider that Inter last participation before a long absence was the year before, 2011-12. Then, since the first season in which they returned in major competition (2018-19) there was always a Spanish team in their group and most of times they were eliminated before KO stage, so it was impossible to see Mateu in their games.

  6. Brisard seems to be the No1 French VAR now, although only Delajod and Millot were on the list for the FIFA seminar. Will be interesting, who ends up at the WC out of those three.

  7. Refereeing highlights of Bastian Dankert's performance [VAR: Dingert] in Al-Ittihad vs. Damac, played on Thursday in Saudi Arabia. A very sizeable chuck of the HL are taken by the crazy end to the game, with a penalty given after intervention and a mad confrontation leading to two red cards.

  8. Which referees do you expect in the Champions League and Europa League matches to be played on Wednesday?

    ReplyDelete

    1. There are some predictions in the previous topic.

  9. For tomorrow I think we can expect:

    Real Madrid - PSG
Makkelie or Taylor 50% - 50%, here definitely no clues for a preference between them.

    Manchester City - Sporting
Umult Meler or Massa, in particular the appointment of Turpin for Bayern - Salzburg makes me think about the policy of these assignments, the fact that some referees are about to get their first game in CL KO stage is a very important criterion and maybe this can allow the chance of an even more experienced referee, I guess that both are possible, but I would prefer Massa for this reason, with Umut Meler maybe in a big game in Europa League. One thing is sure, we will see a new Elite here.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think Rosetti will choose Taylor if he can do it now. So Makkelie will remain available for a possible next stage match of the winner against an English team.

      Delete
    2. Sandro Schärer is only appointed as VAR in Swiss Super League this weekend. So, I make a guess that he will get his CL-Knockout debut in Manchester.

      Delete
    3. I hope rosetti Will choose Scharer for man city sporting. UEFA needs a good swiss ref (or at least a ref from another country) more than a mediocre Italian one.

      Delete
    4. Where is Artur Dias or Cakir? Are they really inferior than Massa or Guida?

      Delete
  10. Real Madrid vs PSG Danny makkelie
    M.city-sporting-Sandro scharer or Umut Meler
    Porto-lyon-Davide massa
    betis-frankfurt-srdan jovanovic
    My guesses are like this

  11. On the horrifying situation in Mexico, I hope Fernando Guerrero (the referee for that match) is doing alright, it must be a very traumatic moment for him. More generally, I can't imagine what the referees in that league are thinking right now - how confident can they be in their own security at a match when such violence can happen with little to no police anywhere to be seen? Tragic situation all around, hopefully nothing like this happens again for a very long time.

    ReplyDelete
  12. OT I think big mistake from Srdjan Jovanovic as VAR ref in very important match in Serbian championship Spartak-Partizan. For me never VAR stuff, moreover this cannot be a penalty. Lot of protests immediately after this match from Red Star, calling this a robbery! The penalty came in 84-85 minute and goal for 0-1 was scored. This can be the goal to decide title winner.

    1. To me indeed it is not VAR stuff, VAR shouldn't have intervened, there isn't an objective criterion to say that this was a 100% penalty.

    2. The defender did not get the ball (or negligable) and he trips the attacker (knee high contact). For me correct VARint, what speaks against a PK?

Referee team: Nathan Verboomen - Mathias Hillaert, Ruben Wyns - Simon Bourdeaud'hui
VAR team: Bram Van Driessche, Koen Thijs

    1. A penalty phase that was not given by the referee, VAR does not intervene either.

    1. 19': excellent work by VAR for me, minimum contact (as I think the commentator said as well, for what I can understand), and not sure how much player wanted to deceive referee penalty. Fully grey area: to me all three possible decisions of simulation, play on and penalty must be supported by VAR.

76' clear contact that turns in a step on foot, best image you can find by stopping video in 00:22, correct decision, was the player booked after the OFR?

  14. Well, I didn’t expect Turpin here because he officiated a German team recently (Dortmund), however in my opinion this is a sensible appointment for Turpin.

I read some comments above that committee ‘needs’ a big game in Munich. I slightly disagree.

Turpin had a very very tough match in his last Champions League game >> MD6 (POR-ATM) in which he lost control. Let me be clear: almost all referees would have struggled in that match. But I don’t think that Committee already forgot that game. We know that losing control is a bad thing in terms of ratings, according to the ranking scale. I think Bayern-Salzburg is the perfect game to ‘recover’.

