What do you think, which referees will participate in the European Championship in the summer? Probably 12 referees will be needed.
ReplyDeleteFor me Staubli, Frappart, Hussein, Lehtovaara, Huerta de Aza, Martincic, Adamkova, Persson and Welch should be safe. But there are many possible candidates.

Pustovoytova will probably not be able to participate.

Kulcsar's last international match is nearly a year ago, so quite doubtful, whether she will attend the EURO. Also Pustovoytova seems impossible at the moment.
What is going on with Kulcsar? Her missing from international matches for almost a year is unusual. Anyone from Hungary knows whether she is injured, ill or pregnant?

It does not have to be deliberate. There is contact between the arm and the ball immediately before the goal was scored.
DeleteMin. 77: same as Oliver last week, Staubli stopped play for a foul against the Bayern goalkeeper one second before the ball entered the goal, so VAR could not intervene in case there is an issue. Both Oliver and Staubli are elite referees. Is UEFA not instructing them to wait one extra second, just in case?
ReplyDeleteThe goalkeeper was clearly in control of the ball, you could argue that this offence was quite blatant (certainly compared with last week's)
DeleteYes, it was, but it only takes one second to wait, same as with offside - that is the whole idea behind VAR having a chance to correct it, in case simething goes wrong on the field. If the referee blows the whistle too quickly, the potential opportunity for correction is gone. If we a referee can wait 2-3 seconds for advantage, why not in these situations, especially with VAR?
DeleteThere is a clear upside of whistling immediately: players know that the referee is certain and that the decision can not be overturned. So if the foul is blatant, it's counterproductive to delay the call.

Yes, is it.
DeleteIn CL 2018/19 Mateu Lahoz (ESP) officiated Liverpool Porto (QF, first leg), Liverpool won and met Barcelona in SF.
This year it could happens again with the almost sure Taylor’s appointment for VIL-BAY (connected to LIV-BEN) or/and for a Spanish ref (Del Cerro/Manzano)in LIV-BEN

DeleteI was wondering on how it is possible to be appointed as assistant ref for a UWCL quarterfinal after failing two consecutive fitness tests in Austria(as normally this is a reason to be taken from the national list in AT)...
ReplyDeleteDid she fail men's or women's fitness test? If a woman referee tries and fails men's test, but passes the women's test, she is allowed to referee women's matches, but not men's matches. If she failed women's test, she should not be appointed until she re-takes and passes it.

ReplyDeleteFurthermore the allocation of the teams from the play-offs means that there is no problem in using e.g. Makkelie and del Cerro Grande for the UEFA play-offs (but no English referee), Faghani for CRC-NZL (but not Mateu, Siebert or Sato) and Mateu for AFC-PER (but not Turpin).

If they publicly posted the name of their own candidate, it cannot be confidential. National FAs have the choice whether to release the info. Maybe other FAs will do it in the next days.

ReplyDeleteI’m already curious who will be in charge of the hot (dirty) clashes at the WC, between South American teams (or for example Ecuador-Portugal). IMO the appointments that tell us the most about trust. Teams that put a lot pressure on a referee, and want to control the referee instead of the other way around.
ReplyDeleteMy guess: the UEFA refs that are often used in hot clashes, and well-known for their match control / player management, like Marciniak, Mateu Lahoz (if selected), Makkelie and Orsato. And outside Europe, Faghani, of course…
Appointment news from German Elite referees:
ReplyDeleteAytekin seems to be replaced today after just coming back in a friendly international.
Siebert has a 1. Bundesliga match today.
Stieler makes his comeback in 3. Liga (after injury).
Zwayer works as VAR this weekend.
Summary: Siebert and Zwayer could work any day next week, for the other two a further international appointment this season seems unlikely.
I just checked the 1-2 by Bayern scored with elbow, clear touch, arm close to body but still punishable because goal directly scored .
ReplyDeleteVery difficult case for VAR, but he should have spotted that.
It is very rare that last touch before goal is a deflection (by arm - elbow) and not an "isolated" attempt to score by that. This made it quite hard to see for Fedayi San. In addition, I think this was clear only in the replay in 56:00, indeed, and it wasn't checked at all because VAR couldn't expect that. These are the situations based on which you can judge how much good is a VAR (check always everything, always expect the unexpected).
More generally, so far the committee has ensured VAR in this stage of the competition, but without making particular choices, in the meaning that we didn't see all trusted name. Rather, it looks like the principle was to have VAR but so far no more than that.
In addition to referees selection for this summer's EURO, it will be interesting to know which VAR will be selected for the competition.
I would bet top names. We can also conclude that nowadays in UEFA refereeing we have many different degrees of appointments, based on the importance of the games. And we are right if we state that there is indeed a pool of very trusted VARs, but of course they can make mistakes as well. Basically, I think this can (mostly) depend on how much VAR developed in the country of the referee involved.
One could also say, that the VAR task is more difficult in women's football, because there are less protests.
DeleteIn men's football you can be quite sure, that there are complaints in some form, when there is a controversial or clearly wrong decision, while the referee decisions are more often accepted by the women players.
Of course only as a general observation, there surely are exemptions in both directions.
E.g., if one of the defenders would have claimed handball in Paris, it would have been more likely, that the VAR checked it. And I could imagine, that a male player might have done that, even if he saw only a small chance that there was a handball.
About the EURO, I am not sure: Could be, that we see the top VARs there. But I could also imagine, that it will be the second row, i.e. the best, who won't go to Qatar. And that could indeed include those, who worked in the CL QF.

IMO this is var "beginner stuff". checking whether a goal is correct or not...with simple yes/no questions mostly anyone on this blog should be able to detect that this goal is scored incorrectly...
Yes, it is indeed basic stuff for VAR: goal scored directly by arm. Same as in the CWC final last year, so all VAR should have learned to automatically check that.
DeleteOf course I didn't want to justify the mistake, I just always like to explain why it happens. And it is indeed more difficult to be concentrated when even players don't notice that. But the mistake is very clear and of course terrible for a VAR, more than a crucial one!
