Interesting choice about the fourth official in Hategan's team, there are almost all Romanian FIFA referees busy, the match will be played in France and so I think this could be a specific input by committee, to appoint a fourth official from another country. He is coming with the VAR officials. Guida will work as AVAR, one could have expected the contrary, given the ranking. Maybe after Torino - Inter they switched... but since Massa has been confirmed I would have expected the same.

The second Category 1 referee after Guida is appointed in the KO stage of this competition: Ekberg in Monaco.
According to the Turkish press, Cüneyt Çakır was appointed to West Ham-Sevilla.
DeleteDi Bello has worked several times with Hategan already, so I think, this is the simple reason. Also in general di Bello seems to be the Italian VAR no 3 (behind Irrati and Valeri but above Guida and Mariani), it seems.

ReplyDeleteFor the past two league matches for Oliver, that is Manchester Derby as well as his last game Everton vs Wolves, Stuart Burt has been missing and Scor ledger (non FIFA) has acted as AR2 but Stuart Burt has also been appointed with different referees which means it’s not injury that has kept him out. Also Stuart Attwell is reall confirmed now as no longer a trusted VAR in UEFA, he has been out in the last 6 matches in UEFA that English VAR has been present, he kind of deserves it, his form both national and international as VAR has been horrendous not to mention the last bizarre mistake not recommending an OFR for Mike Dean in Liverpools match against Brighton.

Considering the extreme focus on referees… Both are clean in Italy. Turpin was kept away from Italian teams. Taylor indeed- kept away from all CL games. That must be something big. Siebert also in conference league. Expect him in a high profile game as well.

ReplyDeleteDisagree. Kovacs didn't whistle several very clear fouls for home team and made very hot atmosphere even warmer. On the other side, whistled some very soft fouls for Rangers. Also, only 1 minute of added time but it should be at least 4. Some injuries and many lost time because Rangers players took at least half a minute for every goal kick and out. Now, at the beginning of the second half in very dangerous position he whistled handball from Zvezda player, but it was handball from Rangers player just in front of the PK area.
DeleteDepends from what point of view you are watching. Those you mentioned in the first half were not clear fouls, but attempts by the home team to get free kicks.
DeleteFor me, he totally lost control in the 2nd half. The crowd is going crazy. In the 1st half fouls were very clear for home team. I have never seen that one team in both matches was so unlucky as Zvezda. In Glasgow missed penalty, post, several big chances and 3 canceled goals due to minimal offsides. Tonight so many chances, Rangers did nothing but somehow scored a goal.

How many matches is Orsato refereeing all at once? Not the best management of a 46-year-old with numerous physical problems. Especially Rocchi, who used him seven times from August to February and three times in the last 14 days (in which Orsato has also refereed in Europa League).

Delete@anonymous 21:13 maybe you misunderstood me, I have nothing against Orsato, on the contrary, I consider him the number 1 in Europe at the moment! It just seems to me worrying that the body of an athlete who will soon turn 47 years old and has already had many problems recently is subjected to so much effort. For half the season Orsato was hardly ever designated (at least in Italy), now it seems there are no other referees in the world.
DeleteMaybe it is not a leak; just that Polish FA released the info. CONMEBOL WCQ appointments are being released by member associations about a month before the matches and they were never considered leaks. It is the same qualifiers for all confederations, so if not a leak in CONMEBOL, should not be considered leak in UEFA as well. I guess MAs are free to release them, but some of them choose to do so, while others not.
DeleteThe problem is that the Polish FA actually didn't release the info. Someone from Polish FA informed Maciej Wąsowski from Weszło and the journalist posted the info on weszlo.com. To be honest, it should be the Polish FA releasing the news as first.
DeleteBy the way, the appointment is widely discussed now and most of media remind the non-given penalty on Zieliński during the ESPPOL game at EURO2020. Poland national men's team manager Jakub Kwiatkowski wrote on his Twitter that he talked with Orsato about the incident when they met at the GNK Dinamo - FC Sheriff Tiraspol game and Orsato said "you're right, we missed that'.

There are currently several upcoming WCQ appointments posted on the official FIFA website, so they are not confidential one week before the matches.
DeleteAll CONMEBOL WCQ appointments for the last two matchdays are now public. Why not the same in UEFA, since they qualifiers for the same FIFA competition?
DeleteThe problem is indeed created by the fact that UEFA wants appointments to be confidential until two days before the games. As this doesn't happen for other confederations, so you have such situation.

Stuart Attwell is one frustrating VAR!!!! Why can’t referee stick to their decisions anymore after OFR??? It is so so annoying, you where right the first time then decide to go bizzare the second time after OFR!!! Everton vs Newcastle I am referring too!! How far Stuart has fallen!! Meant to be on VAR duties on European night but still makes the same mistakes.