Bayern-Salzburg could be a very intense and tight match, but it is certainly not a high profile game or two clubs that are expected to play dirty or to have unsportive behaviour or outbursts.
Therefore, in opinion a sensible appointment to recover.

I also like the appointment of Lahoz in Liverpool. He is a ‘managing’ referee who interacts a lot with players, like Marciniak and that worked really well in the 1st leg.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Oliver superb in the first half of the Manchester Derby!

  16. Interesting appointments.

I remember we discussed referees and their styles a few months ago. For example:
Style 1: proactive referees that are interact a lot with players. Style 2: referees that are a bit more distanced/isolated and reactive.

I think the Ref committee obviously takes that into account when making the appointments? The fact that both Marciniak and Mateu (similar styles) are appointed to Inter vs Liverpool confirms that for me. Apparantly committee thinks that this is a type of game with some players (hot potatoes) on the pitch that requires the more ‘interacting ref’ (style 1) to keep players and benches calm.

Very interesting penalty call in Elche - Barcelona, VAR sees a deliberate movement by elbow to put away ball, despite of an apparent natural position of the arm during the whole action. I must say, an excellent spot and I agree with this call.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes, that movement makes it clearly punishable.
The only doubt is, whether Depay also touches the ball with his arm (in an unnatural position) before the punishable contact by the defender - but probably not.

    2. There seemed to have been a handball situation in the Barca box as well. Anybody knows what minute?

    3. This is the trend of modern football, "show must go on".
My opinion is here, in occasion of a similar incident occurred in a UEFA GAME some years ago:
      http://law5-theref.blogspot.com/2018/08/swedish-assistant-referee-fredrik.html
I think we can't accept that, in past you would have never allowed a game to continue, now it is totally different and football is rather a business.

      Delete
    4. I can't believe he continued the match, despite the fact that the spectators from the stands hit his colleague and despite the fact that he warned them again. It’s a shame he just didn’t go to the locker room with his colleagues. I have no words. I would never go on, even if it was a world cup final match!

  20. I am very happy for Lahoz. I hope the referee gets his chance. There's something I'm wondering Will Cakir not take part in the remaining matches? I think the committee should give him one last chance. Because Cakir deserves it. I hope Lahoz and Cakir take part in the world cup.

      Delete
    2. Milan-Atletico also managed very well, without mistakes, I think if there was a mistake VAR referee Bitigen would have won very different matches, without the referee, without the Italian team, he is being treated badly. Because of Rosetti and his committee. And don't stop talking about political reasons, this is football. We don't care what you say, do you think the political reason is Turkish?

      Delete
    3. Managed well, but the penalty at the end ruined the game. Certainly the VAR did not help

      Delete
    4. I don't know, it was really good for me, there are mistakes in football, makkelie made a mistake in Serbia-Portugal because of his assistant, the assistant left, makkelie continues, if you are looking for a problem-free referee, you are wrong

      Delete
    5. I say it as a mistake, even if it is different, the mistake they made, no matter who made it.

      Delete
    6. For sure, politics play a big role. We already knew that and has been discussed multiple times on this blog. Some referees are backed by committee when they make a mistake, others are not. Even when they are from a big football country (f.e. Stieler).

    8. ı am talking about Cakir ofcourse lol. Most probably City game will be the last international appointment for Bitigen.

      Delete
    9. In fact, only the committee has announced this now, Çakır has been in separate matches from his assistants for 2 weeks, and Bitigen has directed the match in the 2nd league last week, he was not in the super league for a long time, palabıyık could not win many matches, it was just the announcement that created an earthquake effect, but in reality, these people played the long-awaited matches and he couldn't win games in the super league, but believe me, everything can still change, I wouldn't be surprised if someone says we made a joke

    10. This just further weakens Cakir chances of going to the World Cup or even gaining trust in the eyes UEFA ref comm first of all… I hope he hasn’t officiated his last international game!!! A referee of his caliber deserves the absolute best I. Terms of send forth because he was a very wonderful servant even if he declined a little bit(politics involved).

How UEFA (best performance at EURO 2020 after which he was sent home instead of getting the final) and now even his domestic federation treat him is unbelievable. 25. I have never seen something like that in my entire life.

A referee lost within 3 years all his credibility and is treated like nothing!
This should not happen to no referees!

May I give you a short anaylsis of the last three years:
First of all we should remember that Çakir is Süper Lig referee since 2001.
He always had a high reputition internationally.

    Two clarify two points:
    1. He was internationally very high and was used in many big Turkish derbies. But in general he was better international than rather in Turkey. But we have seen that with many referees like Brych... so for my quite normal.

    2. His father was a former referee in Turkey and was member of the Committee. It should be no mystery that if you have contact through your father you have a better basis to start like other refs. All other things on social media are speculation and Turkish news reporting sometimes very strange things...

Now speaking about his performance (and that should count the most!), he had an excellent start of 2019. He refereed CL QL & SF (epic Barcelona-Liverpool).

In the summer he was main candidate for UEFA Super Cup in his hometown Istanbul. As we know Çakir was the first person to be informed of Frappart's appointment. That time he had an excellent relationship with Roberto Rosetti.

Then he became Slovenia-Austria and THAT GAME CHANGED HIS WHOLE CAREER!
He MISSED A CLEAR RC and this was his mistake. He rejected two handball appeals for Sloevnia but perfeclty right!
Slovenia had no more chance to qualify for EURO 2020. He got a bad grad for that match.
A few days later he was assigned for BVB-Inter in UCL but (as we know!) Çeferin delegated the match to Makkelie.

After that decision HIS TREATMENT & HIMSELF CHANGED! He became more anxious, had no clear line in his game and big problems with VAR communication.

He was selected to EURO 2020 (for me a surprise) and was THE BEST referee of the tournament. You know the story and the treatment by UEFA, Çeferin with London-Istanbul so I don't need to repeat the story.

Now he need to stop in Süper Lig, has no chance for UCL/UEL and quite no chance for WC.

He achieved everything but I just want to say he is just an extremely sympathic referee who saved UEFA for years in many games.
But I repeat that should not happen to no refs.

So I hope Çakir will come one time to the field, do his last game and can end his amazing career in peace and respect!

    1. I think Cakir's case is illustrative of how precarious and challenging refereeing is in general. I based my refereeing on Cakir's excellent foul detection, but it seems that the more lenient style of Byrch is more in style now. Even one large error in a big match will cost you, and Cakir may have had several. I remember not calling a PK against Messi in one match and then the more recent mistake in CL with the Italian team, so perhaps one benefit of Byrch's more lenient approach is less calls means less chances for mistakes. Just a thought.

  26. My respect, Çakir. A brilliant referee

  27. Turkish football commentator Rıdvan Dilmen said that he called Çakir and said that he did not know about it, that he learned on TV. Çakır said that the news in Saudi Arabia was completely unfounded.

  30. 2nd Lewandowski PK call: gets hit in back of knee, and then reacts a half second later, falling down dramatically. Very strange OFR PK call.

    1. One can indeed wonder whether enough stuff for VAR.
      Video:
      https://streamff.com/v/e5a0fd
Lewandowski made a theatrical fall to get the foul, I agree, this is clear.

      Delete
    2. In 23. there seemed to be a defensive handball went unpunished just outside the Bayern box, after which the Bavarians scored the 3rd goal in the counterattack. No conclusive replays so far.

      Delete
    3. Thanks for the clip, Chefren, which provided a differen angle than in the broadcast I'm watching. The defensive player does seem to go through Lewandowski's leg, but he is still able to plant it fine after getting hit, and then perhaps there is contact in the back of the knee, but I would say the theatrical fall might make one doubt the severity of the contact and thus preclude the PK call.

      Delete
    4. Turpin gave a free kick. So VAR had only to check, whether the contact happened inside the penalty area. And then of course, whether giving a foul is a clear error.
Was there really an OFR in this scene? Should be a factual decision taken by the VAR, I think.

      Delete
    5. There was no OFR

      Delete
    6. The kick is so blatant that I wouldn't accept no penalty here. In case of play-on call, intervention required even though the fall was exaggerated, I think.

      Delete
    7. Absolutely correct work by VAR then! I wasn't watching the game, I thought it had been given after OFR. If Turpin whistled free kick, the foul decision is correctly his responsibility.