ReplyDeleteTbh I'm a bit torn about this. I can definitely see arguments for SFP but was it a clear and obvious error? Pawson gave a YC initially.
Is a paramount example of excessive force, and from a didactic standpoint, a clear red card.
DeleteBUT - it is the ‘tackle as an attack’ category, and therefore the intervention is wrong (and pretty surprising) in my opinion. Such decisions are match control ones to be taken by the referee himself, and to be respected by the VMOs in case of YC or RC.
The question also is, what Pawson could see in the OFR, but not live. It's not really about the point of contact here, but about the intensity and that the tackle comes from behind. Those two aspects should have been well visible on the field.
DeleteInteresting discussion, this time I wouldn't blame too much Attwell, but indeed his intervention seems to be rather wrong in this incident as well. I fully agree with Mikael, you can clearly read an excessive force in that tackle, but in my opinion it is up to referee to send off offender, not so much VAR stuff, because the tackle can't be 100% assessed by all people as red card. There is the need of more objective criteria like point of impact and so on. In Italy when we have such incidents (low tackles with hints of excessive force), unless very extra-ordinary cases, VAR support always the yellow card, if given. While in case of NO CARD, strong arguments for making an intervention.
DeleteI feel his decision he made or failed to make in the Liverpool vs Brighton when the goalkeeper clattered into a Liverpool player had impacted on his decision today. Attwell had faced this situation 100 times and would not have called an OFR.
DeleteI think the argument for red card is rather weak, personally. It doesn’t fall into that “tackle as an attack” category for me; there’s some added degree of force here but I don’t see it as a super forceful one that has to be red on the basis of the brute force of the kick alone, especially when the point and mode of contact are so benign. To me yellow is the correct decision here and I’m really surprised at the VAR intervention (but it’s england so maybe I shouldn’t be :P )
DeleteI am quite surprised about the further comments. In Germany this is a Red Card all day long and with no exceptions. And as this would be a clear and obvious error, the VAR intervention would be right as well.

The Everton- Newcastle game was edgy throughout. The ref was 10 feet away, clear in front of him.

If a fan is able to tied himself to goalpost while in play, then those 2 screaming ladies could easily do something stupid to referee.
Paulson couldn't wait to get into the locker room fast enough.
Really liked the way Michael Oliver dealt with the pressure being applied by the Betis players after that last minute goal to Frankfurt in extra time. He stayed calm, told them it was being checked and then confirmed the goal when VAR let him know it was all good.

ReplyDeleteAll I can say Letexier is a young star!!!! I don’t know how he rose to elite at such young age but he deserves it!!! Never fazed and has abilities that help give him acceptance on the pitch that he fails to get from his very young looks and stature.

DeleteIn every round, there are lots of speculations and opinions offered on the nominations of the referees for the EL and ECL games, with additional views on the talent and future of some of these referee; But after these EL and ECL games have been played, I can rarely find any comments or analyses of the actual performances!!! this is really surprising and frustrating. What is the reason? if broadcasts and recordings are difficult to find, how can there be so many strong opinions about these referees??
ReplyDeleteI think one of the main reasons that people on here are so passive regarding detailed analysis is the stupid leniency Rosetti bring into the UEFA refereeing. Now we have the CONCACAF-like style what is a real shame considering how things looked under Collina's leadership (they were not always perfect but still 100x better than now).
DeleteI think we had much more meritocratic approach back then, assessing each bigger call like yellow card in every game. Rewarding and punishing referees according to their performances. It made us glad to give our opinions when we knew we see things like/similarly to the referees committee.
Now we have a strange quasi-refereeing in which the referees are expected to bend and violate the laws of the game in order to please (big) players, (big) teams, (big) federations, sponsors and fans (whose only target is to watch clear cards not issued by referees, according to UEFA ;) - the game has to flow!).
In my opinion, Rosetti came out as a very poor head of referees, most likely susceptible to oustide pressure while his field of work should be only refereeing. I wonder if that's exactly the reason that made Collina leaving UEFA (non-refereeing people putting pressure on him to change the approach).
So, I watch every single game but find no pleasure in reporting how many cards were missed or would've been helpful but deliberately not given. I don't see any sense in assessing performances anymore. Also because the only thing that counts for Rosetti is:
- were there really big mistakes
- how media reacted to them.
No matter how many cards you are going to miss. As long as you deliver control and media won't mention you in a negative way, it's a good performance.
It's an anti-refereeing approach where referees are muppets without tools to save their image. What would be the idea behind writing reports if the only target for referees nowadays is to manage game by talking and avoid cards at all cost?
Collina prevented a generational turnover, leaving Rosetti with only rubble; he himself, in the last years of his mandate, was forced to give two CL semifinals to Cakir in one week and to designate Kuipers for the second time for the Europa League final (by giving all the important matches to Rizzoli, Cakir and Kuipers, no other referee had the chance to grow). I still remember glaring mistakes by Collina, for example the fact that Orsato was not selected for the World Cup in 2018 because Collina chose the 70-year-old Rizzoli, who obviously retired earlier.

WC2018 was neither Rizzoli, nor Orsato, but Rocchi.
DeleteIn spite of his love for Rizzoli, Collina did not assign him the Euro 2016 final, so he will not surpass him with both World Cup and Euro finals and they both ended their careers with a World Cup final and a Euro semi-final.
The Italian national team did not participate in the WC2018, and Italy could have sent two referees (since they had three top-tier elites) to give them experience; instead of selecting Rocchi and Orsato, however, Collina again chose the elderly Rizzoli, who then retired before the competition, leaving a hole. I cited this fact as an example of the limits of Collina's management: instead of developing all the referees, he always used only those few elements he trusted (Rizzoli and Cakir above all); when they retired, there was nothing left. Rosetti had to rebuild from scratch.

DeleteRemarkable comments… Some people out here seem to think that football is there for the referees and not the other way around. Nobody in football community is interested in a caution more or a caution less. They do care about the game to be fluent, the obvious fouls to be called and sanctioned and they don’t want referees to micromanage with the Laws book in the hand issuing loads of cards and stealing the show.

Come on, don't try to ridicule my comment. Nobody wants cards being showed like confetti. I just would like to see players being sanctioned accordingly to their actions and referees not being told to keep both eyes closed to blatant dissenting behaviour, delaying the restart or tactical fouls.