      @Euro Soccer Ref
I must admit I'm really in trouble when I see such behavior by players, but indeed you are right, one must always look at the facts and nothing more.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I was right about Turpin game, committee could have made a different choice, but impossible to know before.
Now the first YC in Mateu Lahoz game, a correct one for reckless challenge after an advantage (he then whistled a subsequent foul).

    ReplyDelete
  34. I expect a VAR intervention in Liverpool for serious foul play.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Leg was bent and the intensity of the contact was low. The height of the challenge and mode of contact (studs) are components of red, but just not enough for an OFR intervention, I thought.

That said, did Mateu not even give the yellow when play stopped?

      Delete
    2. Did Sanchez get YC? I missed it. Very, very close to RC. Perhaps no VAR because not enough force of contact, but exposed studs hitting just under knee was potentially dangerous and could have warranted RC.

      Delete
    3. No YC!?! Very, very unusual.

      Delete
    4. Not great management of the final minutes by Lahoz, also a foul missed immediately after Sanchez's foul. IMO not mandatory RC, but, if I'm not wrong, not even a YC given by the Spanish ref

      Delete
    5. Big mistake from Munuera to jot invite Mateu, very much RC stuff.

      Delete
    6. For me it is a red card but to be honest, given what we’ve seen recently I’m not so surprised at the lack of review here. Intensity was low, despite the terrible mode and point of contact. Sanchez is very lucky.

      Delete
    7. Yes the player was booked! No card was impossible to accept there.
However, it seems as in this KO stage guidelines for intervening for SFP by VAR are really high, let's remember Villarreal - Juventus, they are backing all pitch decisions!

      Delete
    8. When watching replay I immediately said it won't be enough for intervention in UEFA because the force was not high and the nature of contact not severe enough (more like a touch).

      Delete
    9. @icedteatower according to UEFA, player has been booked.

      Delete
    10. But what is the important difference between the foul in Villarreal-Juventus (Siebert) and this (high) studs-on-shin foul? In VIL-JUV there was “only” a sliding contact as well.
Important to recognize, Uefa deemed the YC in Villarreal-Juventus as a wrong decision (SFP instead of reckless) and OFR required.

      Delete
    11. UEFA app is now showing a yellow was given, as Chefren points out above. It was just not caught on the live feed.

And I don't think this is really an issue of standards being higher in the UEFA KO stages. There were elements of the challenge that point to red card (mode of contact, location of contact, distance from ball) while there were elements that point to yellow card (intensity of challenge, speed of challenge, bent leg to mitigate force). In every competition I know of using VAR, if there are several elements to justify a yellow, you're not supposed to recommend an OFR for red card. The evidence for red card must be overwhelming ("clear and obvious"). The debate we are having here shows that it is not clear and obvious. In other words, ultimately well done from both Mateu and Munuera here.

  35. A old Turkish referee (Ahmet Cakar) said that UEFA will give Cakir a match next week. If such a match was given, what will happen now? Will the given match be taken back? Maybe FIFA will give him an appointment in the world cup. In addition, Ref545 evaluated the last three years of cakir as very good. The fact that Ceferin intervened in the events disrupted the balance of CAKIR. I don't think he deserved such a bad ending. I hope his career doesn't end like this

      1. Taylor
      2. Lahoz
      3. Turpin
      4. Siebert
      5. Makkelie
      6. Orsato
      7. Vincic
      8. Hategan
      9. Marciniak
      10. Soares Dias

    2. Cüneyt Çakır has a Champions League match next week. In addition, he received an invitation by FIFA for fitness tests, which will be held for the World Cup 15 days later. So it doesn't seem like a normal situation in any way. I expect the referees who are not on the list to protest the decision by not going to the matches.

    4. But I doubt, if Mateu Lahoz us sent to Qatar instead of Gil Manzano, the Spanish federation seems to have big influence and Gil Manzano being the UEFA ref in Conmebol tournament last time was a clear sign - like it was for Rapallini being part of tge European Championship...

    5. And I think Jovanovic is, already ahead of Soares Dias.

  36. Clear second YC by Mateu Lahoz. Reckless challenge, after having touched ball before, but no matter.

    3. Same issue with the English commentators. Clear, clear yellow card.

    4. And now they recommended watching LaLiga, because Mateu always provides entertainment...

However with slow-motion knowledge, there actually wasn't much contact. Together with clearly playing the ball first, I would not call it a clear YC.
Surely supportable, but maybe there was some room for a final warning.
On the other hand, the first YC obviously was close to Red, so maybe he also had that in mind.

  38. At about 3 minutes into extra time, wrong call on Inter player for foul or high boot that was fair challenge and then YC for dissension, and then missed foul on Salah after that and losing control a little.

    1. Apart from missed BLATANT foul on Salah in front of AR1 in 93:20 it was Mateu Lahoz as we know him - brilliant communication with players, friendly talk with Klopp, hugs with always problematic Vidal. Mateu Lahoz along with Marciniak are masters of dealing with key players / trouble makers. I can't imagine WC2022 without Mateu Lahoz even more taking into account long lasting del Cerro's weak form. UEFA did all to promote the latter and, after his first excellent seasons in elite and Spanish tradition to send different referees to each WC, it was quite understandable but I think now we all can see who should be in Qatar.

    2. I agree Lahoz deserves a spot in Qatar, but I also worry that his style might not be well-suited to football outside of Europe. In many regions of the world, it is impossible for a referee to simply talk his way through problems.

    3. We will see Gil Manzano in Qatar. Spain will not change their tradition of not repeating their WC referee.

    4. @ Smala: what regions outside Europe do you mean?

I think his managing style could actually work with South-American teams.

    1. But Čeferin & Rosetti don't like it and you can see what they can do if they don't like certain referees (Çakır).

    2. What’s the agenda against Cakir? He is one of the best fifa referees ever.
P.S Lahoz can’t be that hated otherwise he wouldn’t be getting such appointments like tonight and champions league final.

    3. Do you remember how Çakir (and Mateu Lahoz too) were treated at EURO?

Mateu Lahoz was a clear favourite season before he got his CL final appointment. It was also a great opportunity to use him. Surprisingly UEFA waited and then was forced to appoint him because it was another CL final without Spanish team and there were no strong candidates at that time.

  43. I don't write much on here but I thought I'd put a few of my thoughts about Lahoz's match. Note I preface this as a Liverpool supporter, I try to be objective, but I know it can be hard.

I thought it was a mixed performance for Lahoz. Seemed to struggle in terms of foul detection. Some weak calls on Fabinho early, and again in stoppage time there was imo an incorrect IFK to LFC, followed my a missed foul on Salah.

In terms of the big calls. I felt it should've been a RC live in the 1H. However the intensity is low despite the high contact point so I understand no OFR. Likewise if RC was given I would expect it to stay. The 2YC seemed correct to me.

What I liked about this match, and admire about Lahoz in general in his huge man management skills. Having mixed foul selection in a game like that can often be the end for a lot of referees, yet he was able to still have the respect of the players, and in particular people like Vidal and Henderson throughout.

Hard to predict how far he will go in the UCL this season, and Qatar but he certainly is still a class referee who handles big scenarios like tonight well.

    1. I should also add that both assistants had a great evening. Quite a lot of offside decisions, and also often decisions were given quickly even when slightly closer than normal to be given immediately given VAR. Added to the flow of the match very well!

  44. Congratulations Mr. Lahoz! I am impressed!

  45. Indeed Lahoz' style works very well with complicated teams, troublemakers, etc. Same aplies to Marciniak.

Committee made the well-considered choice to appoint both referees on this specific match.

  46. I agree that it was a very good performance by Mateu Lahoz yesterday and even if you want to consider the possible red card as crucial mistake for him, looking at the rest, you come to conclusion that he has surely done an excellent job in terms of control of game, in a quite challenging context. The very important thing is that players always accept his decisions, he interacts with them by using his particular style, something that Del Cerro was never able to do. Of course the latter has a different character and he can't change it, but in my opinion the level of being in the game, and taking the control of it was never close to Mateu. One can also exclude the decisions making process that comes later, if you ask me. Also, Mateu can be in trouble and can take wrong decisions, but at least he shows players to be convinced about what he is doing...
FIFA can have different ideas but I wouldn't have doubts about the choice for Spanish 2022 WC referee.

    1. About the Italian commentators, inded everything has been accepted without discussions, but the red card for Sanchez was clear, given also the first foul, so it would have been impossible to make criticisms and in this case there isn't any special skill by referee to convince the demanding Italian audience about refereeing :)
